About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.

willam christensen, founder of ballet west

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 20 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 40 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 172,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year. The Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has nearly 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newly-renovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.

With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and the world alive and thriving into the future.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to the second program of Ballet West’s 2026/27 season, Rolling with the Stones, a presentation of five works rooted in both classical ballet and modern dance. Classical ballet has developed over some 500 years. It is said to have begun in the 15th-century Italian Renaissance courts as costume pageants performed by revelers at social events. In the 16th century, Catherine de’ Medici brought these pageants to France and formally commissioned them as entertainment. Ballet’s formal training began in the 17th century, when Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, founded the Académie Royale de Danse and set out to codify the steps and positions that remain the foundation of ballet vocabulary today. In the 18th century, ballets moved from palace ballrooms to public theaters, particularly the Paris Opera, where choreographers began creating stories that conveyed plot and more complex emotions through movement. Through the 19th century, ballet took root in Italy, Denmark, Germany, and Russia, embracing folklore and the supernatural. Marie Taglioni became the first woman to rise onto the tips of her toes, creating a more ethereal, weightless quality and expanding ballet’s technique and expression, while composers began writing serious, multi-layered scores. By the century’s end, the Imperial Russian Ballet led the dance world primarily through choreographer Marius Petipa and composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, refining the formal structure of corps dances, divertissements, and pas de deux with variations and coda that became the standard for classical ballet. The early 20th century ushered in contemporary ballet with shorter, plotless, abstract works designed to be appreciated like paintings or sculptures in a gallery. Russian émigré Serge Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes in Paris, introducing groundbreaking collaborations between modern artists such as Picasso, composers such as Debussy and Stravinsky, and emerging choreographers such as Fokine, Nijinska, and Balanchine. Classical ballet became a collaborative part of the expressionist movement. Meanwhile, at the turn of the 20th century, modern dance emerged as a direct rebellion against the rigid constraints, formal techniques, and fairytale tropes of classical ballet. Isadora Duncan took off her shoes and her corset, Ruth St. Denis presented evocative Far-Eastern movement styles, and Ted Shawn created dances focused on men. These revolutions set performance dance in a new direction, drawing on Native, South American, Middle Eastern, and Asian cultures rather than only European folk dance. Later, modern dance became codified as well, with pioneers like Martha Graham and Lester Horton developing more grounded, earthier techniques. Every work on this program is a descendant of that history. Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven was choreographed in 1993 for The Royal Swedish Ballet by the late Ulysses Dove, a renowned dancer with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. Ailey’s technique was rooted in the training of Lester Horton, combined with ballet, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean dance styles. Dove’s work is a unique ballet, but its approach, drive, and musicality are born out of Ailey’s tradition. It is an elegy and a celebration of lives lost, particularly during the ravages of the AIDS epidemic, with each repeated bell in Arvo Pärt’s heartbreaking score representing a different person in Dove’s life who had passed. 16

BALLET WEST ROLLING WITH THE STONES

From the Artistic Director The central section features three short duets more closely linked to the classical idiom. Choreographers Christopher Wheeldon and Ben Stevenson were both dancers with England’s Royal Ballet, albeit in different eras. Stevenson, who passed in March 2026 at the age of 90, was a renowned director and choreographer primarily of story ballets in the grand classical tradition, but he also created shorter works. His Three Preludes, first produced in 1968 for New York’s Harkness Youth Ballet, is a romantic courtship for two young dancers set to three of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s passionate, intimate piano preludes. In the early 1990s, Wheeldon joined New York City Ballet, a company built by George Balanchine, himself a product of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. There he grew as a choreographer, and his blend of the classical and Balanchine styles with his distinctive theatricality has made him one of the world’s leading choreographers. His rarely seen Je Ne T’Aime Pas, set to Kurt Weill’s song of the same name, depicts a difficult breakup. This Bitter Earth, choreographed on two New York City Ballet dancers, explores the emotion and pain in Max Richter’s haunting contemporary adaptation of Clyde Otis’s 1960 song for Dinah Washington. The final work is perhaps the clearest depiction of this lineage. Christopher Bruce, one of the world’s most renowned living choreographers, danced and created works for England’s Ballet Rambert, founded by former Ballets Russes dancer Marie Rambert, an influence that clearly shows in his style. He created Rooster for the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève in 1991. A modern dance grounded in classical ballet and Graham technique, it is on the surface a playful romp to eight of The Rolling Stones’ most popular early hits, but dig deeper and you see it address complex relationships and dynamics between men and women. This program takes us on a journey, and it is also deeply personal to me, as each work represents, associatively or literally, different aspects of my own life’s journey. As part of my 20th and final season as Artistic Director of Ballet West, I wanted to share some of it with you. I hope you enjoy. Thank you for your patronage,

Adam Sklute The Willam Christensen Artistic Director Chair Sponsored By Peggy Bergmann

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally soughtafter teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

26–27 SEASON

17

From the Executive Director One of the reasons Ballet West is a beloved institution renowned throughout the Intermountain Region and beyond is its commitment to presenting audiences with programs that inspire our audiences and challenge our artists. Adam’s Sklute’s final season as Artistic Director of Ballet West continues with yet another program that does just that. Three company premieres are featured along with one work returning to Ballet West’s repertoire after a 17-year hiatus. Ben Stevenson’s Three Preludes is one of the late choreographer’s most celebrated works. Set to music by Sergei Rachmaninoff, it is noted for its simplicity and purity while eschewing displays of technical prowess. Two pas de deux by Christopher Wheeldon, This Bitter Earth and Je ne t’aime pas add to Ballet West’s growing repertoire of works by one of today’s most celebrated choreographers. Ulysses Dove’s Dancing On the Front Porch of Heaven, described by Dove as “…an experience in movement, a story without words…” uses Arvo Pärt’s score to create a brilliant work for three couples. Closing the program is Christopher Bruce’s Rooster, set to eight songs by The Rolling Stones including such hits as “Paint it Black” and “Ruby Tuesday.” It is a clever, jazzy conclusion to a program that has something that will appeal to everyone’s tastes. Around the corner (wait for it!) is America’s 1st Nutcracker™ choreographed by our founder, Willam Christensen. The Nutcracker’s timelessness makes it an enduring holiday tradition, one that appeals to children and adults alike. With an expanded run of 25 performances due to demand, there are plenty of options for dates and times spanning its three-week run to fit your schedule. A friendly reminder: the best seats go early, so plan ahead! Although our season is barely underway, we can already feel the excitement from our audiences and our patrons. There is tremendous affection for Adam Sklute and what he has accomplished during his record 20-year tenure as our Artistic Director. Your support of our Company, and of Adam, is deeply appreciated; without it we could not present such amazing programs as Rolling with the Stones and many others. Thank you for making Ballet West a national treasure! Warm regards, Michael Scolamiero The Elizabeth Solomon Executive Director Chair Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.

In Memoriam GIDEON JOZUA MALHERBE Please join Ballet West in celebrating the life of Gideon Jozua Malherbe. A patron of the arts, Gideon especially enjoyed performances of Ballet West. He was fascinated with the storytelling of ballet and loved attending sessions of Director’s Pointe with Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute. Gideon was always enthusiastically present for opening night performances at Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. He also took delight in seeing the company on tour at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Joyce Theater. Gideon was supportive of Ballet West, from Guild events to galas. Gideon’s love for the arts and artists will live on in our hearts. Arvo Pärt is an Estonian composer widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary classical music. Born in Paide, Estonia, he studied composition in Tallinn before exploring a wide range of styles, from early modernist and serial techniques to a deeply personal musical language he developed in the late 1970s known as tintinnabuli. Pärt’s music has earned international acclaim for its meditative clarity and spiritual depth, and he has been among the most performed living composers in the world.

KURT WEILL

Composer, Je Ne T’Aime (pas de deux) Kurt Weill (1900-1950) began his career in the early 1920’s, after a musical childhood and several years of study in Berlin. But he had already decided to devote himself to the musical theater, and his works with Bertolt Brecht soon made him famous all over Europe. He fled the new Nazi leadership in March 1933 and continued his indefatigable efforts, first in Paris (1933-35), then in the U.S. until his death. His most important works: the Violin Concerto (1925), The Threepenny Opera (Bertolt Brecht and Elisabeth Hauptmann, 1928), Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (Brecht and Hauptmann, 1930), The Pledge (Caspar Neher, 1932), The Seven Deadly Sins (Brecht, 1933), Lady in the Dark (Moss Hart and Ira Gershwin, 1941), Street Scene (Elmer Rice and Langston Hughes, 1947), Lost in the Stars (Maxwell Anderson, 1949).

The 1901 premiere of his Piano Concerto No. 2 launched one of the most frequently programmed works in the concert repertoire, and it has since topped Classic FM’s Hall of Fame for five consecutive years. 28

Favorite food: Brazilian food, of course. His favorite is Brazilian Strogonoff. Favorite thing to do in Salt Lake: Loves fishing at the reservoirs and lakes. He usually leaves his fishing stuff in the car so he has it everywhere he goes. If he sees a place he’s never seen before and can stop and fish, he usually does it.

Get to Know

HADRIEL DINIZ Principal Artist

What’s in his dance bag: A lot of shirts because he likes to change throughout the day, along with mints, massage balls, and a sewing kit. Interesting collections: Hadriel has over 20 Brazilian kites he has made. Growing up in Brazil, they would have kite tournaments where the goal is to cut each other’s lines (this was done by applying glass on the kite lines, which he admits was a bit dangerous!). Favorite role danced or dream role: Prodigal Son has been his favorite so far. The one he would love to do is Basilio in Don Quixote and has been dreaming of that role since he was a kid. Proudest moment as a dancer: When he arrived in the U.S. for the first time at age 16. It was something he really wanted for his family so he could support his mom and brothers. Biggest challenge as a dancer: He’s not as flexible as he would like to be, so he continues to improve on that every day. First three things you do in the morning: First, he takes a shower, then does his hair routine, which takes him a bit of time with his special hair cream, then makes coffee.
