DIRECTOR’S NOTE
O
n this, my tenth production directing and/or choreographing The Will Rogers Follies, after having been dance assistant on the original workshop and Broadway production, and after traveling the country in the cast of the national tour, I am tremendously happy — but not at all surprised — to report that the show still entertains me thoroughly and moves me deeply. Yes, there’s plenty of eye candy and glamor, but our rehearsal process has reminded me that the show is much more than a mere homage to Ziegfeldian dazzle. It is a testament to just how much one American contributed to his fellow man. Though not a tall fellow, Will Rogers was a “big man” by virtue of his philanthropic deeds, and because of his unique ability to point out both the glories and the inanities of human beings with warmth and humor. In this time of political uncertainty in the USA and in the world at large, Will’s witticisms are as potently resonant as they were over 80 years ago. And the laughter is every bit as comforting now as it once had been. Will said, “Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.” I endeavor to heed his advice most of the time. But as you watch the show, I invite you to let just the right amount of Will Rogers’ wonderful yesterday take up some of today. You’ll leave the theatre just a little bit lighter, and perhaps a little bit wiser. —DJ Salisbury Director/Choreographer

NORMAN LARGE (Clem Rogers) has enjoyed an extremely varied career, from principal artist with the New York City Opera to ten Ovation Award nominations. From symphony engagements under Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa to playing more different guest-starring roles on Star Trek than anyone in all of the series combined. From voicing characters in numerous Disney animated features to being recorded live at Carnegie Hall. From numerous original Broadway casts, including Les Misérables (Bishop, Javert, Thenardier) to scenes with Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. From dancing as a star of Cats to playing opposite Leslie

ALICIA LUNDGREN (New Ziegfeld Girl) is originally from Oakland, Calif. and began dancing at the Ann Davlin School of Dance. She also trained under the direction of Reginald Ray-Savage. After graduating from the Ailey School/ Fordham University B.F.A. program, she toured internationally with Ailey II. Lundgren was a member of Dallas Black Dance Theatre and then went on to perform with Philadanco. She is in her third season as a Radio City Rockette and made her Broadway debut in Shuffle Along. Most recently, she performed in Crazy For You at Lincoln Center under the direction of Susan Stroman. DAVID M. LUTKEN (Will Rogers) Broadway: Inherit the Wind; Ring of Fire; The Civil War; The Will Rogers Follies. NY City Opera: Paul Bunyan. DONNY OSMOND (Voice of Florenz Ziegfeld) is a Utah-born entertainer whose career began in the 1960s when he was five years old. Osmond is known for The Osmonds, solo hits like “Go Away Little Girl” and “Puppy Love,” the “Donny & Marie” show, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, Disney’s Mulan and much more. Osmond is currently performing with his sister, Marie, in the Las Vegas rendition of “Donny & Marie.” LINDSEY D. SMITH (New Ziegfeld Girl) A native of Murray and a graduate of the University of Utah with a B.F.A. in Modern Dance, Smith is thrilled to be back in Utah and returning to the PTC stage. She spent five seasons
as a Rockette, touring the country and dancing at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. Favorite credits include: Beauty and the Beast and Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular (Walt Disney World); 42nd Street (PTC); Thoroughly Modern Millie, Crazy For You and Singin’ in the Rain (HCT). As a choreographer, she staged her first TV special this past March on PBS. Smith currently lives in Orlando where she performs, is a teaching artist for the Disney Performing Arts Dance Program, and is a choreographer for Walt Disney World and special events. CASSIDY STONER (New Ziegfeld Girl) is thrilled to be making her Pioneer Theatre Company debut with The Will Rogers Follies! SYDNEY DUNCAN (New Ziegfeld Girl) is a Dallas, Texas native where she trained at Texas Ballet Theatre School and BTWHSPVA for saxophone, voice and dance. She then attended University of Utah’s Ballet Program and performed with Utah Ballet, and she received degrees in ballet and physics. Duncan has attended summer intensives at ABT, Ballet West, LINES Ballet, Ailey and Hubbard Street. She is happy to be back in Utah performing again. EMILY NACRISSA GRIFFITH (2nd Assistant Stage Manager) graduated from UVU with a bachelor of science in theatre arts with emphases in performance and design/technology. Griffith earned the Kennedy Center’s Meritorious Achievement Award for Excellence in the Stage Management Fellowship for her work as the production stage manager of UVU’s Next to Normal, which received the national award for Outstanding Production of a Play. PETER STONE (Playwright), 1930-2003, was the first writer to win the Tony, the Oscar and the Emmy. With 15 Broadway productions to his credit, he received Tony Awards for his books for 1776, Woman of the Year, Death Takes a Holiday, The Will Rogers Follies and Titanic (all four also winning the Tony for Best Musical). In 1999, he adapted the book for the Tony winning revival of Annie Get Your Gun. The author of more than two dozen feature films, he won an Academy Award for his screenplay for
Father Goose, and the Edgar for his film Charade. Among his other films are The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Mirage, Arabesque, Sweet Charity, Skin Game, Who’s Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? and Just Cause. From 1981-1999, Stone was President of The Dramatists Guild, the national society of playwrights, composers and lyricists. CY COLEMAN (Composer), 1929-2004, Coleman’s winning streak as a Broadway composer began when the team of Coleman and Carolyn Leigh collaborated on the musical Wildcat (1960), which marked the Broadway debut of comedienne Lucille Ball. In 1964, Coleman began collaborating with Dorothy Fields. Their first project was the Broadway smash Sweet Charity. He composed the score for I Love My Wife (1977), and then On the Twentieth Century (1978) with Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 1980, Coleman served as producer and composer for the circus-themed Barnum. Later in the decade, he collaborated on Welcome to the Club (1988) and City of Angels (1989). The 1990s brought two more new hit Cy Coleman musicals: The Will Rogers Follies (1991), again with Comden and Green, and The Life (1997). In addition, he composed scores for memorable television specials for Shirley MacLaine, Bob Hope, and Peggy Lee. Cy Coleman has received numerous awards, including Grammys, Tonys, Emmys and an Oscar nomination. ADOLPH GREEN and BETTY COMDEN (Lyricists), 1915-2002 and 1917-2006, respectively, were an American musical-comedy team who wrote scripts—and often the lyrics—for many Broadway shows and Hollywood film musicals. They were paired together longer than any other writing team in the history of Broadway. Comden studied dramatics at NYU. Green found his first job as a Wall Street runner. Comden and Green met in 1938 while both were making the rounds of theatrical agents. The Village Vanguard, a bohemian nightclub in Greenwich Village, was seeking a new show; and the group that became known as The Revuers stepped in—Comden, Green, Judy Tuvim, Alvin Hammer and John Frank. In 1944, Comden and Green joined with composer Leonard Bernstein and choreographer Jerome Robbins in creating the musical On the Town, which later was filmed by MGM. In 1951, with Two on the Aisle, Comden and Green began their long collaboration with composer Jule Styne, who

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY created the music for most of their shows, including Peter Pan (1954), Bells Are Ringing (1956), Say, Darling (1958), Do Re Mi (1960), Subways Are for Sleeping (1961), Fade Out–Fade In (1964), Hallelujah, Baby! (1967) and Lorelei (1974). Comden and Green wrote another musical with Bernstein, Wonderful Town (1953), which won them their first Tony Award; they won six others, for Hallelujah, Baby!, Applause (1970), On the Twentieth Century (1978) and The Will Rogers Follies (1991). They also wrote several film scripts, including that of Auntie Mame (1958) and Singin’ in the Rain (1952), the latter of which was voted the best film musical of all time by the American Film Institute. Among their best-known songs are “Just in Time” and “The Party’s Over.” In 1980 Comden and Green were named to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. BOB CLINE (Casting) is the founder of Bob Cline Casting in New York, and Broadway World recently named him one of New York’s ten best. He has cast film, TV, commercials, over 70 national tours and numerous regional theaters across the
country. Independently, or in his association with Rich Cole since 1994, he has cast for Pioneer Theatre Company, the Fulton Theatre, Maltz-Jupiter Theatre, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and many, many others. Bob has also been a proud faculty member in Pace University’s Theatre program in charge of the senior B.F.A. musical theatre majors for the last 10 years. Nights when he is not directing shows, he can be found directing students in one of the two audition classes he has taught weekly for the last 18 years through The Actor’s Loft. Bottled water is allowed. Smoking is not permitted in University buildings. Please ask ushers for smoking locations. Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons. Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by returning tickets to the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable. You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office 48 hours prior to the performance date. The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. No children under age 5 admitted to performances.
