PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTE These notes have been adapted from those included in the original Playbill for the Lincoln Center Theater production in March 2017:

In December 2012, after a performance of my play Blood and Gifts at Lincoln Center Theater, I went out for drinks with a Norwegian diplomat who had seen the play at the invitation of my director Bartlett Sher.

In a booth at a restaurant across the street from the theatre, in response to my questions about his work, he spoke about his involvement in the Oslo Peace Accords. I knew about this first ever peace deal between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization—signed in the White House Rose Garden on September 13, 1993—which gave us the iconic image of President Bill Clinton presiding over a handshake between Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Chairman Yasser Arafat. But what I discovered that night over drinks is that there was a backstory to this momentous event. Digging further on my own, I learned the full story of how the Oslo Accords came to be—a story that is documented, almost completely unknown.

Oslo is the story of a hidden history that lies behind a public history. But to be clear, it is my version of this history. The events in the play all happened, but locations have been condensed and the chronology of events has been compressed. Some of the players in this history have been excised; some of those who remain have been assigned different roles than their actual counterparts. Though every character in this play is named for a real person the words they say are mine.

Twenty-four years later, the memory of that handshake in the Rose Garden between mortal enemies is still fixed in the world’s mind. But the meaning and legitimacy of the process that led to that handshake remain in flux. Debates still rage about whether the Oslo negotiations were a brilliant masterstroke or a dangerous mistake. Participants and historians still battle over who deserve credit–or blame–for the historic compromises that were made. But both a dramatist and a citizen, I remain gripped by the unimaginable political will it took for those on both sides to create the opportunity for that handshake, and by the courage it took to stand face to face with the enemy as they struggled to find a way forward—together.

b FEBRUARY 1993 OSLO, NORWAY | The second round of talks. They continue to discuss and draft a Declaration of Principles (D.O.P.), establishing an unprecedented roadmap for negotiations.

HADLEY HEGE (German Tourist/ Ensemble) is thrilled to be making her Pioneer Theatre Company debut! She has worked in regional theater productions including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Audition (winner of the evening), Prep and Sex and the Big Bad City. Her training has included studying with: The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, The New York Film Academy, The Atlantic Theatre Company, The SITI Company, The Peoples Improv Theatre, and Bouffon Clown. PATRICK KINTZ (Trond Gundersen/Ensemble) is excited to be performing for the first time at Pioneer Theatre Company. A graduate of BYU in theatre studies, he has also studied with the amazing faculty at UVU and Steppenwolf Classes West. Some recent credits include: Charlie Cowell in The Music Man, Benjamin in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

(Sundance Theatre), Thomas in Venus in Fur, and John Calhoun in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Salt Lake Acting Company).

JOHN TERRELL (Thor Bjornevog/ Ensemble) is delighted to be back at Pioneer Theatre Company. He was recently seen as Curio in Twelfth Night this last spring. Theatre credits include: Angels in America (Prior Walter), Sweet Bird of Youth (Tom Jr.), Fool for Love (Eddie), Noises Off (Freddie). Screen credits include Unleashed, Lane 1974 and Medias Res which he helped produce. Terrell has a BA from California State University and has studied with the American Conservatory Theatre. He would like to thank Karen and the entire PTC team for this wonderful opportunity.

J.T. ROGERS’ (Playwright) plays include Oslo (Lincoln Center Theater, then Broadway; National Theatre, London, then West End); Blood and Gifts (Lincoln Center Theater; National Theatre); The Overwhelming (National Theatre, UK tour; Roundabout Theatre Company); and Madagascar and Seeing the Elephant, both given their World Premiere at the Salt Lake Acting Company. For Oslo, he won the Tony, New York Critics, Outer Critics, Drama Desk, Drama League, Lucille Lortel and Obie awards, and was nominated for the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards. Rogers’ essays have been published in the The New York Times, The Guardian and The New Statesman. He is a Guggenheim fellow and a founding board member of the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund. He holds an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

KAREN AZENBERG (Director) This marks Karen Azenberg’s seventh season as Artistic Director at PTC. Favorite projects include the world premieres of Alabama Story and “i;” the regional premieres of Sting’s The Last Ship and Les Misèrables; and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time, Newsies, Sweet Charity and The Rocky Horror Show. Originally from New York, her work there includes Lyrics and Lyricists (92nd St. Y), Blocks (a collaboration with Jonathan Larson), Prom Queens Unchained and choreography for Richard Greenberg’s The Dazzle (Roundabout Theatre Company). Among her other credits are National 20

PATRICK BLEY (Sound Designer) is a native of Chicago and a recent transplant to Salt Lake City. MARY P. COSTELLO (Production Stage Manager) has worked on over 40 productions during eight seasons with PTC. Favorites include Sting’s The Last Ship, Newsies, The Will Rogers Follies, Les Misèrables, In the Heights, Next to Normal and Rent. AMANDA FRENCH (Hair and Makeup Designer) has been a makeup and hair designer for over 28 years. She has worked for Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Utah Opera, Egyptian Theatre Company and the University of Texas at Austin. She is a contributing writer in the tenth edition of Stage Makeup by Corson, Glavan and Norcross, and her work can also be seen in The Costume Technician’s Handbook by Ingham and Covey, and Wig Making and Styling: A Complete Guide for Theatre and Film by Ruskai and Lowery, first edition. She attended the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati where she studied with Hair and Makeup Designer Lenna Kaleva. She is a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and a current University of Utah adjunct professor of wigs and makeup.

Pat Bagley, 62, is the longest continuously employed full-time political cartoonist in America. He started at The Salt Lake Tribune in 1979 after graduating from BYU, where he studied political science and history. In his four decades drawing, Bagley has created more than 10,000 cartoons and has won several prestigious awards, including the 2009 Herblock Prize, the 2017 Grambs Aronson Cartooning With A Conscience Award, and he was a finalist for the Pulitzer in 2013.
