Director’s Note

Opening a new theatre space is not for the faint of heart. It is a long process—in our case, it took five years. It’s a process that has been full of successes and disappointments; setbacks and accomplishments. It fostered collaborations and partnership; patience (lots of patience!!); and perseverance. It is an epic journey. Sort of like The Lehman Trilogy…

When faced with what play would open this glorious new theatre, I knew it had to be something intimate, but also new, different, and special. Sort of like what goes into the thought behind creating a new theatre. For me, and for Pioneer Theatre Company, an additional theatre space had to be intimate, but new, different, and definitely special.

What better play than The Lehman Trilogy – the journey of the Lehman family, founders of the global banking empire, from the arrival of Henry, Emanuel, and Meyer Lehman in America in the 1840’s to the 2008 collapse of the financial behemoth. I saw the Tony Award-winning New York production in 2021 and knew instantly that I wanted to share it with this community. It is an epic story; it is an epic undertaking: three actors portraying dozens of characters over the play’s 166-year time frame. But to tell this story while being in an intimate space is essential. Bringing the audience into the world of the play is vital.

So, here we are in the Meldrum Theatre, an intimate new space, for its inaugural production. It has been an epic journey of its own, and I’d like to take a moment to thank the countless individuals and organizations that brought us to this point. And thank you for being here to celebrate the opening of this space with this fabulous new work.

Dramaturg Note

On Monday, September 15, 2008, financial giant Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. filed for bankruptcy, sending shockwaves through the global market. Although Stefano Massini wrote The Lehman Trilogy in the aftermath of Lehman Brothers’ collapse in the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, his play is a story of beginnings and of family. Massini and adaptor Ben Power’s tale begins and ends with the three founding Lehman brothers themselves: Henry (né Heyum), Emanuel (né Mendel) and Mayer, who journeyed to America from their family home in Rimpar, Bavaria.

Written as a narrative poem in blank verse, Massini’s epic transports us back to 1844 as the eldest brother, Henry, arrives at the port of New York after a month and a half at sea, the life of the city whirling around him. The Lehman Trilogy itself is at once the magical music box, as Henry first describes New York City, and a living ledger, an accounting of the fates and fortunes of the Lehmans over generations and eras. And through them, of America’s. In The Lehman Trilogy, 164 years of the family’s own history and that of our country’s financial system are intertwined; trust in God and trust in the market yoked. The vast timestream of The Lehman Trilogy reveals patterns of risk, return and cost writ large.

In adapting the play from the original Italian, playwright Ben Power translated Massini’s single narrative voice into those of the three brothers. The longform poem is a triptych of time, tracing the transformation of Lehman Brothers from Henry’s first small storefront in Alabama to the company’s growing dominion on Wall Street and the international market. In The Lehman Trilogy, Massini interweaves rituals of the Lehman’s faith, sacred texts and defining events – both personal and historic: the brother’s celebration of Hanukkah together, the ark and the flood, the Civil War, the creation of the Stock Exchange, Black Thursday, the tower of Babel, Shiva and Sheloshim – rendering the story of the Lehman Brothers a two-sided coin of history and parable.

You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date.

The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
