I was born and raised in Pittsburgh (not Cleveland—a constant rust-belt rival). Now, Pittsburgh is a football town. When I first read this play, it was in late July right before the start of Steelers Training Camp. That meant my husband, my brother, and my nephews were spending hours on the phone discussing whether signing Aaron Rodgers was the best or worst thing to happen to the city. I have always been surprised by the ferocity and length of these sports conversations. But reading the play with these conversations in the background made a line in the play stand out:
“For me it’s never been about LeBron. It’s about going. Sitting there together. The ritual of it, you know?”
I know that in my family and circle of friends, the ritual—sitting there together—is a way to connect. And I also know that sometimes those long conversations take many turns. The sports conversations become a springboard for conversations about character, or race, or philosophy. These conversations are as central to the ritual as the game itself. That’s what I think Rajiv Joseph does so beautifully in this play. He allows us to witness the unlikely friendship of these two young men and how they use sports to talk about loss, secrets, dreams, race and class. In today’s fractured world, Rajiv’s play provides a moment of possibility—reminding us that despite our differences, our human connections—our friendships—are worth the work. The ritual of being in the room and sitting there together? Worth it.
Rajiv also reminds us that sometimes, simply playing together can be healing.
I’ll leave you with a quote from a famous NBA fan, President Obama, who recently said,
“Watching the NBA All-Star Game and Team USA at the Winter Olympics, it’s clear that sports – like music and art – still has the power to bring us together, build community, and remind us of our common humanity.”
Let the game begin!
Miriam Laube, Director

One of the most frequently asked questions of an Artistic Director is, “How do you pick your season?” Obviously, thoughtfully and carefully—but I don’t think that’s what people are really asking. Season selection is a yearlong (and sometimes longer) process that takes into account a show’s availability, whether we’ve produced it before (and if so, when), and whether the titles selected offer a balanced mi x of genres so each production at P TC provides a distinct theatrical experience for our audiences. I also like to rely a bit on intuition, hoping that something less well known might strike a chord in this community.
As we enter our seventh decade, the 2026–2027 season—PTC’s landmark 65th season and my 15th with the company—reflects our legacy of producing stories that entertain, challenge, and connect us, while embracing where theatre—and our world—are right now.
Drumroll, please!
We open with the Utah Professional Premiere of John Proctor Is the Villain, a recent Broadway hit that is fierce, funny, strikingly contemporary, and a bold, timely way to begin this milestone year. Next comes the cult-favorite musical Little Shop of Horrors. With its irresistible score and deliciously dark humor, this tale of a certain carnivorous plant remains one of musical theatre’s most enduring crowd-pleasers—and the perfect theatrical treat for the Halloween season.
Our holiday production, The Man Who Came to Dinner, brings classic American comedy to the forefront. Packed with rapid-fire wit and larger-than-life characters, it’s a joyful reminder of the timeless pleasure of laughter shared in the theatre. In the new year, we present the Utah Professional Premiere of Mean Girls. Based on the film by Tina Fey, this Broadway smash explores the complexities of high school hierarchy with humor and heart.
We continue with the Utah Premiere of Eureka Day, a play I loved when I saw it last year in New York and knew I had to bring it to PTC. This Tony Award–winning satire, set in a progressive school community facing a public health crisis, captures the cultural conversations shaping our present moment.
Finally, we will close our anniversary season with a major musical production to be announced on September 1. It’s a fitting capstone to our 65th year.
Thank you for being part of Pioneer Theatre Company’s story. I look forward to sharing this exciting season with you.

Dear Friends and Fellow Theatre Lovers:
King James captures something essential about how shared passions—whether for a basketball player or a singular moment in time—shape our relationships and our sense of belonging. At its heart, this play is not only about sports; it is about the ways we find one another through what we love. What begins as a transaction between two strangers becomes something much richer: a testament to how shared experience can transform isolation into connection.
Theatre has that same power. When we gather to experience a story together, those shared moments build relationships over time. Much like the friendship at the center of King James, trust and familiarity grow through experiences shared across years. A theatre community forms in the same way: people returning again and again, deepening their connection not only to the art, but to one another.
That spirit of shared investment is what sustains PTC. Thanks to the generosity of our donor community, we have now reached 76% of the progress needed to unlock the first year’s match of our $1.2 million Challenge Grant. The momentum is inspiring, but the final stretch is critical. As any marathon runner knows, the first 25.2 miles are about preparation and endurance. The final mile is about heart. Crossing the finish line requires grit, determination, and the support of those cheering you on. We need your help to carry us across that finish line. Your support will ensure we can continue producing work of this caliber while investing in artists, students, and audiences across our region.
As we gather for this production, I hope you see pieces of your own story reflected on stage—the friendships forged through seasons of triumph and heartbreak, and the people who stand beside us through it all.
That is the power of live theatre. It invites us to witness, to remember, and to belong. Thank you for being here.

Emergency Exits are indicated to your right and left in the theatre. Please identify the exit closest to your seat location in case an emergency occurs.
Videotaping, photographing, or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. This includes photos taken by phone.
WATCHES, CELL
AND CAMERAS ARE DISRUPTIVE; even when set on silent or vibrate, they may disrupt wireless sound equipment. Please leave your electronics in the car, or turn them off entirely while in the theatre.

TEXTING is disturbing to the actors and your fellow audience members. Do not text during the performance.
If you might need to be reached during a performance, leave your exact seat location with the box office. The number for emergency calls is 801-581-6963.
We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hard-of-hearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Collateral required; inquire at coat check.
We welcome all persons. Those with special requirements should request assistance in advance.
Refreshments are not permitted in the auditorium, but are available in the main floor lobby pre-show, and during intermission. Bottled water and approved PTC drink
containers are allowed in the theatre.
University of Utah is a non-smoking campus, both inside and outside all buildings.
Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2 :00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons.
Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by notifying the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable.
You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date.
The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
No children under age 5 are admitted to performances.
