DIRECTOR’S NOTE

I

’ve always had a love for what I call the “gigantic-intimate-play.” Having spent most of my studies and subsequent career getting “intimate” with the classics, this may make sense.

These are big plays, yes. And, yes, they can be wordy, too. But my goodness are they thrilling.

The classic repertoire owes much of its genius to those who have come before (thanks, Shakespeare) and that, I hope, is a never-ending cycle.

So, imagine my delight when extraordinary playwright Mike Bartlett comes along with a searing new play, written almost entirely in iambic pentameter (thanks again, Shakespeare) which is billed as a “future history play” about the living Royal Family.

Make no mistake: King Charles III is a modern masterpiece.

In its vastness, Bartlett asks unimaginable what-ifs as he inks the future of England’s monarchy after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. He dares to contemplate what a shift in power might look like when Elizabeth passes on. We know (think we know?) these people. My mother, born and raised in England, still wells with tears when she sees the Queen on television; others, including myself, have literally grown up with a lens trained on Diana, Prince William, Prince Harry and Camilla. And while this is one of those “gigantic” plays, the intimacy at its center reveals a familiar, jolting family drama. It unfolds with such shocking relevancy it’s astounding.

Here, during the first hours of Charles’ reign, the play demands decisions be made about the freedom of the press, the power of government, the value of tradition, the transfer of power… wait… I said this was set in England, didn’t I? There’s more: soaring poetry, plenty of laughs, a ghost and a push against the status quo as Bartlett’s narrative hurls this political thriller toward a powerful, compelling and tumultuous conclusion.

Never have I worked on a play that grows more and more relevant to our current political climate as every hour of each day goes by. Thanks to these fine artists and to Karen Azenberg and PTC for having the guts to nourish Utah with this kind of work. So happy to be back.

SARAH SHIPPOBOTHAM (Free Newspaperwoman/ Ensemble/U.S. Camilla) is a full professor at the University of Utah. She was last seen at PTC as Anne Putnam and Sarah Good in The Crucible. Earlier this season, she dialect coached The Last Ship and Oliver!. She also works as the resident voice and dialect coach for the Shaw Festival in Canada. She was the additional dialect coach on The Hobbit films.

BAILEY WALKER (Ensemble/U.S. Catherine) is a senior in the Musical Theatre Program at the U. Some of her recent roles include: Peggy/ Suzette in Dogfight, Daytona in Self Defense or Death of Some Salesmen, Cheerleader #2 in Saturday’s Voyeur 2016 (SLAC) and Clover in Animal Farm. WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY BENJAMIN YOUNG (Ensemble/U.S. Harry) is a sophomore in the Actor Training Program at the University of Utah. Previous credits include Algernon in Climbing With Tigers with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory and a reading in Plan-B Theatre Company’s Script-in-Hand Series.

DAVID IVERS (Director) returns to PTC after directing One Man, Two Guvnors. He is one of two artistic directors of the Utah Shakespeare Festival where he has acted and directed in nearly 50 productions spanning 20 seasons. He has appeared on stage and as a director at some of our country’s most prestigious theatres, most recently directing productions for Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Guthrie Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, South Coast Repertory Theatre, and multiple seasons on stage with the DCPA Theatre Company, Portland Rep. (Associate Artistic Director) Portland Center Stage, Alabama Shakespeare Festival and others.

He holds a B.F.A. from Southern Oregon University and M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota. He is a proud member of SDC and AEA. Many thanks to PTC. GARY M. ENGLISH (Scenic Designer) is the founding artistic director of Connecticut Repertory Theatre and served as artistic director and dept. head in dramatic arts for 15 years. Recent major directing credits include The Miracle Worker and American Primitive, produced at the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, Mass. As a designer, his work includes scenery and costumes for off-Broadway, television and over 70 productions at many of America’s leading repertory theatres. Some design credits include The Fantasticks at the Repertory

Theatre of St. Louis; One Man, Two Guvnors, The Light in the Piazza and the world premiere of The Ladies Man, by Charles Morey, at Pioneer Theatre Company. He is currently on the Board of Directors serving as immediate past president for U/RTA. He served as commissioner of scene design for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, USITT and as a panelist on the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. He is currently a member of the National Theatre Conference.

GREGG COFFIN (Composer) Previously at Pioneer Theatre Company, Coffin music directed One Man, Two Guvnors. Elsewhere he has composed, directed, arranged or orchestrated the music for productions in theatres throughout the U.S. and Canada, including the Minetta Lane Theatre and The Duke on 42nd Street (off-Broadway), the Stratford Festival of Canada, the National Arts Centre, and Canadian Stage (Canada), Alley Theatre, American Players Theatre, Arena Stage, Berkeley Rep., Geva Theatre Center, The Guthrie Theatre, South Coast Rep., DCPA, and the Oregon, Utah, Santa Cruz, Alabama, California, Great River and St. Louis Shakespeare Festivals. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and the American Federation of Musicians, Local 12.

ADRIANNE MOORE (Dialect Coach) is the head of the theatre department at Utah State University and a freelance accent coach and director. Her work as a dialect and vocal coach for Pioneer Theatre Company includes productions of Dracula, My Fair Lady, The Heiress and Pride and Prejudice.

She has also served as dialect and text coach for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, working on productions of Two Gentlemen

of Verona, Sherlock Holmes, Boeing Boeing and Dracula. She coaches regularly for the Salt Lake Acting Company; credits there include Streetlight Woodpecker, Tribes, Good People, Venus in Fur, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Red, Angels in America, Charm, The Caretaker, Skin in Flames, I Am My Own Wife, Polish Joke and Memory of Water. She is the resident dialect coach for the Lyric Repertory Company and has recently taken on the role of artistic producer for the company. Film dialect coaching includes The Redemption of Sarah Cain and the AMC pilot Galyntine.

Moore is a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association.

JOSHUA C. HIGHT (Sound Designer) A graduate with distinction of London’s Alchemea College of Audio Engineering, Hight comes to PTC with many years of experience in professional audio systems repair and design and has established himself as an exceptional live sound engineer in both London and Salt Lake City.

Hight is looking forward to a successful fourth season working in theater design with Pioneer Theatre Company. His other projects of note include working with Sommerset House for the 2012 Olympic Games, and PTC’s Much Ado About Nothing, Deathtrap, Sweet Charity, The Rocky Horror Show, One Man, Two Guvnors, Alabama Story, The Crucible, I Hate Hamlet, The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, Outside Mullingar, It Happened One Christmas, Two Dollar Bill, An Inspector Calls, Cowgirls, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Last Ship, The Glass Menagerie, Oliver!, Fences, Women in Jeopardy! and Chess.

AMANDA FRENCH (Hair and Makeup) has been a makeup and hair designer for over 25 years. She has worked for

She is a contributing writer in the tenth edition of Stage Makeup by Corson, Glavan and Norcross, and her work can also be seen in The Costume Technician’s Handbook by Ingham and Covey, and Wig Making and Styling: A Complete Guide for Theatre and Film by Ruskai and Lowery.

She attended the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati where she studied with Hair and Makeup Designer Lenna Kaleva. She is a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and a current University of Utah adjunct professor of wigs and makeup.

ISABEL SMITH-BERNSTEIN (Dramaturg) This is her first show with Pioneer Theatre Company. She has worked previously as a dramaturg with the Utah Shakespeare Festival (Much Ado About Nothing, The Three Musketeers, Amadeus, Charley’s Aunt), Lean & Hungry Theater (The Scarlet Letter, The Comedy of Errors, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), Empty Chair Theatre Company (Titus Andronicus, Hamlet), Underling Productions (Measure for Measure), and as an assistant dramaturg with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Pericles) and the Folger Theatre (Richard III). Publications include an article in the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s The Quill. She holds a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University and is an M.A. candidate at UC Boulder.

TANYA J. SEARLE (Production Stage Manager) has returned for her second season at Pioneer Theatre Company. Searle has worked at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Orlando Shakespeare Festival, Houston

Grand Opera and the Atlanta Ballet. She holds an M.F.A. in stage management from the University of Alabama/ASF and an M.A. in food studies from Chatham University in Pittsburgh. Searle is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

MARY P. COSTELLO (Stage Manager) is with Pioneer Theatre Company for her sixth season! MIKE BARTLETT (Playwright) is currently associate playwright at Paines Plough. In 2011 he was writer-in-residence at The National Theatre, and in 2007 he was Pearson Playwright in Residence at the Royal Court Theatre. His play Love, Love, Love won Best New Play in the 2011 Theatre Awards UK, and his play Cock won an Olivier Award in 2010 for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre; he won the Writer’s Guild Tinniswood and Imison prizes for “Not Talking” and the Old Vic New Voices Awards for Artefacts. Theatre credits include: Love, Love, Love, 13 (National Theatre), Decade (co-writer), Earthquakes in London, Cock, Contractions, Artefacts and My Child.

BOB CLINE (Casting) is the founder of Bob Cline Casting in New York, and Broadway World recently named him one of New York’s ten best. He has cast film, TV, commercials, over 70 national tours and numerous regional theaters across the country. Independently, or in his association with Rich Cole since 1994, he has cast for Pioneer Theatre Company, the Fulton Theatre, Maltz-Jupiter Theatre, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and many, many others. Bob has also been a proud faculty member in Pace University’s Theatre program in charge of the senior B.F.A. musical theatre majors for the last 10 years. Nights when he is not directing shows, he can be found directing students in one of the two audition classes he teaches weekly, for the last 18 years, through The Actor’s Loft.

Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by returning tickets to the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable.

You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office 48 hours prior to the performance date.
