DIRECTOR’S NOTE

W

hen I proposed adding our concerts to the PTC season, I wanted to be able to offer something a little different for our musical theatre fans.

I wanted to do bigger shows that were hidden gems and would probably never make it onto the mainstage for a full production. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels fits perfectly into that category. When I saw the original production on Broadway, I loved it and I listened to the cast recording. I actually listened to it a lot. The score is great fun—not really old-fashioned, but with lots of tunes you can hum.

I think the title might be familiar because of the 1988 movie with Steve Martin, but maybe you aren’t as familiar with the musical. The plot lends itself to this spontaneous theatrical form. The con men at the center of the story have to be good at improvising, as do all of the actors in our concert productions. They have had a mere ten days of rehearsal, so you never know what is going to happen.

BRENT BARRETT (Lawrence Jameson) starred as the Phantom in Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular and in the German production. In New York, Brent has starred in Chicago – The Musical, Annie Get Your Gun opposite Reba McEntire, Dance a Little Closer, Grand Hotel, Candide, Brigadoon, and West Side Story. He originated the role of Dr. Hannibal (the cannibal) Lecter in Silence! The Musical. Barrett played the role of Ben in Follies at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

ELIJAH EMMIT CURRY (Ensemble) Thrilled to be making his PTC debut!

A New York City-based actor and Western Michigan University Alumnus, Curry’s previous credits include Jersey Boys (Barry), Hairspray (Seaweed), and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Judah). Curry would like to thank his mother and The Mine Agency for their continued love and support!

CAMERON HOLZMAN (Ensemble) is a senior in the MTP. Most recently, he appeared as Sonny in Grease (PTC), a Cagelle in La Cage aux Folles – Concert Production (PTC), and Anatoly in Chess (U of U Theatre). Reno has conducted six original cast albums and has been nominated twice for a Grammy award for his work as a producer of Something Rotten! and The Drowsy Chaperone cast albums.

SETH PIKE (Ensemble) is super excited to be back at PTC! He was last seen in Sting’s The Last Ship. He wants to thank his family for their support through everything, and Karen and Lenny for the great opportunity!

KAREN AZENBERG (Director/ Choreographer) This marks Karen Azenberg’s eighth season as Artistic Director at PTC. Favorite projects include the world premieres of Alabama Story and “i”; the regional premieres of Sting’s The Last Ship, and Les Misérables; and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Newsies, Sweet Charity, and The Rocky Horror Show. Originally from New York, her work there includes Lyrics and Lyricists (92nd St. Y), Blocks (a collaboration with Jonathan Larson), Prom Queens Unchained, and choreography for Richard Greenberg’s The Dazzle (Roundabout Theatre Company). Among her other credits are National Tours of Carousel and Brigadoon, West Side Story (over 15 productions), and productions at Indiana Repertory, Geva Theatre Center, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Goodspeed, and Utah Shakespeare Festival. Karen is a past president of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC).

Her favorite productions are her son Alexander and her daughter Emelia.

BRENDA VAN DER WIEL (Costume Design) is part of the design faculty for the University of Utah Theatre Department and serves as head of the Performing Arts Design Program. She designs regularly for that department as well as for Pioneer Theatre Company and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Recent works in Utah include Chess, Hello Dolly!, the masks for Animal Farm, Blue Stockings, and the Avenue Q puppets for the Babcock Theatre. Some favorite designs for Pioneer Theatre Company include Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Mamma Mia!, Outside Mullingar, Alabama Story, Rent, Emma, and A Christmas Story.

Some favorite designs for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival include Annie, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Comedy of Errors, and The Count of Monte Cristo. Her work has also been seen at Utah Shakespeare Festival in Mary Poppins, Treasure Island, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

AUGIE K. MERICOLA (AEA Assistant Stage Manager) An Equity stage manager for more than 30 years, Mericola’s credits include Broadway, National Tour, and regional productions. On Broadway, Mericola stage-managed Jonathan Larson’s Rent, Neil Simon’s Proposals, and Molly Sweeny by Brian Friel.

National Tours: First National Tour of Rent, The Sisters Rosensweig, Lost in Yonkers, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Driving Miss Daisy, Grease, and Those Were the Days. He also spent nine years as an ASM and SM at Indiana Repertory Theatre, where he worked on too many shows to list. In addition to stage management, Mericola served as Assistant and Head Props on several Broadway shows, including Movin’ Out, The Odd Couple, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Wicked. ALLAN BRANSON (Sound Design) is thrilled to be a part of Pioneer Theatre Company. He previously worked at The Arkansas Repertory Theatre as their resident sound designer for six seasons, where he designed such shows as Because of Winn-Dixie (world premiere), The Bridges of Madison County (regional premiere), and Memphis (regional premiere). Branson is a proud member of The Theatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association.

YANCEY J. QUICK (Hair Design) is the Wig Master and Shoe Master for Ballet West in SLC, UT. His work has been seen on stage at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, when the company was invited to perform its production of The Nutcracker to sold-out houses. He has also designed wigs and makeup for several years at Utah Opera and Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre. He has had the privilege of working for companies such as the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival, Utah Symphony, and The Oregon Cabaret Theatre. As a member of IATSE Local 99 (the union of professional stagehands, motion picture technicians, and allied crafts) he also has the privilege to work backstage on numerous national Broadway tours. DAVID YAZBEK (Music and Lyrics) A varied career as a recording artist, Emmy-winning TV and film writer, music producer and pianist has somehow led 14

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST Yazbek to a career on Broadway. His four shows, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Women on The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and The Band’s Visit were all Tony-nominated for Best Score. Yazbek took home the Tony for Best Score for The Band’s Visit. The Full Monty won him the Drama Desk Award for Best Music. As a recording artist, Yazbek is responsible for five albums: The Laughing Man (winner NAIRD award, Best Pop Album of the Year), Tock, Damascus, Tape Recorder, and Evil Monkey Man. He also produced the original cast albums of The Band’s Visit, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, the first three of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. Yazbek scored the final season of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” scored and performed the music for Larry David’s giant Broadway hit Fish in the Dark, and built an Ikea storage shelf.

Yazbek teamed up with 13 librettist Robert Horn to collaborate on the new muscial Tootsie, currently running on Broadway and nominated for 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

“The Murder of Mary Phagan,” he is the winner of five Emmy Awards, three Writers Guild Awards, two Peabodys, a Golden Globe, and the Christopher Award, and the relatively good-natured loser of many more.

According to imdb.com, he also played Clarice’s father in the film The Silence of the Lambs. But he didn’t.

BOB CLINE (Casting) is the founder of Bob Cline Casting in New York. Broadway World recently named him one of New York’s “Ten Best.” He has cast film, TV, commercials, over 75 national tours and numerous regional theaters across the country and has been associated with the casting for Pioneer Theatre Company for over a decade. Cline has also been a proud faculty member in Pace University’s theatre program, in charge of the senior BFA musical theatre majors for the last 16 years. He is the Associate Director of Broadway Artists Alliance, enjoys working with The Open Jar Institute, and often teaches through The Growing Studio and The Actor’s Loft.

JEFFREY LANE (Book) was most recently represented on Broadway by his work with David Yazbek for the musical version of Pedro Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. His work for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels earned him both Tony and Drama Desk nominations, as well as the Drama League Award for Best Musical. Perhaps best known for such television programs as “Mad About You,” “Ryan’s Hope,” “Lou Grant,” “Cagney & Lacey,” “The AFI Life Achievement Awards,” “The Tony Awards,” “The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd,” and the miniseries

Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons.

Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by returning tickets to the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable.

You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date.

The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
