This was one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra is that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings for their conservation and development. In 1997, he founded the Orpheus Centre in Surrey, where young disabled people prepare for independent living through a series of performing arts courses. In 1998, he was awarded the OBE. He was knighted in June 2012 for charitable service through the Alchemy Foundation. He owns and drives a JCB and has five children and 13 grandchildren.
