WELCOME On paper, the four performances opening Onstage Ogden’s 77th season have almost nothing in common. One of them has no words in it at all. One of them is nothing but words. What they share is something simple: each one tells you a story in its own unique way. Cirque de la Symphonie tells it with acrobats in the air above a full Utah Symphony without saying a word. It’s a hard thing to describe and an easy thing to watch. Garrison Keillor does the opposite. One man, a microphone, and Richard Dworsky at the piano, and it turns out that’s plenty. The American Patchwork Quartet, with special guest Fabiola Méndez, takes American roots songs apart and rebuilds them out of four different traditions, co-presented with our friends at Browning Presents! And El David Aguilar sings and strums through his stories in a room small enough that you can watch his hands. Finding performances like these is more involved than you might think. If I’m absent from tonight’s concert, it’s likely because I’m attending the Western Arts Alliance conference in Oakland, which is where seasons like this one get started. It’s a few days of seeing artist showcases, meeting with their representatives, and sitting down with people running organizations like ours all over the West. Most of what you’ll see on stage during our 2027/2028 season, I’ll hear about there first. None of it happens without you. Last year your generosity brought over 21,000 people to 38 performances and reached thousands of students and adults outside the traditional concert hall experience. Our donors, local foundations, governmental partners, and sponsors make these stories possible. In just a few minutes, the lights will go down, and a new story will begin. Thanks for being here for it. James Fredrick Executive Director Onstage Ogden

ARTISTS’ PROFILE GARRISON KEILLOR storyteller
RICHARD DWORSKY piano
Garrison Keillor is a writer, humorist, and broadcaster who created and hosted A Prairie Home Companion, the live variety show that ran for 42 years, from 1974 to 2016. He launched it on a Saturday evening in Saint Paul after writing an article about the Grand Ole Opry for The New Yorker, and over roughly 1,500 broadcasts it grew from a local program into a Saturday institution carried on some 690 public radio stations and heard by about four million listeners a week. Some 10,000 performers passed across its stage.
Richard Dworsky is a keyboardist, composer, producer, and music director known for his improvisational range across styles. For 23 years he was the pianist and music director of A Prairie Home Companion, where he underscored every sketch and monologue and accompanied guests including James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, Mark Knopfler, and Yo-Yo Ma. He appeared on several of the show’s Grammy-nominated recordings, and made his film debut as pianist, bandleader, and music director of Robert Altman’s 2006 feature A Prairie Home Companion. He went on to serve as music director of the show’s successor, Live From Here, alongside Chris Thile.
At the center of it was the monologue: the news from Lake Wobegon, the fictional Minnesota town where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average. Keillor has written more than thirty books, among them the Lake Wobegon books and, most recently, Cheerfulness and Brisk Verse. He also hosts The Writer’s Almanac, the daily program of poetry and literary history, and continues to write a weekly column and produce Garrison Keillor’s Podcast. At 84, he tours with what he describes as a show about the beauty of growing old — monologues, limericks, poetry, the familiar Lake Wobegon characters, and, at the end of the night, the whole room singing together. “We are the last generation who knows all the words,” he says. “When we’re gone, they’ll disappear.”
Dworsky grew up in Saint Paul, began classical piano at six, and was studying at the University of Minnesota by eleven. His own recordings include All In Due Time and The Path to You, and his piano piece “A Morning With the Roses” became a New Age standard through Windham Hill’s compilations. He has scored documentaries for HBO and PBS, written for Children’s Theatre Company, had a song recorded by Kristin Chenoweth, and collaborated with artists from Al Jarreau to the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He is a Steinway Artist.

ARTISTS’ PROFILE AMERICAN PATCHWORK QUARTET American Patchwork Quartet, led by multi-Grammy-winning guitarist and vocalist Clay Ross, binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication, country twang, West African hypnotics, and the ornamentation of South Indian classical music. The premise is simple and quietly radical: the songs at the center of the American canon were never one culture’s property. By reclaiming the immigrant elements inside American roots music, the quartet asks audiences to acknowledge their differences and discover a shared identity — work the group carries into performances and community engagement alike, taking on prejudice around race and immigration directly. Their self-titled debut earned a nomination for Best Folk Album at the 67th Grammy Awards, and Mix Magazine called it “a breathtaking confluence of heritage roots, jazz, and world music influences.” The group made its Grand Ole Opry debut on June 18, 2024. CLAY ROSS — guitar, vocals. A multiGrammy-winning guitarist and vocalist, southern-born and a lifelong roots music enthusiast, Ross founded American Patchwork Quartet and also founded the Gullah ensemble Ranky Tanky. HARINI “RINI” RAGHAVAN — vocals, violin. Chennai-born and New Jersey–based, Rini is a singer, violinist, and composer who threads decades of Carnatic training through jazz and electronic pop. MOTO FUKUSHIMA — bass. An Grammy– nominated bassist, composer, and multi– instrumentalist blending Japanese tradition, jazz, classical music, and global rhythms. KOLEBY ROYSTON — drums. A Denver– born drummer who has performed with Sean Jones, Tia Fuller, Mimi Jones, and Matthew Stevens.
FABIOLA MÉNDEZ cuatro Fabiola Méndez is a Puerto Rican cuatrista, singer, educator, and Emmy-nominated composer whose work explores her culture, ancestry, and identities through folk, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean traditions. Born in Caguas, she began playing the cuatro — Puerto Rico’s national instrument — at six, trained at the Antonio Paoli School of Music, and in 2018 made history as the first graduate in Berklee College of Music’s history to study the cuatro as her principal instrument. She has performed at NPR’s Tiny Desk, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and has collaborated with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, Pedro Capó, and Bad Bunny. Her albums include Herencia Criolla (2009), Al Otro Lado del Charco (2019), Afrorriqueña (2021), and Flora Campesina (2024), and in 2022 she produced Negrura, a documentary on Afro-Latinx experiences of colorism and discrimination. Her honors include the Quincy Jones Award, the ASCAP Foundation’s Lucille and Jack Yellen Award, Latin Artist of the Year at the 2023 Boston Music Awards, and a 2023 Children’s and Family Emmy nomination. She is on the faculty of the Longy School of Music of Bard College and is a featured composer for Fred Rogers Productions. The Boston Musical Intelligencer has praised her “stylistic versatility, infectious charisma, and jaw-dropping virtuosity.” ABOUT BROWNING PRESENTS! Browning Presents! is a performance and lecture series of the Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities at Weber State University. Founded in 1978 and supported by the Browning Foundation, it brings performers and scholars to the region for public events and student engagement. 801-399-9214 / 17

El David Aguilar is one of the most versatile singer-songwriters to come out of Mexico’s independent scene. Born Rodolfo David Aguilar Dorantes in 1983 and based in Monterrey, he has been writing songs since his teens, and his music draws on Mexican folklore, Latin American and Brazilian traditions, and American rock, pop, and folk from the 1960s through the 1990s — sources that shouldn’t sit comfortably together and somehow do. The stage name came about plainly enough: in 2010, hunting for an available web domain and finding every version of his own name taken, he added the article.
Ten albums in, beginning with Frágil in 2004, he has become one of the most sought-after collaborators in Latin American songwriting. His poetic lyrics and harmonic instinct have made him a frequent writing partner of Natalia Lafourcade, Jorge Drexler, and Mon Laferte. He has received nine Latin Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and three nods for Song of the Year, and his most recent album, Compita del Destino (Universal, 2024) — a collection of songs reflecting on life, love, and fate — brought him his first Grammy nomination, for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album at the 67th Grammy Awards.

IN MEMORIAM
Marlene Barnett — the Symphony Lady
For more than forty years, if there was a Utah Symphony concert at Weber State, you could count on one thing: Marlene Barnett would be there as a devoted subscriber, a longtime board member, and a friend to this organization. Marlene believed in what the arts could do for a community and for a young person’s life, and she acted on that belief year after year, serving twelve years on our board of directors, eight on the Weber County Library Board, and building a lifetime of friendships in concert halls and beyond. In 2009, Ogden City recognized her with the Mayor’s Award in the Arts for Lifetime Contribution. We were lucky to have Marlene as part of our story for so long. The Symphony Lady will be missed at every concert. 20 / OnstageOgden.org
