WELCOME Welcome to the part of the year when the trees go bare and we start checking the mountains every morning for snow. It’s a good time to be in a theater. It’s also a month full of things that have lasted. A movie from 1993. A fiftyyear career. A set of cats that were prowling the Himalayas long before anyone had a camera. Hocus Pocus came out in the summer of 1993, did fine, and then turned into a Halloween ritual a whole generation grew up on. This fall the Utah Symphony plays the score live beneath it, which may be the most fun thing you’ll see an orchestra do all year. National Geographic’s Sandesh Kadur spent years in the Himalayas tracking cats most people will never see, the grumpy Pallas’s cat and the clouded leopard among them, and he’s brought his footage to Peery’s Egyptian Theater. And Aída Cuevas has fifty years of ranchera behind her and a distinction no one else holds: the only woman in mariachi to win both a GRAMMY® and a Latin GRAMMY®. Nothing lasts by itself. Hocus Pocus needed families to keep watching it. Mariachi needed singers like Aída to keep it alive. Wild cats need people who know they’re out there, which is why Kadur is also giving a student matinee for a theater full of kids from all over Northern Utah. And Onstage Ogden, which began in 1949 with a group of Ogden residents who decided the Utah Symphony belonged here too, has needed people who kept showing up, decade after decade. I want to thank the people who make that possible: our donors, the family foundations and government partners who fund the season. You are the reason a night like this happens in Ogden, and the reason it will next year too. The holidays are next: Ballet West’s Nutcracker over Thanksgiving weekend, then BYU Vocal Point and Noteworthy and the Utah Symphony’s Holiday Pops in December. For now, though, you’ve got a ticket, a seat, and something about to begin that has stood the test of time. Enjoy. James Fredrick Executive Director Onstage Ogden

ARTIST’S PROFILE The voice, charisma, and commanding stage presence of Aída Cuevas have shaped one of the most formidable careers in traditional Mexican and Latin American music. Over more than five decades, “The Queen of Ranchera Music” has built a legacy that transcends borders, generations, and styles, establishing herself as a living symbol of Mexico’s cultural identity. Her career has been honored with distinctions bestowed by presidents, royal houses, governments, and internationally renowned institutions. With 35 albums to her name, and the distinction of having received both the GRAMMY® and the Latin GRAMMY®, along with eleven additional

nominations, Aída Cuevas remains to this day the only woman in the mariachi genre to have earned both awards—an extraordinary achievement in a field historically dominated by men. Her story began at the age of 11, when her exceptional talent led her to stand out in amateur competitions. In 1975, at just 12 years old, she made her national debut on the iconic live radio program “El Taller XEW.” Only a year later, she was already performing on European stages, launching an international career rare for an artist so young. By her third studio album, the legendary composer Armando Manzanero produced Cari Cari and entrusted her with “Te vas para tu casa,” the first mariachi song he ever wrote. A defining turning point came in 1982, when Mexican music icon Juan Gabriel invited her to record an entire album of his original compositions. This project not only marked a before and after in her career, but ultimately consecrated her as “The Voice of Mexico.” Now widely recognized as “The Greatest Exponent of Mexican Music,” Aída Cuevas has brought mariachi to the world’s most prestigious stages, elevating it with elegance, strength, and authenticity. Her name no longer represents just a successful career, but a living legend— the last great queen of an irreplaceable lineage in the history of ranchera music. A woman of unbreakable spirit, faithful to the essence of ranchera music and deeply rooted in the land that gave her life. In her, the charro suit is not attire, but a banner; and every note that rises from her voice carries the depth of her soul and the truth of her story. Thus she stands— unmistakable and timeless—Aída Cuevas.

IN MEMORIAM

Marlene Barnett — the Symphony Lady

For more than forty years, if there was a Utah Symphony concert at Weber State, you could count on one thing: Marlene Barnett would be there as a devoted subscriber, a longtime board member, and a friend to this organization. Marlene believed in what the arts could do for a community and for a young person’s life, and she acted on that belief year after year, serving twelve years on our board of directors, eight on the Weber County Library Board, and building a lifetime of friendships in concert halls and beyond. In 2009, Ogden City recognized her with the Mayor’s Award in the Arts for Lifetime Contribution. We were lucky to have Marlene as part of our story for so long. The Symphony Lady will be missed at every concert. 16 / OnstageOgden.org

THE MARLENE BARNETT MUSIC EXCELLENCE ENDOWMENT FUND Established in her honor in 2024 by Onstage Ogden and Weber State University, the fund provides scholarships for aspiring musicians following in her footsteps, reaching students at Weber State University and in the Ogden and Weber School Districts. Your gift carries her vision forward. Scan the code to give, or mail a check noting “Marlene Barnett #522017” to Weber State University, University Advancement, Dept. 4018, Ogden, UT 84408-4018.
