About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.

willam christensen, founder of ballet west

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 20 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 40 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 172,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year. The Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has nearly 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newly-renovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Ballet West’s 2026/27 season and our revival of Ben Stevenson’s Dracula. We first premiered Stevenson’s version of this gothic tale in 2011 and it has become, after our founder Willam Christensen’s iconic The Nutcracker, our most popular and requested production. So, it seemed fitting to produce it for the opening of my 20th and final season as Artistic Director of Ballet West. Plus, it is a perfect ballet to celebrate Utah’s beloved Halloween season. With this production we also honor the loving memory of Ben Stevenson who passed away this past March of 2026 at the age of 90. Ben was arguably one of the world’s greatest story ballet choreographers. He remounted and recreated most of the great classics and conceived and choreographed many new and original story ballets including among many others The Snow Maiden, Alice in Wonderland, Peer Gynt, and Dracula. This production of Dracula premiered in 1997 to celebrate the centennial of the publication of Bram Stoker’s novel. But Stevenson chooses not to follow the novel specifically. Instead, he uses the text as a blueprint to create a more streamlined story that is evocative of the original Stoker tale but is structured more like many of the 19th century classics. Its operatic grand scale and opulence made it an instant hit, and it is now in the repertoires of companies around the world. At its premiere, The New York Times said “Ben Stevenson’s Dracula is spectacle of an order ballet audiences seldom see today. The sets, costumes and lighting are not just lavish but exquisitely beautiful and atmospheric. The ballet, danced to music by Liszt arranged and conducted by John Lanchbery, is crammed with ingenious stage magic, just as the Romantic-era ballets of the late 19th century were.” Stevenson places the action in Dracula’s castle in Transylvania and in the peasant village below. The three mortal leads become Flora, a girl from the village, the innkeeper’s daughter Svetlana, and her suitor Frederick. To tell his ballet version of Dracula, Stevenson incorporates elements of great ballet classics, making this truly a neoRomantic production. This is not too dissimilar to how Bram Stoker himself, borrowed from other famous Gothic horror stories to create his novel. The character of Frederick resembles Franz, the suitor in Coppelia. In Act II, an old village woman looks back on her life and warns of bad things to come in an extended mime that is much like Giselle’s mother and when Flora later reveals herself to be a vampire, it recalls Giselle’s mad scene. In fact, the whole corps of Dracula’s brides resemble the vengeful Willis or ghostly Sylphs. Interestingly, the original Willis that the ballet Giselle was based on, were indeed vampire spirits who wreaked havoc on men. In this way Ben Stevenson has created a work that plays on many different levels and is not just great theater and dance but an intelligent exploration of the history of ballet. If you enjoy our revival of Ben Stevenson’s Dracula, please consider returning for our other program’s – each one widely different from the other. Directly following this run we go into a unique and intimate repertory program Rolling with the Stones. The program includes four Utah premieres, each one an unusual gem, including Christopher Bruce’s brilliant and cool Rooster to the early music of The Rolling Stones. 16

BALLET WEST DRACULA

From the Artistic Director No holiday season is complete, in my opinion, without our Mr. C’s magical production of The Nutcracker. In February we present that grand ballet classic Don Quixote – our first revival of it since 2012 - hilarious, engaging storytelling and dynamic challenging dancing make this both beautiful art and fun filled entertainment. Our Family Classics Series – designed exclusively for you children and their family’s will be The Glass Slipper, a Pamela Robinson-Harris delightful telling of the Cinderella story. In April, we pair the revivals of George Balanchine’s crystalline work to Bizet’s Symphony in C with Nicolo Fonte’s monumental Carmina Burana, Including a chorus of 70 singers suspended above the dancers singing out to the audience. In May, we present a new Works from Within introducing the world to new creations by Ballet West dancers as they emerge as the next generation of choreographer. During my tenure as Artistic Director of Ballet West, I have been blessed to be able to expand our annual home season’s programmatic offerings from three when I arrived in 2007 to now seven different productions. I am committed to giving our community the broadest spectrum of ballets from classic to modern, old and new. I hope you enjoy the diversity of offerings Ballet West presents. Thank you for your patronage,

Adam Sklute The Willam Christensen Artistic Director Chair Sponsored By Peggy Bergmann Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally soughtafter teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

26–27 SEASON

From the Executive Director We are pleased to bring back to the stage one of Ballet West’s most popular productions: Ben Stevenson’s Dracula. Perfect for the Halloween season, Dracula is one of the largest and most complex productions in our repertoire. You will be treated to several characters flying across stage, dark and gloomy scenes created with fog and haze, and outstanding dancing. Stevenson’s ability to tell a story with choreography that aligns perfectly with John Lanchbery’s arranged score of music by Franz Liszt makes this the gold standard of Draculas in the repertoire for ballet companies across America and the world. Fall always signals the start of the busy performance season for Ballet West, and while the summer months tend to have a more relaxed pace, this past summer included Ballet West’s inaugural Summit Festival: Where Art Meets Elevation. Sponsored by Bank of America, the three-day festival included From Root to Relevé, featuring dinner and performances hosted by Ballerina Farm, Raising Voices en Pointe, a collaboration with Park City Film Festival addressing Asian stereotypes embedded in classical ballet, and culminated in a performance at the Canyons featuring Ballet West and dancers from around the country who attended Ballet West’s and artEmotion’s choreographic workshop. More than 1,200 patrons turned out for the final performance, in spite of a stormy afternoon that left the evening performance in doubt. Yet the inclement weather did not stop dedicated Ballet West fans and hundreds of new faces from showing up and giving a standing ovation to the artists and choreographers who created new work for students of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy’s Summer Intensive. As we enter this season, we celebrate Adam Sklute’s 20th year at the helm of Ballet West as artistic director. There is much to look forward to, including November’s program of Company premieres featuring Christopher Bruce’s Rooster, set to the music of the Rolling Stones, Ulysses Dove’s Dancing On the Front Porch of Heaven, and two pas de deux by Christopher Wheeldon: This Bitter Earth and Je ne t’aime pas. Ben Stevenson’s Three Preludes, which returns after a 17-year hiatus, rounds out a contemporary program displaying our dancers’ versatility and technical prowess. We look forward to seeing you throughout the season and as always, we are grateful for the incredible support you have shown Ballet West over its long and distinguished history. When the curtain goes up on our 64th season, we are reminded that our success remains closely linked to you, our dedicated audience. Thank you! Gratefully yours,

Michael Scolamiero The Elizabeth Solomon Executive Director Chair Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.

BALLET WEST DRACULA

From the Board Chair In my second year as chair of the Board of Directors of our esteemed company, I have also assumed another role, that of Chair of the Search Committee charged with identifying a successor to Adam Sklute at the conclusion of this season. Adam’s accomplishments over his tenure of two decades are clearly evident on stage and beyond. We have assembled a remarkable group of individuals who are hard at work and I would like to share with you our progress and goals. The search is being spearheaded by Michael Kaiser, Chairman of the DeVos Institute of Arts and Nonprofit Management. During his forty-year career in arts management, Michael has served as Executive Director of the Kansas City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre and the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden). For fourteen years, he served as President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. We are grateful that Michael has agreed to work with us and make available to the committee the depth of his experience in the field of ballet and the performing arts. He is ideally qualified to assist the committee with this very important task. The response from individuals expressing interest in the position has been overwhelming. An impressive number of individuals who were broadly qualified for consideration were interviewed by Michael. The search committee worked with Michael to narrow the list down to approximately fifteen candidates who will be interviewed by the search committee in October. Following this round of interviews, the search committee will select finalists later in the fall. These individuals will travel to Salt Lake City to meet with the committee, Board members, dancers, staff and community representatives and patrons. It is our goal to select Adam’s successor by the end of 2026. The size and breadth of the candidate pool is no surprise given the outstanding reputation Ballet West has developed nationally and internationally over the past decade or so. Our company’s reputation is strong, with candidates expressing admiration for the work we produce on stage, the training we offer through the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, as well as the strong financial footing we have worked hard to establish. Clearly, this position is viewed as a much-coveted opportunity to lead one of America’s leading and most highly respected ballet companies. The search committee and the Board of Directors fully appreciate we are entrusted with a very important task, the outcome of which will chart Ballet West’s course for many years to come. I am confident we will appoint a worthy successor to Adam who will build upon his impressive accomplishments and lead Ballet West to even greater heights. Jennifer Huntsman Chair Board of Directors

Jared is a fellow of the American-Scandinavian Foundation and co-founder of the Composer Discovery Initiative.

AUBREY WOODS Concertmaster

Aubrey Woods’ rise as a professional violinist vividly demonstrates the versatility that is the sine qua non for twentyfirst century musicians. Her artistic leadership and excellence as concertmaster for Ballet West are consistently on display at the Capitol, Rose Wagner, and Eccles theatres in Salt Lake City. She frequently performs with the Utah Symphony Orchestra. She appeared for several years with the Orchestra at Temple Square in weekly worldwide broadcasts and on recordings with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and notable soloists, including Bryn Terfel and Renée Fleming. Aubrey is equally in demand as a studio recording artist for movies, television, and in backing tracks for many popular artists. Her performances as a chamber musician include appearances with NOVA, Intermezzo, the Park City Chamber Music Series and, on the Baroque violin, with New York Baroque Incorporated, the Sebastians, and Musica Angelica. She may often be heard in company with her husband, Alexander Woods, as the duo Woodsmith. In her free time, Aubrey loves making sourdough bread and spending time with her husband and their five kids.

Profiles BEN STEVENSON, O.B.E.

Choreographer and Artistic Director, Texas Ballet Theater A native of Portsmouth, England, Ben Stevenson, O.B.E. began his training at the Arts Education School in London. He appeared with the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and English National Ballet where, as a principal dancer, he performed leading roles in all the classics. During his professional career, Stevenson received numerous awards, including 3 gold medals at the International Ballet Competitions of 1972, 1982, and 1986. His contribution to ballet, as a dancer and choreographer, influences the art of ballet at an international level. In December of 1999, Queen Elizabeth II named Stevenson an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Ben Stevenson is a recipient of the 2000 Dance Magazine Award and was recognized in 2018 by the Chinese government as an influential foreign expert across four decades during China’s Reform and Opening Up policy. He is celebrated as a Texas legend, winning the Texas Medal of Arts in 2005 for achieving greatness through his creative talents. Mr. Stevenson is one of the great storytellers of ballet. Known for creating splendor on stage, his choreography is both world-renowned and in high demand across ballet companies worldwide. His full-length works include: The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Don Quixote, Peer Gynt, Dracula, The Snow Maiden, and Cleopatra.

FRANZ LISZT Composer

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian virtuoso pianist and composer. He studied and played at Vienna and Paris, and for most of his early adulthood toured throughout Europe giving concerts. His virtuosity earned him approbations by composers and performers alike throughout Europe. His great generosity with both time and money benefited the lives of many people: victims of disasters, orphans, and the many students he taught for free. He also contributed to the Ludwig van Beethoven memorial fund. His piano compositions include works such as his Piano Sonata in B minor, and two piano concertos, which have entered the standard repertoire. He also made many exuberant piano transcriptions of operas, famous symphonies, Paganini Caprices, and Schubert Lieder. As would be expected from a pianistcomposer of Liszt’s virtuosity, many of his piano compositions are amongst the most technically challenging in the repertoire.
