About Ballet West
From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 18 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 40 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 152,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.
The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newly-renovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.
With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and the world alive and thriving into the future.

From the Artistic Director
This Choreographic Festival marks Ballet West’s final performance of our 2025-26 season. It is a wonderful cap to what has been a powerful, dramatic, diverse and ground-breaking season.
This Festival is designed as a showcase for new choreography and a celebration of the broad diversity of dance companies from around the world. For each Festival, I invite national and international companies to join Ballet West as guest performers, sharing new creations alongside us while forging genuine camaraderia among artists across our unique styles and approaches. The Festival also gives our community an opportunity to experience the art of companies they may not otherwise get a chance to see.
This season, I decided to keep things close in physical proximity, but worlds away in dance styles and approaches. For the first time ever, we join forces with modern dance instead of ballet, creating a never-beforeseen program for Ballet West. Three of Salt Lake City’s leading modern dance companies will share our stage. Repertory Dance Theatre is one of Utah’s oldest dance companies. Since 1966 they have been bringing Utah audiences an eclectic mix of great historical modern dance masterpieces and new, cutting-edge creations. The RirieWoodbury Dance Company, founded in 1964, is an internationally acclaimed modern company known for its innovation and boundary-pushing choreography. The youngest of these Utah based organizations, SALT Contemporary Dance, was founded in 2013 and brings a fresh new voice to the dance scene world-wide. For our part, Ballet West will be presenting a world-premiere by Tony Award-nominated choreographer Donald Byrd, whose compelling and unique style extend the classical idiom by fusing it with his own contemporary energy and movement style.
Our four companies represent only the tip of the iceberg of great dance and performing arts that Utah has to offer. Part of my mission in putting this program together is to really highlight that fact, exposing the community to the brilliant spectrum of dance that we have right here in our state and exploring our special differences and wonderful common grounds.
I want to express my gratitude to these companies for joining us and thank each and every one of you for your support of Ballet West and dance in Utah.
Adam Sklute
The Willam Christensen Artistic Director Chair | Sponsored By Peggy Bergmann
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally soughtafter teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
From the Executive Director
Closing our 62nd season of spectacular dance is Choreographic Festival VII, Ballet West’s commitment to creating new work that inspires and advances our artform, keeping us relevant while challenging our audiences and dancers.
This is a history-making festival. At no other time have four reputable dance companies appeared on one program. We are delighted to bring you RirieWoodbury Dance Company, Repertory Dance Theatre, and SALT Contemporary Dance to give our audiences the opportunity to enjoy their unique aesthetic and style and showcase what makes them important members of Utah’s dance community.
The Choreographic Festival is also Ballet West’s opportunity to commission work specifically for our dancers. This year, the Tony Award nominee Donald Byrd has been invited to create his first work for Ballet West, one that promises to push boundaries and demonstrate the versatility of our dancers.
If you haven’t subscribed to the 2026-27 season, I urge you to do so quickly, since the best seats sell quickly! We have several company premiers, the return of Don Quixote, and Symphony in C for the first time in more than 10 years! Next season offers a hearty mix of audience favorites, premieres, and long-awaited revivals. Ballet West has enjoyed yet another successful season on stage and in the community. In addition to our extraordinary performances, more than 150,000 children and adults have been served by our Education and Outreach program through performances, school presentations, workshops, and virtual offerings. More than 900 students are enrolled in The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, the highest number in its history. The tremendous demonstration of support for Ballet West shown in numerous ways makes a profound difference, and for that we are grateful. Thank you for providing the foundation for our beloved company to grow and prosper.
All of us at Ballet West wish you a relaxing, safe and enjoyable summer!
Warm regards,
Michael Scolamiero
The Elizabeth Solomon Executive Director Chair
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits, and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.

Processional takes its inspiration from the Paris Opera Ballet's grand défilé, a centuries-old ceremony in which the company's dancers appear on stage in a sweeping parade. Struck by the revelation that a trained ballet dancer can transform something as simple as a walk into a moment of pure artistry, choreographer Donald Byrd builds from that most elemental movement outward, offering an intimate glimpse into the individual artistry of each dancer.

IGOR STRAVINSKY
Composer, Processional
Born in Russia, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) did not discover his musical talent until he enrolled in law school. There, under the influence of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky soon found the limelight in composing for Ballet Russes: Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). The latter work caused a celebrated scandal at its first performance and remains one of the best-known and most influential pieces of 20th century music. Stravinsky drew inspiration from a wide range of music, including contemporary artist Picasso, jazz movements in the United States, and a continuous interest in baroque and classical pieces. The restless, “spiky” rhythms and sharp, pungent harmonies run through Stravinksy’s work like an indelible musical fingerprint. These elements of his style, and the versatile ways in which he used them help to explain his status as one of the 20th century’s greatest composers.

Suk was born in Křečovice. He studied at Prague Conservatory from 1885 to 1892, where he was a pupil of Antonín Dvořák and Antonín Bennewitz. Suk’s early works show the influence of Dvořák and Johannes Brahms, while later pieces use more extended harmonies to create a personal and complex style. Unlike many of his countrymen, he made little use of Czech folk music. His best-known works are probably the youthful Serenade for Strings (1892) and the Asrael Symphony in C minor (1906), a work written in response both to the death in 1904 of his father-in-law, and the next year of his wife. (Norman Lebrecht listed Václav Talich’s 1952 recording of the Asrael Symphony with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra as one of the 100 best recordings of the century.) Other pieces include the Fairy Tale Suite “Raduz and Mahulena” (1898), the cycle of piano works Things Lived and Dreamed (1909), and the trilogy of symphonic poems A Summer’s Tale (1909), The Ripening (1917) and Epilogue (1929, for soprano, baritone and bass soli, chorus and orchestra).
