Welcome to Ballet West’s Family Classics Series and our revival of Beauty and the Beast

I created The Family Classics Series in 2012 as a way for children and their families to enjoy our art form of ballet and learn how to appreciate its unique combination of art, music, movement, and storytelling. It also was designed to create a performance platform for our renowned second company Ballet West II, and the students of our world-class Frederick Quinney Lawson Academy. In just over one hour, your entire family will be entertained by the dancing and music as it is accompanied by a narration that tells the tale.

Our production of Beauty & the Beast, which we premiered in the Spring of 2016, is based on the original story by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont and has a score arrangement of various pieces by composers Alexander Glazunov and Nikolai Tcherepin. The magical sets and costumes have many influences including Jean Cocteau’s brilliant 1946 film La Belle et la Bette. The libretto, musical arrangement, and choreography were created by Ballet West’s Principal Ballet Mistress, Pamela Robinson-Harris, and former Associate Director of Ballet West II, Peggy Dolkas and the ballet story unfolds with a wonderful mix of beauty, drama, joy, pathos, and humor. The narration also helps youngsters follow the action and learn how to interpret the movement and mime.

This Beauty and the Beast is a perfect ballet for children and adults from all walks of life. And in these fast-paced times, this program is a perfect opportunity for you and your family to take time and slow down for a short while, go to a theater and experience a live performance, art, music, and togetherness.

Adam Sklute Artistic Director, Ballet West

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

From the Executive Director

Now in its second decade, the Family Classics Series has become a mainstay of Ballet West’s outreach to young families. Shorter in length than typical ballets and with narration, the Family Classics ballets offer children the perfect introduction to ballet. Our goal is to make ballet enjoyable and accessible to all, therefore, the cost of admission to Beauty and the Beast, and our other Family Classics ballets are priced significantly lower than productions featuring the professional company.

Another important component of these programs is they afford students of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy valuable experience performing on stage at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, many of them taking on leading roles. Opportunities such as these distinguish our Academy from other training institutions, helping our students grow through experience and helping them develop poise while performing for large audiences, along with stage presence and acting skills that are so critical to conveying the plot of the ballets.

We are delighted to have you with us for the ever-popular Beauty and the Beast, and we are grateful to all of you for supporting this production with your attendance as well as those parents whose children are enrolled in the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. Michael Scolamiero Executive Director

Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

PAMELA ROBINSON HARRIS

Choreographer and Principal Rehearsal Director

Born in Landstuhl, Germany, Pamela received her formative training at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Joffrey School of Ballet Summer Intensive, and National Academy of the Arts. Graduating early from high school at 17, she received her first job as an apprentice with Cleveland Ballet, followed by the State of Alabama Ballet in 1982, and Ballet Mississippi in 1984. Pamela joined Ballet West in 1985, advancing to Principal in 1988. In 1997, Pamela joined the Ballet West Artistic Staff as a Ballet Mistress. She served from 2006-2007 as Ballet West’s Interim Artistic Director. Together with Associate Director of Ballet West II, Peggy Dolkas, she co-choreographed three ballets for Ballet West’s Family Classics Series – The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. She also reworked major sections of Ballet West’s productions of The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and Giselle, and has choreographed for Ballet West II and the Ballet West Academy Professional Training Division. Pamela has now been with Ballet West for over 33 years, and continues to serve as the company’s Principal Rehearsal Director.

PEGGY DOLKAS

Choreography

Born in Auburn, California, Peggy studied under Sheila Humphreys from The Royal Ballet of London. She trained at Canada’s National Ballet School in Toronto, where she graduated with honors, earning the Peter Dwyer Scholarship Award and the Christopher Ondaatjie Ballet Prize. Peggy danced for the National Ballet of Canada from 2000-2002 and in 2003 joined Ballet West. Peggy was promoted to Soloist in 2005 and performed numerous principal roles, including Aurora, Giselle, Odette/Odile, and Juliet. Peggy earned “Top 25 To Watch” in Dance Magazine, “Best Choreography” at the YAGP, and “Best Choreographer” in the Salt Lake City Arty’s Awards. Peggy was Ballet Mistress for Nevada Ballet Theatre from 2013-2015. She co-choreographed The Little Mermaid (2012), Aladdin (2013), and Beauty and the Beast (2016) with Pamela Robinson Harris for Ballet West’s annual Family Classics Series. In 2018, she won the Utah Arts Festival Commission Award. Peggy joined the Ballet West Artistic Staff in 2015 as Associate Director of Ballet West II.

CALVIN KITTEN

Director of Ballet West II and Rehearsal Director

Calvin Kitten began his dance training at the California Ballet School in San Diego, and continued training at the State Ballet School in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. Calvin joined the Joffrey Ballet in 1991. During his 19 years with the Joffrey, Calvin performed many Principal and Soloist roles while touring within the United States and internationally. Calvin has received two Ruth Page Awards, been featured on the cover of Dance Magazine, and appeared in numerous films. In 2010, Calvin joined the teaching faculty at the University of Utah’s ballet department. Calvin joined the Ballet West artistic staff as Director of Ballet West II in 2015.

EVELYN CISNEROS-LEGATE

Director of Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy Native Californian Evelyn Cisneros-Legate began studying ballet to overcome her profound shyness. After completing summer scholarships with the San Francisco Ballet School and the School of American Ballet, she began her apprenticeship with the San Francisco Ballet in 1976. She joined the Company in 1977 and soon began dancing principal roles, becoming a muse to the talents of Michael Smuin. Her repertoire with San Francisco Ballet included leading roles in both classical and contemporary pieces. Cisneros has been featured on the covers of several dance publications and received numerous awards for community activism and artistic achievements. She has honorary doctorate degrees from Mills College and the University of California at Monterey Bay. Cisneros retired from the San Francisco Ballet in 1999, and in 2001 she was appointed Ballet Education Coordinator in the San Francisco Ballet Center for Dance Education. She is currently on faculty at the University of California Irvine and has staged ballets for Val Caniparoli and Michael Smuin for numerous ballet companies. Cisneros co-authored “Ballet for Dummies” with conductor Scott Speck. She is married to retired principal dancer Stephen Legate, and their two children are their ultimate accomplishments and joy.

COURTNEY HELLEBUYCK

Student Rehearsal Director/Principal Faculty Ballet West Academy

Courtney Hellebuyck began her professional ballet training at the San Francisco Ballet School. She progressed through all of the levels and was then invited to be a part of the inaugural year of the San Francisco Ballet Trainee Program. She then went on to dance professionally with Pennsylvania Ballet, and toured to Edinburgh, Scotland in Christopher Wheeldon’s Swan Lake. From there, Courtney joined Smuin Ballet, under the Direction of Michael Smuin, where she danced in several World Premiere’s created on her by Michael. Ms. Hellebuyck then went on to join Cincinnati Ballet, and danced many leading roles including “Bomb Squad Girl” in Twyla Tharp’s “Upper Room”, “Marie” in Val Caniparoli’s Nutcracker, and Demi-Soloist in Balanchine’s Theme and Variations. After retiring from the stage, Courtney became FullTime Academy Faculty + Adult Programming at the Otto M. Budig Academy at Cincinnati Ballet. She has been certified to teach in Group Fitness from A.F.A.A. partnered through N.A.S.M. and has been certified in Barre Fitness at The Ballet Physique Fitness Studio. Courtney has taught every Division at Cincinnati Ballet, as well as being a Rehearsal Assistant for Nutcracker, Ballet West's Family Series at Cincinnati Ballet: Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, Snow White, and the World Premiere of Victoria Morgan’s Dancing to Oz. In August 2020, Ms. Hellebuyck became the Associate Artistic Director of Eastern Connecticut Ballet under the direction of Gloria Govrin, where she choreographed for ECB’s Virtual Nutcracker, as well as Spring Showcase. Since joining Ballet West as Student Rehearsal Director & Principal Faculty in 2021, Courtney has brought Nutcracker to the stage the past 3 seasons, with this season her highlight going on tour to The Kennedy Center and staging the production on local kids in the Washington D.C. Area, as well as setting the Family Series & Swan Lake.

Synopsis

An evil fairy, disguised as an old hag, begs a Prince for shelter from the storm. When he denies her access to his castle, she steals his heart, turning him into a hideous beast. Beauty’s father, the Merchant, learns that one of his lost ships has arrived at port and he prepares to claim his fortune. Beauty and her two spoiled sisters, Babette and Colette see him off as Henri, the Suitor, pursues Beauty’s affection.

The Merchant, upon his return home becomes lost in the forest during a dreadful storm and he seeks shelter in what seems to be a welcoming but empty castle. Weary from his travel, the Merchant enters the castle and treats himself to a sumptuous meal. Warm and cozy, he falls asleep. The next morning, the merchant wakes feeling refreshed, discovering he is now in a magical rose garden. While picking a rose for his daughter Beauty, the Beast appears and demands that the merchant must die for stealing his most prized possession - or one of his daughters must return in his place as a captive. Upon learning of her father’s fate, Beauty agrees to take his place in the castle. Beauty meets the Beast and bids her father adieu.

Beauty falls asleep in her bedroom in the Beast’s castle. With the help of the Good Fairy and the Castle Statues, she awakens in a new gown and meets the Beast for dinner where he asks for her hand in marriage. Later upon returning to her chamber, she dreams of a handsome Prince and wonders if she is alone in the castle. She decides to ask the Beast. The Beast asks for Beauty’s hand in marriage a second time and instead Beauty agrees to teach him how to dance.

After discovering that her father is ill, the Beast allows Beauty to travel home by way of a magic glove. The Merchant, happy to see her, begins to recover. Beauty is so happy that her father is better that she forgets her promise to the Beast to return to his castle. Beauty learns that the Beast is dying and does finally return to the castle, agreeing to marry him. Before his last breath, she offers her heart to the Good Fairy to save him.

Sinopsis

Una hada malvada, disfrazada de bruja vieja, le ruega a un príncipe que la proteja de la tormenta. To ensure the enjoyment of the majority of our patrons who arrive on time, and in deference to the artists, latecomers will not be admitted to the auditorium until there is an appropriate pause in the performance. During some productions, this pause may not occur until the end of the first act.

• Although masks are not required while attending Ballet West performances for the 2023-2024 season, we encourage patrons who wish to wear a mask to do so. If you are feeling unwell, experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or have had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, we ask that you follow CDC quarantine and isolation guidelines and prioritize your health and the health of your fellow audience members and stay home. Ballet West reserves the right to change or amend the health policy for performances in the future.

• All casting is subject to change.

• For your own safety and the safety of other patrons, please do not exit the Theatre before the house lights are up.

• Any use of cameras and recording equipment in the Theatre, which is not authorized by the management, is strictly prohibited.

• No babes in arms.

• Children under the age of 3 will not be permitted in the theatre

• Outside food and beverages are not allowed in the auditorium; as a courtesy to all patrons in attendance, food consumption is discouraged in the theatre during the performance.
