‘Friends are medicine for a wounded heart, and vitamins for a hopeful soul’ … Steve Maraboli
With his moving, visceral, and sometimes confronting A Case for the Existence of God, playwright Samuel D. Hunter sheds a compassionate light upon the humanistic, intimate, and sometimes fraught intricacies that can rise when forging new adult friendships.
The characters of Keith and Ryan, crafted in an aching realness by career-defining performances of Jon Hudson Odom and Lee Osorio, are set upon a path of divine reckoning by way of a chance encounter. Mutual curiosity and a genuine regard for one another ignites a journey of self-actualization and revelation for them both, engaging as way-showers for one another’s deeply personal reckoning.
While always a privilege for this director to serve as midwife to actors in the process of giving birth, shape, and meaning to their characters, it is the rare gift to also bear witness to an authentic and empathetic bonding by those same actors. In a deft life imitating art dynamic between Jon and Lee, who only met for the first time at the start of our rehearsals—they have redefined the potency, purity, and impact of this thing called chemistry. By surrendering their combined talents and souls to the stirring language and circumstance so gorgeously crafted by the playwright, together they shine a caring light of radiant faith and hope, reflecting the promise of a way forward—even during challenging times…a promise unfailingly manifested in the flow of genuine friendship, and when in the presence of live performance.
Timothy Douglas, Director
Have you seen the insert with the titles for next season? I can’t tell you how hard it has been to keep these productions a secret! As you know, season planning begins about a year before the announcement comes–so I have had to keep several of these wonderful shows in the “top-secret” folder for quite a while. I am also excited that next season includes several of the top-vote-getters from our season survey, as well as the world premiere of a new musical and THREE other Utah premieres. In this program, I will give you some “intel” for the first three shows and finish out the rest of the titles in the Waitress program in May.
We are opening the season at the Meldrum Theatre with 2 Pianos 4 Hands a delightful, artistic tour de force. Amidst determined parents, quirky teachers, endless hours of practice, stage nerves, fierce competition. Amid the pursuit of excellence, Ted and Richard grew up as devoted “piano nerds.” Musical wizardry and roaring comedy combine as these two savants play classical, pop, and everything in-between, all while portraying dozens of characters that took part in their quest for musical greatness. This one will be fun for the whole family and a great way to kick off our season!
Next up is Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s groundbreaking and award-winning musical, Dear Evan Hansen. Evan Hansen has always felt like he’s on the outside looking in; his severe anxiety makes it hard to connect. But when tragedy strikes his community, he unexpectedly finds himself at the heart of a growing misunderstanding—one that offers him a chance to reinvent himself. This deeply moving story won both the Tony and Olivier awards for Best Musical and speaks to both children and parents alike.
Your holiday season will start off with a smile when you join us for one of the funniest shows of all time, Noises Off. This zany tribute to “theatre people” everywhere delivers non-stop laughter and classical theatrical mayhem. Next year will be a season not to be missed – so renew your subscription now! In the meantime, I have to get started on titles for 2026-27! Thank you for supporting live theatre and enjoy the show.
Karen Azenberg, PTC Artistic Director
