MEET NOTES TONIGHT The preseason No. 5-ranked Utah gymnasts (0-0, 0-0 Pac-12) host No. 12-ranked Kentucky (0-0, 0-0 SEC) to open 2020 season at 6 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. The meet will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks and broadcast on ESPN 700 radio.

QUICK STICKS The season opener against Kentucky will be the first time since 2008 that the Utes face an SEC program in the first meet of the year … This is the fifth-straight season Utah will begin the year within the friendly confines of the Huntsman Center … Utah led all NCAA women’s sports in attendance for the ninth time in 2019, averaging 14,852 fans per meet … Utah was tabbed as the No. 5 team in the nation for the third consecutive year in the WCGA preseason poll … The Utes were picked to finish second in the preseason Pac-12 coaches’ poll behind defending Pac-12 champion UCLA.

FAITH IN FARDEN Now with sole reign of the program, Tom Farden is no stranger to the role now in his fifth year as head coach.

Despite the loss of Red Rock legend Megan Marsden with her retirement after the 2019 season, Farden is primed to continue the legacy and tradition instilled in the program.

Now entering his 10th year overall in Salt Lake City, Farden has been a force for Utah for years with his instrumental roles in recruiting, training, staff hires, and oversight of the entire program. With his relentless work ethic and enthusiasm for the sport, the Utes are in good hands with Farden at the helm of the program as they enter a new era of Utah gymnastics.

UTE INSIDER Utah returns 10-of-24 routines from last year’s NCAA Championships seventh-place finish … The Red Rocks return eight letterwinners, which includes two All-Americans in Missy Reinstadtler (all-around) and Sydney Soloski (floor) … Five newcomers joined Utah in the offseason … Junior Emilie LeBlanc transferred from Maryland where she was a bars and beam specialist, while Utah welcomed a freshman class of two former U.S. National team members (Maile O’Keefe and Abby Paulson) and two Junior Olympic national champions (Jillian Hoffman and Jaedyn Rucker) … Team captains for this year’s team are Reinstadtler, Kim Tessen, and Sydney Soloski.

COACHES CORNER Promoted to assistant coach, Carly Dockendorf will lead efforts on beam for the Red Rocks. The 2020 season will mark Dockendorf’s third year as a member of the staff after previously serving in other capacities for Utah. Needing to reload the staff, Farden brought two strong additions in Garrett Griffeth and Courtney McCool Griffeth. Garrett has already made an impact as a tireless recruiter for the Utes and serves as the vault coach. A 2004 Olympic silver medalist and NCAA champion, Courtney brings phenomenal experience from her time as a gymnast at Georgia in choreography and has given the Red Rocks a significant boost on floor as the event coach.

CHALK TALK Cristal Isa saw action in the all-around at the Red Rocks Preview and is slated to compete on all four events against Kentucky … Emilie LeBlanc looks to be a lock in the leadoff role for Utah on bars and beam … Sydney Soloski has added vault back into her skillset and will be in the lineup for the first scored vault of her career … All three freshmen that are available to compete – Jillian Hoffman, Maile O’Keefe, and Abby Paulson – will make their Utah debuts against Kentucky … Utah is seven to eight deep on each event and lineups could vary meet to meet.

TIME TO TUNE IN The Utah-Kentucky meet will air on the Pac-12 Networks and be broadcast on Utah’s flagship radio station, ESPN 700.

Jim Watson will serve as the play-by-play announcer for the Pac-12 Networks, while Samantha Peszek will be on the call as the color analyst. Joining ESPN 700’s play-by-play announcer Mike Lageschulte this season as the color analyst is former Ute All-American Kyndal Pond.

FOR THE FANS Fans wishing to meet the team can stick around for the postmeet autograph session … Ford Kids Zone will be Frozenthemed with the first 250 kids receiving a Utah Gymnastics

UP NEXT Utah will compete in the inaugural Rio Tinto Best of Utah NCAA Gymnastics meet at the Maverik Center on Saturday, Jan. 11. This is the first staging of the five-year podium event. The meet will feature all four in-state Division I gymnastics programs as the Utes will take on No. 23 BYU, No. 26 SUU and Utah State.

TOM FARDEN Head Coach 5th/10th Year

om Farden assumed sole leadership of the Utah gymnastics program last April after serving as the co-head coach since 2016.

Farden managed Utah’s overall program the past four years, including training, recruiting, staff hires and oversight. He also coached the uneven bars and tumbling. With Farden sharing the program’s reins with Megan Marsden, Utah qualified into the NCAA Championships all four years and reached the Super Six team final twice. The Utes also won three regional titles and the 2017 Pac-12 Championship.

Farden was no novice when he became Utah’s co-head coach in 2016, having spent six years running the program at Southeast Missouri State, where he was the 2008 NCAA Region Coach of the Year. Farden is now in his 10th year at Utah, having served as an assistant coach his first five years.

Farden has a 90-33-1 record at Utah and his career record of 161-81-1 includes a 71-48 mark from 2004-09 at Southeast Missouri State.

Farden has coached three NCAA individual champions at Utah (Georgia Dabritz on bars and MyKayla Skinner on floor and vault), 16 NCAA Regional champions, 15 Pac-12 title winners and the recipients of 77 All-America awards. Skinner was the 2017 and 2018 NCAA all-around runner-up and set the Pac-12 record with 16 all-conference awards. Farden also coached the 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Sabrina Schwab and 2016 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year Kassandra Lopez.

A native of Dayton, Minn., Farden earned his bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation from SEMO in 2004. He and his wife Christina have a son, Ki.

A

CARLY DOCKENDORF Assistant Coach 1st/3rd Year

member of Utah’s staff for the past two years, Carly Dockendorf is in her first season as an assistant coach. Dockendorf spent the 2019 season as the team’s director of recruiting and player development and was Utah’s volunteer coach and choreographer in 2018.

Dockendorf, whose background includes a decade of college coaching, spent six years at Seattle Pacific as an assistant gymnastics coach (2009, 2013-17) and three years as SPU’s assistant track and field coach (2010-12). She also coached at Falcon Gymnastics Center from 2012-17 before joining the Ute staff. She has coached four NCAA All-Americans during her time at Utah. When Dockendorf was working at Seattle Pacific, she coached five USAG national champions and 21 All-Americans.

Dockendorf was two-sport NCAA All-American in gymnastics and track & field at Washington. She claimed the 2003 Pac-10 Conference championship on bars, scoring a 10.0, and was a second-team All-American that season. She set a school record with six 10.0 scores in her career, including five on floor. As a pole vaulter in track & field, Dockendorf placed in the top 11 twice at the NCAA Championships.

The Port Moody, B.C., native is married to Henry Ruggiero, who is Utah’s executive director for Olympic sports performance. They have two daughters: Crosby and Hayden.

GARRET T GRIFFETH Assistant Coach 1st Year

irst-year assistant coach Garrett Griffeth comes to Utah after two years at Arkansas. Griffeth’s primary responsibilities will be coaching the vault and playing a key role in recruiting.

In his first year at Arkansas in 2018, the Razorbacks advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in five seasons. He was promoted to associate head coach in 2019. Griffeth first made a name as an assistant at Division II powerhouse Texas Woman’s University from 2014-17. He was the 2014 Coaches Association Division II Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2017 Midwest Independent Conference Assistant Coach of the Year.

He coached 16 USAG All-Americans on vault and bars, a USAG national bar champion and two USAG bar runners-up at TWU. In his final season, the Pioneers won the 2017 USAG National Championship.

Griffeth prepped for an NCAA coaching career at the Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy from 2012-13, and at Georgia, where he was a graduate assistant coach in 2011 and a full-time administrative associate in 2012.

A native of Roswell, Ga., Griffeth earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise sport science (concentration in athletic training) in 2010 and a master’s in sports management and policy in 2011 from Georgia. He is married to Courtney McCool and they have a daughter, Rae.

COURTNEY MCCOOL GRIFFETH

Volunteer Coach/Choreographer 1st Year

ourtney McCool Griffeth has competed alongside, coached and choreographed some of the best gymnasts in the world. In her new position with the Red Rocks, Griffeth will assist with choreographing routines and coaching floor and beam. She will also serve as the co-director of Utah’s summer camps.

Griffeth brings six years as a coach and choreographer at the NCAA level to Utah, previously spending two years at Arkansas (2018-19) and four years at Texas Woman’s University (2014-17). She has more than a decade of experience coaching and choreographing routines at camps and clubs around the country.

As a competitor, Griffeth won the all-around at the 2004 Olympic Test Event in Athens, Greece and placed second in the all-around at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. She participated for the silver medalist U.S. team at 2004 Olympics in Athens. From 2007-10, she competed for Georgia, helping the GymDogs to NCAA titles from 2007-09 (edging runner-up Utah in ’07 and ’08). She was the 2008 NCAA floor champion and a first-team All-American from 2008-10.

The Kansas City, Mo., native earned a bachelor’s degree in child and family development in 2011 and a master’s in sports management and policy in 2012 from Georgia. She is married to Garrett Griffeth and hey have a daughter, Rae.

JENNIFER WHITE Chief of Staff New Media Director 4th Year

J

ennifer White is in her fourth year as the gymnastics chief of staff/new media director. White manages the Utah gymnastics social media accounts, public relations and team travel. She is also involved with gymnastics ticket sales and revenue.

White stepped into her current role after eight years with the Ute marketing staff—four as the director.

She graduated from Weber State in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and earned a master’s in education/sport management from Georgia in 2007. The former Jennifer Binkley was a Utah state all-around champion in level 8 and 10. She is married to Aaron White and they have two sons, Kingston and Maximus.

Creative Content Manager Athlete Development 1st Year

M

isty-Jade Carlson, a former gymnast at Iowa, is the first full-time creative content manager as a sport-specific, non-coaching staff member in college gymnastics.

Carlson is responsible for developing and creating graphics and videos to promote Utah gymnastics on all of its digital platforms. She also oversees academic registration, monitors study table and mentoring sessions, and tracks academic progress.

The three-time Big Ten AllAcademic team selection and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar graduated from Iowa with two degrees in mass communication and graphic design in 2019.

Athletic Trainer 9th Year

K

atie Lorens is in her ninth year as the athletic trainer for the Utah gymnastics team. She also serves on the Utah Athletics wellness committee.

Prior to her time at Utah, Lorenz worked as the athletic trainer for the University of California-Berkeley football and men’s and women’s gymnastics teams. The Chicago native completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois ChampaignUrbana in kinesiology with an emphasis in athletic training. Lorenz earned her master’s degree at Illinois State University in biomechanics/athletic training. She is married to Benjamin Naugle.

T

he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue. This year, the iconic venue is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007.Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ‘82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 14 NCAA regional championships and two Pac-12 Championships.

Utah has led the nation in gymnastics attendance 35 of the last 38 years and has won nine all-women’s sports attendance titles, including the last seven in a row. The Utes have averaged nearly 12,000 fans a meet since 1990 and over 14,590 a meet since 2010.

Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-the-art sound system, brighter and energyefficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse. New videoboards were installed in the fall of 2017 at a cost of $4.1 million.

Also calling the Huntsman Center home are

the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81), including the 1979 Final Four starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
