Junior center Jayce Johnson works to continue to improve his game with an eye toward a bright future.

From a young age while growing up in California, Jayce Johnson was a lover of all sports, trying everything from hockey to baseball, soccer and volleyball. Then at the age of eight, he finally found his true calling with the sport of basketball.

“I tried almost every single sport to see what I liked, and then I decided to try basketball because both my brother and my sister played,” Johnson recalled.

“I just loved the physicality of basketball. Hockey was physical as well, but a sport like volleyball wasn’t. I just liked how basketball had a little bit of everything.

It was physical, you had to have finesse, and it was a sport that you needed to perfect in order to get yourself noticed.”

Once Johnson reached the seventh grade, he started playing competitive basketball and joined multiple travel teams. The most notable team that he played for was the Earl Watson Elite, and that experience in particular help his game blossom.

“Playing for the Earl Watson Elite was great for me. Coach Silva really backed me. He gave me so many opportunities, and if I wouldn’t have had him I wouldn’t have had the offers that I got,” Johnson explained. “He really pushed me and always had me talking with college coaches, and he is part of the reason why I am here today.”

Johnson attended Santa Monica High School, which was also a great place for him to develop his skills.

During his time there, he played with Jonah Mathews, who now plays for USC, and played against the likes of Chimezie Metu, who is now a member of the San Antonio Spurs G League team. Some of the honors he earned at Santa Monica were being tabbed a Top-100 Under Armour All-American. He was also ranked the No. 47 overall recruit by 247sports.com and the No. 11-ranked center overall in the 2016 class by ESPN.

“I had some good memories at Santa Monica and some great teammates there as well. It was just cool that I got to play with and against a couple guys in high school who I now play against in the Pac-12,” said Johnson. “I loved Santa Monica. It was a great area. We could walk down to the beach right from the school.

There was great competition around me, and it helped me get ready for the collegiate level.”

With his accolades in high school and the attention he got from his success at the AAU level, Johnson was a heavily sought after player. Even

RUNNIN’ UTE PLAYER FEATURE though he had offers from many schools in different conferences, he knew that the University of Utah was the school for him.

“I came to Utah because of the coaching staff.

I really felt comfortable with them, and Coach K is a big man so he feels our pain,” Johnson joked. “He also played in the NBA and really knows his stuff. The atmosphere when I got here on my official visit made me feel very comfortable. I just felt like this was the place for me.”

Graduating high school at midterm, Johnson was able to join the Utes in January of 2016 as an earlyenrolled student. Even though he sat out the semester as a redshirt, the early exposure that Johnson was able to get to collegiate basketball provided him with a tremendous amount of experience before he even played in his first game as a Ute.

“With graduating high school early, I was able to kind of experience college basketball before I actually played it,” Johnson explained. “It was good to be able to have that redshirt year, just to see what things were like and learn from all the older guys above me.

I would say that it wasn’t necessarily hard, but it did take some time to get used to.”

In his first season as a redshirt freshman,

Johnson played in all 32 games and started six. He averaged 4.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game with 20 blocks on the year. In his sophomore season in 2017-18, Johnson improved those numbers to 5.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game with 28 blocked shots. He also shot 55.2 percent from the field and registered a new career high of 15 points against Arizona State.

Now in his junior year with the Utes, Johnson continues to be a main contributor for the team and is seeing more playing time than in his two previous seasons. Through 15 games, Johnson is averaging 6.3 points, 5.7 boards and one blocked shot in 18.3 minutes per game. With his senior season still ahead of him, Johnson has high aspirations for when his time with the University of Utah is over.

“My dream has always been to play in the NBA. I’ve been working as hard as I can and showing my stuff. When the time comes, I know I’ll be ready,” said Johnson. “The NBA is where I want to be. I just have to keep pushing hard and working out. I just have to keep grinding, that’s all I have to do.”

Johnson is a very determined and hardworking individual. He is also a selfless teammate who wants to do whatever is possible to see this Ute squad succeed.

Jayce Johnson has been a shot blocking force his entire career and has averaged a rejection a game this season.

Continuing to improve every year and making his presence known in the Pac-12, the ceiling remains very high for Johnson as he points toward his last year and a half as a Ute.

“I was looked at by east coast and west coast schools, but Utah was just the best fit. I love the coaches and the people around the program, and you know what they’re about here.” Battin said.

Head coach Larry Krystkowiak’s influence in the recruiting process was critical in Battin’s decision.

“I just really liked how he puts his players first.

A lot of coaches will just tell you what you want to hear to get you to come to their school, but I could tell Coach K was genuine and I’ve seen that ever since I’ve been here.”

Battin is one of three freshmen playing significant roles for the Runnin’ Utes. Through 16 games, Battin had made 10 starts and was averaging 6.8 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Even with a record hovering around the .500 mark in mid-January after facing a difficult non-conference schedule against the likes of Kentucky and Nevada, Battin trusts the process at Utah and knows that every game is a chance to gain experience and get better.

“I think we’re getting better every day and that we’ll keep building off this for years to come,” Battin said, “It was good to play those teams. I think more than anything, experience is what we gained from it.

We’re trying to get to that level.”

For Battin, he doesn’t intend for the road to end at Utah. He plans to peruse his dream of playing in the NBA.

“It’s been my dream since I was a little kid, and I’m not gonna stop until I get there. I definitely think Utah will have me on the right track,” Battin said.

Given the recent success of Utah producing NBA players with Delon Wright, Jakob Poeltl and Kyle Kuzma moving on, Battin is in good company and off on a fast start.

For some athletes, the decision of which sport to play is difficult. One of the more-recent, well-known dilemmas of that nature was the one experienced by Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Kyler Murray, who was drafted to play professional baseball

Battin, however, never faced this dilemma.

“I’ve just always loved it, ever since a young age,” Battin explained. “People always try out different sports but my sport was always basketball. I’ve just kept with it throughout my whole life and it’s helped me get to where I am today.”

Putting his time and effort into basketball ultimately helped Battin become a dominant player in high school, and colleges took notice. He averaged 25.7 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.4 blocked shots

TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTER SCIENCES

The U.’s entertainment arts and engineering program has earned a top three rating seven years running according to Animation Career Review. The University’s School of Computing, which earned a top 60 world ranking in 2016, was founded in 1965 and began a pioneering legacy in computer graphics and visualization that continues today.

The College of Engineering’s undergraduate program was ranked 40th by College Choice in 2017.

The Scientific Computing & Imaging Institute is internationally recognized.

MEDICINE

University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, a Level I trauma center, was ranked No. 1 in the nation in quality, safety and accountability in 2016 and has annually ranked among the nation’s top 10 academic medical centers. U.S. News & World Report placed the school of medicine’s programs in primary care, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, and nursing in the nation’s top 30.

The U.’s surgeons were the first in the world to conduct a permanent artificial heart implant in 1982.

More recently, the Utah Genome Project is one of several innovative medical research programs at the U. Other notable programs include the nationally-recognized Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Clinical Neurosciences Center and the Moran Eye Center.

BUSINESS SCHOOL

The David Eccles School of Business’ undergraduate program has been rated among the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report in the past five years. In the magazine’s most recent rankings, the full-time MBA program jumped to No. 44 and the part-time MBA program soared to No. 60. The school also has been placed in the top 25 for

entrepreneurship seven straight years by the Princeton Review. The U.’s graduate accounting program was rated top 35 in the nation.

COLLEGE OF LAW

The S.J. Quinney College of Law was ranked 54th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2018. It also earned top 20 ratings for practical training, as well as its and public defender/prosecutor law and environmental law programs.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Utah’s College of Education soared eight spots to No. 58 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings in 2018.

Its special education and master’s programs were also highly rated by College Choice in 2017.

JON M. HUNTSMAN CENTER CHAMPIONSHIP VENUE

Regarded as one of the top college arenas in the nation since opening its doors in 1969, the Jon M. Huntsman Center has provided an imposing home advantage for Utah teams the past 47 years.

A landmark on the U. campus, the Jon M. Huntsman Center is the perfect place to watch a sporting event. With 15,000 chair seats (8,400 for volleyball and women’s basketball with lower bowl seating only) assuring a great view from anywhere in the arena, the Huntsman Center is the largest venue in the Pac-12 Conference.

More than eight million fans have watched the Runnin’ Utes in the Huntsman Center, where the team is 593-145 (.803) all-time with winning records in 42 of the last 43 seasons—including eight undefeated campaigns. Utah attracted a total of 216,914 fans for an average of 12,051 per contest in 2016-17. The Utes have drawn more than 200,000 fans inside the Huntsman Center in each of the past four seasons.

New to the Huntsman Center in 2017-18 were a newly-designed center-hung video display system, four new corner boards hung from the ceiling structure and four boards on the walls of the lower bowl, totaling $4.1 million.

The Huntsman Center underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The original ceiling cloud was replaced with a super grid structure. Energy efficient LED arena lighting, which accommodates instant on and off, was installed. A new state-of-theart sound system and ceiling mounted sound panels provide greater clarity.

The project also included a draping system, offering a more intimate setting in the arena’s lower bowl for smaller events. New banners were hung to honor Utah’s all-time greatest teams and retired jerseys, and a maple wood floor was installed with an updated graphics and color scheme. The locker rooms have also been renovated in recent years, funded in part by donations from former Ute basketball AllAmericans Andrew Bogut and Andre Miller totaling $325,000.

Underground tunnels stretching 2,220 feet connect the arena with the four-building HPER complex, which underwent a renovation before the 2015-16 season. The $36 million project included the new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center, which houses the men’s and women’s basketball programs, and the Sorenson Legacy Foundation High Performance Center, a state-of-the-art sports medicine and strength & conditioning facility.

The Jon M. Huntsman Center has been long recognized as a site of NCAA Championship events.

In men’s basketball, the Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for the most NCAA Tournament games hosted, with 81 contests having been played in the facility. The JMHC played host to the 1979 NCAA Basketball Championship “Dream Match-Up” featuring Indiana State’s Larry Bird and Michigan State’s Magic Johnson.

The men’s NCAA regional tournament came to the Huntsman Center twice (1971 and ‘81). First and second round games took place 13 times (most recently in 2006).

Also a famous women’s gymnastics venue, the Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national gymnastics championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships (most recently in 2007). Utah has also hosted 14 regional meets (most recently in 2018) and two Pac-12 Championships (most recently in 2015).

Women’s basketball has hosted NCAA tournament first and second round games in 2001 and 2011. The NCAA women’s volleyball tournament visited the Huntsman Center for the first time in 2017 with the Utes winning the Salt Lake Sub-Regional.

JON M. & KAREN HUNTSMAN BASKETBALL FACILITY

The Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility, a state-of-the-art, $36 million, 101,000-square-foot structure, opened northeast of the Huntsman Center arena on Oct. 1, 2015. The four-story building features a legacy hall, separate glass-enclosed upper levels for both the men’s and women’s programs, and a rooftop terrace.

The ground floor entrances to the facility lead into the Kem and Carolyn Gardner Legacy Hall. Banners bearing images of the former Ute basketball greats hang from a 38-foot-high ceiling. A pictorial history of the men’s and women’s basketball programs lines the walls alongside a massive 30-foot raised circle and feather logo. The 6,000-square-foot hall is bathed in natural light from clearstory windows.

Expansive viewing balconies overlooking the men’s and women’s practice gymnasiums are accessible via Legacy Hall. The configuration of both gyms is ideal for practice because it allows coaches to run five simultaneous drills without impacting one another. The courts are an exact replica of the one in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The gymnasiums also contain a video editing area, courtside taping

tables and cardio equipment. A glass-enclosed yoga room shared by both teams overlooks the women’s practice court.

Other features of level one include a shared space for pre-game meals and donor functions.

Both teams have separate theaters complete with projection screens and whiteboard walls, as well as player lounges with six 55-inch televisions, custom-built furniture and gaming consoles. The team locker rooms, which are 700-square-feet in size, are also found on level one. In addition to custom lockers, showers and restrooms, they boast in-ground hot and cold tubs that face 80-inch television screens.

The women’s and men’s basketball offices, recruiting lounges, conference rooms and coaches’ lounges are located on levels three and four, respectively. All assistant coaches have window offices and private balconies. Across the hall are offices for administrative and video staff.

The head coaches have L-shaped 935-squarefoot offices encased in floor-to-ceiling glass with private balconies. They are equipped with fireplaces, 60-inch televisions that retract into the ceiling when not in use, and surround sound.

Above level four is a rooftop terrace, bordered by

a garden with low-water and drought-resistant plants, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges, the University of Utah campus, downtown Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake. It includes a fire pit, gas grill and Utah-themed patio furniture.

A series of existing tunnels connects level one to the HPER facilities, the Sorenson High Performance Center and Burbidge Family Athletics-Academic Center—which serve all of Utah’s student-athletes— as well as the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

“I truly feel that the Huntsman Basketball Facility is one of the nicest facilities on the planet,” said head men’s basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak. “I have been around a lot of the facilities in the country at both the NCAA and NBA levels, and this is the nicest. I say that not only because it is ours, but because the unrivaled amenities inside are complimented by the spectacular views in every direction.”

The Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility was built in conjunction with the state-ofthe-art Sorenson High Performance Center, which opened in May 2015. The 20,000-square foot facility has conditioning and strength training space; an athletic training, rehabilitation and hydrotherapy area; and a refueling/nutrition station.

SORENSON HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER

The state-of-the-art Sorenson Legacy Foundation High Performance Center, a two-story, 20,000-square-foot structure located northwest Jon M. Huntsman Center, opened in the summer of 2015.

The facility provides everything a student-athlete needs to achieve their peak level of performance— ranging from nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and sports psychology—all within close proximity to maximize time efficiency.

The ground floor features a 9,500-square-foot sports medicine facility and a 500-square-foot fueling station, while an expansive 10,000-squarefoot strength and conditioning center resides on the top floor. Two exterior entrances are located off the southeast corner of the building, while a refurbished tunnel system connects the performance center to the existing HPER complex, the Jon M. Huntsman Center and the Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility.

The sports medicine area features 18 treatment tables—including one traction table—six taping stations, a hydrotherapy area, a functional rehabilitation space and cardio area, and three exam rooms.

The rehab area features Optojump and forceplate machines, and a Delos postural proprioception system. A pair of Wattbikes and two Alter-G treadmills, which use air pressure to alleviate body weight so that athletes can start conditioning earlier after injury, are also included. The treatment area offers several modalities, including Game Ready, Dynatron with thermoprobe, Diathermy Hivamat, and NormaTec recovery systems.

The expansive hydrotherapy area includes a plunge pool in the shape of a block U, half containing cold water and half hot water with a capacity of 20 people per side. It also houses a Hydroworks 2000 underwater treadmill equipped with cameras and television monitors, allowing athletes to watch their subsurface work.

Six offices for the full-time staff and one

office for graduate assistants are also included, as well as an area to make custom orthodics, mouthpieces and splints.

The second-floor strength and conditioning center has 12 work stations, allowing athletes to train efficiently in a sport-specific program. It also includes a PLAE turf running surface, measuring five yards wide by 35 yards in length. Agility and plyometric sprinting drills performed in this area allow athletes to enhance movement patterns that transfer to their sport.

Keiser air pressurized equipment has been installed, allowing for greater training variation while providing instant feedback of athletes’ movement power. The strength and conditioning center also includes Woodway treadmills, a Hammer Strength line, and a variety of other means to maximize athletes’ performance.

The fueling station, located adjacent to the lobby area on the ground floor, offers a variety of snacks to help athletes intake the necessary levels of carbs and proteins within the critical 30-minute window after a workout to help their bodies recover.

UTAH TRADITIONS

The University of Utah officially adopted the nickname “Utes” for its athletic teams in 1972. The school uses the nickname with permission of the Ute Tribal Council.

Like the Utah Marching Band, the Pep Band offers students the opportunity to serve as ambassadors for the U. at home games, as well as Pac-12 Conference and NCAA basketball tournament games. Both music and non-music majors perform contemporary, pop and jazz band music, creating a lively, fun atmosphere.

“What is a Ute?” The Utes are an Indian tribe that originally settled Utah. Two of the more common definitions of Ute are “top of the mountains” and “people of the mountains.” Other references have Ute Verse defined as “land of the sun.” The Utes refer I am a Utah Man/Fan, sir, and I live across the green, to themselves as “Noochew,” meaning “the Our gang it is the jolliest that you have ever seen.

The Block U (elevation 5,300 feet above sea level) was built on Mount Van Cott bordering the Utah campus in 1907. Lights on the 100-foot-tall landmark are illuminated primarily for athletic events and to notify people in the Salt Lake valley that the Utes are playing at home (the lights flash after a Utah victory).

Originally built with limestone, the Block U was later replaced by a cement version. In 1969, the design was modified and 124 lights were installed. A fundraising campaign in 2006 raised $400,000 to renovate the aging landmark. Slabs of concrete and steel rebar now reinforce the 5,000-square feet of surface area.

Another major improvement was the installation of light emitting diode (LED) red and white lights, which are controlled through a wireless system.

The MUSS, one of the most avid and vocal student fan clubs in the nation, currently sponsors fan clubs for the Utah football, men’s basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams. The name MUSS was originally derived from the school fight song lyrics (… No rival band of college fans dare meet us in the muss).

Members now refer to MUSS as an acronym for “Mighty Utah Student Section.”

The MUSS turns 17 years old this season.

Originally known as the Student Fan Club and the Utah Fan Club, the group adopted the name MUSS for the 2002 football season.

Watch for the MUSS to regularly “Throw up a U,” a tradition that began at the Utah women’s gymnastics meets in 2001 and soon caught on with all the Ute teams and fans.

DR. RUTH V. WATKINS on matters related to faculty, staff and students. She also helped set the U’s strategic direction and align its resources with academic priorities.

Dr. Watkins came to Utah in 2013 from the University of Illinois, where she spent 20 years in leadership and faculty roles, including associate provost for undergraduate education, vice provost and chief of staff, and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

She began her academic career at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Watkins graduated with highest honors from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology. She earned a master’s

degree and a doctorate in child language at the University of Kansas; her scholarship focuses on communication development and disabilities in young children.

Dr. Watkins’ research and training endeavors have been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Education, as well as Lumina Foundation. She also has a certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology. In 2003, she was named a fellow of the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association. Dr. Watkins has received recognition for excellence in teaching; her scholarship has been widely published in journals and books.

MARK HARLAN

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS | 1ST YEAR Mark Harlan, a veteran administrator with Pac-12 ties, was named director of athletics at the University of Utah on June 1, 2018. Harlan, who assumes the helm of Utah athletics after four years as the athletics director at the University of South Florida, brings more than 20 years of athletics administration experience at five universities to his new post.

Prior to his appointment at USF in 2014, Harlan served as the senior associate athletics director for external relations at UCLA, senior vice president for central development at Arizona, senior associate athletics director at San Jose State and associate athletics director at Northern Colorado.

Most recently, the Los Angeles native spearheaded record competitive, academic and fundraising accomplishments at South Florida, while also negotiating new multimedia rights and apparel partnerships.

In his tenure at USF, the Bulls won 14 American Athletic Conference titles. Nine USF programs ranked in the top 25 in 2015-16 when the Bulls led the AAC in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings.

The football program, which went 2-10 the year before Harlan’s hiring, surged to a 21-4 record in his last two years, including a school-record 11 wins in 2016.

The Bulls made three straight bowl appearances from 2015-17–beating bowl opponents from the SEC and Big 12 in 2016 (South Carolina) and 2017 (Texas Tech).

They appeared in the final AP poll for the first time in 2016, when they were ranked No. 19 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. In 2017, Harlan hire Charlie Strong led the Bulls to a 10-2 record and a No. 21 final ranking.

Other USF teams also excelled nationally under Harlan’s oversight. In 2015, the men’s golf and tennis teams reached the NCAA quarterfinals and round of 16, 18

respectively—the best NCAA finishes in both programs’ history. Women’s basketball also appeared in the top 25 and played in the NCAA Tournament all four years with Harlan as the AD. Women’s soccer won its first conference title in 2017 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times, while the baseball team returned to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years in 2015. They both earned top-25 rankings, as did softball, men’s soccer and sailing.

In the classroom, USF student-athletes set school marks for combined grade-point average and Graduation Success Rate (GSR). In the fall of 2017, USF opened the Fishman Family Student-Athlete Enrichment Center, a $750,000 facility dedicated to academic achievement and student-athlete welfare.

Under Harlan’s guidance, USF Athletics saw a 300-percent increase in major giving and had the best fundraising year in school history in 2016-17, attracting $15 million. His announcement of plans for a new $40-million on-campus football center was soon followed by an $8 million gift to athletics—the largest in program history.

Harlan also negotiated a 10-year multimedia rights partnership with Tampa Bay Entertainment Properties, struck an eight-year partnership with adidas as the official footwear, apparel and accessory brand of the Bulls and oversaw a restructure of the school’s athletic brand.

He has been named to several influential committees and is currently serving on the NCAA Division I Council Transfer Working Group and the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee. He chaired the American Athletic Conference Athletic Directors Committee in 2017-18, and as the vice chair in 2016, played a key role in developing the conference’s strategic plan. As a former member of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission Executive Committee, Harlan assisted in bringing major events such as the CFP National Championship, NCAA Women’s Final Four and NHL AllStar game to Tampa Bay.

Harlan came to USF after serving as the senior associate athletics director for external relations at

UCLA from 2010-14, where his oversight responsibilities included the men’s basketball program, development, communications, marketing, ticket sales, sponsorships, multimedia rights and alumni affairs.

While at UCLA, Harlan reorganized the structure of the major giving program and the annual fund, which resulted in a record number of donors and dollars raised in 2013. He successfully managed completion of a $137 million campaign to renovate iconic Pauley Pavilion in 2012. Harlan was also heavily involved in the negotiations with the City of Pasadena to enable a $200 million renovation of the Rose Bowl Stadium.

Harlan left for UCLA after four years as the senior vice president for central development at the University of Arizona Foundation from 2006-10. Under Harlan’s direction, the Foundation posted two record years in funds raised and in the number of gifts processed on behalf of the university. He moved into central development at Arizona after over a decade working in the Wildcat athletic department. He held a variety of roles in athletics, serving as the assistant coordinator for football recruiting and operations (1992-94), program coordinator for event management (1994-97), director of operations (1997-2000), director of annual development (2000-02) and assistant athletics director for development and marketing (2002-04).

Harlan’s background also includes one-year stints as senior associate athletics director for external operations at San Jose State (2005-06) and associate athletics director for external operations at Northern Colorado (2004-05). At SJSU, he launched a planned giving program that generated $8 million in estate gifts directed toward student-athlete scholarship endowments. At Northern Colorado, he played a key role in the school’s transition to NCAA Division I and the Big Sky Conference.

Harlan, 48, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in education from Arizona.

He and his wife Carolyn have two children: Savannah (13) and Austin (10).

HEAD COACH – 8TH SEASON Larry Krystkowiak is in his eighth season as Utah’s head coach and has led the Runnin’ Utes to five consecutive postseason appearances, which includes a NIT championship final run in 2017-18.

Krystkowiak has tallied more than 135 wins over the course of his first seven seasons in Salt Lake City, and to label his rebuilding of the program anything but successful, would be an understatement.

In his now seven seasons as head coach, Krystkowiak has accumulated 138 victories, which includes five consecutive 20-win seasons, a pair of NCAA Tournament berths, and three NIT appearances.

Under Krystkowiak’s leadership, Utah became the only school in the Pac-12 to have a player selected in the first round of the NBA Draft from 2015-17. Along with Delon Wright (2015, No. 20) and Jakob Poeltl (2016, No. 9), Kyle Kuzma went No. 27 overall to the New Jersey Nets in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Kuzma was later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Utes still managed to secure a firstround pick in three straight seasons for the first time since 1997-99 when Keith Van Horn went second overall in 1997, followed by the selections of Michael Doleac (1998) and Andre Miller (1999).

The Utes exceeded all expectations in 2017-18, going 23-12 overall and finishing third in the Pac-12 Conference. The Utes were picked to finish seventh in the Pac-12 standings, but opened league-play with consecutive road wins at Oregon and Oregon State, on the way to an 11-7 mark and the No. 3 seed in the Pac-12 Championship Tournament.

Krystkowiak and made a deep run in the tournament, advancing to the championship final in New York.

Utah would fall to Penn State in the championship game, but along the way Utah won four contests in the tournament, including a pair of home wins and a road victory at a then top-25-ranked Saint Mary’s team. The Utes would then go on to win its NIT Final Four semifinal contest over Western Kentucky before facing PSU in the final.

During the 2016-17 campaign, Krystkowiak led the team to a 20-12 overall record, which included going 11-7 in Pac-12 play and finishing in sole possession of fourth-place in the conference standings.

Krystkowiak helped guide Utah to a 27-9 overall record in 2015-16, which also led to his being named the US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District VIII Coach of the Year.

The 2015-16 regular season concluded with Poeltl, a sophomore, earning Pac-12 Player of the Year

honors – the program’s first POY since 2009 – and senior Brandon Taylor earning the program’s first-ever Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Poeltl would go on to be named the program’s second-consecutive consensus all-American under Krystkowiak, while also taking home the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year awards.

Krystkowiak led the Utes to a 26-9 record, a berth in the Sweet 16 and a No. 15 final national ranking in 2014-15. Utah was ranked in the top 25 for 19 weeks – the most time spent in the national polls since the Final Four campaign of 1997-98. Utah also had its best finish since joining the Pac-12, placing third with a 13-5 conference mark and reaching the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament for the second time in three years.

The Utes defeated Stephen F. Austin and Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual national champion Duke in the Sweet 16, 63-57.

LARRY KRYSTKOWIAK

Individually, Wright won the Bob Cousy Award and was a Wooden All-American selection under Krystkowiak. The senior guard was also named a second team All-American by the USBWA and the NABC. Wright, along with junior guard, Taylor, and freshman center, Poeltl garnered Pac-12 postseason honors.

In 2013-14, Krystkowiak guided the Utes to their first postseason appearance since 2009 and surpassed the 20-win mark.

Wright, in his first season under Krystkowiak’s tutelage, went on to earn First Team All-Pac-12 and All-Defensive Team honors, a precedent for Utah men’s basketball in the Conference of Champions. Jordan Loveridge continued his development and finished among the top-12 in the league in scoring and rebounding and was Utah’s first Pac-12 Player of the Week.

In 2012-13, Krystkowiak led Utah to the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history and won two postseason games for the first time since winning the Mountain West Conference championship in 2009. The Utes also more than doubled their win total from the previous season by winning 15 games.

Krystkowiak was introduced on April 4, 2011 as the new men’s basketball coach at the University of Utah and the man to lead the Runnin’ Utes into the next phase of their storied history. Krystkowiak, who has prior head coaching experience in the NCAA, CBA and NBA, left a position as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets to become the 15th head coach in Utah men’s basketball history.

In his previous collegiate head coaching post, Krystkowiak led his alma mater, the University of Montana, to a 42-20 record and two NCAA appearances as the Grizzlies’ from 2004-06 before joining the NBA coaching ranks.

Krystkowiak spent two seasons as the head coach at Montana. The Grizzlies were Big Sky champions in 2004-05, winning the conference tournament and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They appeared in the Big Dance in 2006 as well, earning an at-large bid and advancing to the second round with an upset victory over fifth-seed Nevada. It was UM’s first NCAA tournament win since 1975.

The only three-time Big Sky MVP in league history and two-time Academic All-American for Montana from 1982-86, Krystkowiak is still the school’s all-time career leader in points (2,017) and rebounds (1,105). He was selected in the second round (28th overall pick) of the 1986 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls and played in the league for nine years with San Antonio (1986-87), Milwaukee (198892), Utah (1992-93), Orlando (1993-94), Chicago (1994-96) and the Los Angeles Lakers (1996). TOMMY CONNOR Associate Head Coach

Tommy Connor is in his eighth year as a Utah assistant coach under head coach Larry Krystkowiak.

During the summer of 2014, Connor was elevated to the title of associate head coach.

This is Connor’s second stint with the Utes, following four years as an assistant under the late Rick Majerus from 1994-97. Connor, a former Utah player (1986-88, 1990), returned to his alma mater after a very successful 12-year stint as the head coach at Westminster College (NAIA).

Connor was a four-year starter for the Runnin’ Utes at point guard. After graduating with a B.S. in exercise and sport science, he spent three years as a graduate assistant and another four years as an assistant coach at Utah under Majerus. During his time on the bench, Connor helped guide Utah to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight as well as the NIT “Final Four”, while capturing four Western Athletic Conference championships.

In a stellar 12-year career at Westminster, Connor led the Griffins to a 264-114 (.698) overall record, while proving even more dominant in Frontier Conference play with a 126-40 (.759) mark.

Those numbers become more impressive when considering that Connor built the program from scratch after it was reinstated prior to the 1999-2000 season.

Under Connor, Westminster posted 10 seasons with at least 20 wins, including nine straight from 20022011. The Griffins won seven regular-season Frontier Conference championships and two conference tournament titles. Connor was a five-time Frontier Conference Coach of the Year and his teams qualified for nine NAIA National Championship appearances.

Connor coached 17 players to NAIA All-American status and had one NAIA National Player of the Year.

The Griffins also had five players named Frontier Conference Player of the Year and saw 36 players earn all-conference honors. Westminster was also successful

ANDY HILL

DEMARLO SLOCUM Assistant Coach

DeMarlo Slocum is now in his eighth year as an assistant coach with the Utes following a four-year stint in the same position at Colorado State.

In his now 12 seasons overall at both Utah and CSU, Slocum has worked primarily with the guards and shared recruiting responsibilities. Before coming to Colorado State, Slocum served as an assistant coach at the University of Idaho for one year.

Prior to joining the Idaho Vandals, Slocum was the head coach of the Las Vegas Prospects AAU team for five years. During his tenure, the Prospects were ranked among the top five AAU teams on the west coast. Slocum has worked at various collegiate basketball development camps across America, as well as the West Coast All-Star Camp and the Adidas Superstar Camp.

Slocum, a native of Las Vegas, also served one season as an assistant coach at Dixie State College before moving on to the University of Southern California to become the Trojans’ Director of Basketball Operations. In one season with USC, Slocum was in charge of on-campus recruiting, team travel, scouting and camp coordination.

As a student-athlete, Slocum spent two years at Dixie State before playing his final two seasons at Georgia Southern, where he earned a degree in public recreation/kinesiology in 2001. During his junior season at Georgia Southern, he was the team’s second-

Andy Hill is in his eighth year as an assistant coach with the Utes. He came to Utah from Montana, where he spent seven years in the same role, including two seasons under current Runnin’ Ute Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak.

In his seven seasons at Montana, Hill helped the Grizzlies to three NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2010, as well as a CBI bid in 2011. Montana also reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament championship game in four of his seven seasons. In Hill’s two years under Krystkowiak from 2004-06, Montana went 42-20 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth both years, advancing to the second round in 2006.

Among Hill’s duties at Montana were assisting with scheduling of games, coordinating camps, oncourt coaching and recruiting. Additionally, he was instrumental in coordinating the annual coaching clinics and worked closely with the fund-raising efforts of UM’s Roundball Club.

Hill served as a graduate assistant coach during the 2003-04 season at Eastern Washington, which won the Big Sky Conference that year. While at EWU, Hill was involved in the promotion of the Eagles’ camps and assisted in recruiting as well.

During the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, Hill served as an assistant at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. In his two seasons, the Warriors advanced to consecutive NAIA National Tournaments.

He was also an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., during the 2000-01 season.

Hill graduated from Eastern Washington in 2000 with a degree in education. He has one son, Garrett.

BASKETBALL SUPPORT STAFF CHRIS JONES Director of Operations Chris Jones is in his third season as the Utah’s director of operations. A familiar face to the program, Jones previously served as the video coordinator for the Runnin’ Utes from 1995-97. He later served as the director of ops from 2005-06 before making the move to the bench as an assistant coach from 2006-08.

During his first stint at Utah, Jones was a part of teams that went to the NCAA second round in 1995, the Sweet 16 in ‘96 and the Elite Eight in ‘97. During that time, Utah had an 84-17 overall record and won three WAC regular-season championships. Jones helped develop All-Americans Keith Van Horn, Andre Miller and Michael Doleac.

Before his recent return to the U., Jones spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Utah State, where his primary duties included coaching the guards, as well as in-state recruiting.

He was also in charge of a USU defense that led the Western Athletic Conference in points allowed four times in five years.

Jones began his coaching career in London as the head coach of Wurthing Bears from 1998-99 before spending three years as an instructor at Champions Athletic Academy. He then returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Westminster College from 2003-04 before making his way to the U.

Jones played collegiately at Utah for two season (1993-94). He graduated from Utah in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

With the Nets, McByrne was an assistant video coordinator under head coach Avery Johnson from 2010-11 and an intern under previous head coach Lawrence Frank, from 2009-10.

During the 2010-11 season McByrne also worked alongside current Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak, who was then an assistant coach with New Jersey. Other notable coaches McByrne has worked with include Popeye Jones, Del Harris, John Loyer, Sam Mitchell and Kiki Vandeweghe.

McByrne is originally from Newtown, Pennsylvania, where he attended Council Rock High School South and was captain of the basketball team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Tampa in 2008.

McByrne married the former Carly Xaiz in the summer of 2017. The couple have a daughter, Emma.

TREVOR JAMESON Director of Sports Medicine Trevor Jameson is in his 20th year as an athletic trainer with the University of Utah. In 2008, he also accepted the position of Director

of Sports Medicine. His primary responsibility is working with the Runnin’ Ute basketball team.

Before coming to Utah, Jameson spent four years as an assistant athletic trainer and instructor at DePauw University in Indiana. In addition to working with DePauw athletes, Jameson assisted in the development of the department’s CAAHEP accredited athletic training education program and provided clinical instruction for students.

Prior to his appointment at DePauw, Jameson worked as a graduate assistant trainer at Indiana State University. Jameson received his master’s degree in athletic training from Indiana State in August of 1996 and earned the Outstanding Professional Award for his graduating class.

Jameson received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and athletic training from Brigham Young University in 1995. He worked in the Cougar sports medicine department for over two years.

A Utah native, Jameson graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1987.

He and his wife, Angie, have five children: Tui, Moevanu, Malia, Tavita and Masina.

graduated from the U. in the summer of 2018, was a student manager for the team the past three seasons. He is responsible for assisting the coaching staff with a multitude of strategic and statistical categories. He resides in Salt Lake City.

CHARLES STEPHENSON Director of Men’s Basketball Sports Performance Charles Stephenson, who became the first basketballspecific strength coach in the program’s history, enters his seventh season with the Runnin’ Ute program.

Stephenson brought with him nearly 25 years of experience as a strength coach at the collegiate level.

Most recently, he was the strength coach for men’s basketball at North Carolina State from 1996-2011 and previously held the same position at Auburn from 1994-96. Prior to Auburn, he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Virginia from 1987-94.

Stephenson earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from UVA in 1989 and did his undergraduate work at the College of William & Mary, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

Stephenson and his wife, Diane, have four children, Tyler, Shea, Quinn and Carsyn.

After the Utes beat the defending national champion Olympic Club of San Francisco by 20 points on March 1 in Salt Lake City, a groundswell of support raised enough money to send the team to Chicago in search of a national title. The Utes defeated the Olympic Club again in the semifinals and took down the Illinois Athletic Club, 28-27, for its first national title and an 11-0 season.

Utah took down defending national champion Arizona, 76-51, in the West Regional final and No. 1-ranked North Carolina, 65-59, in the national semifinals at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

The Runnin’ Utes fell to Kentucky in the title game as a deep Wildcat team overcame a double-digit second half deficit. Utah, led by head coach Rick Majerus and All-Americans Andre Miller and Michael Doleac, tied the school record with 30 wins.

NCAA TOURNAMENT SUCCESS NCAA Champions – 1944

The Utes were invited to both the NIT and the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 1944 season, but chose the former. At the time, the NIT was a much better tournament financially. After Utah lost to Kentucky in the NIT first round, head coach Vadal Peterson received a phone call from the NCAA asking them to participate in their tournament as a late fill-in for Arkansas, which was involved in an automobile accident. The Utes quickly accepted and headed to Kansas City, where they beat Missouri and Iowa State to advance to the championship game back in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Utah defeated Dartmouth, 42-40 in overtime to win the title. A few days later in a Red Cross Benefit game, Utah defeated NIT champion St. John’s, 43-36.

The Utes won the three games in the tournament by a total of seven points and took down Kentucky, 49-45, in the championship game. The starters from the 1947 NIT title team were (left to right) Wat Misaka, Fred Weidner, Arnie Ferrin, Vern Gardner and Leon Watson. Ferrin, Misaka and Dick Smuin were veterans of the ’44 NCAA Championship run but center Vern Gardner garnered tournament MVP honors. Fred Weidner also played a major part in the championship.

Delon Wright Toronto Raptors Delon Wright is in his fourth year with the Toronto Raptors, who took him in the first round of the 2015 draft.

With Delon Wright (2015), Jakob Poeltl (2016) and Kyle Kuzma (2017) being taken in the first round in the NBA Draft in successive years, Utah was the only school in the Pac-12 to have had at least one player taken in the first round of the draft in three consecutive years from 2015-17. The Utes were on hand for the U.’s Employee Appreciation Day last fall.

Ute players participated in the annual Fan Fest event last August at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Utah basketball team makes dozens of public appearances each year and gives back to the Salt Lake City community in numerous ways.

The Runnin’ Utes have taken part in Utah Athletics’ Fan Fest, the U.’s Employee Appreciation Day, University of Utah Healthcare’s cancer awareness event, the Huntsman Cancer Institute 5K, Fan

Appreciation Night at the Utah Red Zone campus store, the Utah Food Bank’s Holiday Food Drive, Christmas gift deliveries with the Utah Foster Care Foundation, visiting the VA Hospital, delivering season tickets to Ute fans, helping U. students move into the dorms, delivering sandwiches and water to the homeless in Salt Lake City, and partnering with Team IMPACT.

The Runnin’ Utes took part in the Huntsman Cancer Institute 5K last June. The annual event supports cancer research taking place at the NCIdesignated cancer research facility and hospital located on the U. campus, founded by Utah industrialist and philanthropist Jon M. Huntsman Sr. Jon, his wife Karen, and the Huntsman family have been passionate supporters of the University of Utah, the athletics department and the men’s basketball program. The Runnin’ Utes added a patch to their uniform honoring Huntsman after he passed away in February 2018.

The Pac-12 has sent at least half of its teams on to postseason play 27 times in the last 29 years. During that time, 13 league players have garnered National Player of the Year or National Freshman of the Year honors.

PAC-12 CONFERENCE

Built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance, the Pac-12 Conference renewed its undisputed claim as the “Conference of Champions” in 2017-18. Beyond the courts and fields, the Pac-12’s accomplishments extend into the classrooms across 12 campuses, and outside its traditional geographic footprint into new corners around the world.

Spanning over a century of outstanding athletics achievements, the Pac-12 has claimed 513 NCAA Championships (300 men’s, 183 women’s, 30 combined), over 200 more than the next closest league. The Pac-12’s success is as evident in men’s basketball as any sport, where league teams have captured a record 16 NCAA Championships. The Pac-12 also lays claim to 39 NCAA Final Four appearances, 94 consensus first-team All-Americans and 17 National

Utah has had five All-Pac-12 first team selections over the last five seasons. Delon Wright started the run in 2014 and ’15, followed by Jakob Poeltl in 2016, Kyle Kuzma in 2017 and Justin Bibbins in 2018. Poeltl was named 2015-16 Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year and Brandon Taylor was tabbed the league’s 2015-16 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

CLASSROOM CHAMPIONS

For everything the Runnin’ Utes have achieved on the court, they have been equally successful in the classroom. In Larry Krystkowiak’s program, the focus is on developing well-rounded student-athletes. Utah posted the third-highest multi-year APR score in the Pac-12 of 985 in 2016-17. The graduation success rate

of Utah basketball players within six years from the time they enrolled as freshmen is 100 percent.

Utah ranked tied for second among league schools with two players on the Academic AllPac-12 first or second teams in 2017-18. Parker Van Dyke and Jayce Johnson were both named second-team selections and David Collette earned honorable mention.

Over the last six years, Utah has placed 13 players on either the Pac-12 All-Academic first or second teams, and seven others have earned honorable mention. Brandon Taylor and Jeremey Olsen were both three-time Pac-12 All-Academic first-team selections.

Utah lacrosse ready for inaugural season.

The Utah lacrosse team completes a two-year process transitioning from a club sport to an NCAA sport with its inaugural season in 2019.

Leading the Utes is veteran coach Brian Holman, who in his first head coaching job. Holman has previously won NCAA titles with lacrosse powers Johns Hopkins and North Carolina as an assistant coach.

Joining him as assistant coaches are all-star players Adam Ghitelman, Marcus Holman and Will Manny.

The team is young, with 37 underclassmen— including 33 freshmen—on a 44-man roster. Five players transferred from four-year schools while 19 players were members of last year’s club team.

“I want to see us compete,” Holman said of what he’s looking for from the Utes in their first Division I season. “We’re going to be in situations where we’re going to be outmatched. Can we still maintain our competitive edge in those situations? Are we going to be tough enough to fight through it? Do we fall back on our training and find a way out of it, or do we panic and show our immaturity? That’s going to be our biggest challenge.

“We want to get every person on this roster a little bit better every day, and do it together,” Holman

continued. “That’s what’s going to allow us to win games. If we’re doing that, and we can do that, it starts snowballing, rolling down the hill and gathering up a lot of energy, and the sky’s the limit. I think these guys are ready. I have a lot of faith in this group right now.

They’ve proven to me that we’re all in.”

The Utes finished their club campaign on a high note, winning the 2018 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference Championship and reaching the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association quarterfinals.

Utah hosts Vermont on Friday, Feb. 1, in its first game, in Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Utes have six home games, including Mercer (Feb. 9), Bellarmine (March 9), Mount St. Mary’s (April 6), Cleveland State (April 20) and Detroit Mercy (April 27). Utah faces four teams that are ranked in the U.S. Lacrosse Magazine preseason poll: No. 2 Duke (March 12), No. 5 Virginia (March 31), No. 9 Denver (Feb. 23) and No. 16 Massachusetts (March 17).

Attack

Junior transfer Jimmy Perkins brings NCAA experience to the Utes after spending four seasons at

Robert Morris. The second-team All-Northeast Conference player led the Colonials with 61 points and a school-record 30 assists and finished second on the team with 31 goals. Junior James Sexton was a twotime All-American at Onondaga Community College, leading the nation in assists in 2018 (49) while ranking third nationally in points (83) and finishing third on the team in goals (34).

Sophomore brothers Josh Stout and Jake Stout were both two-time MCLA All-Americans for the club program. Josh, who will also play in the midfield, led Utah last season with 63 goals, 23 assists and 86 points. Jake scored 46 goals with 16 assists over 28 career club games.

Freshman Jake Cantlon from Canada has been among the top players in the British Columbia Junior Lacrosse League.

Midfield/LSM

At long stick midfielder, freshman Chris Belcher earned All-America honors with the club program last season and finished second on the team with 53 ground balls. The Lehi, Utah, product was a two-time high school All-American. Freshman Rylan Lemons earned all-conference honors with the club team last year, recording 13 ground balls. Freshman Carter McDaniels was two-time All-Puget Sound at Tahoma High School (Wash.). Freshman Bo Caldwell earned high school All-America honors at Juan Diego High School and was the state’s 2018 LSM MVP. Junior Aaron Fjeldsted earned All-America honors with the club team last season. LACROSSE SEASON PREVIEW America honors with the club team last season and has 73 ground balls over the last two years. Senior Aidan Christian, a transfer from Bellarmine who was an all-conference player for the club team last year, had 23 ground balls last season.

Freshmen Nick Hapney and Samuel Cambere are expected to make a strong impact. Hapney played at the St. Paul’s School for Boys (Md.) while Cambere earned all-state honors at Flower Mound High School (Texas) last season.

Redmond is the only player who spent more than two seasons with the club team, playing in 50 games over four years. He had 64 career ground balls, 34 goals and 27 assists for the Utes. Freshman Reid Lanigan had 10 goals and eight assists with six ground balls last season while freshman Liam CavanaughFernandez scored 11 goals with seven assists and nine ground balls in 2018.

He was an All-American in high school who played five varsity seasons. Senior Daniel Costa was a second-team All-American for Utah’s club squad last year after transferring from St. John’s, where he ranked second in the Big East and 25th in the NCAA in saves per game (10.79) in 2017.

Faceoff Freshman Jacob Chang played in 14 club games last season and was 34-of-53 in faceoffs with 23 ground balls. Freshman Donny Stock was two-time all-state at St. Xavier HS (Ohio).
