MEET NOTES Tonight The No. 4 ranked Utah gymnasts (4-0, 2-0 Pac-12) compete at home for just the second time this season, hosting No. 23 Arizona (3-3, 1-1 Pac-12) in Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at 7 p.m. In the Rankings Utah is No. 4 for the third straight week in the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) rankings, which are based on total season average. The Utes are No. 2 in the nation on vault—where they have four gymnasts ranked in the top 25—No. 3 on floor, No. 5 on beam and No. 6 on bars. MyKayla Skinner is No. 2 in the all-around and on vault, No. 4 (tie) on bars and No. 8 (tie) on floor). MaKenna Merrell-Giles is No. 8 (tie) on vault and No. 10 (tie) on floor. Macey Roberts is tied for No. 16 on vault, Kari Lee is tied for No. 21 on vault and Cristal Isa and Missy Reinstadtler are tied for No. 21 on bars. Utah teams have started a season with a 197 three previous times (2004, 2005, 2018), but had never put together back-to-back 197’s to start a season prior to this year … The Utes are competing at home for the first time since the season opener back on Jan. 5 … Utah went 3-0 on the road with wins over BYU, Oregon State and Arizona State … Junior MyKayla Skinner has 91 career victories, which ranks fourth in school history … Individual winners are Skinner (14), MaKenna Merrell-Giles (2), Cristal Isa (1), Kari Lee (1), Adrienne Randall (1) and Missy Reinstadtler (1) … The Utes have hit 92-of-96 routines … Gymnasts who have hit every routine without a fall are Skinner
(16-16), Lee (12-12), Macey Roberts (8-8), Isa (7-7), Randall (6-6), Sydney Soloski (4-4), Hunter Dula (3-3) and Shannon McNatt (3-3). Ute Insider Missy Reinstadtler has been limited in her training due to a sore foot and competed only on bars at ASU last weekend, tying for first with a career-high 9.95 … MyKayla Skinner has been named the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week twice this season (Jan. 8 and Jan. 23). Cristal Isa was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Jan. 8. This week’s honors were not released before press time … Sydney Soloski tied her career high on floor (9.925) at Arizona State. Utah Co-Coaches Megan Marsden and Tom Farden are in their fourth season as a co-head coaching tandem. It is Marsden’s 10th year as Utah’s co-head coach and her 35th year overall on the staff . Farden is in his fourth year as the co-head coach and his ninth year on the Ute coaching staff. Marsden, the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015 (with Greg Marsden), has a 205-72-3 career record as a co-coach. Farden is 73-25-1 at the Ute helm and has a career record of 144-73-1 that includes six years as the head coach at Southeast Missouri State from 2004-09. Nation’s Attendance Leader Utah’s crowd of 13,193 against Penn State in its only home meet of 2019 is the largest in the country this season. Utah’s 2019 season ticket count of 9,830 set a new NCAA gymnastics record, breaking last year’s mark (also held by Utah) of 9,236. Utah has led all women’s sports in season home attendance eight times (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018). The Utes have won 34 women’s gymnastics attendance titles. The Utes hold the NCAA gymnastics record for season attendance average (15,244 in 2017) and singlemeet attendance (16,019 against Michigan in 2015). Utah has averaged more than 14,000 fans to its home meets for the past 10 seasons and 12,000-plus fans a meet for a quarter of a century. The Huntsman Center has hosted one crowd in excess of 16,000, 24 crowds of 15,000 and 48 crowds of 14,000 or more. The Utes have sold more than 9,400 season tickets for the 2019 season—a new school and NCAA gymnastics record.

ormer NCAA all-around champion Megan Marsden is in her 35th year on the Utah coaching staff and her 10th as the co-head coach. As a gymnast or coach, Marsden has participated in all of Utah’s record-tying 10 national championships and 38 of its record 43 national championship appearances. Since becoming the co-head coach in 2010, she has compiled a 201-72-3 overall record and has twice been named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2014, 2015). She is also a two-time NCAA Region Head Coach of the Year (2011, 2012). Marsden began coaching at her alma mater in 1985 after leading Utah to four national championships as a 12-time first-team All-American and three-time NCAA champion from 1981-84. She spent 25 years as an assistant or associate coach. She and husband Greg have two sons, Montana and Dakota. Greg coached the Ute gymnastics team for 40 years before retiring after the 2015 NCAA Championships.

n three seasons as Utah’s co-head coach, preceded by five years as an assistant, Tom Farden has played a crucial role in the program’s eight NCAA Championship appearances, five Super Six finishes and three Pac-12 Championships since 2011. Farden has a 69-25-1 record at Utah and his career head coaching record of 140-73-1 includes a 71-48 mark in six seasons at Southeast Missouri State. Utah’s lead recruiter throughout his tenure, Farden has coached three NCAA individual champions (Georgia Dabritz on bars and MyKayla Skinner on floor and vault), 14 NCAA Regional champions, 13 Pac-12 titlists and the recipients of 66 All-America awards. Skinner was the 2017 and 2018 NCAA all-around runner-up. Utah has qualified into the NCAA Championships all three seasons Farden as its co-head coach—making the Super Six and placing fifth in the nation the past two years. He and his wife Christina have a son, Ki.

Robert Ladanyi Assistant Coach 2nd Year
obert Ladanyi, a 13-year veteran of NCAA women’s gymnastics coaching and former coach of the Romanian Junior National Team, is in his second year at Utah. As the Utes’ primary vault and floor coach, Ladanyi (pronounced lad-an-knee) produced an NCAA champion, two regional winners and two Pac-12 titlists 2018. MyKayla Skinner became Utah’s first NCAA vault champion since 1992, giving Ladanyi his fourth NCAA champion. Ladanyi spent 10 years as an assistant coach at Florida from 2006-15, followed by two years as an assistant at Denver (2016-17). He assisted in three NCAA team championships at Florida from 2013-15. The three-time Southeast Region Co-Assistant Coach of the Year (2011, 2013 and 2015) has coached 52 All-Americans. As an assistant coach at Denver, he helped the Pioneers achieve their best finish ever at the 2017 NCAA Championships (ninth). The Baia Mare, Romania native has two daughters: Gabby and Laila.

J Das, an acclaimed professional choreographer and dancer based in Los Angeles, is in her first year as a volunteer coach/choreographer for the Utah gymnastics team. Das brings a unique style to Utah’s routines, drawing from her professional portfolio of choreography for the Emmy Awards, GLOW (Netflix), Apple Music, and numerous commercials. Her extensive list of dance credits includes the Ellen Show, the Oscars, and a number of Disney and Nickelodeon shows. Das has also danced on stage and in an extensive list of music videos. A Seattle native, Das (pronounced dah-s) was a Level 10 gymnast who went on to compete collegiately at Washington, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

ormer Canadian National team member and two-sport NCAA All-American Carly Dockendorf is in her first season as Utah’s director of recruiting and player development. She joined the staff last year as a volunteer assistant coach and choreographer. Dockendorf, whose background includes a decade of college coaching, has previous experience as a recruiting coordinator, serving in the same role with the Seattle Pacific gymnastics team from 2013-17. She spent six years at Seattle Pacific as an assistant gymnastics coach (2009, 201317) and three years as SPU’s assistant track and field coach (2010-12). She also coached at Falcon Gymnastics Center from 2012-17 before joining the Ute staff as a volunteer assistant coach. The Port Moody, B.C., native is married to Henry Ruggiero. They have two daughters: Crosby and Hayden.

ennifer White is in her third year as the gymnastics chief of staff/ new media director. White manages the Utah gymnastics social media accounts, public relations and team travel. She is also involved with gymnastics ticket sales and revenue. White stepped into her current role after eight years with the Ute marketing staff—four as the director. She graduated from Weber State in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and earned a master’s in education/sport management from Georgia in 2007. She is married to Aaron White and they have a son Kingston.

K
atie Lorens is in her eighth year as the athletic trainer for the Utah gymnastics team. She also serves on the Utah Athletics wellness committee. Prior to her time at Utah, Lorens worked as the athletic trainer for the University of California-Berkeley football and men’s and women’s gymnastics teams. The Chicago native completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in kinesiology with an emphasis in athletic training. Lorens earned her master’s degree at Illinois State University in biomechanics/athletic training. She is married to Benjamin Naugle.

T
he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue. The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007. Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ‘82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 14 NCAA regional championships and two Pac-12 Championships. Utah has led the nation in gymnastics attendance 34 of the last 37 years and has won eight all-women’s sports attendance titles, including the last six in a row. The Utes have averaged nearly 12,000 fans a meet since 1990 and over 14,500 a meet since 2010. Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-the-art sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse. New videoboards were installed in the fall of 2017 at a cost of $4.1 million.
Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81), including the 1979 Final Four starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
