MEET NOTES Tonight The Pac-12’s top two teams square off in the Huntsman Center as No. 5 Utah (7-1, 2-1 Pac-12) hosts No. 4 UCLA (4-1, 3-0 Pac-12) in the “RedOut” meet, televised live nationally on ESPNU. In the Rankings With a 196.879 season average, Utah dropped one place to No. 5 in the national rankings after last week’s loss by .025 at No. 11 Oregon State. Utah is ranked No. 4 on beam (49.300 season average), No. 4 on floor (49.263), No. 5 on vault (49.225) and No. 9 on bars (49.092). MyKayla Skinner is ranked No. 2 in the all-around (39.583), No. 5 on floor (9.933), No. 7 on vault (9.908), No. 8 on beam (9.883) and No. 22 on bars (9.858). Skinner is the top-ranked Pac-12 gymnast in the all-around and on floor. Baely Rowe is No. 7 in the nation on beam (9.888) and No. 19 in the all-around (39.337). MaKenna Merrell is ranked No. 22 on vault (9.865).

Fan Fun Tonight’s meet is a “RedOut” with fans encouraged to wear red. Utah and UCLA have combined to win four of the five Pac-12 Championships to date, with Utah winning in 2014 and 2015 and UCLA capturing the title in 2012 and 2016. Utah has qualified for a record 41-straight national championships with 10 national titles (nine NCAA), while UCLA has made the championships 34 times and has six NCAA titles.

Quick Sticks Tonight’s meet on ESPNU marks the first time the ESPN family has televised a Utah home gymnastics meet.

The talent crew assigned to the meet includes former Olympians Bart Conner (play by play) and Kathy Johnson Clarke (color analyst), Utah alum Holly Rowe (reporter) and Laura Rutledge (reporter) … Utah’s MyKayla Skinner and UCLA’s Madison

Kocian were both members of the 2016 U.S. Olympic team (Skinner as an alternate). Kocian won the silver medal on bars in Rio … Utah is averaging 15,035 fans a meet, including a season-high 15,326 vs. Cal on Feb. 4 … This week’s national rankings mark the last time of the season that season average will be used to determine a team and individual’s rank. Starting Feb. 20, the rankings will be based on regional qualifying score. The RQS takes the six best scores—three which must be road scores—dropping the high and averaging the remaining five scores.

Chalk Talk Freshman MyKayla Skinner is undefeated in the all-around and on vault and has 23 total wins (of 30 possible individual titles) ... Ute Insider Look for sophomore All-American Kari Lee to return to the vault lineup this Saturday after a two-week break from competition vaulting … MaKenna Merrell has put together back-to-back career highs on beam since moving from leadoff to No. 2 in the lineup. She scored a 9.875 against both Cal and OSU … Utah has lost two starters to season ending injuries: Sophomore All-American and 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Sabrina Schwab (knee) and freshman Kim Tessen (ankle). Schwab was competing in the all-around, while Tesson was a two to three event starter.

Co-Head Coach 8th/33rd Year

F

ormer NCAA all-around champion Megan Marsden is in her 33rd year on the Utah coaching staff and her eighth as the co-head coach. As a gymnast or coach, Marsden has participated in all of Utah’s record-tying 10 national championships and 36 of its record 41 national championship appearances.

Since becoming the co-head coach in 2010, she has compiled a 151-54-3 overall record and has twice been named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2014, 2015). She is also a two-time NCAA Region Head Coach of the Year (2011, 2012).

Marsden began coaching at her alma mater in 1985 after leading Utah to four national championships as a 12-time first-team AllAmerican and three-time NCAA champion from 1981-84. She spent 25 years as an assistant or associate coach.

She and husband Greg have two sons, Montana and Dakota. Greg coached the Ute gymnastics team for 40 years before retiring after the 2015 NCAA Championships.

Co-Head Coach 2nd/7th Year

I

n six years at Utah—including last season as the co-head coach—Tom Farden has been a vital cog in the program’s six NCAA Championship appearances, 2015 NCAA runner-up finish and two Pac-12 championships. Farden, who owns a 19-7-1 record in one season as Utah’s co-head coach, has a career record of 90-55-1 that includes six years at Southeast Missouri State.

In addition to his coaching duties, Farden oversees Utah’s recruiting and training. Utah’s bar coach his entire career at the school, he also assists on the other events. As an assistant or head Utah coach, Farden is credited for contributing to 35 All-America performances, nine individual regional championships and 10 individual Pac-12 titles. The program has also performed well in the classroom. Utah has placed in the top five in the country in gymnastics team GPA for the past five years, including first place in 2014 and second place in 2015 and 2016.

He and his wife Christina have a son, Ki.

Meredith Paulicivic Assistant Coach 2nd Year

n her second year as Utah’s assistant coach, former Ute All-American Meredith Paulicivic (pronounced paul-a-civic) has already begun putting her stamp on the program. Her background as a high-level choreographer has brought a new look to Utah’s floor routines.

This season, in addition to her responsibilities designing and coaching the choreography and dance elements on floor, Paulicivic will serve as Utah’s primary vault coach. She has familiarity with that event at Utah as well, as a former three-time vault AllAmerican. As a gymnast at Utah from 1991-94, the former Meredith King competed for two Utah NCAA Championship teams (1992, 1994) and was a team captain her senior season.

Paulicivic draws from both a club and NCAA coaching background. Her 18 years as an assistant or head coach at SCEGA Gymnastics in Temecula, Calif., were sandwiched between stints at Pac-12 schools California (1996) and Arizona (2015).

She is married to George Paulicivic. They have a son Corbin and daughters Blayne and Avery.

It marked the seventh-straight year that UUHC ranked among the nation’s top 10 academic medical centers in quality, safety and accountability. The U. also ranks No. 36 on the list of Top 50 Best Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy Schools.

BUSINESS SCHOOL

The David Eccles School of Business’ undergraduate program has been rated among the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report in the past three years. The Executive MBA program was ranked 22nd in the nation by Financial Times. The school also has been ranked in the top 25 the past five straight years for entrepreneurship by the Princeton Review.

The U.’s graduate accounting program was rated top 35 in the nation in 2016.

LAW SCHOOL

The S.J. Quinney College of Law, which opened a new building in the fall of 2015, was ranked 16th by both National Jurist and PreLaw Magazine for practical training in 2016.

JON M. HUNTSMAN CENTER

T

he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue.

The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007.

Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ’82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 13 NCAA regional championships (most recently in 2016) and two Pac-12 Championships.

Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-theart sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse.

Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81). Perhaps the most legendary NCAA Tournament game of all time—the 1979 NCAA Championship game starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson—was played in the Huntsman Center.
