MEET NOTES Today Two nationally-ranked unbeaten gymnastics teams will square off in the Huntsman Center when No. 4 Utah (6-0, 1-0 Pac-12) hosts No. 15 California (8-0, 3-0) in a matinee meet starting at 1:30 p.m.

Fan Fun The Ute gymnasts will host their only autograph session of the year after today’s meet, which is billed as “Character Day,” with kids encouraged to come dressed in their favorite costume. Famous characters will roam the concourse and interact with fans before the meet … The first 2,000 kids in attendance will receive their choice of a red Utah gymnastics light saber or white light-up crown …

The free Kids Zone opens at noon and features a face painter, balloon artist, poster making station and more … The first 100 University of Utah students in the doors will receive a free MUSS crewneck sweatshirt.

National Rankings Utah held steady at No. 4 in the national rankings after its second-straight 197-plus score last week at Washington. The Utes are ranked No. 4 on vault (49.238 season average), No. 4 on beam (49.306), No. 4 on floor (49.244) and No. 5 on bars (49.288).

MyKayla Skinner is ranked No. 2 in the all-around (39.625), No. 4 on beam (9.894), No. 4 on floor (9.938), No. 6 on vault (9.912) and No. 12 on bars (9.881). Baely Rowe is No. 2 on beam (9.90), No. 4 in the all-around (39.563) and No. 14 on bars (9.875). MaKenna Merrell is ranked No. 19 on vault (9.875) and Kari Lee is No. 21 on beam (9.862).

Chalk Talk MyKayla Skinner has won all four all-around, vault and floor competitions this season and has 17 total wins of 20 possible individual titles ...

Skinner is a three-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. She is the only Pac-12 gymnast ever to accomplish the dual feat in the same week more than once … Baely Rowe has gone all-around in the last two meets, placing

second to Skinner in both (career-high 39.625 on Jan. 20 and 39.500 on Jan. 28) … Ute individual event/all-around winners: Skinner (17), Rowe (4), MaKenna Merrell (2) and Tiffani Lewis (1) …

The Utes are 92-96 in hit routines (routines without a fall), including 24-24 at Washington … Gymnasts who have hit every routine are Skinner (16-16), Kari Lee (10-10), Sabrina Schwab (8-8), Kim Tessen (7-7), Macey Roberts (5-5) and Maddy Stover (4-4).

Ute Insider Utah has lost two starters to season ending injuries.

Sophomore All-American Sabrina Schwab (the 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of Year) tore her ACL at practice on Jan. 17. Freshman Kim Tessen tore her Achilles in pre-meet floor warm-ups last Saturday at Washington. Schwab was competing in the all-around, while Tessen was a two-three event starter … MaKenna Merrell, who is ranked 19th in the country on vault, could return to the starting vault lineup this week. If so, she will rejoin MyKayla Skinner and Baely Rowe in the all-around lineup.

If not, Erika Muhaw will vault for the second time this season … Maddy Stover could potentially lead off Utah’s beam lineup against Cal, with Merrell moving to the second position. Stover led off the beam team as a freshman in 2015.

Series Shorts The Utes are 17-1 all-time against the Bears with their only loss coming last April in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships. Utah had won both previous meetings in 2016 (at Cal and at the Pac-12 Championships).

Utah Co-Coaches Megan Marsden and Tom Farden are in their second season as a co-head coaching tandem. It is Marsden’s eighth year as Utah’s co-head coach and her 33rd year overall on the staff. Co-Head Coach 8th/33rd Year

F

ormer NCAA all-around champion Megan Marsden is in her 33rd year on the Utah coaching staff and her eighth as the co-head coach. As a gymnast or coach, Marsden has participated in all of Utah’s record-tying 10 national championships and 36 of its record 41 national championship appearances.

Since becoming the co-head coach in 2010, she has compiled a 151-54-3 overall record and has twice been named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2014, 2015). She is also a two-time NCAA Region Head Coach of the Year (2011, 2012).

Marsden began coaching at her alma mater in 1985 after leading Utah to four national championships as a 12-time first-team AllAmerican and three-time NCAA champion from 1981-84. She spent 25 years as an assistant or associate coach.

She and husband Greg have two sons, Montana and Dakota. Greg coached the Ute gymnastics team for 40 years before retiring after the 2015 NCAA Championships.

Co-Head Coach 2nd/7th Year

I

n six years at Utah—including last season as the co-head coach—Tom Farden has been a vital cog in the program’s six NCAA Championship appearances, 2015 NCAA runner-up finish and two Pac-12 championships. Farden, who owns a 19-7-1 record in one season as Utah’s co-head coach, has a career record of 90-55-1 that includes six years at Southeast Missouri State.

In addition to his coaching duties, Farden oversees Utah’s recruiting and training. Utah’s bar coach his entire career at the school, he also assists on the other events. As an assistant or head Utah coach, Farden is credited for contributing to 35 All-America performances, nine individual regional championships and 10 individual Pac-12 titles. The program has also performed well in the classroom. Utah has placed in the top five in the country in gymnastics team GPA for the past five years, including first place in 2014 and second place in 2015 and 2016.

He and his wife Christina have a son, Ki.

Meredith Paulicivic Assistant Coach 2nd Year

n her second year as Utah’s assistant coach, former Ute All-American Meredith Paulicivic (pronounced paul-a-civic) has already begun putting her stamp on the program. Her background as a high-level choreographer has brought a new look to Utah’s floor routines.

This season, in addition to her responsibilities designing and coaching the choreography and dance elements on floor, Paulicivic will serve as Utah’s primary vault coach. She has familiarity with that event at Utah as well, as a former three-time vault AllAmerican. As a gymnast at Utah from 1991-94, the former Meredith King competed for two Utah NCAA Championship teams (1992, 1994) and was a team captain her senior season.

Paulicivic draws from both a club and NCAA coaching background. Her 18 years as an assistant or head coach at SCEGA Gymnastics in Temecula, Calif., were sandwiched between stints at Pac-12 schools California (1996) and Arizona (2015).

She is married to George Paulicivic. They have a son Corbin and daughters Blayne and Avery.

It marked the seventh-straight year that UUHC ranked among the nation’s top 10 academic medical centers in quality, safety and accountability. The U. also ranks No. 36 on the list of Top 50 Best Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy Schools.

BUSINESS SCHOOL

The David Eccles School of Business’ undergraduate program has been rated among the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report in the past three years. The Executive MBA program was ranked 22nd in the nation by Financial Times. The school also has been ranked in the top 25 the past five straight years for entrepreneurship by the Princeton Review.

The U.’s graduate accounting program was rated top 35 in the nation in 2016.

LAW SCHOOL

The S.J. Quinney College of Law, which opened a new building in the fall of 2015, was ranked 16th by both National Jurist and PreLaw Magazine for practical training in 2016.

JON M. HUNTSMAN CENTER

T

he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue.

The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007.

Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ’82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 13 NCAA regional championships (most recently in 2016) and two Pac-12 Championships.

Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-theart sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse.

Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81). Perhaps the most legendary NCAA Tournament game of all time—the 1979 NCAA Championship game starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson—was played in the Huntsman Center.
