MEET NOTES Tonight The preseason No. 6-ranked Utah gymnastics team (00, 0-0 Pac-12) opens its 2017 season by hosting No. 7 Michigan (0-0, 0-0 Big Ten) in the Huntsman Center.

Quick Sticks Utah has shattered its school season ticket record, selling season seats in the upper deck for the first time in school history. More than 8,600 season tickets have been sold, extending into row five of the upper bowl … The last time Utah hosted Michigan in the Huntsman Center on March 6, 2015, the two teams competed before the largest crowd in NCAA gymnastics history (16,019) … The Utes were ranked sixth in the preseason coaches’ poll—the only school in the preseason top six that did not make the Super Six last year. Utah, the 2015 NCAA runner-up, finished ninth a year ago at the NCAA Championships, after winning its regional … In the Pac-12 Conference preseason coaches’ poll, Utah was picked to finish a close second to UCLA, which is ranked No. 4 in the nation. Utah trailed the Bruins by two points (47-45) and two first-place votes (5-3) in the Pac-12 poll.

Fan Fun The Kid Zone opens at 3:30 p.m. and features a balloon artist, face painter, poster-making station and more … Saturday’s meet is Alumni Night and Utah gymnastics alumni will be recognized on the floor following the meet … Season ticket holders may pick up their exclusive Red Rocks Beanie prior to the meet with the voucher included in their season ticket packet. Chalk Talk The Utes elected co-captains in senior Baely Rowe and junior Maddy Stover … The lead vault coach this season is second-year assistant Meredith Paulicivic. She has 18 years of experience on the event as a club coach. Paulicivic handles the floor exercise choreography, as well, and is assisting cohead coach Megan Marsden on beam … Co-head coach Tom Farden takes over as the lead floor coach.

He will continue to oversee bars.

Lineup Look Utah returns eight letterwinners, among them four All-Americans: senior Baely Rowe and sophomores Kari Lee, Sabrina Schwab and Maddy Stover. Lee, a first-team All-American on vault and floor as a freshman in 2015, returns for her second sophomore season after missing most of 2016 with a torn Achilles … Schwab was the 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year … Rowe (beam) and junior Tiffani Lewis (floor) are the reigning Pac-12 champions on those events … Making their Ute debut will be freshmen MyKayla Skinner, Missy Reinstadtler and Kim Tessen, as well as sophomore transfer Macey Roberts. Skinner, the 2016 Glasgow World Cup all-around champion and an alternate for the gold medal 2016 USA Olympic Team, placed fourth in the all-around at the Olympic Trials. Reinstadtler and Tessen are both Junior Olympic National champions.

Ute Insider Freshman MyKayla Skinner performs some of the most difficult elements in collegiate gymnastics history including a double twisting double back on her first floor pass. The four-year U.S. Senior National Team member is scheduled to go all-around against Michigan … Also projected to make their first all-around appearances as Utes are sophomores MaKenna Merrell and Sabrina Schwab … All-America all-arounder Baely Rowe is another potential all-arounder for the first meet—starting the week in three lineups (bars, beam and floor) … Newcomers penciled into starting positions against Michigan include freshman Kim Tessen on vault and bars and sophomore Macey Roberts on floor …

Utah’s sophomore class gained two “recruits” in the offseason. Three-time All-American Kari Lee gained her sophomore season back after missing most of 2016 with an Achilles’ tear. Roberts, who competed at Maryland as a freshman, is just the second transfer gymnast Utah has ever accepted.

Co-Head Coach 8th/33rd Year

F

ormer NCAA all-around champion Megan Marsden is in her 33rd year on the Utah coaching staff and her eighth as the co-head coach. As a gymnast or coach, Marsden has participated in all of Utah’s record-tying 10 national championships and 36 of its record 41 national championship appearances.

Since becoming the co-head coach in 2010, she has compiled a 151-54-3 overall record and has twice been named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2014, 2015). She is also a two-time NCAA Region Head Coach of the Year (2011, 2012).

Marsden began coaching at her alma mater in 1985 after leading Utah to four national championships as a 12-time first-team AllAmerican and three-time NCAA champion from 1981-84. She spent 25 years as an assistant or associate coach.

She and husband Greg have two sons, Montana and Dakota. Greg coached the Ute gymnastics team for 40 years before retiring after the 2015 NCAA Championships.

Co-Head Coach 2nd/7th Year

I

n six years at Utah—including last season as the co-head coach—Tom Farden has been a vital cog in the program’s six NCAA Championship appearances, 2015 NCAA runner-up finish and two Pac-12 championships. Farden, who owns a 19-7-1 record in one season as Utah’s co-head coach, has a career record of 90-55-1 that includes six years at Southeast Missouri State.

In addition to his coaching duties, Farden oversees Utah’s recruiting and training. Utah’s bar coach his entire career at the school, he also assists on the other events. As an assistant or head Utah coach, Farden is credited for contributing to 35 All-America performances, nine individual regional championships and 10 individual Pac-12 titles. The program has also performed well in the classroom. Utah has placed in the top five in the country in gymnastics team GPA for the past five years, including first place in 2014 and second place in 2015 and 2016.

He and his wife Christina have a son, Ki.

Meredith Paulicivic Assistant Coach 2nd Year

n her second year as Utah’s assistant coach, former Ute All-American Meredith Paulicivic (pronounced paul-a-civic) has already begun putting her stamp on the program. Her background as a high-level choreographer has brought a new look to Utah’s floor routines.

This season, in addition to her responsibilities designing and coaching the choreography and dance elements on floor, Paulicivic will serve as Utah’s primary vault coach. She has familiarity with that event at Utah as well, as a former three-time vault AllAmerican. As a gymnast at Utah from 1991-94, the former Meredith King competed for two Utah NCAA Championship teams (1992, 1994) and was a team captain her senior season.

Paulicivic draws from both a club and NCAA coaching background. Her 18 years as an assistant or head coach at SCEGA Gymnastics in Temecula, Calif., were sandwiched between stints at Pac-12 schools California (1996) and Arizona (2015).

She is married to George Paulicivic. They have a son Corbin and daughters Blayne and Avery.

It marked the seventh-straight year that UUHC ranked among the nation’s top 10 academic medical centers in quality, safety and accountability. The U. also ranks No. 36 on the list of Top 50 Best Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy Schools.

BUSINESS SCHOOL

The David Eccles School of Business’ undergraduate program has been rated among the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report in the past three years. The Executive MBA program was ranked 22nd in the nation by Financial Times. The school also has been ranked in the top 25 the past five straight years for entrepreneurship by the Princeton Review.

The U.’s graduate accounting program was rated top 35 in the nation in 2016.

LAW SCHOOL

The S.J. Quinney College of Law, which opened a new building in the fall of 2015, was ranked 16th by both National Jurist and PreLaw Magazine for practical training in 2016.

JON M. HUNTSMAN CENTER

T

he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue.

The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007.

Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ’82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 13 NCAA regional championships (most recently in 2016) and two Pac-12 Championships.

Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-theart sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse.

Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81). Perhaps the most legendary NCAA Tournament game of all time—the 1979 NCAA Championship game starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson—was played in the Huntsman Center.

Nation’s Attendance Leader Utah, which has won six all-women’s sports attendance titles (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016) and 32 gymnastics attendance crowns, has averaged more than 14,000 fans a meet for the past seven seasons and nearly 12,000 over the past 25 years. The Huntsman Center has hosted one crowd in excess of 16,000, 17 crowds in excess of 15,000 and 38 crowds of 14,000 or more. The Utes set a national gymnastics attendance record in 2015, averaging 14,950 fans per meet. Last year’s average was 14,928. Utah also owns the NCAA gymnastics single-meet attendance record (16,019 against Michigan in 2015).
