MEET NOTES Tonight The No. 4-ranked Utah gymnastics team (0-0, 0-0 Pac-12) opens its 2016 season against Brigham Young (0-0) in the annual Deseret Duel rivalry meet.

Quick Sticks Tonight’s meet marks the debut of co-head coaching tandem Megan Marsden and Tom Farden. Marsden is in her seventh year as co-head coach and her 32nd year overall on the Utah coaching staff. Farden, formerly the head coach at Southeast Missouri State, begins his sixth season at Utah and his first as its co-head coach … The 2016 Utes have already surpassed their previous school record for season tickets. The current total of 7,266 season tickets breaks the old mark of 7,142 set in 2014. The 2015 Utes broke their own NCAA attendance record last year, averaging 14,950 fans to their home meets … Two-time defending Pac-12 champion Utah was picked to win the conference title again this season by vote of the coaches. The 2015 NCAA runner-up Utes were ranked No. 4 in the national preseason poll— receiving 14 first-place votes.

Fan Fun A pre-meet ceremony will honor the Utes for their back-to-back Pac-12 Championships in 2014-15 and their runner-up finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships … The Kid Zone by portal 5 on the concourse features a balloon artist, face painting, a poster making station and more.

Chalk Talk The NCAA Gymnastics Committee revised the vault code in the offseason and the Yurchenko full performed by the majority of college gymnasts has been downgraded from a 10.0 start value to a 9.95. One who has benefitted from the rule change is senior Breanna Hughes, who has vaulted to count just once in her career, but has 10.0-valued

Yurchenko one-and-a-half that she is performing extremely well … Utah looks to replace four AllAmericans from its 2015 team, including three Pac-12 all-around champions—Corrie Lothrop (2012), Tory Wilson (2014) and Georgia Dabritz (2015)—and an NCAA champion (Dabritz on bars, 2015).

Lineup Look The current roster features five All-Americans: seniors Kailah Delaney, Breanna Hughes and Kassandra Lopez and sophomores Kari Lee and Samantha Partyka. Lee qualified for NCAA event finals on vault and floor last year as a first-team All-American … Other returning starters include junior Baely Rowe and sophomores Tiffani Lewis and Maddy Stover … Including exhibition routines, 11 gymnasts are expected to compete in this week’s opener, including freshmen MaKenna Merrell, Erika Muhaw and Sabrina Schwab.

Ute Insider Freshman MaKenna Merrell’s sister Mickell was a BYU gymnast from 2008-12 … The Utes did not elect team captains this year, instead opting for a Leadership Council. Members of the Leadership Council are Kailah Delaney, Breanna Hughes, Kassandra Lopez and Baely Rowe … Sophomore Kari Lee is tentatively scheduled to make her first career all-around appearance tonight. A three-event performer last season, Lee will also be competing to count on bar for the first time. Scheduled to start on three events: Delaney, Hughes, Rowe, Tiffany Lewis and Samantha Partyka.

Series Shorts Utah leads the series with BYU 93-2 (43-0 in Salt Lake City) … The Utes have won 35 straight against the Cougars since getting edged 196.050-195.975 in Provo in 1998. (continued on page 30)

ormer NCAA all-around champion Megan Marsden is in her 32nd year on the Utah coaching staff and her seventh as the cohead coach. As a gymnast or coach, Marsden has participated in all of Utah’s record-tying 10 national championships and 19 Super Six appearances.

Since becoming the co-head coach in 2010, she has compiled a 132-47-2 overall record and has twice been named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2014, 2015). She is also a two-time NCAA Region Head Coach of the Year (2011, 2012).

Marsden began coaching at her alma mater in 1985 after leading Utah to four national championships as a 12-time first-team AllAmerican and three-time NCAA champion from 1981-84. She spent 25 years as an assistant or associate coach.

She and husband Greg (Utah’s gymnastics coach for 40 years) have two sons, Montana and Dakota. Montana is pursuing an MBA from Utah and Dakota is the director of player personnel for the Utah gymnastics team.

n April 20, 2015, one day after he celebrated his first NCAA individual champion, Tom Farden was promoted to co-head coach at Utah, joining Megan Marsden at the helm. Farden, Utah’s assistant coach for the previous five years, draws from 18 years of NCAA coaching experience.

He was the head coach at Southeast Missouri State from 2004-09, where he compiled a 70-46 record and was the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional Coach of the Year and a four-time conference coach of the year.

Farden continues to coach the uneven bars, his primary event since coming to Utah, and has also taken over as the lead vault coach. He assisted coaching floor in his first five seasons at Utah, when the bar and floor lineups produced 26 All-America awards, an NCAA champion, nine routines in the NCAA individual event finals, seven regional champions and six Pac-12 individual titles.

He and his wife Christina have a son, Ki.

Meredith Paulicivic Assistant Coach 1st year

eredith Paulicivic (pronounced paul-a-civic) is in her first year as a Utah gymnastics assistant coach, but she is plenty familiar with both the storied program and the Pac-12 Conference. As Meredith King, she competed for two Utah NCAA Championship teams from 1991-94, when she was a three-time vault All-American and a team captain her senior season.

This is Paulicivic’s third Pac-12 assistantship.

She was an assistant coach at California in 1996 and spent last season in the same role at Arizona.

She also brings 18 years of high-level club coaching experience from SCEGA Gymnastics in Temecula, Calif. At SCEGA, she coached a number of elite level gymnasts and six U.S. National Team members.

She is married to George Paulicivic. They have a son Corbin and daughters Blayne and Avery.

T

he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue.

The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007.

Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ’82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 12 NCAA regional championships (most recently in 2012) and two Pac-12 Championships.

Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition.

The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-the-art sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse.

Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center

ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81). Perhaps the most legendary NCAA Tournament game of all time—the 1979 NCAA Championship game starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson—was played in the Huntsman Center.

Guard Young, an assistant men’s gymnastics coach at Oklahoma from 2000-05 and 2011-15, takes over as the head BYU coach, replacing Brad Cattermole, the Cougars’ coach for the past 27 years.

Nation’s Attendance Leader Utah broke its own NCAA gymnastics attendance

record in 2015, averaging 14,950 fans to its regular-season home meets. The Utes also broke the attendance record for a Pac-12 Championship in 2015, drawing a two-session total of 23,568 and setting the single-session mark with 14,402 spectators. Utah, which attracted an NCAA singlemeet gymnastics crowd of 16,019 against Michigan, captured its fifth all-women’s sports attendance title in 2015 and its 31st gymnastics attendance crown.

Utah owns every NCAA gymnastics attendance record and has averaged more than 14,000 fans a meet for the past six seasons and more than 11,000 dating back to 1990. The Huntsman Center (seating capacity 15,000) has hosted one crowd in excess of 16,000, 13 crowds in excess of 15,000 and 36 crowds of 14,000 or more.
