Message from our Chair Dear Friends, Thank you for your support of the Mill River Park Collaborative. People have asked me why there should be a need for the Collaborative when Mill River Park is a city park. There is a very simple answer. With so many pressing needs facing a city like Stamford - schools, roads, etc. - today, it takes a public/private partnership to create and sustain something that is not critical, but rather an important contributor to the quality of life and growth of a community.

committed to c land care ever possible
I hope you will agree that Mill River Park is already adding substantially to the quality of life in Stamford. Whether it's Saturday morning entertainment in the playground, Zumba classes on the Grand Steps, Saturday night movies on the Great Lawn, or just sitting on a bench enjoying a sandwich and nature, something new and wonderful is taking place in the heart of Stamford Downtown. And with the carousel pavilion under construction, to be followed by the ice rink and interactive fountain and Discovery Center, life will be getting better and better. None of this would be possible without the Collaborative and your support. The Collaborative is responsible for the cost to operate, maintain, and program the Park. It has raised more than $20 million in private, corporate, and foundation funds to create the amenities that make an urban park successful. In partnership with the City, we are planting the trees, creating the meadows, and designing the greenways that will soothe and enthuse generations to come. Your ongoing support is critical to our success, and that success will be measured not just this year or next, but in the legacy we leave behind. With sincerest thanks,
Arthur Selkowitz Chairman
Off to the Races On June 15th we officially broke ground on the Brownstein-Selkowitz Carousel Pavilion. Construction is underway in the northwest corner of Mill River Park. The pavilion will be open year-round for children to enjoy the Nissen Carousel, and with integrated benches lining the room along with festively colored tables and chairs there’s ample options for parents to grab a bite from the Rich Pantry while they watch their kids go round-and-round. For more leisurely recreation head out to the Osman Patio to admire the Jaffe Heritage Cherry Tree Grove and enjoy storytime with your young children. The pavilion is also a great special events venue for parties of up to 300 people, and we’ll certainly have plenty to celebrate leading up to the Grand Opening in 2016. We look forward to having all of our supporters join us in opening our first Park structure!

While the core plantings of th remained the same, there are areas that have been replanted with purpose. There ar Butterfly Waystations specifically planted to attract and sustain the Monarch butterfl at the Mill River Street entrance and on Butterfly Hill in the playground. Mill River Stewards The two main objectives of the program are to increase access to environmental career options and to use Mill River Park as a living classroom. To accomplish these goals, Stewards engaged in several projects, enriching field trips, and career-related workshops during their internship. Through their work planting trees, shrubs, wildflowers and herbaceous plants they learn to identify different types of native plants and are trained in invasive plant identification and removal methods. They also gain experience in organic and other land care methods that are minimally disruptive to the existing ecosystem, including the remediation, restoration and stabilization of Mill River stream banks. The 2015 Mill River Stewards cohort was a diverse group committed to a summer of environmental education and career development training. During their internship, they spent approximately 6 hours a day working in the Park alongside land care staff, visited the High Line and Central Park in NYC, and enhanced the Park’s nursery, to name a few of their summer activities.
2015 Stewards worked in the Park nursery to build a shade pergola. It will be used to cultivate plants that prefer shady environments before they’re transplanted to the Park.
Engaging the Community The cornerstone of the Collaborative’s motto of connecting People and Nature is community engagement. Park programs provide the greater Stamford community positive, safe, and engaging activities to build a connection with nature, the Park, and fellow community members. Most importantly, Park programs are free to the public thanks to donor support and sponsorships. Our programs have drawn thousands to the Park, and for many people these events are their first time in Mill River Park. This year our fitness classes were more varied and performance arts events more thrilling! There were high-flying acrobatics from Nimble Arts and Alloy Orchestra amazed an audience for a special movie night on the Karp Family Great Lawn. Popular Zumba and yoga classes were enhanced by unique fitness programs like Afro Flow Yoga, Bolly Fit, and Mommy & Me Stroller Fitness. Fun Saturday Mornings even got more exciting for kids with new interactive performances, the most popular being a visit from the humorous characters of the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers. There was something for everyone to get out in the Park and enjoy this year!
“It’s a good way to keep people moving and healthy! Thanks Mill River Park.” - Jessica T. on Zumba class
“Yoga in Mill River Park is the greatest gift to Stamford residents. So lovely to see health promoting activities provided for residents. I am so grateful.” - Ann G.
Dinner in the Park 3rd Annual Dinner in the Park Gala: May 7, 2015 This year we welcomed over 700 Park supporters! Thank you to all of our wonderful sponsors and supporters who made the evening such a success. We’d like to extend a special thank you to the Gala Co-Chairs, Gertrude and Cornelius Prior, Harley and Steven Osman, and Jevera Kaye Hennessey, for their dedicated efforts, and to our event underwriters Thomson Reuters and Trafigura. It was a beautiful and temperate spring night that started with an extended cocktail reception among the Park landscape and continued into a tented dinner party. Mill River Park Collaborative was delighted to honor Thomas L. Rich this year for his long-time commitment to Mill River Park and the City of Stamford.

Giving Back Volunteers put in 5,960 hours in Mill River Park and Greenway, which is the equivalent of almost 3 full time employees. With their help we were able to keep the lawns green, the trees thriving, the meadows blooming, and the river flowing trash free. Thank you to the 2014-15 corporate groups and individual volunteers that came out by the hundreds to give back to the Park and the Stamford community. We are grateful to have such dedicated returning and new corporate groups volunteer this year, including Crius Energy, Diageo, EY, GE, Harman, Indeed.com, K2 Advisors/Franklin Templeton, KPMG, Moffley Media, Morgan Stanley, Nestle Waters, Nielsen, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Reckson, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Thomson Reuters, Trafigura, UBS Americas, and Viacom.
