Obituary

Konrad LeMack Chavis was born in Guilford County on July 9, 1956 to Mack Daniel Chavis, Sr. and Emma Lee Slade Chavis. He transitioned peacefully in the comfort of his home the morning of Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

Konrad completed Mount Zion Elementary School and graduated from Northeast Senior High School, Class of 1976. As a youngster, he grew up in a family of eleven children who all attended Sunday school and Vacation Bible School at Laughlin Memorial. Later he participated on the Trustee Committee and served as a consultant for building maintenance projects and in the Methodist Men organization. In his youth, he enjoyed baseball and was cheered often for home-runs. In high school, he participated in track and field sports and was a popular football player who really showed his agility by carrying the football across the finish-line when it really was tight to score! He was the recipient of several trophies for his star performance. He enjoyed sharing jokes and hearty laughs that attracted many friends and road-buddies.

Shortly after graduation, Konrad worked an apprenticeship with his dad, Mack and helped to expand the Chavis Builders family construction business. Many homes throughout Greensboro, Sedalia and McLeansville area reflect the carpentry skill of this Chavis team. His brother, Eric joined the team upon completion of his tour in the U.S. Navy and they worked together until retirement. Konrad was attentive to construction costs and details of measurements required to build quality homes and complete renovations. He was known for his left hand carpentry skills with a keen eye while building. He whistled the latest rock tunes while working and listening to the radio.

The love-bug bit him and he married his high-school sweetheart, Georgia Lea Smith. April 9th of this year, Konrad and Georgia celebrated 46 years of marriage. Love abound in their creative log-cabin styled home warmly welcoming their children and grandchildren. He loved family gatherings and daily fellowship with his brothers. Konrad and Georgia often hosted family cook-outs for birthday, anniversary and holiday observances. His recipe for fried chicken and ribs is a definite secret that family and friends certainly enjoyed. On weekends, there was always extra food on the menu for impromptu visitors.

Konrad was preceded in death by his father, Mack Daniel Chavis, Sr. and his mother, Emma Lee Slade Chavis, and his infant brother, Boniven Chavis; Brother-in-law: John Wayne Smith and Sister-in-Law: Pinkie Jackson Chavis.

He loved God’s handiwork by gardening and sharing the fruit of his labor with family and neighbors while recognizing God’s blessings of sunshine and rain. He cherished fishing in lakes, the vast ocean and hunting in many acres throughout eastern North Carolina with his hunting club friends. He raised an orchard of fruit – muscadine and scuppernong grapes, peaches, plums and apple trees. His farm animals (chickens, goats and pigs) enjoyed feeding time with him. He built bird feeders throughout the property welcoming the birds who chirped to greet him as he walked about each morning.

Konrad’s life will be celebrated and cherished by his loving wife, Georgia Smith Chavis; daughter, LaKesha Chavis Cross (LaShay) of Greensboro, NC; son, Kouri Chavis of McLeansville, NC; ; five grandchildren, LaShawn, LaKye, LaKayden, Azaria and Kamaree; four sisters, Loleta Chavis, Esther Chavis Garrett, Bonita Chavis Spear (Dan), and Leasa Chavis Graves (Elvis); five brothers, Chanslar Chavis (Jessie), Nikita Chavis I, Eric Chavis, Sr., Boris Chavis (Dianne) and Mack D. Chavis, Jr. (Katherine); four sisters in-law, Doris Smith Vaughn (Greg), Kim Smith Deck (Maurice), and Felicia Smith (Joseph) and Tracie Chavis; three brothers in-law, Larry Smith (Susan), Marvin Smith (Tammy), and Floyd Smith (Paula). Konrad was blessed with a host of caring nieces, nephews and cousins. He was embraced by many devoted relatives and friends who surrounded him with love.
