Gwen

Gwendolyn Diane Davis was born in Washington, DC on December 10, 1952, to Sara Mattie and William H. Davis. She was the third born of four daughters. Gwen was the adventurous sister of the bunch. A tomboy at heart, growing up she rough-housed with her nieces, nephews, and cousins who were close in age when she visited Smithfield, North Carolina, in the summer months. She loved jumping out of barns onto haystacks, flying kites and beetle bugs. She loved playing football, kick ball, dodge ball, and challenged the neighborhood boys to foot races, which she always won.

Gwen was raised in the First Seventh - Day Adventist Church, where she was baptized at the age of 12. She was very active singing in the children’s choir, was a junior usher, and was a Pathfinder. In her free time outside of the church, she had a passion for roller skating and loved riding motorcycles.

She received her early education at DuPont Park Seventh-Day Adventist school and later attended Cardoza High School in Washington D.C. where she graduated in 1970.

As a young adult, her first child and only son, Westney Ronald Cross was born. Sometime later she met and married Terence H. Cross and from this union Tersha Cross Broadnax was born. Finally meeting her soul mate in 1978, Gwen married William E Flood Sr. in 1980. The pair enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveled the country together in his big rig . They settled in Smithfield N.C., where William and Gwen welcomed their daughter, Jahnique I. Flood in Raleigh, NC in 1982. During this time, she joined the Gethsemane Seventh-Day Adventist Church where she was active in ministry, enjoying outdoor activities and fellowship with the Bycota Club members. Gwen was also a member of the Bell chapter reunion committee in Smithfield.

In 1987, William and Gwen moved to Greensboro, NC, which will eventually become their permanent hometown. Gwen joined the East Market Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where all the members quickly became her new and long-lasting church family. Throughout the years, Gwen served as an usher, choir member, and on the Sabbath school team.

Gwen served 20+ years in the Guilford County School System where she worked in the cafeteria, and later became a school bus driver, which she loved the most. She loved driving the kids and they loved Ms. Gwen. During that time, she became a beloved member of the Greensboro and High Point community, by getting to know many parents, students, and fellow bus drivers.

REMEMBERING

Upon retirement, Gwen filled her time giving back to the community by providing transportation to fellow senior church members and feeding the homeless every Thanksgiving. She also participated in fun and exciting senior activities including busting a move with her fellow line dancers each week and being a member of the seniors hiking/walking club every year. But her most favorite way to spend her free time was with her grandchildren, whether that be traveling to California to see her three youngest, or when her three adult grandchildren came to visit Greensboro. Everyone who was a guest in Gwen’s home knows that it was filled with both laughter and many plants. She was a person who got great joy by simply chatting with her friends and family. Her infectious laugh and memorable phrase, “You’re so simple!” was a warm response to her genuine reaction to something funny that was said. She loved attending as many family and church gatherings as possible, as they both were always close to her heart because she was such a happy-golucky person.

In addition to her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by husband, William E. Flood Sr.

Those who remain to spread the kindness and fond memories of Gwendolyn Davis Flood are her three sisters, Nellie Dawson, Patricia Kingsberry, and Wezlynn Davis; adopted sisters, Mary Shmittick and Denise Hart; Gwen’s three children, Westney R. Cross, Tersha C. Broadnax, and Jahnique I. Flood El; grandchildren, Jamir Broadnax, Tershauna Bradshaw (Ross), Tasia Broadnax, Daylon Flood El, Destin and D’trien Flood El; great grandchildren, Ameerah, and one on the way; she also gained bonus children through marriage, William E. LETTING GO

Letting go has always been hard, But not as hard as this Until they’re gone we now know, How much there is to miss. We never want t say goodbye, It hurts all too much.

Be we know that in our prayers and dreams

We’ll always keep in touch On this earth Mom , you were loved by us, And by everyone you knew You were one of a kind, there could never be another you. So now we have to let go.

Our healing has to start, Although Mom we may not see you face to face, You’ll forever remain within our hearts.
