Artist of the Month Your journey from a family of business pioneers to becoming the CEO and Managing Director of AVA Global Logistics is inspiring. Can you share some pivotal moments that shaped your entrepreneurial path? I began my entrepreneurial journey shortly after completing my undergraduate degree at BBM, joining my family’s various businesses covering 22-23 different industries. I gained hands-on experience starting at junior level to ensure I had a solid foundation for seven years. This experience, particularly in commodity and global financial markets, shaped my understanding of market dynamics. I did a particularly educational job with PepsiCo, which set up a manufacturing plant for their snack foods in Kolhapur. We faced stiff competition from multinational companies in my family’s agricultural commodities. Our edge was in maintaining our sourcing capabilities and lean costs. However, I noticed the difference in shipping and delivery costs, which piqued my interest. That’s when the concept of AVA Global emerged, initially as a solution to our internal logistics needs By December 2014, AVA Global was launched. In 2015, I completely changed my focus on this project and moved to Bombay. Now, in eight years, Ava Global handles logistics for about 350 companies, mostly listed organisations. I believe our success is largely due to my past experience as a shipper. Understanding the differences in the logistics industry from the customer’s perspective, we integrated solutions such as real-time information, container tracking, personalized services, etc. This unique approach, coupled with technological advancements, has been a factor which is important in our development.
AVA Global Logistics has achieved remarkable success under your leadership. What strategies and principles have played a key role in the company's growth and achievements? At AVA Global Logistics, our success can be attributed to several key strategies and key principles. First and foremost, we prioritize innovation in the logistics industry For example, we have already seen the need for real-time consumption tracking and updates for our customers. This not only improved transparency but also improved the efficiency of our operations. Another important principle is the integration of technology to reduce redundancy and improve communication within our teams. We have developed systems that ensure the accuracy of information provided to our clients and save time through automation. Additionally, our commitment to understanding our customers’ needs from the shipper’s perspective has been critical.
This customer-centric approach allows us to provide personalized services and meet the unique needs of each of our customers. Finally, building a strong and sustainable organization has become a major focus. I learned lessons from working with large companies like PepsiCo, emphasizing the importance of well-structured systems and processes that outlast individuals. We believe this approach ensures the longevity of our company.

You have a diverse background in multi-commodity trading, manufacturing, and exports. How has this diverse experience influenced your leadership style at AVA Global? My diverse background in product marketing, manufacturing and logistics has greatly influenced my leadership style at AVA Global. This has given me a comprehensive perspective on different aspects of business, from supply chain to international marketing. My experience in various industries has taught me to be flexible and versatile in my decision making. This has allowed me to bring insights from these areas into the logistics industry, allowing us to understand the unique needs of customers across different industries. Additionally, my manufacturing background gave me an appreciation for efficiency and strategic planning, which we have implemented in our logistics operations. Overall, my experiences at AVA Global have contributed to our ability to deliver comprehensive and tailored solutions to our clients.
AVA Global has been involved in supporting complex logistics requirements for major projects like the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria. Can you tell us more about the challenges and solutions involved in such projects? Supporting large projects such as the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria presents many logistical challenges. Firstly, navigating Nigeria’s complex laws and regulations can be particularly challenging. AVA Global had to ensure strict compliance with local regulations, which often required extensive paperwork and bureaucratic hurdles. Moreover, the delivery of materials to the last mile of a construction site is no small feat, especially for a project as large as the Dangote refinery. Road conditions, safety concerns, and just the distance present huge challenges. We solved this by implementing the alternative solution. One such solution was the use of Shipper-Owned Containers (SOC) boxes. These containers not only simplified the transportation process but also ensured safe and efficient delivery.

As a leader, what advice would you give to emerging entrepreneurs and business professionals who aspire to make a significant impact in their respective fields? My advice to emerging business professionals aspiring to make a significant impact in their fields is to be perseverant and resilient. In the face of challenges and setbacks, it's important to stay determined and adapt when necessary. Additionally, never lose sight of the fundamentals that are the basis of your industry. A strong understanding of the basics is the foundation upon which you can build solutions and meaningful contributions. Keep learning, stay open to change, and maintain your passion for what you do to create a lasting impact.
Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for AVA Global Logistics, both in terms of business expansion and its role in contributing to social and environmental causes? Our goals for AVA Global Logistics are two-fold. First, we aim for substantial business expansion, both vertically and horizontally within the logistics industry. This expansion will not only strengthen our global presence but also generate promising employment opportunities, contributing to economic growth and stability.Simultaneously we are committed to fulfilling our corporate social responsibility by contributing to environmental causes. As part of this commitment, we are working to make our offices completely paperless, reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainability. We see this as a vital step toward a more eco-friendly operation, aligning our business growth with a dedication to minimizing environmental impact, thus striving for a more balanced and responsible future.

Balancing my responsibilities as a business leader and philanthropic endeavors is a matter of time management and deep purpose. I view philanthropy as an important part of my life and believe in giving back to the community. To achieve this balance, I prioritize my professional commitments during regular business hours and devote specific time to charitable activities. I am also surrounded by a dedicated team that shares my commitment to social causes, enabling them to better coordinate our philanthropic efforts. Strong support systems and a clear sense of purpose are essential to effective execution of staff leadership and philanthropic efforts. In the end, I find the satisfaction and impact of our charity work well worth the effort.
In today's rapidly changing global logistics landscape, what trends do you see shaping the industry, and how is AVA Global adapting to these changes? In the ever growing global logistics industry, several key factors are changing the future of the industry. The emergence of new commercial corridors and the development of several industrial parks are going to streamline and integrate the supply chain. Additionally, the increasing focus on sustainable development is driving the adoption of low-carbon fuels for transportation reducing the environmental impact of the logistics industry with AI empowering the integration of blockchain technologies to transform commercial settlement processes with, increased transparency and security. AVA Global is investing in technologies and infrastructure by doing so, it is actively adapting to such changes by fostering environmentally friendly practices and using innovations to maintain its position in the dynamic export market.

GENDER GAP: WOMEN, MEDICATION AND CANNABIS WRITTEN BY: DR. AMY CARMICHAEL The gender gap in medication and cannabis use is a multifaceted issue with profound implications for women's health. For decades, women were systematically excluded from clinical trials due to concerns about hormonal fluctuations and potential impacts on research results. This exclusion continued until the 1980s when the National Institutes of Health (NIH) encouraged the inclusion of women in clinical research. In 1986, the NIH established a policy that encouraged researchers to include women in studies. This policy was first published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts in 1987. By July 1989, the NIH announced through a Memorandum on Inclusion that research solicitations should actively encourage the inclusion of women and minorities, marking a significant shift towards gender-inclusive medical research.

Incorporating whole foods, regular exercise, and stress reduction techniques can significantly improve women's health by reducing the risk of various medical conditions. A balanced diet is one of the cornerstones of women's health. Incorporating plenty of fruits and vegetables can provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support the body's natural defenses and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Moreover, regular exercise not only helps in maintaining a healthy weight but also plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Approximately 90% of women suffer from Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS), and around 190 million women of reproductive age are affected by endometriosis. Medicinal cannabis shows promise in relieving symptoms of PMS and endometriosis. Moreover, women have a higher prevalence of anxiety, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, headaches, and autoimmune diseases. Medicinal cannabis, with its anti-inflammatory properties, may provide relief for women dealing with these conditions. However, it's crucial to highlight that medicinal cannabis should be used under an authorised prescriber's guidance to ensure its safe and effective use and fight the stigma surrounding it.
BREAKING THE STIGMA SURROUNDING MEDICINAL CANNABIS The stigma associated with cannabis, especially concerning its potential cognitive effects, can be particularly impactful for women. Women often bear the role of caregivers within their families, caring for children and older family members. What initially drew you to jewellery design, and how did your early experiences in your father's business contribute to your passion for creating unique pieces? Initially, my career path was leaning towards economics. However, frequent visits to jewellery shops ignited a deep fascination for jewellery design within me. Witnessing the allure of jewellery sparked my passion. My early experiences in my father's business instilled in me a desire to craft distinctive pieces. Working with gold posed challenges, so I began experimenting with diverse materials, eventually leading me to where I am today.
Boli's name carries significant meaning. Can you delve into the symbolism behind the name and how it reflects the essence of your handmade jewellery brand? "Boli" signifies speech. I envisioned my brand to speak through my creations, letting the work itself communicate its essence. Each ornament crafted is a manifestation of my love for jewellery, narrating stories, whether belonging to a customer or my own. In essence, it speaks (Boli) for itself.
Nature seems to be a major influence on your designs. Could you share specific instances of how everyday elements like flowers, animals, and insects inspire your creative process? Nature's elements play a pivotal role in my designs. From shell necklaces reminiscent of the sea to seahorse brooches inspired by experiences at SeaWorld AUH, my pieces bear the imprints of daily nature walks. The love for nature intertwines with the creation process—what you love, you manifest.
The White Tiger Brooch gained recognition during a collaboration with Cosmopolitan. Can you walk us through the process of creating this cherished piece and the impact it had on your brand's visibility? The journey began with a collaboration proposal from Cosmo, brainstorming ideas for an appealing piece. Hearing my niece's tales of feeding a tiger in South Africa struck a chord, leading to the creation of the White Tiger Brooch. Its adoration surged, leading to a feature in Cosmopolitan. It is versatile and effortlessly stylish which made it a standout piece, amplifying our brand's visibility.
As a female entrepreneur, you've navigated challenges like finding the right customers and effective social media marketing. What key lessons have you learned in overcoming these hurdles, and what advice would you give to others in similar situations? Growing through these challenges taught me the importance of daily passion in creation, maintaining a forward-looking perspective, and fostering a strong team. My advice is to believe in yourself. If you believe it's right, take the leap—you'll find success through perseverance.
HOW 3 WEEK VISIT TO THE PHILIPPINES CHANGED MY LIFE.

When I went to the Philippines in 2009 to begin writing my first book, I thought I knew what to expect. I had a young Canadian/Filipino friend who had taught me everything that he had been taught by his family. He has been there once or twice as a child, but it had been years since he had returned to his roots. He taught what he knew, and he believed in what he taught me. So, I went to this country on the other side of the ocean with preconceived notions about a society I had never before been a part of. I learned quickly that most of what I knew was wrong. I discovered that I was there to learn not to teach. Even though I had the mindset of a person from a so called ‘first world’ nation who was trying f to understand the perceptions of those living in a developing country. Somewhere along the way,I lost my ability to believe that my country, the place I had been raised to love and respect, was any better than the place I now found myself in. I couldn’t ignore the strength of their family values, nor could I ignore the power of their faith. I began to understand that these people (often perceived by other cultures as simple) had figured out how to be happy in the face of disaster and devastation. Their faith was so strong,.that natural disasters and death did not dampen their spirits. When homes and schools were destroyed, they sang as they rebuilt.
I’ve never met people like them. I doubt I ever will. They opened my eyes to the joys of living a simpler life. They freed me of my addiction to stuff. They freed me of my fear of lack and my fear of loss. Unfortunately, I went back to Canada for a while, and fell into old habits of feeling insecure and unsure. It took leaving Canada, and moving to Costa Rica to remind me the value of being released from the burden of owning too much stuff. Now when I have extra, I give it away. Then, after 3 fascinating years in Costa Rica I moved to Mexico and once again felt smothered by stuff. I believe the more stuff you own, the less freedom you have; and for me, freedom is everything. I wonder when stuff becomes our focus? When did we.lose site that is most important.. Connection - to family, friends, community, our planet. When did the acquisition of things begin to deprive us of our desire to explore, to learn, to grow? I am one of the lucky ones, I was gifted with the ability to see beyond societal norms and I largely have the Filipino people to thank for that. They awakened in me a hunger to explore that had lain dormant for far too long. This brought out the childlike sense of wonder that I naturally had when I was young. They revived my Spirit, healed my wounded heart and opened my mind. That is why, above all else, I pray that as many people as possible l, step out of their comfort zone and go where they never thought they would have the courage to go. I think, when we become curious about those we do not know and understand we no longer feel fear, or hate…. Curiosity could lead us all to peace, if we would only allow it to.

This picturesque island has become a magnet for travellers seeking that perfect Instagram shot, and its popularity continues to rise.
