Today in Bajan History – The Almanac presents a daily glimpse into the amazing history of Barbados, our island home, with pieces for every day of the year that are designed to enlighten and entertain the reader. It is inspired by the hugely popular radio programme ‘Today in Bajan History’ which has been running on the stations of the STARCOM Network in Barbados daily since November 2020. The books contain some of the best and most popular pieces from the radio programme and includes a collection of fascinating historical photographs – some of which have never been published before. It also draws on the expertise of a team of local historians who have used the remarkably wide range of sources on Barbadian history that are available locally and internationally to compile the entries. Barbadian history is filled with stories that celebrate resilience, hope and the triumph of the human spirit. For such a small Caribbean island, Barbados is truly blessed with an incredible richness of golf courses. On the south coast can be found the Barbados Golf Club, an enjoyable 18hole championship course, and Club Rockley, a well-maintained 9-hole resort course. Both are open to the public. Market on Saturday morning in the countryside is undeniable. There is a good selection of fruit and vegetables and a sophisticated array of stalls selling food, crafts, art, plants and much more. The same is true of the Holders Farmers Market on Sunday morning, conveniently located just off the west coast on Holders Hill. Hastings Farmers Market on the south coast has a good selection of fruit and vegetables as well as food, crafts and plants. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday but they sell fresh produce on most days. Fish Markets: Fresh fish is really only available in fish markets. The largest are in Oistins and Bridgetown with others in Paynes Bay and Weston in St. James, Speightstown in St. Peter, Tent Bay in St. Joseph and Consett Bay in St. John.

To see Barbados’ marine ecosystems in full bloom, you only have to put on a mask and visit either Carlisle Bay or Folkestone Marine Park. Collectively, scientists have documented over 110 species of Reef Fish in these parks, and all the most common corals can be seen in both areas. Folkestone Marine Park & Museum, located about a half-mile north of Holetown, is a stretch of near-shore marine reserve with a protected area for snorkelling, a marine life information centre, a museum and a shop that sells snorkelling equipment, as well as food and drinks to enjoy at shaded picnic tables. Carlisle Bay Marine Park, located on the south coast, is a very popular snorkelling location, with several interesting wrecks positioned a little off-shore.

Get Lost in Barbados
With 166 square miles to explore, Barbados is the perfect place to get lost while on an island adventure. From a bustling city centre to the middle of a cane field in 10 minutes or less, you never know what’s around the corner. A mere 21 miles long by 14 miles at its widest point, you are never more than 20 minutes from the coast and there are attractions and activities all over the island. Barbados is relatively safe, with a friendly face wherever you go to help you find your way, although we do have our own unique way of giving directions such as, “Go above, cross the road, swing left and pass de rum shop pun de cornuh”. Don’t worry if you are unable to decipher any of this, just go in the direction they are pointing and look out for any landmarks mentioned. If you are well and truly lost and the GPS is of no help, one trick is to follow the red bus stop signs: ‘Bus To City’ gets you to a main road, ‘Bus Out of City’ takes you further off the beaten path. Hiring a car is an excellent idea as this allows you to explore at a leisurely pace and take in the sights and attractions that are of particular interest to you. See the Car Hire section on page 154. You will also find the fold-out Road Map, which is provided with this publication, very useful for plotting your route and finding the major attractions.

it all began back in 1703. Book a tour of the fully operational Rum Distillery and enjoy over 300 years of heritage, while sampling Mount Gay’s finest products. Animal Flower Cave is located on the stunning north coast of St. Lucy, where wild sea pounds steep cliffs. Explore the cave’s huge chambers with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. The clifftop restaurant, owner run by Sue and Mannie Ward, has awesome ocean views. It is closed on Monday. Two other areas of natural beauty on the north-east St. Lucy coastline are Little Bay, with its spouting blowholes and incredible rock pools at low tide and Cove Bay which amazingly used to be a fishing port in the days of sail. St. Nicholas Abbey in St. Peter, built in 1658, is a showpiece of Barbadian heritage. Ownermanaged by the Warren family, St. Nicholas produces an excellent range of fine rums, local liqueurs and other treats made from their own sugar cane. Rum Experience Tours need to be pre-booked, but Simon Warren is usually on hand for an entertaining rum tasting session. The Heritage Railway offers train rides several times daily. Over in St. Andrew, Morgan Lewis Mill is one of only two functional sugar windmills in the world. The Barbados National Trust property is open to tour right up to the top inside - there is also a pleasant little cafe.

A natural wonder of Barbados not to be missed. Located at the most northerly tip of the island where the coastal scenery is spectacular. The name historically comes from the many sea anemones that were present when the cave was discovered in 1753. Waves permitting, you can have a swim in the natural rock pool. The view from the naturally formed ‘windows’ out to the sea and the pounding surf is simply awesome, so don’t forget your camera. The Barbados Hiking Association came about as a result of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the Barbados National Trust. Hikes are held on Sunday at 6am with 4 different levels or 3:30pm with one level. Once a month the afternoon hike is 5:30pm to take advantage of the full moon. There is also a hike for beginners on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm when you are asked to bring a torch light. The BHA President is Sandra Nurse but Rafael Gibson, a founding member and respected hike leader, can be reached to supply information on planned hikes. Driving uphill out of Bathsheba you will find the Barbados National Trust’s Andromeda Botanic Gardens, encompassing some 6 acres of tropical gardens with exotic flowers, plants and trees from around the world.
High above the east coast on the ridge of Hackleton’s Cliff, the multifaceted PEG Farm & Nature Reserve is a good option for viewing their environmental projects and the farm, going for walks with spectacular views of the entire east coast, or enjoying the tasty organic breakfast and lunch served by the Farm House Café. From here you can take an adventurous drive further down the coast, stopping off at historical architectural gems like St. John’s Parish Church and Codrington College, both of which command wonderful views of the coast; or turn left downhill to visit quiet seaside locations such as Martin’s Bay and Bath.

Starting in Bridgetown
From settlement in 1627 until the deep-water harbour was constructed in Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay was a busy port supporting a vibrant global maritime community. Today it is arguably the best beach on the island with impressive snorkelling thanks to more than seven wrecks in close proximity. Harbour Lights Beach Club, Lobster Alive and Bali Beach Club all serve delicious food and have beach chairs and umbrellas, but there are a host of others. Although still somewhat industrial, the other side of Bridgetown has another beauty – Spring Garden Beach. The Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery has created a lovely beachside rum experience facility here.

The west coast is famous for its calm turquoise waters and idyllic swimming spots dotted with beach restaurants and bars along the series of heavenly inlets and bays of varying sizes. All the beach access points are signposted by the National Conservation Commission (NCC). The beaches with good parking and refreshments are Batts Rock, Holetown, Thunder Bay, Speightstown and Heywoods.

Up North
The north coast is wild and ferocious with a few wonderful gems; Archers Bay has a large grassy area with breezy picnic tables. River Bay has a calm inlet for swimming but if there’s sargassum seaweed around, it tends to congregate there. Little Bay is a gem at low tide where children can enjoy exploring the warm shallow pools, and the small area of sand shaded by the cliff is perfect for a picnic.

Little Bay
In the East
The longest stretch of beach in Barbados starts at Morgan Lewis and runs to Bathsheba. Beautiful and windswept, it has the full brunt of the Atlantic Ocean and is not safe for swimming. The Cattlewash segment – along the Ermy Bourne Highway – is the best for walking, especially at daybreak. The only safe swimming spots here are the rock pools at low tide. Refreshments are available at either end, Sand Dunes in Belleplaine or the eateries in Bathsheba which are all charming – Round House, Zemi East Coast Café and Atlantis Hotel. Bathsheba is a pretty stretch of beach but also only offers rock pools to amateurs. The pros surf

here year-round, at Soup Bowl, a world-famous surf break. Tent Bay is for sightseeing only. The same applies to Martins Bay, the next stop on our round the island beach tour. There are a couple of places selling refreshments but nowhere to swim. Bath, shallow and mossy, is quite different to any other beach in Barbados. It’s a popular picnic spot because the swimming is ideal for children and there’s plenty of shade.
Going South East
The picturesque south-east coast introduces you to some stunning beach scenery: Bottom Bay, Harrismith, Sam Lord’s, Crane Beach and Foul Bay. The swimming, however, is not easy and there can

be an undertow, but chairs and umbrellas are available at the Crane and Bottom Bay for lingering while enjoying some fresh coconut water from vendors – freshly picked that day. Clifftop walks along this coast are very rewarding and easy to navigate. Sam Lord’s beach has some lovely pools at the eastern end that children love at low tide. Popular stops for refreshments in this area include Dis Ole House, Cutters and Le Shack. Another glorious stretch is Long Beach, but it tends to be a bit lonely. It’s best to stick to the Silver Sands and Surfers Point areas, spectacular spots to watch windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Surfers Bay is a cool new spot for dropping into.
Down South
Miami Beach, just before Oistins, is the start of the south coast stretch. The swimming along this coast is a little choppy but generally good. Maxwell, Dover, Sandy Beach and Accra are the main beaches but there are smaller ones in between. The Richard Haynes boardwalk is a joy, running from Accra all the way to Hastings, with restaurants and bars dotted along the way. At Hastings you can continue walking along the beach until you come to the Hilton Barbados Resort and where we started, the stunning crescent of Carlisle Bay.

Must Know Tips for the Perfect Beach Day Tides
The difference between high and low tide in the tropics is relatively small, with the first low tide typically being the lowest and the second high tide typically being the highest. Additionally, the tides within a few days of the full moon are more extreme – lower lows and higher highs – while the tides within a few days of a new moon are more stable – higher lows and lower highs. The time of year also influences the tide, with the summer months typically having lower tides than the winter months. But the only time that tides need to be considered is when planning to go rock pooling in areas like Little Bay, Bathsheba or Hastings.
Sun Protection
Remember, Barbados is only 13 degrees north of the equator so be

sure to use sunscreen. If you’re going swimming in the sea make sure to use a reef safe broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunblock. Apply it at least 30 minutes before going out into direct sunlight. You should also reapply sunblock roughly every hour, sooner if you’re using a spray-on sunblock. Rash guards and hats also work well, especially for children. If you do get sunburnt, keep the burnt area out of the sun, run cool water over the burn and apply some non-perfumed lotion to help moisturise the skin. Applying aloe vera can also help ease your discomfort. Fresh aloe works well, but stains fabric.

Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk), with their yellow-green ‘apples’ found along the west coast beaches - the tree and its fruit cause severe blistering. You should also avoid sheltering under manchineel trees when it’s raining.

Generally, the best times to go to the beach are in the early to midmorning and the evening. Not only does this help you avoid the midday sun, but the early morning light on the sea is just magical.

Cattlewash
Dangerous Currents
The east coast, including Cattlewash, is notorious for dangerous currents and there are no lifeguards on duty. The western end or right-hand side of both the Crane Beach and Accra Beach are known for strong currents at times. Other coasts can also have rip tides in places, so please be cautious. At certain times of year, the west coast can have uncharacteristic big waves and strong currents. At those times swimming should be avoided.
Sargassum Seaweed
Sargassum seaweed is a recent seasonal occurrence, typically between May and September. It washes up along the east coast and to a lesser extent the south, but fortunately not along the west from Carlisle Bay to St. Lucy. The NCC leads daily cleanup efforts, working with local communities and resorts to manage the influx. For updates and beach conditions, visitors can check sargassumhub.org.

Eating Out in Barbados
Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners, there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially between December and May, so reservations are highly recommended. Sunset varies between 5:30pm in December and 6:30pm in June. An early evening reservation, sipping cocktails while the sun goes down on either the south or west coast, is a wonderful idea. The quality of the restaurants in Barbados is superb, ranging from fine dining establishments to friendly beach bars and bistros, so visitors can enjoy a wonderful variety of dining options while on the island. Wherever you decide to dine, be sure to try the island’s fresh fish. A very good choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado, referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the beloved porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other recommended catches include Flying Fish, Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish. Shrimp here are usually very large and very good. Most of the beef served is very high quality US Prime. Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars and include 17.5% VAT. Bon Appétit!

Barbados is considered to be a safe place but always be as cautious as you would at home. At the hotel: Avoid carrying large sums of cash; make copies of original documents; do not leave valuables exposed, secure them in a safe or at the front desk; remember to lock your doors. On the beach: Marijuana is illegal, avoid persons who try to offer it or other illicit drugs to you. Avoid walking or frequenting lonely beaches; do not leave cameras, cell phones and other valuable items unattended; adhere to beach signs and follow the advice of lifeguards on duty. When sightseeing: Avoid deserted areas. If you feel uneasy, leave the area. When driving: Keep on the left side of the road; avoid leaving bags or valuables in plain sight in vehicle. The sun’s UV: Barbados is close to the equator and the sun can cause severe skin damage, so be sure to use a good sunscreen, wear a hat and sit under an umbrella. Sculpins: Although extremely rare, there is a rock dwelling variety of lionfish that gives a nasty sting when stepped on. Victims should seek medical attention.

Driving Tips in a Nutshell
• In Barbados we drive on the left • Seat belts are compulsory • The roundabout system of lanes: when taking the first left exit off the roundabout you should remain in the left lane; when proceeding straight, take either lane and filter at the exit, all other exits off the roundabout remain in the right lane. At roundabouts always give way to traffic approaching from the right. • The main ABC Highway runs from the Grantley Adams International Airport, parallel to the south coast and then to the west coast. • Highways 1-7 all start in Bridgetown and branch out across the island. • Highways A-Z are the smaller roads in between. • When you hear the honk of a horn it has a variety of meanings. It could be a warning, a ‘hello’ to a passing friend, an ‘excuse me, I’m coming’ or a ‘thank you’. • When someone flashes their lights at you at a junction it usually means ‘proceed, I’m letting you go first’.
