Launched in 2020, Barbados’ remote work visa, one of the first in the world, makes it very easy for non-nationals with existing employment in their home country to move here and work without all the usual red tape. They remain tax resident overseas, so are not liable for tax here in Barbados.

Thousands of people have successfully applied. What remote work are they doing? Everything from tech, marketing, finance, education, law, distribution and logistics, and public administration.

How to Apply

This remote work programme establishes a visa to allow people to work remotely in Barbados renewable annually. The visa is available to anyone who meets the visa requirements and whose work is location independent. Once approved, the Barbados 12-Month Welcome Stamp visa is valid for one year, and if you love it, you can easily renew.

Today in Bajan History – The Almanac presents a daily glimpse into the amazing history of Barbados, our island home, with pieces for every day of the year that are designed to enlighten and entertain the reader. It is inspired by the hugely popular radio programme ‘Today in Bajan History’ which has been running on the stations of the STARCOM Network in Barbados daily since November 2020. Fresh Produce: A wide variety of very tasty, high quality vegetables and fruit are grown in Barbados. The best sources are farmers markets and roadside vendors who dot the landscape. A mere 21 miles long by 14 miles at its widest point, you are never more than 20 minutes from the coast and there are attractions and activities all over the island. Barbados is relatively safe, with a friendly face wherever you go to help you find your way, although we do have our own unique way of giving directions such as, “Go above, cross the road, swing left and pass de rum shop pun de cornuh”. Don’t worry if you are unable to decipher any of this, just go in the direction they are pointing and look out for any landmarks mentioned. If you are well and truly lost and the GPS is of no help, one trick is to follow the red bus stop signs: ‘Bus To City’ gets you to a main road, ‘Bus Out of City’ takes you further off the beaten path. Hiring a car is an excellent idea as this allows you to explore at a leisurely pace and take in the sights and attractions that are of particular interest to you. See the Car Hire section on page 154. You will also find the fold-out Road Map, which is provided with this publication, very useful for plotting your route and finding the major attractions.

Also in St. Peter, the ruined mansion of Farley Hill Park was once considered the ‘grandest house in the West Indies’. Blessed with a spectacular view and shady trees, this is a good location for picnics.

The nearby historic All Saints Church is worth a stop to see its outstanding stain-glassed windows.

Overlooking the sugar-cane fields of St. Lucy is the original home of Mount Gay Rum, where it all began back in 1703. Book a tour of the fully operational Rum Distillery and enjoy over 300 years of heritage, while sampling Mount Gay’s finest products.

On the north-west coast you’ll find picturesque Archer’s Bay, with Catch-22 Restaurant located nearby at Sunset Point. This is a good stopoff for a fresh fish lunch and guided sightseeing hikes to Stroud Bay and Harrison’s Point.

Animal Flower Cave is located on the stunning north coast of St. Lucy, where wild sea pounds steep cliffs. Explore the cave’s huge chambers with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. The clifftop restaurant, owner run by Sue and Mannie Ward, has awesome ocean views.

Two other areas of natural beauty on the north-east St. Lucy coastline are Little Bay, with its spouting blowholes and incredible rock pools at low tide, Cove Bay which used to be a fishing port in the days of sail.

St. Nicholas Abbey in St. Peter, built in 1658, is a showpiece of Barbadian heritage. Ownermanaged by the Warren family, St. Nicholas produces an excellent range of fine rums, local liqueurs and other treats made from their own sugar cane. Rum Experience Tours need to be pre-booked, but Simon Warren is usually on hand for an entertaining rum tasting session. The Heritage Railway offers train rides several times daily.

Over in St. Andrew, Morgan Lewis Mill is one of only two functional sugar windmills in the world. It was gifted to the Barbados National Trust by its owner Egbert L. Bannister for preservation as a museum.

Animal Flower Cave

“A must see for the adventurous.” A natural wonder of Barbados not to be missed. Located at the most northerly tip of the island where the coastal scenery is spectacular. The name historically comes from the many sea anemones that were present when the cave was discovered in 1753. Waves permitting, you can have a swim in the natural rock pool. The view from the naturally formed ‘windows’ out to the sea and the pounding surf is simply awesome, so don’t forget your camera.

A visit to Arlington House Museum provides an insight into this old port town’s role in Barbados’ sugar industry and the brisk trade it once had with England. Just next door to the Museum, art lovers can enjoy browsing around the impressive Gallery of Caribbean Art located on the upper floor of the shopping centre.

A little inland from Speightstown, Haymans Market has been innovatively transformed from an abandoned sugar factory into a wonderful multipurpose facility, offering a diverse range of market and retail shopping, French bakery, childcare facility, dining options and entertainment areas. Go back down the way you came and head on into the quaint seaside village of Bathsheba. The middle of the bay is ‘Soup Bowl’, a favourite spot with top surfers from around the world! Round House offers an equally enjoyable view and lunch. Driving uphill out of Bathsheba, passing the left turn to Atlantis Hotel, you will find the Barbados National Trust’s Andromeda Botanic Gardens, encompassing some 6 acres of tropical gardens with exotic flowers, plants and trees from around the world.

High above the east coast on the ridge of Hackleton’s Cliff, the multifaceted PEG Farm & Nature Reserve is a good option for viewing their environmental projects and the farm, going for walks with spectacular views of the entire east coast, or enjoying the tasty organic breakfast and lunch served by the Farm House Café.

From here you can take an adventurous drive further down the coast, stopping off at historical architectural gems like St. John’s Parish Church and Codrington College, both of which command wonderful views of the coast; or turn left downhill to visit quiet seaside locations such as Martin’s Bay and Bath.

The Barbados Hiking Association came about as a result of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the Barbados National Trust. Hikes are held on Sunday at 6am with 4 different levels or 3:30pm with one level. Once a month the afternoon hike is 5:30pm to take advantage of the full moon. There is also a hike for beginners on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm when you are asked to bring a torch light.

The BHA President is Sandra Nurse but Rafael Gibson, a founding member and respected hike leader, can be reached to supply information on planned hikes. Historic Bridgetown & its Garrison

By the 1690’s, Bridgetown was one of the two largest English port cities in the Americas. Today, this once bustling hub of sea trade is a picturesque careenage and bay filled with pleasure boats. Nevertheless, the historic architecture is still very evident throughout the city which retains a legacy of character and charm.

In June 2011, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison joined the ranks of iconic global landmarks as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery are closed for restoration and maintenance until further notice, the Parliament is still offering very interesting guided tours of the hallowed chambers of the Senate and Parliament when not in session.

There is plenty to explore in the Garrison Historic Area where sturdy but elegant Georgian military buildings surround one of the oldest racetracks in the world. Based in the splendid old military prison, the Barbados Museum depicts the island’s rich and fascinating history, including its African heritage. Children can use a state of the art interactive gallery.

George Washington only once ventured out of America and that was when he visited Barbados in 1751. The house he stayed in has been renovated as The George Washington Attraction. Open 7 days a week from 9am until 4pm,

the museum tour includes an interesting film about Washington’s visit, as well as a chance to explore the recently rediscovered network of ‘secret’ tunnels running beneath the Garrison. There are over 80 really lovely beaches in Barbados, encompassing the full gamut of types and conditions. Going in search of them can be great fun. Here is some guidance as to which beaches we suggest for snorkelling, surfing, picnics or just liming at a beach bar. A Few Words of Caution

• Barbados is only 13 degrees north of the equator, so be sure to use a sunscreen with a high protection factor and reapply regularly.

• When snorkelling, always take a brightly coloured buoy/float so that you are clearly visible to water craft – these are available from Fisherman’s Corner at Carters General Store on the Harbour Road in Bridgetown.

• The east coast is notorious for dangerous currents and there are no lifeguards on duty. Other coasts can also have rip tides in places, so please be cautious and look out for red flag warnings.

• Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk) found along the west coast beaches. The tree and its small green ‘apple-lookalike’ fruit cause severe blistering. scan to learn more

Try these beaches for snorkelling ...

carlisle bay, st. michael

The Carlisle Bay Marine Reserve is a haven for snorkellers with six shipwrecks quite close together. Turtle tours are popular. Umbrellas, sun loungers and facilities can be found at Harbour Lights and Lobster Alive along with drinks and great food. For something different, most mornings between 6am and 9am, grooms from the Barbados Turf Club take race horses swimming off the beach between Radisson Aquatica and the Hilton. The greatest number swim on Sunday and few swim on race days. batts rock, st. michael

The swimming conditions here are wonderful with good snorkelling at

either end of the beach. Plenty of shade, parking and public facilities.

The best snorkelling in this busy west coast area is off the secluded beach at the southern end of the Holetown boardwalk.

The snorkelling in this protected area is very good, and safe due to restricted water craft. Parking, public facilities and a shop (open Mon-Fri) that sells snorkelling gear.

thunder bay, lower carlton, st. james

A large area of beautiful reef, particularly at the southern end, which stretches quite far off shore. Chairs, umbrellas and refreshments available.

Barbados has an excellent range of surf breaks. Apart from Soup Bowl, which is pretty much surfable year round, most of the surf breaks in Barbados are seasonal.

‘Soup Bowl’ is a famous surf break with local and international surfers. Due to strong currents and heavy waves, this location is for more advanced surfers. Atlantis Hotel

This famous surf spot is ideal for beginners - a great classroom. Most of the surf instructors begin their lessons here.

Whether you’re packing up your own picnic or having your hotel or villa staff prepare one for you, a picnic at the beach is always fun and relaxing.

bath, st. john

This long breezy beach has plenty of shade, shallow swimming and a nice coastal walk. Public facilities and good parking.

gibbs, st. peter

Parking is a bit tricky. Most people use a side-road with quite a long walk to the public access - but it’s worth the effort.

heywoods, st. peter

A long stretch of beach north of Speightstown, with lovely swimming, good parking and the Caboose Seafood Boat.

miami beach, christ church

This popular beach has plenty of shade and two distinct swimming areas, one with medium size waves and one quite calm.

bottom bay, st. philip Surrounded by coral cliffs with coconut trees and a cave, accessed via a long, steep flight of stone steps. With large crashing waves most of the time, only strong swimmers should venture into the sea.

bathsheba, st. joseph

There is not much shade, so umbrellas are necessary, and the swimming is limited to rock pools. Nevertheless, Bathsheba is still a beautiful and memorable picnic spot.

Try these beaches for liming at a beach bar ...

Sit back, relax and enjoy the beach. Order lunch, grab a noodle or some other flotation device and sip a rum punch floating in the sea under a nice big straw hat.

accra beach, rockley, christ church

The Tiki Bar serves delicious light bites that are ideal for enjoying whilst reclined in a beach chair. Excellent swimming for children. There can be dangerous currents at the boardwalk end of Accra Beach.

holetown, st. james

Calma Beach Club is perfect for cocktails on the beach with a cool vibe. The menu includes elevated Bajan classics as well as iconic bistro fare and decadent sharing boards.

carlisle bay, bay street, st. michael

Harbour Lights and Lobster Alive both offer drinks and very good

food with wonderful beach chair service. Harbour Lights also offer turtle tours.

crane beach, the crane, st. philip

This is one of Barbados’ iconic beaches. The Crane Resort’s beach bar, The Grove, offers delicious favourites off the grill, while drinks and coconuts are also sold by a couple of small enterprises on the beach. The swimming and boogie boarding here is generally safe and fun, but caution is advised. Nearby Cutters is the perfect stop-off point, with their popular rum punch and casual, delicious all-day dining.

speightstown, st. peter

Local & Co. is the ultimate ‘Farm to Table’ dining and drinking beachfront experience in historic Speightstown. Their Beach Smoke & Grill has a menu of housesmoked BBQ meats, tacos, ceviches and salads. Book a sun-lounger and chill all day.

Eating Out in Barbados

Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners, there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially between December and May, so reservations are highly recommended.

Sunset varies between 5:30pm in December and 6:30pm in June. An early evening reservation, sipping cocktails while the sun goes down on either the south or west coast, is a wonderful idea.

The quality of the restaurants in Barbados is superb, ranging from fine dining establishments to friendly beach bars and bistros, so visitors can enjoy a wonderful variety of dining options while on the island. Wherever you decide to dine, be sure to try the island’s fresh fish. A very good choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado, referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the beloved porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other recommended catches include Flying Fish, Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish. Shrimp here are usually very large and very good. Most of the beef served is very high quality US Prime.

SAFETY

Barbados is considered to be a safe place but always be as cautious as you would at home.

At the hotel: Avoid carrying large sums of cash; make copies of original documents; do not leave valuables exposed, secure them in a safe or at the front desk; remember to lock your doors.

On the beach: Marijuana is illegal, avoid persons who try to offer it or other illicit drugs to you. Avoid walking or frequenting lonely beaches; do not leave cameras, cell phones and other valuable items unattended; adhere to beach signs and follow the advice of life guards on duty.

When sightseeing: Avoid deserted areas. If you feel uneasy, leave the area.

When driving: Keep on the left side of the road; avoid leaving bags or valuables in plain sight in vehicle.

The sun’s UV: Barbados is close to the equator and the sun can cause severe skin damage, so be sure to use a good sunscreen and sit under an umbrella.

Sculpins: Although extremely rare, there is a rock dwelling variety of lionfish that gives a nasty sting when stepped on. Victims should seek medical attention.

Hiring a Car

Visitors must produce a valid driver’s licence in order to obtain a Visitor’s Permit which is usually issued by the car hire companies or online, https:// portal.bra.gov.bb/visitorpermit, from the Barbados Revenue Authority for BB$10 – it is valid for two months from the date of issue.

Driving Tips in a Nutshell

• In Barbados we drive on the left

• Seat belts are compulsory

• The roundabout system of lanes: when taking the first left exit off the roundabout you should remain in the left lane; when proceeding straight, take either lane and filter at the exit, all other exits off the roundabout remain in the right lane. At roundabouts always give way to traffic approaching from the right.

• The main ABC Highway runs from the Grantley Adams International Airport, parallel to the south coast and then to the west coast.

• Highways 1-7 all start in Bridgetown and branch out across the island.

• Highways A-Z are the smaller roads in between.

• When you hear the honk of a horn it has a variety of meanings. It could be a warning, a ‘hello’ to a passing friend, an ‘excuse me, I’m coming’ or a ‘thank you’.

• When someone flashes their lights at you at a junction it usually means ‘proceed, I’m letting you go first’.
