WELCOME Welcome to our eleventh year of InterAct Youth Arts Festival 2019 – brought to you by the Millennium Forum Theatre. This Festival is for young people aged 12-21 year’s old.

I am excited to host the Festival this year along with the Millennium Forum’s Youth Forum. As Education and Schools Marketing Officer we have a great relationship with the young people of our city and beyond. We are once again giving our young people access to the best arts facilitation and professional experience this city has to offer. This year we have a fully inclusive festival offering assistance for any additional need or carers for any workshop. If you would like to avail of this service please advise The Millennium Forum Education Officer when booking.

I would like to acknowledge and thank all those who helped make the ideas of the young people come to life! From funders to the dedicated Millennium Forum staff, and of course, the parents, guardians, teachers and facilitators, without whom, this festival simply would not be a reality. Stuart and Verity have over twenty years experience between them in the industry across theatre/film and TV having worked on shows such as The Bodyguard Musical, Guys and Dolls, Grease, Dirty Dancing and Flashdance in the West End and internationally. The focus of this fun masterclass is to give aspiring performers the tools to prepare for roles once in the industry. This includes acting and dancing with the emphasis to build your confidence and polish your performance skills in a relaxed, friendly environment. All levels of experience are welcome. We can’t wait to see you there.

Are you interested in learning how to write and perform stand-up comedy? Join comedian Peter E Davidson (as heard on BBC’s The Blame Game and Live at The Sunflower) for a series of fun workshops which will look at joke construction, performance tips and how to get started in stand up. Peter has written comedy for BBC NI, BBC Radio 4, 4 Extra and Radio Ulster and is the regular MC at Brickwork’s Laughs@TheLoft.

FRIDAY 5TH JULY 3.30PM - 5.30PM SHOWCASE SATURDAY 6TH JULY Participants will make imitation stained glass window decorations and mobiles to represent each aspect of the Interact festival. Our mobiles will be made from cardboard and coloured tissue paper.

Everyone from all ages can join in to help create and hang the window mobiles. The workshop focuses on making Art within a team of people helping each other.

A week of DJ’ing with Bounce Culture is all about you!! Your music, your mixes, learning skills that will allow you to find tunes that connect with your inner rhythm and future dancefloors.

Whether you’re DJ’ing for the first time, wanting to rock a party or start your own podcast, the Bounce Culture crew will show you how to select and mix the right tune, at the right time. With projects and parties reaching Africa and France, we’re up for sharing our worldwide DJ’ing experience with you. Controllers and software to CD decks and vinyl, all will be available for you to develop your skills or begin your journey as a DJ. The ball is in your court. Places are very limited so make it happen!

Back by popular demand is the duo of musical theatre experts Carie Logue Houston and Sinead Crossan with Musical Director Emma Barr bringing a wonderful mash up of original and new songs from Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns. The production team has a wealth of experience in teaching acting, musical theatre and dance. All three qualified teachers have experience leading pupils through graded examinations and school/college based accreditation in the arts from GCSEs to A- level and beyond across many exam boards. This year we are looking for energetic and hard working pupils to prepare for a live showcase of musical theatre. So, if you want to develop, perfect and showcase your skills in acting, dancing or singing, then this is the workshop for you!

9AM – 5PM THURS 4TH JULY SHOWCASE SATURDAY 6TH JULY We are hoping to attract the next generation to forge their new careers as sound and light engineers and give them an insider view of life in the Millennium Forum Tech team.

LIGHTING- Rory Harkin is an experienced lighting specialist who will deliver this hands-on course focusing on the purpose of lighting and the methods used by professionals in the industry.

Using state of the art technology in the Main Auditorium of the Millennium Forum, we will take a close look at the practices technicians and designers use to enhance a performance.

SOUND - John Brannigan is a sound engineer with extensive experience in the music industry. He will lead this course on essential in-depth theory on the principles of sound, acoustics and gain structure as well as explaining all about the equipment, components and settings used. There will be training on ‘patching in’ using the mixing desk, understanding and using EQ, noise gates, and compression.

Spend an hour unplugging from the world and learn how to bring peace and tranquillity into your life. Through gentle movement and breathing technique you will develop skills to cope with stress and anxiety, improve your concentration and increase your creativity. We will explore beginner yoga postures and learn how to use the breath to unite mind, body and spirit and gain an understanding of how to ‘not take ourselves so seriously’! Namaste

With the use of Makey Makey and Scratch technology participants will be introduced to programming retro games such as Pac Man and Space Invaders, while using bananas and other curious items to play these games on a large screen for audience participation. This workshop will cater for those who are new to this technology but advanced challenges will be set for those who come with some experience.

Stage Beyond is an exciting and progressive Theatre Company set up to deliver high professional standard theatre training for adults with learning disabilities. Throughout the year the company train in different styles and genres of theatre and stage.

Come and join us for a fun introductory 3 day workshop.

Emma is a graduate of the University of Ulster with a degree in Dance. She currently runs her own dance school, Emma Lindsay Dance, and is Franchise Owner of ((BOUNCE)) Derry and Bready where she is an instructor.

Emma has experience in various types of dance including Contemporary, Hip Hop, Ballroom and Latin American and has also been a Zumba Instructor for the past 8 years.

This workshop will be a few days of fun and creativity which will involve learning new dance styles such as Ballroom, Latin American, Contemporary and Zumba. The aim is to incorporate these dance styles into choreographing an EXPLOSIVE DANCE piece for a performance at the Showcase.

It will be a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills whilst working as a group, in a duet or as a soloist.

FRI 5TH JULY 10AM - 12NOON SAT 6TH JULY 12NOON - 2PM SHOWCASE SATURDAY 6TH JULY Taiko drumming is an exciting performance art style of drumming from Japan. It combines powerful rhythms and dramatic choreography, as well as solid team work and movement to express rhythms and energy which pull the spectator into the performances. Not only can Taiko provide an insight into Japanese culture and musicology but the sense of belonging, of achievement and of excitement created by performing in a Taiko group is totally unique and comparable to nothing else. Ibuki Taiko are the first group in the North of Ireland and have been sharing the taikolove here since 2010.

This Year Urban Shock Dance Company will provide a hip hop through the ages workshop. Hip Hop encompasses a wide range of performance expressions including graffiti, break dancing, DJ’ing, and rapping. Hip Hop first emerged in the early 1970s in NYC Burroughs and by the 1990s Hip Hop had become an internationally recognized cultural phenomenon largely due to the popularity of rap music. During the workshop we are going to learn about these different styles and matching them to the different music era. The workshop will include Breaking, Hip Hop, Foundations and Street Styles. This workshop will be suitable for dancers of all abilities from beginners to advanced.

He has performed at festivals, venues and clubs throughout the UK and Ireland. He is also the organiser of the annual Ulster Poetry Slam and one of the co-ordinators of the All Ireland Poetry Slam Championship. In addition to this, he organises poetry and other spoken word events at the Fermanagh Live Arts Festival, Omagh Literary Festival, the Gasyard Feile (in Derry) and Stendhal Festival. He curates a regular Spoken Word slot for BBC Radio Foyle (Mark Patterson Show) and also delivers a variety of workshops and masterclasses through various organisations, including Bluebell Arts, (Derry) Community Arts Partnership (Belfast but Northern Ireland wide) and the Obon Japanese Festival NI. He has also sporadically appeared in several plays, radio serials, TV shows and films: including Game Of Thrones and The Truth Commissioner.
