IS IT A SPORT ? BY: TIFFANY PRICE AND FAITH MONTGOMERY
A great controversy on whether or not color guard is a sport has been in play for years. On one side, those who don’t view color guard as a sport, question the amount of action involved in the activity. For example, because color guard isn’t a sport in the Olympics: like basketball, volleyball, and rugby; it’s argued that it shouldn’t be considered a sport. Additionally, color guard doesn’t have a set scoring system, giving more credibility to the “not a sport� side of the argument. Varsity Football player Eric Herd says, “I feel like it’s more of a structural performance, as opposed to a sport.
Looking from the outside, it doesn’t look like a sport, but maybe if it were more individual instead of a group performance, then maybe it would be more of a sport.� On the other hand, some believe it is a sport because it includes physical activity like running, jumping, and tossing rifles and flags. Soccer player Sam Rahinsky (11) says, “Color guard is a different form of sport because it takes dedication, skill, and athletic ability. Color guard girls are outside practicing hours on end over the summer and are constantly working to improve their skills. But, I could see how others wouldn’t view it as a sport since

there’s no ball involved or any extensive physical activity.” According to the Odyssey Media Group, tossing a rifle requires physical activity because the endocrine, nervous, muscular, skeletal, and respiratory systems all work together to throw a rifle or flag into the air. Mill Creek color guard member Janet Meador (11) says, “It’s a lot of exercise and competition; more than you think. It’s kind of like dance. We work harder than most people think; it’s not easy.” Additionally, there is more running involved in color guard than softball and baseball. Softball player Sophia Kemme (9) says, “I believe color guard is a sport
because when I go to football games I see them dance and sweat, and their routines obviously require a lot of preparation and practice.” As for athletic director Gary Long, he believes that color guard should be considered a sport. Long says, “I believe that when you have kids that are physically engaged, regardless of the level of physical activity, it should all fall under the athletics department. And, that’s because without it, I can’t require a physical, and don’t require one, and if you’re not in very good shape and you exert yourself physically, it could end catastrophically.”
