Letter from Bill Menard As we close the books on another record-setting year for Millbrook’s Annual Fund, I would like to thank each of you whose generous financial support made this possible. Once again, Millbrook School not only met but surpassed its Annual Fund goal, an accomplishment that sets us apart from many of our peer institutions. We are advancing our school together, building on the generosity and enthusiasm of our parents and alumni, whose level of participation is the envy of our peers. This year, ALUMNI PARTICIPATION WAS AT 26% OVERALL, AND PARENT PARTICIPATION TOPPED 91%, outperforming all but one of our competitors. This is a direct result of Millbrook delivering transformative experiences to

Letter from the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office In a year of economic and political uncertainty at home and abroad, MILLBROOK FORGED AHEAD AND ENJOYED A BANNER YEAR. We concluded the 2022-2023 school year with momentum and have set our sights on 2023-2024, which will be Millbrook’s 93rd trip around the sun. Millbrook School’s community stepped up this past year, and their generosity made all the difference for our students, faculty, and staff. Highlights include: • Last year our school received more than $8 million in gifts (we are already hard at work to ensure that the coming year will be the very best in the school’s history). • The 2022-2023 Annual Fund achieved our ambitious target of $2.425 million when many independent schools fell short of their budgeted goals—this is the largest Annual Fund goal achieved in the history of Millbrook School. We are sincerely grateful to the nearly 1,500 trustees, alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends who so generously supported Millbrook this past year. • The VIth Form Parents’ Fund, led by co-chairs Paul & Alysa Stafford P ’16 ’19 ’23 and Jamie & Lara Vitiello P ’23, inspired VIth form parents to band together and raise $400,000 to name the Anthony House terrace in honor of their graduates. • Our annual Giving Day was hugely successful. Gifts totaling more than $300,000 in Annual Fund commitments demonstrated the strength of our community. We would be remiss to not also share that in January the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office moved into Anthony House after working in temporary office space for five years. In erecting a welcoming center for alumni on Pulling Circle, we acknowledge the importance of our alumni body in the very heart of our campus. We urge you to come visit; you'll find us just between Pulling House and Prum Hall. Looking ahead, we count on the entire Millbrook family to partner with us and invest in our school and in our students’ futures. Millbrook is on the edge of possibility, and your active participation will make all the difference in the months and years to come as Millbrook continues to change lives and deliver on its mission. On behalf of our colleagues on campus, we thank you again for sharing your enthusiastic support for our school.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2023

Down School Road Close to 200 proud Millbrook alumni returned to campus to reminisce about their time at school and to make new memories with old friends. Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98 welcomed his classmates back to school for a celebration of their 25th reunion, and the Class of 2018, enjoying their first “official” reunion since their graduation, were loud and proud throughout the weekend. A significant number of graduates from more than 50 years ago were also in attendance.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2023

Members of the Class of 1973 gathered in Schoolhouse to share their recollections, 50 years later, of their time at Millbrook as part of the ongoing gathering of alumni oral histories. There were tours of campus and the Trevor Zoo, updates in a Q&A format with administrators, and plenty of time to reconnect with fellow Mustangs. Along with traditional Alumni Weekend happenings, two special events marked milestones that connect Millbrook’s past to its future.

Members of the Class of 1973 tour Pulling House

Opening Ceremony for Pulling House Tom Pulling, son of Millbrook’s founders Edward and Lucy Pulling, traveled from Florida to commemorate the completion of a new Pulling House, the “same, only better” as compared to the original farmhouse in which he grew up. Mr. Pulling and his three sisters lived in the original home and were among the earliest faculty children to grow up on campus. The original Pulling House was a Colonial-style farmhouse that existed on the property when Millbrook was founded. After serving as home to all Millbrook heads of school, the structure needed so many repairs that replacing the building entirely became the only real option. The new building will be instantly familiar to anyone who knew the original house, as Tom Pulling can attest. He fondly recalled school-wide gatherings in the original living room and spoke glowingly of the painstaking recreation of that space and his father’s study, now the home office of Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2023

A Dedication and Millbrook Medal for Mr. Millbrook Next door to Pulling House is Millbrook’s newest building, Anthony House, and among many highlights of 2023 Alumni Weekend was the official dedication of this space, complete with a ribbon cutting by Mr. Millbrook himself, Bob Anthony ’65. Bob’s family, friends, colleagues, and alumni thronged Pulling Circle, where the stately new building sits between Casertano Hall and a modernized Pulling House. Wielding a giant pair of scissors, Bob was joined by his wife, Ann, and their children, Arthur ’07, Mimi ’08, and Sarah ’12, to cut the ribbon and welcome the assembled to tour the building. As the new center for Millbrook’s Advancement & Alumni Relations Office, the building will also serve as a home for alumni returning for campus visits and events. Located on Pulling Circle, the focal point of campus, Anthony House was designed in harmony with Millbrook’s master plan and through the collaboration of our school’s longtime architect, Daniela Voith of Voith and MacTavish, and classical architect Gil Schafer ’80. The design is the perfect blend of function and form, comfort and class.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2023

Bob with some of his many dear friends, Millbrook former and current employees Drew Casertano presented the Millbrook Medal

Before heading off to lunch in the Class of 2018 room, scores of past and present faculty and alums raised a glass to Bob, who was also honored with a Millbrook Medal in a special tribute following the traditional Alumni Parade to the Flagler Memorial Chapel. Millbrook’s sixth head of school, Drew Casertano, spoke glowingly about Bob and his success in making and maintaining connections with the supportive alumni whose generosity keeps Millbrook moving forward. Anthony House, designed and situated as it is, completes Pulling Circle, the space that welcomes all visitors to campus…[In its naming,] Anthony House, we rightly honor one of Millbrook’s finest, Robert W. Anthony, Class of 1965. This is lasting recognition that Bob richly deserves, having served the school with distinction for 49 years. He’s contributed in truly profound ways to Millbrook’s progress and the bright future that lies ahead under the leadership of Jon Downs, Class of 1998. How far we’ve come, my friend, and how much you’ve contributed. We, and this school that you love so dearly, thank you. Modern Millbrook would be an impossibility without Bob’s vision, dedication, and, let’s just say it, charm. His belief in the mission of the school, originated by Founding Headmaster Edward Pulling and shepherded through years of tranquility and tumult, is unshakable. Thanks to Bob, the people who have come together to create this place are lucky to be able to do so while witnessing, in real-time, the future take shape. COMMENCEMENT 2023 Millbrook’s 92nd Commencement took place under azure blue skies as the community gathered to celebrate the Class of 2023. Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98 spoke glowingly and with true affection for the 83 members preparing to leave Millbrook better than they found it. Trustee Paul Stafford, proud parent of Henry, member of the Class of 2023, Mallory '19, and Alex '16, greeted the crowd and expressed his affection and appreciation for the Millbrook mission.

Every moment of every day, Millbrook School lives and breathes its mission statement, which hangs on the words known and needed. To me, knowing and needing is perhaps the best way we humans express love for each other…Shamelessly share the love you were given here and wear your Millbrook hats and hoodies proudly. Tell anyone and everyone what your school is all about. Carry Millbrook with you every moment of every day and walk through this world and through your lives with compassion and love.

COMMENCEMENT 2023

Beloved educator and longtime faculty member Nancy Keller-Coffey P ’13, ’14 spoke of her inspirations and first teaching position in the Peace Corps in the south of Thailand before exhorting the class to go out and make a difference in the world.

You have the power to improve human progress…Use your energy and time to draw on the traits you have honed here at Millbrook—grit and grace, responsibility and resilience, flexibility and fortitude, character, confidence, and connection. Be brave. Change the world. Ignite a new generation of idealism and know that this teacher, who is so proud of you and so honored to have been a part of your Millbrook years, will be waiting to hear about your future accomplishments.

Nominated by his classmates, Liam Kennelly delivered the Sixth Form Commencement Address, poking gentle fun at the admittedly unique people, events, and traditions that make Millbrook, Millbrook and lauding the power of the Millbrook community in embracing personal differences.

If you let go of the expectation of trying to be someone or something and just get outside of your comfort zone with no judgment, you will grow. The expectation and pressure we put on ourselves rids us of the ability to evolve and try new things…Millbrook is a place that consistently fosters uniqueness and being different. The reason why I have loved my experience here is because you are allowed to be yourself.

Mr. Downs then bestowed four special Commencement Awards: Casertano Cup to Alec Enchill and Avery Miller Edward G. Allen Sportsmanship Cup to Alexander Fraser Community Service Cup to Hannah Coon, Nathan Rebello, and JD Whiting Summa Cum Laude to Zhixin Li

Members of the Class of 2023 began their Millbrook careers during a pandemic and rode waves of uncertainty and chaos, facing uncommon challenges. By embracing the unknown, they worked with each other to build character, resilience, and fortitude and leave an indelible legacy on Millbrook.

John Almazo COLGATE UNIVERSITY My experience at Millbrook proved to my parents and myself that I can handle almost any challenge that I take on or that is sent my way. Living away from home was a totally new thing for me that I had to learn to do. Millbrook prepared me for every part of that, so I’m not worried about being away at college. At Colgate, the classes will be bigger, and I will have to work to stand out. Being awarded the Founder’s Prize as a Vth former made me feel acknowledged and recognized at Millbrook. The faculty knew me well enough to know that I could be a leader, and I will never forget my summer experience thanks to winning that honor.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT: John cares about his own performance, but John cares deeply about the well-being and success of his peers. What makes him special in any learning environment is that he celebrates when others make great contributions, and he recognizes that he can learn just as much, if not more, from his classmates than he can from his teacher. – Luke Westman

Zhixin (Lucy) Li UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA So many things were eye-opening for me at Millbrook, and choosing UVA for college is absolutely the right next step. As an international student, the community support and my friendships made all the difference in my experience. I also gained confidence in my ability to be independent and to make big decisions for myself. Academically, my interest in neuroscience started at Millbrook and was informed by science faculty who demanded that I conduct experiments with precision and accuracy. I had to commit to presenting my research in precise, college-level lab reports. The size and diversity of UVA will provide myriad opportunities for me to pursue the extracurriculars that rounded out my time at Millbrook. I love to dance and can’t imagine NOT dancing. My Millbrook classmates always cheered for me and gave me the confidence to perform; I’ll remember that feeling every time I dance in front of others.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT: On a team of academic all-stars, Lucy Li is one of our starters. In her time at Millbrook, Lucy has taken pride in her language learning and ability. In sciences, her lab report writing is technical and clear. In English, she continues to discover her personal voice. Her research report about blue screens and eye floaters was published in a scientific journal. She has earned a NASA Future Engineers Award. Lucy wants to learn. She sets a standard of excellence for our community. – Zhaohong Wen

Aaliyah Almeida CLAREMONT MCKENNA COLLEGE Claremont McKenna has a phenomenal economics program, and that will be my major with a minor in finance. The academic opportunities and the amazing internship programs were the biggest part of my decision to go all the way across the country and try something totally new. At a program called Spring Preview, accepted students get a chance to visit, spend the night in a dorm with a current student, and get a feeling for what it would be like to actually go to Claremont McKenna. My visit totally sealed the deal because I realized that at Millbrook I had already learned a lot of the social and personal skills I would need in college. I plan to focus on my studies right away. When I first came to Millbrook, I wasn’t exactly shy, but I felt like I had trouble connecting with students from different backgrounds and kind of struggled with that. Millbrook has allowed me to get to know people around the country and around the world, and my transition to college life will be smoother because of that.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT: Aaliyah has challenged herself with her course load, including in her senior year taking AP Spanish, Advanced Biology, Advanced History, and an independent study in ceramics. She came into Millbrook as a strong student who took academics seriously, and she continued to grow and develop her thinking and writing skills in her four years here. Perhaps a trait that will take her farthest: she is not afraid to challenge the ideas of her peers, and she is prepared to support her position. – Lindsay Peterson

Beth Najork TULANE UNIVERSITY Tulane offers strong academic programs and felt like a welcoming environment with kind people; both were things that made me love Millbrook. As a community, Tulane seems to have a lot of school spirit and be a center for culture in a city that already has an amazing amount to offer. Nate Rebello DARTMOUTH UNIVERSITY The mix of independence and collaboration has been a really important part of my experience at Millbrook. I was able to pursue my interests through independent studies even while keeping up with my other coursework. Dartmouth seems to offer a similar opportunity for that kind of learning, which really works for me. The many chances I had to actually collaborate with my teachers, especially in math and science, made me understand how important it is to seek out that kind of connection. I’ve already researched Dartmouth professors and learned about some of the interesting work they’ve done. Beyond schoolwork, I came to Millbrook to play hockey and had an awesome team experience. I’m going to play club hockey at Dartmouth but will also be working hard to get better and see how far I can take it.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT: Nate impressed me as a student from the day I first met him over Zoom to the day he left campus. He took all of his assignments seriously and put forth nothing but his very best. He persistently demonstrated a deep care for other people, something that regularly showed in the projects he gravitated towards. – Joe Raciti

Will Zelevansky UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA I’m attending USC because of the amazing resources and opportunities that come with going to a huge university in a major metropolis like Los Angeles. I know it will be a big change from Millbrook, from class size to the weather, but I’m excited to become more independent and to leverage the resources at USC. Connections with Millbrook faculty helped me to discover interesting, important, and wide-ranging ideas, and I’m going to continue on that path of discovery in liberal arts at USC while also creating and studying music, both vocal and instrumental. I have been inspired by intense written work at Millbrook.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT: Will’s laid-back demeanor belies an insatiable curiosity and a refusal to accept anything less than the most refined, most interesting work he is capable of. His ear for timbre and texture and his chameleon-like ability to write in a wide range of styles will allow him to pursue any musical path he chooses. – Brian Coughlin

Mikayla Vitiello BATES COLLEGE Bates offered the perfect mix, and the people I met there seemed genuine, earnest, and kind. I plan to major in English, which is a very strong program at Bates, and I also intend to maintain my other interests, especially art. At Millbrook, having my own dedicated studio space meant everything to me, and I spent a lot of time there. The structure of this community helped me to get organized and still have time to do things that were fun and rewarding beyond classwork. Besides teachers who fully engage with their subject matter, my advisor, Ms. Whitehouse, truly guided and supported me every step of the way and was a huge part of my success in high school. Personally, I’ll never forget just hanging out in the Abbott common room with teachers and students, just laughing and being together.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT: Mikayla is the kind of intellectual who can lock herself inside another world and discover places unknown through her own introspection, but she is also the kind of intellectual who talks through ideas a mile a minute and encourages her peers and teachers to think differently. A force to be reckoned with in the classroom, her curiosity is infectious. Mikayla’s ability to be present in the moment speaks to her authenticity and sense of self. – Eve Whitehouse

Liam Kennelly TUFTS UNIVERSITY I was recruited to play basketball at Tufts, and it really is a perfect fit for me both on the court and in the classroom. The balance between athletics and academics is ideal for the kind of student-athlete I have been and hope to be. Tufts, a Division III university, is a big step up in size from Millbrook, but as soon as I set foot on campus and spent some time around the basketball team, I could sense that it was a similarly tight-knit community. It wasn’t immediate for me at Millbrook, but I got better at introducing myself to new people, trying new things, and connecting with people of all kinds and interests. Millbrook was a great training ground for me to understand how important it is to connect with teachers, to show them that you care and that you’re willing to work hard to learn from them. Thanks to Millbrook, I’ll be doing that at Tufts right from the start.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT: Liam embraces routine, consistency, and working his tail off. Liam’s academic talents do not come naturally. He is not a flashy student, nor is he the most naturally gifted student in the classroom. That said, he is likely the hardest working student in the classroom. Liam committed to working every day, holding himself accountable, and outworking everyone else, and it’s safe to say that the results speak for themselves. – Eve Whitehouse

Aaliyah deftly outlined the historical roots of the conflict and connected past events and decisions, largely intended to benefit American financial interests, with the epidemic of criminal gang activity and the immigration crisis that persists across the Americas.

HANNAH COON

AN EXPLORATION OF CERAMICS THROUGH DIFFERENT INSPIRATIONS Hannah’s CES was a product of her yearlong independent study in ceramics. After producing award-winning work as she moved through Millbrook’s ceramics curriculum, Hannah sought to explore new techniques and mediums in an independent study. She learned along the way that the freedom of independent work must be accompanied by enough self-discipline to be productive. Hannah’s resulting pieces were personal and revelatory, demonstrating skill and commitment to creativity.

REINVENTING THE MILLBROOK TIKTOK During his boarding school search, Eric sought the most authentic, student-generated perspective on life at the schools he was considering. His takeover of Millbrook’s TikTok was a fulfillment of that desire, yielding fun and informative videos of everyday Millbrook student life. Over his two months at the helm, Millbrook’s account grew from 400 followers to nearly 9,000, with multiple videos getting millions of views. Eric’s engaging posts have resulted in many inquiries from prospective students.

REMY KALMBACH

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF HUMANANIMAL INTERACTIONS IN A ZOO ON BOTH PARTIES The Trevor Zoo drew Remy to Millbrook, where she was able to channel her lifelong love of animals into several fields of study. For her CES, Remy examined benefits of human-animal interactions by surveying students before and after their time spent with Trevor Zoo ambassador animals. She analyzed their stress levels via chemical analysis while also evaluating general feelings of stress or anxiety through in-person interviews. Remy identified the benefits of interaction for both parties and encouraged students to make the most of their access to animals at the zoo.

THE INEVITABLE MILLBROOK: Retelling the Last 30 Years Charlie researched and wrote a brief contemporary history of Millbrook School with a focus on the last 30 years. Having interviewed 31-year head of school Drew Casertano and other veteran faculty members, he created an accurate and thorough accounting of the school’s growth, contextualizing the recent past and gaining insight from eyewitnesses to this transformative period. Charlie hopes to publish his work as a companion to the book written by Founding Headmaster Edward Pulling in the 1960s.

LUCY LI

DIGITAL SCREEN USE AND ATTENTION SPAN IN THE MILLBROOK COMMUNITY Lucy’s CES sought to identify the connection between time spent with digital screens and the ability to concentrate on other tasks. She presented her findings on the impact of digital screen use on sleep patterns, reading comprehension, and the neuroscience behind the habitual rewards-seeking behavior connected to unchecked excessive screen use. Lucy gathered data on sleep and screen time from Millbrook students and faculty, which began as an Independent Science Research project. After data analysis, Lucy concluded that screen time does indeed negatively impact concentration and focus among faculty and students at Millbrook. She further suggested a modified study hall schedule and increased awareness of the impact of digital screens on health.

MillbrookEngage Introduction by MillbrookEngage Program Director Trish Rexhouse

Founded in 2015, the MillbrookEngage internship program has become a part of the modern-day fabric of our school. The program is mission-centered, an embodiment of Millbrook School’s motto, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis, and core value of service. Since its inception, 79 students have participated in this unique program, serving not-for-profit organizations during the summer before their VIth form year. The program's significant growth by 171% in the last three years affirms its success and our students' commitment to service. This past summer, 19 students—the largest number in the program’s history—brought Non Sibi Sed Cunctis to various not-for-profits with a focus on social services, conservation, medicine, education, athletics, and more. Their MillbrookEngage experience concluded with an October Chapel Talk and celebratory dinner. Participating students, their parents, members from the organizations they served, and generous benefactors of this special program all came together, including program founder Herb Shultz ’63 who witnessed how his generosity continues to spread Millbrook’s mission of service.

CHRISTINA BELLIN Project Sage in Lakeville, CT Christina interned with Project Sage, a non-profit focused on ending relationship violence, and after successfully completing an intensive 20-hour training course, she helped create lesson plans for 7th through 12th grade classes, delivered food to clients in shelters, and aided Project Sage’s court advocate with police reports. “I learned how important even small acts of service can be,” said Christina. “Many victims of domestic violence are in such intense and chaotic situations that just a smile, a glass of water, or an encouraging word, can make their day much better. I learned that service is not just about your physical actions, but it can be about your presence.” Recognizing how Millbrook could benefit from Project Sage programming, Christina brought the organization to campus to work with faculty and students.

JULIET DRURY Dutchess Land Conservancy in Millbrook, NY With an interest in environmental economics and a deep connection to the Hudson Valley region, Juliet pursued her passions while serving her community at the Dutchess Land Conservancy. She planned and executed educational initiatives shared at farmers’ markets, monitored preserved land, scouted trails, created environmental fact sheets, and curated ideas for social media. Supporting various departments within the organization provided an understanding of the hard work and attention to detail necessary for not-for-profits to thrive. “Whatever task we cooked up, Juliet executed with enthusiasm and curiosity, making a deep and lasting impression,” said Dutchess Land Conservancy President Becky Thornton.

Alumni Summit 2023

CHAMPIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT Leading into Earth Week, in a year focused on our core value of stewardship, the inaugural Alumni Summit gathered twenty-one proud Millbrook graduates and a former Trevor Zoo veterinarian who have brought their Millbrook values to study and work well beyond School Road. Students and faculty were treated to presentations by guests throughout the day and encouraged to ask questions and connect with alumni living exciting lives of meaning and purpose. The community gathered for a morning keynote from Rob Bierregaard ’69, whose passion for the natural world began at the Trevor Zoo and his interest in birds of prey led to his becoming a falconer. Rob met Dr. Thomas Lovejoy ’59 at Yale and became Lovejoy's first field director of the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments in Manaus, Brazil, followed by stints with the World Wildlife Fund and the Smithsonian Institution. He taught ornithology and ecology as a distinguished visiting professor at UNC-Charlotte for 18 years and authored an awarded children's book, Belle's Journey, that tells the story of a young osprey’s first migration to South America. Rob engaged the audience by connecting his Millbrook education to a distinguished career as a scientist, educator, and steward of the natural world. Wildlife veterinarian Hollis Stewart delivered the afternoon keynote address. She

spends most of her time in the field saving sick and dying wild animals. Hollis served the Trevor Zoo as an attending veterinarian from 2012-2013 and inspired students and zoo staff alike. She has traveled the world, rescuing cheetahs with Dr. Laurie Marker in Namibia and conserving panthers with the Florida Panther Project. Hollis encouraged students to embrace adventure and take chances, showcasing her adventures with captivating images. Students attended four sessions of the 20 alumni summit presenters, who were fanned out in spaces across campus. Every session included Q&A time and deep dives into how their individual Millbrook experiences led to their singular experiences and careers. The day unfolded just as Rob Bierregaard ’69 said in his opening remarks that it would, “We are here to help you make connections.”

KEITH DEL VALLE

Gianna Muscari was well known as a community leader and tri-varsity athlete as a Millbrook student and an active reunion weekend volunteer during her subsequent years in college. A proud member of the Class of 2015, she returns to campus now as a full-time associate director of admission. From 2019-2022, Ms. Muscari taught English at Williston Northampton and served as girls varsity lacrosse head coach, advisor, and dorm parent. Leading the Way: People Who Make Millbrook, Millbrook Introducing Millbrook’s Newest Board Members

J’NELLE AGEE ’06 Elected May 2023

Upon graduating from Millbrook, J’nelle earned three degrees—a bachelor’s degree in economics from Spelman College (a historically black liberal arts college for women in Georgia), a master’s degree in sports management from Columbia University, and a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. In 2015, J’nelle began her career in media planning and then turned her career focus to journalism. She took her talents to Spectrum News, starting as a multimedia reporter based in Kingston, New York. A few years later she worked briefly in a similar role for Verizon Fios’ 24-hour news channel in Westchester County before joining NBC Universal in Dallas, Texas. There she began working behind the camera as an assistant producer, realizing the satisfaction of controlling the stories and narrative rather than simply delivering them. A role with MSNBC brought J’nelle back to New York, and for four years she produced shows for MSNBC Dayside, NBC News Now, and The Today Show. In June of 2022, she was thrilled to accept a position as senior producer at Oprah Daily, where she produces content on how to live a more meaningful, wholesome, and healthier life. J’nelle is also very involved in professional and social organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and The Links, Incorporated. One of J’nelle’s new passions is volunteering at the newly built Tommie L. Agee Campus (M.S. 419) in Queens, New York, which was named after her father, New York Mets Hall of Famer and 1969 World Champion, Tommie Agee. J’nelle remains a very active Millbrook alum and has been a driving force behind outreach and activities for Millbrook alums and current students of color. In joining Millbrook’s Board of Trustees, she hopes to expand her impact on Millbrook’s programs as a member of the board’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee: “Millbrook’s mission is about making sure kids feel like they belong, and that is exactly what we’re doing with the alumni/student barbeques we have been holding in the fall and spring at Millbrook. We have a BBQ, we play games, we put on music…It’s a safe place where kids feel comfortable sharing experiences. I’m looking forward to expanding the work that I’ve already done on this in concert with other board members.” J’nelle is proud to be one of the youngest members of the board, along with her good friend and classmate Alison J. Marsal '06 with whom she will work on the board's Student Life Committee. J'nelle is looking forward to getting more alums involved in the future growth of the school while learning about school governance and what goes on “behind the scenes.” She credits Millbrook with being a big part of her development and loves how the campus is opening its doors to new ideas and voices to continue to spread the message of Non Sibi Sed Cunctis.

LEADING THE WAY

ALISON J. MARSAL ’06 Elected May 2023

A political science major and economics minor at Bates College, Ali’s Millbrook interests manifested themselves in clear ways at the next level. Ali followed her brother, Jon ’03, to Millbrook, and immediately felt at home in Guest House. After studying Middle Eastern history with Mark Clizbe in her VIth form year and writing her Blaine Essay on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, she took that subject matter forward at Bates and studied abroad in Israel. Her 100-page honors thesis at Bates was an evolution of her Blaine Essay, with a refined and clearly developed understanding of the issues identified years before. Landing at Pricewaterhouse Cooper (PwC) after graduation, she joined the Healthcare Advisory Consulting Practice, working with providers nationwide on targeted performance improvement initiatives and cost-savings strategies. After four years, she moved to PwC’s mergers and acquisitions group, facilitating corporate integrations and divestitures in the retail and consumer space, with a focus on financial systems, processes, and best practices. After reconnecting with Michael Marsal ’06, friendly gatherings became dates which led to a marriage proposal in September 2015. Ali and Mike were married on September 10, 2016, and the growing Marsal family began thinking about putting down roots. By 2017, Ali was primed for a professional change and accepted a director role at A&M Inc., managing their privately-owned aircraft (both fixed-wing and rotorcraft), inclusive of crew, maintenance, financial reporting, logistics, and programming. During this time, she established the private aviation program for Hogs Head Golf Club in Ireland, offering bespoke private transportation services to club members and their guests traveling from the United States. Ali manages it all in addition to the farm that she and Mike purchased in Millbrook in 2017. In addition to producing hay, they manage gardens, beehives, chickens, cattle, and “joy animals,” (like their micro Highland cows), but it’s the simplicity and beauty that she appreciates most about the farm. Growing up, her family had a weekend home in Millbrook. Now, as a full-time resident, she is immersing herself in the community, as a member of the Millbrook Hunt and in multiple charitable organizations. On Millbrook’s Board of Trustees, Ali is excited to build a direct pipeline between the school and the community and to be a local resource for Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98. “I’m looking forward to having boots on the ground, giving my time, and being active on behalf of Millbrook School.” She will serve on the Physical Resources and Student Life committees.

DR. SAMANTHA BOARDMAN P ’24, ’26 Elected January 2023

Dr. Samantha Boardman, parent to two Millbrook students, Baker ’24 and Vivian ’26, is a New York City-based psychiatrist and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Boardman earned her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and her medical degree from Cornell University Medical College before completing her four-year residency in psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. While working in a private practice in Manhattan, she made the decision to expand her approach to mental health and study resilience, optimism, and post-traumatic growth. In earning a master’s degree in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, she explored the role of lifestyle and psychosocial factors that impact mental health and studied evidencebased interventions that promote well-being. Today, Dr. Boardman is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and currently serves as co-chair of The Positive Psychiatry Section for the World Psychiatric Association. She is the author of Everyday Vitality and founder of PositivePrescription.com, a site focused on positive psychology, human strength, and mental well being. Her work has been published in The American Journal of Psychiatry, The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Translational Neuroscience, and Nature Reviews Neuroscience. She is a frequent contributor to Psychology Today, The Wall Street Journal, and Thrive Global, and has been a guest on the Today Show and Good Day New York. Millbrook is one of several non-profit institutions benefiting from Dr. Boardman’s involvement as a trustee, and she joins Millbrook’s board with the goal of helping to move our school forward in substantial ways. Dr. Boardman loves Millbrook’s mission and mantra of knowing and needing every student on campus, and she sees how her own children have benefitted from the relationships they have developed with adults and peers alike. As a member of the Student Life Committee, she will actively support efforts to continuing and developing programs that allow every student to feel that they have a voice and a responsibility to create a positive culture at Millbrook.

A T R I B U T E T O A N A LU M N I T R U S T E E David D. Holbrook ’56, P ’82, ’83, GP ’11, ’12, ’14 David Holbrook died on May 14, 2023, following a long illness. A devoted Millbrook graduate and a longtime member of Millbrook’s Board of Trustees, David served on the board from 1977 until 2001, continuing as an honorary trustee until his death. During his tenure, he was vice chair of the board and chair of the Development Committee. He also served on the Search Committee, which recommended that Drew Casertano be elected Millbrook’s sixth head of school in 1990. David was the driving force behind the construction of the Holbrook Arts Center in 2001. He and his family gave the lead gift to make Millbrook’s wonderful arts building a reality, and it has served our school exceptionally well in the ensuing years. David graduated from Yale University in 1960 and spent his entire 40-year business career at Marsh & McLennan, retiring as CEO of their Insurance Brokerage Division. He served on the boards of the Theatre Development Fund, the Joffrey Ballet, The Orchestra of St. Lukes, City Center, The Joyce Theater, and The Noguchi Museum. In addition to his wife, Andrea, David is survived by his son, Christopher ’82, his daughter-in-law, Alice ’82, and their children: Cameron ’11, Ali Smith ’12 and Parker ’14. He is also survived by his daughter, Helene Downs (Bill), their two children, and three great grandchildren. David was predeceased by his first wife, Holly, and daughter, Lee ’83. David’s many contributions to Millbrook made an enormous impact on our campus and our program. As a member of The 1931 Society, his impact will be felt in perpetuity through a generous bequest helping to endow the Holbrook Arts Center moving forward. The Power of Partnership:

PARENTS AND ALUMNI FUEL FUNDRAISING SUCCESSES THE VITH FORM GIFT The evening before Commencement and just before their Senior Class Dinner, the Class of 2023 gathered in front of Anthony House with their parents and advisors to kick off their graduation celebrations. Anthony House, the new welcome space for alumni visiting campus, faces Pulling Circle. At the rear of the building is a beautiful terrace overlooking School Road the Trevor Zoo pond, and this gathering space is now named in honor of the Class of 2023. Once again, parent support for the traditional VIth Form Gift was robust with nearly 100% parent participation. As sparkling beverages were raised in a toast, VIth Form Parent Chairs Paul and Alyssa Stafford P ’16, ’19, ’23 and Lara and Jamie Vitiello P ’23 thanked all who had gathered in support of the Class of 2023 as they prepared to officially become Millbrook alumni. Jamie Vitiello shared his family’s gratitude for daughter Mikayla’s three years at Millbrook: “This has certainly been the greatest fork in the road in my child’s life. I’m so thankful for it, and I know she is so thankful too. Here, known and needed is a real, genuine, organic, and special thing. I see a lot of tears in the eyes of our children tonight…While it’s time for them to move into the next chapter of their lives, they will hold this experience so dear to their hearts.” Paul Stafford added his thanks to the VIth form parents while lamenting that his longtime role as a current parent was coming to an end: “Alyssa and I have been coming to Millbrook’s campus on a regular basis for 10 years now, as we chose Millbrook for three of our children. It’s a very bittersweet moment that this part of our lives is over now. Thank you all so much for your generosity, participation in this class gift, and helping us dedicate the Class of 2023 Terrace at Anthony House!”

LEADING THE WAY

GIVING DAY 2023 Millbrook’s Giving Day is designed to amplify generosity, celebrate philanthropy, and generate greater participation across the extended Millbrook family. Alumni were highly engaged, looking to win bragging rights for their class in this participation challenge; the Class of 2003 ultimately triumphed in the last seconds over a close competitor, the Class of 1991. Thanks to so many alumni, parents, and friends of the school, Giving Day 2023 made a tremendous impact through your collective gifts—large and small.

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

Over $300,000 raised for the Annual Fund

565 gifts received from donors across 36 states and 4 countries

Record alumni participation with gifts from 388 alumni

Thank you to everyone who joined us in "Pulling Together" for Millbrook's Giving Day 2023!

PARENT WINTER WEEKEND CHALLENGE January and February are no doubt the coldest and darkest months of the year on campus, and yet we regularly look forward to this time of year. Why? Winter Weekend, of course! Students look forward to this fiercely competitive and crazy colorful competition, and now parents do too. In its fourth year, the Parent Winter Weekend Challenge provides opportunity for parents to compete in support their child’s dorm. In this participation challenge every gift counts, and every gift makes an immediate difference. Parent gifts during the 2023 challenge totaled over $47,000, and ultimately Abbott Hall earned bragging rights for the greatest percent of parent Annual Fund donations, squeaking by Case Hall for the win.

Putting the Howard Telescope

FRONT AND CENTER 62

Millbrook School

PLACE

At Millbrook, students’ individual interests are fostered and encouraged to grow, and since 1931, the driving force fanning the flames of students’ curiosity has been Millbrook’s faculty. Many students have been drawn to astronomy and the study of the night sky, and the first teacher to guide those interests was Neale Howard, who taught science from 1945 to 1975. Shortly after Mr. Howard arrived on campus, Millbrook’s astronomy program took off. By the mid-1950s, the program peaked as students built both a large telescope and an observatory in which to house it. The observatory and telescope, which featured a 12.5” diameter mirror, were highlighted in a 1954 Scientific American article. Beginning in 1957, students participated in Project Moonwatch with the goal of observing the first man-made satellites launched into space, and they received national recognition for their efforts. Over time, the trees around the observatory grew, blocking the sky, and the telescope was abandoned. Modern equipment took its place, and a new observatory was installed on Ski Hill, away from trees and the lights of campus. A few years ago, the Howard Observatory was removed as it had become a hazard, but remnants of the telescope were saved. Alumni from the early 1970s, some of Neale Howard’s final Millbrook students, gathered during Alumni Weekend in 2022 and expressed great interest in honoring their mentor. Restoring the telescope and installing it in a prominent location on campus seemed a fitting tribute, and this group of alumni, led by Henry Rust ’71 and supported by a host of alumni from the early 1970s, fundraised to make the idea a reality. As the school’s archivist, I volunteered to shepherd this project, turning the telescope into a monument to Neale Howard with the goal of inspiring every Millbrook student who walks through the doors of the Hamilton Math and Science Center. The students in the Archives Community Service helped find old photos and articles about the telescope. Rhett Roback ’04, a local fabricator, designer, and machinist skillfully brought the telescope back to life. Within just a few months, Rhett not only restored the telescope to its original 1953 specifications and length, but he manufactured many parts that had gone missing over the years including indicator gears, the spotting scope, the eyepiece and more. He also designed, engineered, and constructed a suitable base for the entire apparatus, which weighs more than 500 pounds. Today, when you enter the lobby of the Hamilton Math and Science center, you are greeted by the Howard Telescope in all its glory—a towering tribute to a Millbrook faculty legend and the students whom he inspired. How fitting that Neale Howard’s is now among the pantheon of famous scientists whose names line the lobby walls. By Daniel Cohen ’86

FEELING THE WI-FI ON THE FIELDS Thanks to maintenance department all-stars Pete Lasko and Matt Smith, the Mustang faithful will be thrilled to find Wi-Fi connectivity at the lower and upper fields. Pete and Matt trenched, buried conduit, and installed the control boxes necessary for fiber optic cables to reach these far-flung spots. While it’s great to be able stay connected across campus, the added ability to live-stream field sports was an even greater motivator. Live hockey streams from Bontecou Rink have been a boon for alumni, families, and scouts, and now viewership of fall and spring outdoor Mustang athletic contests will surely become popular.

PLACE

SCHOOLHOUSE: NEW CLASSROOMS AND WORKROOMS The reconfiguration of the second floor of Schoolhouse is a historic step forward for a space that has been, over the years, the English faculty room, a computer lab, a classroom, and, for most Millbrook alumni, the Study Hall. For many years, the big room above the head of school’s office was the only space large enough to hold Millbrook’s mandatory daily study sessions. As they sat among the inscribed names of alumni, students were motivated to hit the books. As Millbrook’s needs have grown and changed, Schoolhouse has been renovated and improved multiple times. This summer, the engraved benches and framed plaques containing thousands of alumni names were carefully removed and safely stored for future display. As of September 2023, three bright and airy new classrooms and an office for the World Language Department have been carved out of the space opposite the Flagler Memorial Library. Another benefit of the second-floor renovation is the creation of new creative lab space within the Flagler Memorial Library that includes a 3D printer and a collaborative work and meeting space. By relocating World Languages to Schoolhouse, the humanities at Millbrook are once again under one roof, and the elegant 1940s building continues to define the quad with grace and a seriousness of purpose.
