As we look back on the 2023-2024 school year, we are honored to be part of such a vibrant, engaged, and generous community and are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of so many. Your generosity has allowed us to continue providing transformative educational experiences for our students, ensuring that Millbrook remains a place of growth, possibility, and promise.
This year’s successes were especially significant, as Natalie Smith completed her first year as Millbrook’s director of advancement, working alongside Robert Anthony '65 and Nancy Stahl, whose mentorships were invaluable during this transition. Under Natalie’s leadership, the Advancement Office was modernized and systematized, allowing us to serve our community with greater efficiency and effectiveness.
2023-2024 was a year of notable accomplishments:
• Annual Fund Success: We exceeded our ambitious $2.65 million Annual Fund goal, raising a record $2.77 million in support of Millbrook’s mission.
• Legacy Gifts: Our community's commitment to securing the future of the school resulted in $2.97 million in legacy gifts, strengthening our endowment and ensuring Millbrook’s continued success for generations to come. We are grateful to the Class of 1974 for championing this effort and raising over $1 million!
• Sixth Form Gift: Thanks to the dedicated leadership of our parent co-chairs, Tiffany and Chris Hatfield P’18, ’21, ’24 and Eliza Thorne and Mike Barnello P’22, ’24, ’25, the Sixth Form Gift exceeded its $400,000 goal to reach $445,000. Contributions by our VIth form parents will have a lasting impact on our campus and our students.
• Faculty and Staff Support: We are incredibly proud that 98% of Millbrook’s faculty and staff participated in this year’s Annual Fund, a true reflection of their dedication to our students and their belief in our school’s mission.
These accomplishments would not have been possible without the generosity and commitment of our entire community—trustees, alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. Your contributions are more than just financial support; they are a testament to your belief in Millbrook’s mission and future.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire advancement team, we extend our deepest gratitude for your support. We remain excited about what lies ahead; your continued involvement and partnership will play an essential role in shaping Millbrook’s future.
Sincerely,
William L. Menard ’78

Over three nights and two full days, Millbrook alums drove back down School Road to gather and reminisce, some for the first time in 50 years. Regardless of years between visits, friendships picked up right where they last left off as the Class of 1974 gathered at the Tamarack Preserve on the first day. The 50th Reunion Dinner brought together friends who see each other often and friends for whom seeing classmates happens over many years. But the memories of Millbrook were fresh, and dinner provided the perfect opportunity to share reminiscences and updates.
The next day, the 50th reunioners were joined by those celebrating their 25th reunion. The two reunion classes roamed campus on student-led tours, enjoyed lunch with Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98, and then assembled for dinner in the Class of 2018 Meeting Room in Prum Hall. The Class of 1974 also gathered in the living room of Pulling House that afternoon for their oral history, recalling stories from the Millbrook of 50+ years ago. It was an emotional time that prompted a few joyful tears.
To start the final day, a large contingency gathered in the Frederic C. Hamilton Math & Science Center for the dedication of the Neale Howard Telescope. An idea first suggested in 2008 by Dr. Alan Tousignant, the telescope restoration was jump-started by interested alums from the early 1970s who wanted to honor their former science teacher.
Millbrook’s Archivist Daniel Cohen ’86 shepherded this project, and Henry Rust and the Class of 1971 led the fundraising efforts for the restoration. The meticulous work of Rhett Roback ’04 brought the telescope back to pristine condition, thanks in great part to research done by Cohen and students in the Millbrook Archives community service. Alan, Henry, Rhett, and others, including Bruce Howard ’65, Neale's son, spoke to those who gathered.
Mounted on a solid platform in the entry hall where students pass by every day, the telescope serves as a reminder of the stellar history and bright future of Millbrook’s astronomy program.
Alums across generations joined former and current faculty and friends to hear Bob Anthony ’65, Millbrook's senior master, reflect on 50 years of service. In a packed Pulling House living room, Bob recounted many entertaining tales of visits with alumni over his five decades as Millbrook’s primary fundraiser. In typical Bob Anthony fashion, he recounted humorous tales of his experiences with alums and a few stories that some alums have shared with him.
The weekend’s activities culminated in the traditional Alumni Parade and gathering for the State of the School Address in the Flagler Memorial Chapel.
Just after class photos on the chapel steps, there was a special gathering in honor of former coach Mike Fuller. Coach Fuller was an inspiration to many student-athletes in his short time at Millbrook, and those who knew Mike well gathered with Gina and Zach Fuller by the turf field, where a tree will be planted in his honor.
Millbrook’s volunteer team is key to keeping our alumni connected to one another and to the school. We rely on your support to help plan reunion programming and successful off-campus events, gather class notes for the magazine, and meet our Annual Fund goals.
Generous alumni provide the energy that keeps our community strong and provides an exceptional experience for our students and faculty. Volunteering is easy and fun—and we are looking forward to working with you!
• Reach out to classmates and encourage them to share a class note in Millbrook's magazine.
• Inspire classmates to give back to the place they love. Be an ambassador on behalf of the school and the Annual Fund, and call, email, or text to get others to join you in giving.
• Help us bring Millbrook to you! Open your home or office to local alumni, families, and friends of the school—or host an event at a cool local venue. We’ll provide the party favors.
• Do you like to throw parties? So do we! Help coordinate your class’s reunion programming, encourage friends to attend, and ask your classmates to invest in Millbrook’s mission by making a gift to the Annual Fund in honor of your class.
Contact Caitlin Kiley, director of advancement operations, at ckiley@millbrook.org if you are interested in one of these volunteer opportunities.
It was a warm spring day under the big white tent as the community welcomed family, friends, and alumni to campus for Millbrook’s 93rd Commencement. With 98 students, the Class of 2024 is the largest ever to walk across the stage. As is Millbrook tradition, bagpiper William G. Moriarty led the class across Flagler Quad before Rev. Cam Hardy invoked the assembled to reflect on the day.
“…I invite us all, especially you seniors, to slow down, take a breath, take in everything that makes up this moment—everything and everyone who participates in your life. How does this make you feel? What words or thoughts come to mind? Hold onto these thoughts and feelings and then let them, collectively and individually, be your character description. Let your collective energy buoy us in this moment, and let it bring us one more flash of joy, humor, and pride. Because that is what we feel for you.”
Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98 then introduced Steve Rodgers P’24, ’25 to extend good wishes on behalf of the Board of Trustees.
“My words of advice to the Class of 2024 are that the return on investment of leaning into your community and embracing diverse perspectives is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your life when you leave here.”
Rabbi Darcie Crystal P’24, ’25 spoke affectionately about the community her family found at Millbrook and the opportunities afforded her children.
“You have accomplished much here at Millbrook. But more important than any math concept or literary genre you have studied, you have learned how to learn. You have learned to read critically, write articulately, analyze text, and formulate arguments. You have learned to consider all sides of a position fairly and to make your own judgments. I hope you have also learned to be curious and to ask good questions. This will make you a better student and one who will approach learning from a place of open-mindedness.”
Chosen by her classmates to deliver the Sixth Form Commencement Address, Sally Pinchot reflected on her years at Millbrook and the sense of joy and belonging that made her experience transcendent and transformative. She reminded students that graduating from Millbrook doesn’t sever their connection to the community.
“Millbrook will forever and always be our home, our community, and the space we will continue to be a part of for the rest of our lives. From [our time at] School Road, the Trevor Zoo, Schoolhouse, Casertano Hall, the Quad, and Pulling Circle, we have made memories. A piece of ourselves will be left in each of these spaces even after we leave.”
Four commencement awards were given to graduates:
Edward G. Allen Sportsmanship Cup: Givi Fleuristal-Muheto Community Service Cup: Querida Alleyne and Sarah Eagen Casertano Cup: Rayan Rustom Summa Cum Laude: Tianyu Chen
Mighty in number, Millbrook’s Class of 2024 left its mark in countless ways. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

Carnegie Mellon provides me with the opportunity to pursue my joint interest in science and art, and I’m excited about the relationships I’ll build and skills I’ll gain in college. Millbrook taught me how to seek help and take opportunities, and I will always carry that spirit of exploration and collaboration with me. Millbrook arts are the absolute best, and I already miss my Millbrook teachers, my Honors Art class, and my studio space!
If you have had a class with Tracy, she has probably helped you. If you have lived in a dorm with Tracy, she has probably helped you. This is the wonderful balance that Tracy embodies: as she hunts down problem-set answers and the perfect primary source, she exhibits steely-eyed determination and near Jason Vorhees-level silence. Simultaneously, the art and relationships she creates exhibit wistful beauty and deep care.

I want to pursue politics and journalism, so Georgetown's strong foreign service program and location in our nation's capital was the perfect choice. From the speakers they bring to campus to the events around DC, Georgetown has such an accessible, diverse range of perspectives. Excitingly, DC is also a hub for more than just politics, so I love the idea that these next few years grant me the freedom to explore classes and internships as I find my calling alongside peers who share my interests.
Millbrook taught me the importance of building small communities and connections within your larger bubble. Whether it was friends, classmates, or teammates, I thrived within the familiarity of Millbrook's community. Now, even at a larger school, I know myself better and can create an environment where I will be happiest. I’m entering Georgetown feeling so well prepared. Most of all, I am thankful for my Millbrook teachers who reshaped my worldview, both academically and personally.
In our classrooms, in the theater, in the dormitory, on the track, in our community service program, and as a friend, Madison was always generous with her time and her spirit. As a peer supporter and Hum Dev facilitator, as a theater director, student tutor, varsity athlete, and political activist, Madison was everywhere and executed everything flawlessly. She lives our school motto, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis, not for oneself but for all, in all that she does.
– Emily Allen
I matriculated to Northeastern because it is a city school with a strong engineering program, and I am excited about digging into classes and earning my degree in engineering. While I’m looking forward to city life, Millbrook was a perfect environment to learn and grow in high school. In my four years, I learned how to deal with the social challenges of being away from home. I loved the dorm culture at Millbrook, and I am really going to miss sports, getting hyped with all the boys and competing for my school.
Rio’s ability to assimilate and connect different ideas is truly remarkable, amazing even. But what we celebrate most of all is Rio’s eagerness to bring us along with him as he dissects and analyzes the world around him. He has challenged and energized his teachers in the best way, and, most importantly, he has encouraged and supported his classmates in their academic journeys. One year I asked Rio’s class to list classmates who were helpful to them during the school year. Rio’s name appeared on every list.

What excites me most about college is the sheer breadth of opportunities that Cornell offers alongside a strong network of mentors. Millbrook prepared me well for my next steps by helping me develop a strong work ethic and the ability to manage multiple commitments at once. My time at Millbrook also pushed me to be an independent learner, encouraging me to take initiative in subjects that interest and challenge me, and to seek help when needed.
In every course he has taken at Millbrook, Sam holds himself to the highest standards and demands the very best of himself. According to his teachers, Sam is a standout student who elevates the discussions in every single class, asking excellent questions that demonstrate his curiosity. If he doesn’t know something, he finds out about it. He is relentless in his pursuit of knowledge.
– Shannon Vollmer
I chose Amherst because of its rich diversity and inclusive campus environment. The school offers a strong balance between academics and athletics, which was very important to me. I am excited about my first season with the women's soccer team. They've won the NESCAC championship in the last two years, and it's such an honor to be a part of this talented group as we strive for another championship this year. Millbrook really prepared me for the time management required at college, especially in balancing sports, coursework, and extracurricular activities. I will miss the crazy bus rides to and from soccer and basketball games with the Millbrook girls, and I will also miss Ms. Havard's English class.
Abigail's individual skills and field of vision are what set her apart from many of her competitors. Her being selected to the WWNEPSSA All-League Team three times is validation of the kind of player she is.
– Gordie MacKenzie ’79
I wanted to go to Richmond because of how beautiful the campus is and how hardworking the students are.
I’m excited about the chance to study something I truly enjoy and give myself the opportunity to have a career in a field that interests me. Millbrook prepared me for college by teaching me how to be responsible. While I was there, I learned to be more independent and manage my time. I’ll miss the small school size and relationships I had with teachers.
Whether dissecting his last golf round or discussing his findings from his Independent Science Research project on the effect of blue light glasses, Lucas deeply cares about understanding and application. What I respect most about Lucas is that he flies a bit under the radar, continuing his tenacious efforts not because he wants the spotlight but because it is the right thing to do. This is also a testament to Lucas’ ability to balance his many endeavors beyond academics, and it is the reason I know he will have success moving forward.
– Ben Harff
Tufts is providing me the opportunity to be a part of another tight-knit community that encourages academic growth. My goals include meeting new people and discovering more about the world. At Millbrook, I learned how to manage my schedule, organize my workload, and collaborate with others.
I’ll miss many of the big school events like Winter Weekend and packed athletic events in the hockey rink and basketball court, plus being able to know everyone on campus.
I like to think of Rahim’s time at Millbrook as one of academic evolution. While grades were always important to him, as a scholar he had a clear progression and maturation. The thing that I truly appreciate most about Rahim is the way he seized opportunities and recognized that he could become the student that he said he wanted to be.
– Dave Whiting
I loved being in a small community at Millbrook, and now Cornell is offering even more opportunities, especially in animal science. Many kids going into college don’t really know who they are and what they want to be. Millbrook students get a lot of time to think about where they want to go in life. We’re away from our families, but we have the support of so many other adults who make a big impact on our experiences. Those deep connections with my teachers, coaches, and dorm parents, were really important. Millbrook faculty and my friends were my family away from home.
Sarah’s VIth form year really highlighted and brought out the best of her curiosity for knowledge. Her advanced classes have been conduits for her to pour all her energy into subjects. I have had the privilege of watching Sarah develop an upcoming podcast about lemurs for Advanced Biology, perform a study of the Trevor Zoo fox exhibit to learn about their nocturnal behavior for ISR, and create the most amazing paintings in Honors Drawing and Painting. Of course, her grades were wonderful, but the impressiveness of her transcript is in the breadth of areas she has excelled in.
– Kyleen Depew
A signature program, CES requires a commitment of time, effort, and introspection at the end of a student’s Millbrook career.
Twelve students received honors designations for their Culminating Experience for Seniors (CES) projects, which ranged from explorations of art and music to appreciations of the natural world and calls for social change. Many of this year’s awarded presentations took to heart the “culminating” element of the project in that they were long-considered and truly represented a journey of curiosity and growth.
A true arts polymath, Grace’s work has been seen and heard in Holbrook’s galleries and performance spaces throughout her three years at Millbrook.
Her CES was her creative version of a yearbook, including a quote, a Polaroid photo, and an original painting for each member of the class of 2024. In the waning days of her time at Millbrook, Grace sought to discover what was beautiful about her classmates while committing them to paper in a way that would create a lasting visual memory.
Connecting her skills in art and storytelling with complex themes and narratives, Tianyu created a visual novel that required her to push her personal limits.
Her visual novel is a first-person account of a teenage girl navigating a completely unstructured summer break in an industrial city in China. As she explores, the narrator encounters an unusual Shakespeare-reading contemporary perched in a tree. Paired with evocative images captured in Tianyu’s hometown of Chengdu, the narrative is unusual, intriguing, and engaging.
Christina’s CES continued a personal throughline as she worked to reinvigorate and grow Millbrook’s Model UN club.
As a highly engaged Model UN delegate in middle school, Christina sought to continue her involvement as a high school student, leading her to create a conference at Millbrook for invited local middle schoolers. Christina’s gathering drew students from two local independent schools and provided them with invaluable experience for their other upcoming Model UN conferences. In her MillMUN CES, Christina both paid it forward and back.
This honors CES was an interdisciplinary exploration of Ethan’s love of music, anime, and technology.
As the convergence of AI and art has opened new opportunities to create, Ethan fully embraced the tech, digitizing their own singing voice and creating a voice bank and an avatar able to perform songs in the synthesized voice. Ethan’s engagement with the online world of digital singing includes definitive databases and catalogs of the genre, and this CES merged passions discovered and pursued over four years at Millbrook.
SARAH EAGEN
Millbrook’s 800-acre campus encompasses forest, field, marsh, and mountain and is home to countless non-human beings.
Sarah’s CES, a trail map illustrated with paintings of her favorite wildlife, entices viewers to explore campus beyond the quads. An honors painter, committed zooie, and fouryear member of the cross-country team, her colorful map is a love letter to the land, creatures, and Millbrook.
Local flora and fauna were the focus of Zach’s CES, an informal survey of Millbrook’s natural neighborhood.
His contagious love of nature overspread the classroom as he shared his observations of butterflies, foxes, turtles, and ticks.
Zach’s work in the Trevor Zoo has undoubtedly enhanced his appreciation for local plants and animals beyond its walls and likely initiated a lifelong love of nature.
Kelly’s CES was an expansion on her Blaine Essay, which posed the question, “Should the U.S. provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented individuals?”
While her essay focused on a new policy's social and economic benefits through research and statistics, Kelly’s CES explored the human side of the debate through a series of interviews with local undocumented residents. Kelly’s interviews revealed the monumental difficulties of undocumented people struggling to live in America, from lack of access to social services to the fracturing of families on both sides of the border.
ANGELINA HUANG
Angelina’s devotion to piano music and performance has been a boon to the community at countless school gatherings in her Millbrook career.
Chopin’s Ballades are among the most beloved, though demanding, pieces in classical piano repertoire, requiring intensive study and commitment for mastery. A lifelong piano student, Angelina’s daily practice regimen was a non-negotiable part of her high school experience, culminating in her learning and performing the legendary Ballades as her CES.
When she arrived at Millbrook in 2021, Ava didn’t believe she had an “art brain” and wasn’t looking forward to fulfilling Millbrook’s arts requirement. An introductory art class changed everything when hands-on time in the ceramics studio became a passion and a respite from her intense academic schedule. Ava’s inspired CES melded her newfound passion for ceramics with her lifelong love of the Spanish language and culture. Focusing on ceramic styles from four Hispanic regions of the world, Ava researched the history and techniques of Aztec, Incan, Mayan, and Majolica pottery and created beautiful examples of each.
Ashley embarked upon the CES process by first looking back at her early days as a Millbrook student, which nicely framed the culminating nature of her project.
Ashley recounted her feelings of uncertainty in the lower forms and described the journey to self-confidence and self-assurance, which she reflected in the process of doing 24 new things during her graduation year. From changing a tire to becoming certified as a lifeguard, taking a polar plunge to registering to vote, Ashley gained skills and gathered experiences as she prepared for her next chapter.
CAMRYN WOODIN
Camryn’s intricate pencil drawings of the Trevor Zoo inhabitants showcase her artistic skill and ability to capture and convey the animals’ personalities.
Featuring a red wolf, lemurs, a marmoset, a tamarin, a red panda, an American Red fox, an otter, a cavy, and a very “judgy” emu, Camryn’s drawings encourage the viewer to pause and study the creatures. A Trevor Zoo head curator, Camryn’s love of animals is evident in her drawings, which have a depth beyond the page.
TRACY YIN
An honors painter, Tracy’s work often shows a stillness in things usually in motion. Using technology, her CES returned motion to some of her most successful paintings, including a goldfish in a pool of light-dappled water, a figure in front of the chapel, and, most evocative, a torrent of water rushing down the steps between the Holbrook Arts Center and Schoolhouse.
Tracy painstakingly returned movement to the scenes by animating her work: the fish swam, and water cascaded down the bricks. Tracy’s painting has been a meaningful part of her Millbrook experience, and her innovative reimagining of her work reveals the artist she has become.
MillbrookEngage is a key component of Millbrook School’s drive to prepare students for lives of meaning and consequence. Since its founding in 2015, this program has enabled rising VIth form students to live out Millbrook’s motto, Non Sibi Sed Cunctis, by interning at non-profit organizations in the summer prior to their senior year. To date, MillbrookEngage has connected 96 students to meaningful internship experiences.
This year 17 students participated in MillbrookEngage, making a difference through internships across the United States. From animal care to environmental conservation and social work, Millbrook students developed practical, world-bettering skills. This fall, program founder Herb Shultz ’63 joined participants, parents, and representatives of the non-profits in celebrating the positive impact of MillbrookEngage at a dedicated Chapel Talk in the Chelsea Morrison Theater and at the following formal dinner.

The 2024 Alumni Summit gathered 23 distinguished Millbrook alums for a day of engaging presentations on their lives since graduation. From Jed Diemond ’87 to Lars Heidenreich ’20, alums have thrived in academia, entrepreneurship, arts and entertainment, science and technology, and government. The diverse group of panelists were encouraged to craft presentations with our core value of curiosity in mind.
After a stirring performance by recording artist Anna Rose Menken ’03, students attended sessions selected according to their interests. The summit is a unique way for alumni to stay connected to Millbrook and give back to current students, who are inspired by what they learn. The alumni presenters volunteer their time and often provide contact information for students who wish to connect beyond the summit.
The theme of curiosity was writ large in the keynote address, delivered by past Miller Brown Health Center director Larry Atlas. A true Renaissance man, Larry has indulged his curiosities at every turn. Describing his path from U.S. Army drill sergeant to successful actor, playwright and screenwriter, software developer, skydiver, educator, and health professional, Larry suggested the incredible possibilities for Millbrook students committed to curiosity.
“It was curiosity, in a really concrete sense, that created the story of my life,” Atlas said during his address. “And those lines in my resume, so to speak, that’s not the story…it’s between the lines of your resume. It’s the people that you meet, the places you go, the restaurants you eat in, the things you discover when you work, and the collaborations that you have. All that is the story of your life.”

Chef & Owner, Little Egg
Raised by British parents in homes both in New York City and in Millbrook, she was exposed to various cuisines and cooking styles. Whether traveling abroad to visit friends and family or growing vegetables in the garden, food has always intrigued her. Post-college, she enrolled at The French Culinary Institute, and since she has worked in several NYC restaurants, started a successful catering company, and traveled the world cooking for clients. Eliza believes that we should all be curious about our food; knowing where it comes from and what goes into its production is as important as the flavors themselves.

Venture Scout, Go Ahead Ventures
Lars recently graduated from Elon University with a double major in entrepreneurship and project management. While at Elon, he created a mission-oriented coffee distribution company and web design agency. He also developed an app aimed at reducing the impacts of food insecurity in his corner of North Carolina—which he found himself presenting in front of Daymond John of Shark Tank. Now, he helps new businesses get their start, identifying and connecting high-potential startups with investment teams.
Handling every aspect of the boarding-student experience outside the classroom, the Student Life Office plays a crucial role in ensuring every student at Millbrook School is known and needed. To better fulfill that mission, the team shifted and expanded over the summer.
Last year’s dean of students, JJ Morrisey, has moved into a brand-new position as the dean of student engagement and wellbeing to facilitate increased engagement with students. In the past, with just two staff members, the Student Life Office was primarily reactive, dealing with issues as they arose. Now, the office has the bandwidth to be more proactive—especially in helping students push themselves to achieve their full potential. By adding a dean of student engagement and wellbeing, Millbrook joins the vanguard of independent schools that have sensed the need for deeper relationship-building with their student bodies and provided the necessary support. “That’s my job,”
JJ explained, “to make sure that we’re living up to our promise of knowing and needing every child.”
Following JJ's transition, Anna Birnbaum—the previous assistant dean of students—stepped into the dean of students role. She’s excited about the balance the team expansion will bring to the office and noted the importance of paying closer attention to students who might choose to fly under the radar. “To fulfill our mission, we needed more staffing,” she said. “And we needed someone focused really intentionally on the needed and known piece of our mission.” Anna has already made a big impact as the new dean of students by overseeing a significant change in student conduct expectations: the difficult but necessary elimination of cell phones from the academic day.
Assisting Anna is Eliza (Chapman) Pecchia ’12, who transitioned to the Student Life Office this summer from the Advancement Office. As the assistant dean of students & dean of residential life, she helps Anna manage student conduct procedures and run the student leadership program. The new role enables Eliza to work more closely with students, which is what she appreciates most about her work. While she thoroughly enjoyed engaging with other Millbrook alums in the Advancement Office, her goal has always been to impact the students—something she has done peripherally through dorm parenting and coaching varsity field hockey.
“My relationship with the other adults in the community is why I went into education when I graduated from college, and it was the ultimate reason I came back to Millbrook,” she said.
“I want to be that adult for Millbrook’s current students.”
Engaging with adults and academics is critical, but students also need space to be young and have fun. That's where Student Activities Coordinator Eric Kennedy comes in. Eric organizes weekend events ranging from shopping trips and fast-food runs to dances and movie nights, ensuring students balance their hard work with engaging leisure activities.
Millbrook’s Advancement Office leads the charge toward continuous improvement of our school. This essential team has undergone major changes lately due to the recent retirements of Bob Anthony ’65 and Barbara Gatski, who held 75 years of institutional knowledge between them. To fill those massive shoes, Director of Advancement
Natalie Smith recruited a talented group of industry-leading fundraisers from outside and within Millbrook.
Caitlin Kiley is Millbrook’s new director of advancement operations. She’s worked in various independent schools and was at Teton Science Schools in Wyoming before joining Millbrook. Her focus will be on enhancing alumni relations and fundraising. “Caitlin is one of the industry leaders in annual fundraising, so we’re excited to have her,” Natalie said. “She’s going to bring in best practices while formalizing, systematizing, and modernizing our office.”
The Advancement Office also welcomed Mimi Babcock P’06, ’09, ’12 and Keith Del Valle, who are focused on principal and major gifts. As the parent of three graduates, Mimi is devoted to Millbrook School. She brings a wealth of experience in parent relations and fundraising at independent schools, including the past seven years as director of parent programs at Salisbury and previous work in advancement at Kildonan and admissions at Indian Mountain.
Keith is not new to Millbrook, having worked in Millbrook's Colhoun Academic Center, the Trevor Zoo, and the Admission Office before moving to his new role. With a background in client development and business management, Keith hit
the ground running, visiting alumni, parents, and friends, in all corners of the country and around the world. He is focused on making deep connections with Millbrook constituents and sharing the school's ambitions for the future. In addition to his busy Advancement Office schedule, Keith takes over this year as the head coach of Millbrook’s varsity baseball team.
Rounding out the group of new Advancement Office faces is Cori Bloxsom, the team’s office manager. A long-time administrative assistant at Forman School in Litchfield, Connecticut, she’ll have a hand in everything that goes on at the Advancement Office. “She’s going to be crossing all the Ts, dotting all the Is, and making sure that all of our programs are supported,” Natalie explained. These new faces will help the rest of the Advancement Office build on the solid foundation left by retiring Millbrook icons. The team is dedicated to enhancing alumni relations through career content-based events, such as industry-specific networking luncheons, in person and via Zoom. They will also continue streamlining office operations and traveling to connect with alums and friends of Millbrook.
Millbrook’s Advancement Office plays a critical role in making Millbrook one of the top boarding schools in the country through relationshipbuilding and fundraising efforts. Nancy Stahl has contributed significantly to the office’s success over the years, joining as a major gifts officer in 2007, taking over as director of advancement in 2012, and then transitioning to become the director of stewardship in 2023.
This year, Nancy is on the move again, assuming the brand new role of director of philanthropy for the Trevor Zoo. In her new position, Nancy leads the zoo’s efforts to collect resources necessary to realize a bold vision for its evolution and expansion. When Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98 approached her about joining the zoo team, she told him there’s nothing more she’d love to raise money for. She loves the zoo, often bringing her grandsons for visits, and she’s energized by the many ways the zoo attracts and engages Millbrook students. Interestingly, when Nancy came to Millbrook, her first project was to raise money for the zoo. As a result, she feels like she’s come full circle in her career here.
Nancy has jumped headfirst into stewarding the zoo's progress, already securing funding from a local donor for a new holding facility that will ensure animal safety. She will lead initiatives to add more essential buildings, including a state-of-the-art medical facility, bring in new animals, and connect with an untapped network of zoo supporters. Major changes are coming at the Trevor Zoo, and Nancy will be in the middle of all the excitement.
“I’m thrilled,” she said of her role change. “It’s fun to be at the zoo and working on our vision for the future because it’s a great educational experience for me, the Millbrook community, and our many visitors.”
Board Member from 2011-2024
Rick is the proud parent of three Millbrook graduates: Erin ’00, Paul ’03, and Luke ’09. During his 13 years on Millbrook’s board, he served as treasurer, was a member of the Executive Committee, and deftly steered the Finance Committee with the school’s best practices at heart. Rick navigated the growth of our endowment and supported the largest capital campaign in the school’s history with financial prudence and thoughtful strategy. He was an advocate for sustainability and a strong voice in the planning and construction of our solar field. He saw the tremendous value of the work at the Trevor Zoo in educating students to be stewards of the natural world.
True to his nature, he is very humble about his impact as a trustee and a father. Of his time on the board, he shares:
“I have found over the years that what the experts in education tell us is true. When selecting a boarding school or college, it is not necessarily the name above the door of the institution that matters, but rather it is the relationships our children build with their teachers, coaches, and fellow students that create a foundation for a fulfilling life. As a parent of three alums, I am grateful for what Millbrook has meant to them, and personally, I have always received more than I have given.”
Board Member from 2019-2024
“Please do me one favor: never forget. Never forget how fortunate you are to have experienced life at Millbrook.” These introductory remarks were given by trustee Fritz Souder, father of Hattie ’22, at Millbrook’s 91st Commencement Ceremony.
Fritz is no stranger to boarding schools, and he joined Millbrook’s board with vast experience and talent. He brought a strong voice to the Finance and Investment Committees and was an integral resource for the Development Steering Committee. The Souder family advocated for Millbrook’s tradition of the Third Form Reading, which Hattie loved, and the building of a new home for the Advancement & Alumni Relations Office in Anthony House. Their support helped Millbrook complete various building projects on Pulling Circle. When asked about his time as a Millbrook trustee, Fritz replied:
“Serving on the Millbrook board for the past seven years with Jon Downs, Drew Casertano, and all my fellow trustees was an honor that I will cherish forever. Not only did my board experience afford me the opportunity to help think strategically about Millbrook tomorrow, but it also selfishly allowed me to to be a part of Hattie’s Millbrook experience today. Hattie and I miss Millbrook every day but are equally excited in our new roles as a dedicated alumna and a past trustee and parent.”
After relocating from New York City to Dutchess County during the pandemic, Tom Buttacavoli and his family quickly embraced the region and its community. As parents of three daughters, the Buttacavolis were drawn to Millbrook’s culture, which emphasizes a deep connection between students, faculty, and families—a commitment encapsulated in the school’s mission to ensure every student is truly “known and needed.” This philosophy, as Tom explains, is more than a tagline—it's the foundation of what makes Millbrook unique, influencing relationships at every level, from students and faculty to parents and trustees.
Tom’s decision to join the board stems from a desire to give back to the Millbrook community. As a member of the Investment Committee, he is keen to leverage his professional background to support the school’s financial sustainability and strategic growth. As a founding member of Waterfall Asset Management, an investment platform managing ~$13 billion in assets, he served as the firm’s chief investment officer responsible for developing and managing investment strategies in the U.S. and Europe. In addition to running the firm’s day-to-day investment activity, he chaired the Investment Committee, ran the ESG initiatives, and was an active member of the risk, technology, and operations committees.
He brings his deep knowledge of investment strategies to Millbrook, understanding that the endowment is the cornerstone of a school’s financial health. Tom is particularly inspired by the desire to invest in projects that will ensure school’s healthy future and enhance its ability to foster collaboration, community, and character development for generations to come.
His passion for Millbrook’s mission is palpable, as is his enthusiasm for the school’s potential. Reflecting on his role, Tom views his work on the board as a meaningful way to contribute to a school that has already made a profound impact on his family. “Millbrook isn’t just a place; it’s a community that truly lives its values.” Millbrook is thrilled to have his leadership and perspective on the journey forward.
Originally from Great Britain, Phil Drury moved to the U.S. in 2000 with Citigroup and met his wife, Megan, in Manhattan. They spent many weekends in Millbrook, as Megan is an avid equestrian, and they fell in love with the area, visiting the Trevor Zoo and attending local events. Married in 2004, they bought their Millbrook home in 2005, and the family has been deeply involved with the Millbrook community since. All three of their children, Juliet, Alexander, and Isabel, attended Dutchess Day. Juliet graduated from Millbrook in 2024, and Alexander will follow in 2026. Phil and Megan hope that Isabel will be a member of Millbrook’s Class of 2029.
Phil is grateful for how Millbrook has helped shape Juliet and Alexander and prepare them well for college and life beyond. He joins Millbrook’s board out of a combination of a deep personal investment in the school due to his children’s positive experiences and a respect for the school's leadership and vision. He welcomes the opportunity to give back and support the institution that has been an important part of his family's life, and he hopes to contribute his expertise and serve as a trusted advisor.
Phil will be working closely with other board members and with Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98, providing counsel based on his more than 25 years of experience in the finance industry. Starting at Citibank in 1996 in their graduate training program, he moved into advising and lead-managing global equity and capital markets before heading up EMEA banking, capital markets, and advisory in London. He currently oversees all technology, communications, and financial technology investment banking, managing a global team of 250 bankers since November 2021.
John Tuke, a seasoned leader in education and financial stewardship, brings decades of expertise to his role as Millbrook’s board treasurer.
After serving as CFO of the Hotchkiss School for 19 years, John transitioned to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 2018, taking on broader responsibilities in another mission-driven institution. In joining Millbrook’s board, his involvement with Millbrook continues his dedication to education. Now, he anticipates bringing a strategic perspective to Millbrook as he helps navigate the challenges of financial sustainability and a new ambitious capital campaign for the school.
As a contemporary at a neighboring independent school and a parent, John's connection to Millbrook runs deep. His middle son, Zach, is a Millbrook alumnus from the Class of 2018, and Zach has returned to teach and mentor students. “Zach has the kind of empathy and curiosity that teachers need,” John shared, noting the unique qualities his son brings to the classroom. He added, “I know he enjoys giving back to a school that did so much for him.”
John himself has actively participated in shaping Millbrook’s future, including serving on the NYSAIS committee for a recent accreditation. His understanding of independent schools, paired with his financial acumen, positions him well to help guide Millbrook toward its goals, including necessary capital improvements and long-term endowment growth.
Rooted in the Millerton area since he and his wife, Leslie Farhangi, bought their home in the 1980s, John has a deep appreciation for Millbrook’s strong identity and its ability to foster character development in its students. “As a former parent, and when I was an administrator at a peer school, I admired what Millbrook does with its students. Now as a trustee, I understand how this unique culture and community allows students to thrive in academics, athletics, and the dorms,” he remarked. As the school advances its ambitions, John is committed to ensuring that its resources are used wisely to support both today’s and tomorrow’s generations.
On February 19, 2024, Bob McLean ’72 and Woody Lynn ’72— lifelong friends—gathered at a reception with family and Millbrook friends and faculty at the home of Bob and his wife, Susan, in Vero Beach, Florida.
Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98 and Millbrook’s Senior Master Robert Anthony ’65 joined a crowd of supporters to honor and thank Bob and Woody with Millbrook Medals for their loyalty and devotion over so many years. We share this excerpt from Mr. Anthony’s tribute:
Professionally, Woody found success in his own firm, Moody, Lynn & Co., an investment counseling and money manager firm in Boston started in 1989. In his spare time, he and Hope raised four children, including Millbrook graduates Byron ’09 and Louise ’17. Woody eventually volunteered at Millbrook as a member of the Alumni Executive Committee, helping to raise money for the school during several phonathons in New York and Boston. He and his wife, Hope, hosted several receptions for Millbrook in Boston and at their home in Dover, Massachusetts. Woody also chaired his class’s 20th reunion, and five years later, he was elected to our Board of Trustees.
Bob was busy carving out his own career in the Philadelphia area—first at Kidder, Peabody & Co., where he went on to become a senior vice president, and later, as senior vice president at UBS Financial Services, where he remained through his retirement. Somehow, he and Susan found time to parent four children as well, one of whom, Clare, attended Millbrook as a member of the Class of 1999. Bob joined Millbrook’s board in 1993, and some could say that he inspired Woody’s commitment to join four years later. Together, they were Millbrook trustees for 16 and 13 years, respectively.
Their contributions to Millbrook were immense, as they skillfully chaired the Investment and Finance Committees at a time when Millbrook needed every penny these two looked after. This duo sharpened their pencils and put Millbrook on a path to growth and success thanks to their incredible wisdom and leadership. Woody also chaired the Committee on Trustees, which identified and recruited our school’s next generation of leaders.
Now, we honor all that they have done for Millbrook in their combined decades of service. It is with enormous pride and gratitude that Millbrook honors Bob McLean and Woody Lynn by presenting each with a Millbrook Medal, the highest honor an alumnus can receive.
The Strong Box is a special gathering space that connects Millbrook students past and present, as it was originally the school’s bank. Now a coffee house for Millbrook’s employees and VIth form students, its prominent location on Pulling Circle and delicious coffees, teas, and pastries make the Strong Box a go-to for socializing and reminiscing.
Dedicating a special Strong Box brew to the Class of 2024 made for an ideal Sixth Form Gift. Parents of graduating Mustangs have ensured the legacy and spirit of the Class of 2024 will carry on in this special gathering space through generous donations totaling $445,321.
On Giving Day, we ask parents and alumni to pitch in and contribute to the future of Milllbrook School. Every gift, regardless of size, is important because it is a gift of participation that signals loyalty and support of our community. We work hard to earn as close to 100% participation from our current families as possible.
As a result, we raised $353,191 from 482 donors on Giving Day in 2024. While we’re excited about the funds that will enable us to continue improving Millbrook, we’re even more thrilled at the vote of confidence from parents and alumni alike.
Alumni from the Class of 1974 returned to campus to celebrate their 50th reunion last spring. Turnout was high, and Millbrook rolled out the red carpet to welcome back these special alumni, some of whom were returning for the first time since graduating.
Impressed by the changes our campus has undergone in the past 50 years, reunion attendees gave back in a big way. For the first time in Millbrook’s long history, a single class contributed more than $1 million to keep our momentum going.
Mustangs look forward to showing their dorm pride every year during Winter Weekend—but the fun interdorm competition isn’t just for students. Parents also get involved by participating in the Winter Weekend Parent Challenge. The dorm with the highest percentage of parents who donate receives a special dinner party.
In the fifth year of the Winter Weekend Parent Challenge, while Prum Hall had the highest parent participation to nab the celebratory dinner, the entire community won. Parents rallied to donate a whopping $74,726 to support students and faculty in academic, athletic, and student life programs.
After graduating from Millbrook, Bob Anthony worked briefly with the New York Mets organization before returning to his alma mater as a faculty member in 1974. He served Millbrook School for an incredible 50 years! In that span of time, he worked with all of Millbrook’s heads of school, including Founding Headmaster Edward Pulling, who retired in 1963 but served on the Board of Trustees through 1976.
Over the past 50 years, Bob came to know nearly each one of Millbrook’s alums, earning him the well-deserved title of “Mr. Millbrook.” He also helped to raise nearly $150,000,000 for our school during his tenure, money that has helped maintain and enhance our beautiful campus and construct necessary new buildings like the Frederic C. Hamilton Math & Science Center, Koenigsberger Hall, and Casertano Hall. Through fundraising he also helped provide student scholarships and educational programs for a student body that has grown from about 160 students in 1965 to 335 today.
Bob and his wife, Ann, were wonderful hosts to many Millbrook students when they lived on campus with their children—Arthur ’07, Mimi ’08, and Sarah ’12— and he further supported many students as an advisor, coach, and dorm parent. He traveled the country and the world to visit with alums, catch up on all their stories, and share a lot of good Millbrook news with them.
Bob Anthony worked diligently and dedicated his time and energy to Millbrook because he loves this school dearly. Likewise, Millbrook will always hold Bob in the highest esteem as the longest serving faculty member in the school’s history whose efforts made Millbrook ever better.
Barbara Gatski has considerable history with Millbrook School, starting in the year 2000 when she joined our faculty as the chair of the World Languages Department.
Her goal has always been to advance Millbrook in every way possible, and first and foremost, Barbara was focused on the student experience, instituting and developing Millbrook’s language immersion program that became the model for other schools to emulate. Millbrook’s language students began speaking in their target language from the minute they entered their classrooms, and learning about culture became as important as learning a language.
During her first 13 years, until she moved full-time into Millbrook’s Advancement Office, Barbara mentored many other language instructors and enjoyed the opportunity to teach alongside her husband, John McMullan, a beloved longtime educator. Most recently, as the director of parent engagement and the Annual Fund, Barbara contributed substantially to Millbrook’s successful fundraising, working closely with Mr. Anthony and others in the Advancement Office and developing deep and steadfast relationships with current and past parents.
Now, Barbara lives part-time in Delaware, close to her children and grandchildren, and part-time in Connecticut, where she continues to raise money for a worthy cause. Sharon Playhouse, a non-profit theater producing highquality performances with Broadway-caliber actors and talented local community members, is fortunate to have Barbara as its new development director. She is thrilled to help support a teaching theater and the development of aspiring actors, and we are thrilled she is so close by!

The 1931 Society was established in memory of Millbrook School’s founders and the year of its founding; it honors those who have already made planned gift provisions for the school. Planned gifts to Millbrook include bequests, life income arrangements, and other deferred gifts.
Engaging in planned giving not only solidifies your legacy at Millbrook but also stands as a beacon of inspiration for future generations, highlighting your lasting values and generosity. Together, we shape the future of Millbrook for generations to come.
If you would like to discuss or have questions about these opportunities, please contact Natalie Smith in the Advancement & Alumni Relations Office at 845-677-6752 or nsmith@millbrook.org.
