By Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give And to see just who in this home did live. I looked all about a strange sight I did see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, awards of all kind A sober thought came through my mind. For this house was different, so dark and dreary, I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. I heard stories about them, I had to see more So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door. And there he lay sleeping silent alone, Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home. His face so gentle, his room in such disorder, Not how I pictured a United States soldier. Was this the hero of whom I’d just read? Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed? His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan, I soon understood this was more than a man. For I realized the families that I saw that night Owed their lives to these men who were willing to fight. Soon ‘round the world, the children would play, And grownups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of soldiers like this one lying here. I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home. Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry. The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, “Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice; I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more, my life is my God, my country, my Corps.” With that he rolled over and drifted off into sleep, I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep. I watched him for hours, so silent and still, I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill. So I took off my jacket, the one made of red, And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head. And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black, With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back. And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride, And for a shining moment, I was United States Army deep inside. I didn’t want to leave him on that cold dark night, This guardian of honor so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, whispered with a voice so clean and pure, “Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all is secure.” One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night!

English novelist Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870) 19th century. “A Christmas Carol played a huge part in creating this modern idea of Christmas.” She paints a portrait of Dickens that suggests why Christmas was so important to him – and why it provided the perfect setting for his moral tale. On one hand, she says, he “adored parties and gathering his friends together There was a wonderful conjuring trick he did with a top hat. He put into it flour, eggs and sugar, waved the hat about and out came a sizzling Christmas pudding.” Yet on the other hand, he was painfully aware that not everyone could enjoy such frivolity “The part of Dickens that loved celebrating???is celebrated in A??Christ-mas Carol with the parties and dances you see. It was very much in parallel to today. “It’s a message about the responsibility of the rich towards the poor and I think that’s why it’s so powerful. This balance between the Cratchit family and Ebenezer Scrooge resonates.”

AN EXPENSIVE RIDE

How much will a DUI cost me?

DUI patrols are always out, particularly at night. While some justify drunk driving by figuring they are only going a short distance, or that they are only endangering themselves, this logic is obviously flawed. Aside from the danger of drunk driving, many do not realize the mess a DUI will get you into. Although actual fines vary from state to state, here’s an idea of what it will cost you if you end up getting charged with a DUI and are found or plead guilty.

Attorney

One of the biggest costs associated with a DUI is the need for legal representation. In most states, an attorney will charge $1,500 to represent you in a DUI. It all depends on what state you’re in and the attorney’s usual and customary charge. It will depend on the firm, but many lawyers want that money up front.

Fines

For a first offender, fines can range

as low as $200 to as high as $2,000. Again, it depends on what state you’re in. Every county has a standard fine amount that’s imposed, but it’s not unusual to see fines higher than that standard amount, depending on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Court Costs

Most people don’t realize there are court costs assessed too. These costs are imposed by state legislatures. How expensive are they? It will depend on where you live, but many court costs are somewhere between $700 and $1000. Many people overlook this cost because they think they are covered once they have hired a lawyer. Don’t forget about this expensive little detail.

DUI School

Almost all states require a first time DUI offender to obtain an alcohol evaluation and attend a remedial alcohol education program consisting DUI, cont’d. on Page 20

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Veterans Day should be elevated to national holiday

Dear Editor: I draw your attention to a Letter to the Editor of the S.D. Union-Tribune’s Friday, Nov. 14 edition. In it, the writer conveys her thoughts about Veterans Day becoming a day veterans shouldn’t have to work. The best way to make this happen is to make Veterans Day a national holiday, a day off for all Americans to our nation’s “Defenders of Freedom.” This it the letter sent to the U-T: “Veterans Day should be made extra special I still remember the day I told my husband not to wake up the kids in the morning. There was no school because it was Veterans Day. Then I told him don’t wake me either because I don’t have to go to work. My husband replied with a smile and a touch of irony in his voice: “How come I have to go to work? I’m the only veteran in this house.” Ever since then I have thought there ought to be a law that vets don’t have to work on Veterans Day. Signed Fran Zimmerman” In American we have holidays for all things we hold dear in our hearts. That said, today America has approximately 25 million living veterans. We do have a day set aside commemorating the service of those who have served to protect and defend these United States of America. That day, Veterans Day, falls on Nov. 11 each year. Of all things that are near and dear to the hearts of “We The People,” why not have Veterans Day be an official LETTERS, cont’d. on Page 20

Shelter to Soldier provides psychiatric service dogs to U.S. veterans For U.S. veteran Vic Martin, this past Veteran’s Day commemorated more than service to his country; it was also the day that his new companion graduated from service training. “Kira,” the precocious rescue dog, received training that will help Vic alleviate stress, anxiety, sleepless nights, hypervigilence, panic attacks and other symptoms related to his medical diagnoses. Kira will guide him through the challenging days ahead. Shelter to Soldier (STS) is a non-profit organization that rescues shelter dogs and trains them to become certified psychiatric service companions for post-9/11 U.S. combat vets suffering from PTSD and/or TBI. According to Vic, STS provides a service that is desperately needed by U.S. veterans. “When I retired from the Navy after multiple deployments and subsequently diagnosed with severe medical disabilities (brought on by a brain injury due to impact-

ful frontal lobe hypoxia), I was prescribed seven different prescription drugs by the VA to alleviate my condition after spending 14 days in the VA ICU. The drugs I was prescribed to ingest

on a daily basis had negative side effects, including loss of memory, anxiety and extreme depression. Fortunately, my wife discovered the services provided by STS and I have since been able to reduce the number of prescription drugs that I am on, which I attribute directly to the services provided from STS.”

Every day on average, twentytwo (22) U.S. veterans commit suicide (Department of Veteran Affairs). In the past year alone, the number of diagnosed cases of PTSD in the military jumped 50% and this represents cases that have been diagnosed. Studies estimate that one in every five military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is suffering from PTSD. To learn more about veteran-support services provided by STS, call 855-CUSTMK9 (855287-8659) for a confidential interview regarding eligibility.

Navy vets won’t leave the sea behind them By Heather Siegel The Siegel Sidebar When international cargo ships arrive at the Port of San Diego, the crew on board is anxious to start their shore leave, using their limited time for shopping at Wal-Mart, or, making a call home. Rather than spending a few hours of freedom away from the monotony and isolation of the job, however, they find themselves marooned on deck, unable to leave. Not necessarily because they don’t speak English, but because they lack proper identification to wander freely on American soil. The stranded men and women turn for emotional and physical support to the San Diego Stella Maris Seafarers Center, located about two miles to the south of the USS Midway Museum. That’s where Fathers Crafts and Boyd come to the rescue. Along with enthusiastic volunteers, the two priests operate a van escort service. But the Center offers more than just a taxi. Sacraments are performed for all who request them. “If the mariners seek recreation, we provide computer terminals, phone cards, and ping-pong, a home away from home,” said Fr. Boyd. Both of these men of the cloth have had previous extensive careers in the U.S. Navy, having been stationed in the Western Pacific, Camp Pendleton and Balboa Naval Hospital. Despite earning their right to quiet retirement now, Bob Crafts, of Poway, and Jim Boyd, of Linda Vista, continue to serve the

people of the sea. The commercial seafarers come from many different countries: the Philippines, India, Ukraine, Ecuador, Myanmar (Burma), and Indonesia. This year, Father Boyd, the Roman Catholic, and Father Crafts, the Episcopalian, will be distributing shoeboxes, filled with personal toiletries and knitted caps, to itinerant people, stuck at the Port of San Diego, at Christmastime. Boyd and Crafts, former sailors themselves, attempt to provide that spiritual connection to the faithful. “Christian chaplains working together to serve seafarers from diverse cultures and faith backgrounds is a very good thing,” said Father Freddie Chua, 47, a Roman Catholic priest who serves cruise ship workers at the San Pedro and the Long Beach, California ports. “We don’t care what country the person comes from or what religion they practice or don’t practice. If a mariner is ill, needs comfort, wants to seek confession, or, unfortunately, is hospitalized, it’s a terrible thing to be sick in a foreign language,” noted Rev. Crafts. After Robert Crafts, M.D., 79, completed his term of service in the U.S. Navy, as a physician, he followed his dream and enrolled in seminary. Now an Episcopalian priest, Fr. Crafts serves alongside with Fr. James Boyd, 78, a retired U.S. Navy Roman Catholic chaplain, at the Center. Neither one is

MMA REPORT

Jury to face Cerrone in co-main event at UFC 182 By Art Garcia There will be fireworks a-plenty on the opening weekend of the New Year as unbeaten lightweight contender Myles “Fury” Jury battles Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the Co-Main event at UFC 182: Jones vs Cormier on Jan.3. Following impressive wins over Diego Sanchez and former PRIDE Champion Takanori Gomi, Jury (15-0) is regarded as one of the UFC’s hottest fighters and is currently ranked No. 8. Known as one of the toughest fighters in the sport, Cerrone (25-6-1) has won five straight fights and has climbed the ranks to No. 4 in the division. While preparing for the biggest fight of his career, Jury answered a few questions from MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. AG: Last time we talked you were making your debut on a PPV main card and just two fights later you’re now the co-main event on UFC 182 Jones vs Cormier – how does it feel?

Myles “The Fury” Jury

MJ: It’s been a long time coming to get to this point, and it feels good, especially taking the true professional route by my actions (winning) earning this, not trash talk and a political system which seems to be more popular. AG: Coming off impressive wins over Sanchez and Gomi, what did you learn about yourself? MJ: I learn something new each and every day, so the training has a bigger impact on molding me to get better a lot more than a fight. But, each and every fight I do get more experienced mentally for all the fight week stuff and dealing with everything a fighter goes through with a weight cut and fight. So the experience each fight definitely is where I’m getting better, stronger with a sharp mindset that works well each fight.

AG: Were you surprised how you seemed to dominate both of them? MJ: No, not at all. My style is totally different than everyone else’s (jury Jiu Jitsu, MMA’s new era) and when I’m firing on all cylinders and on point, I

expect that to do each and every fight no matter who it is. So I’ve never been surprised, I just need to tweak certain things to be better and constantly evolve. If anything I get disappointed for not dominating more. Nothing in

life always go perfect so I put a lot of emphasis on adversity and being able to turn things around, “if” I ever get in a bad situation and have a night where I’m not on point. So that is my reserve or safety per say that gets the most focus, so I don’t have any surprises. Dominating is normal to me. AG: You are the 1st fighter to ever KO or TKO Takamori, that’s a big accomplishment – your thoughts? MJ: Good things happen to good people that do good things. Or, hard work and determination pays off at the right time. That’s all I can really say for that. AG: In one of the toughest divisions in the UFC you are climbing up the rankings pretty quickly -- how close do you think you are to earning a shot at the title? MJ: I’m going into a bout with the toughest and best fighter in the world at this time. He’s by far more active, injury free, dominating and tough in every aspect more than anyone else at this time. Getting a win over him (Cerrone) puts me at the top of the division. But because I don’t play the political game with the trash talk, hype and intimidation, I’ve actually moved up the ranks a lot slower than most, even having guys I’ve beat above me at certain times. So nothing surprises me with the political ranking stuff in this sport. To be honest, I don’t even care about ranks and if I was even in the top 10. I am focused on myself, what I can control, pay zero attention to anything I can’t control and just keep winning. My actions will speak for me and as long as I keep winning, I will get to the top slowly but surely, it’s just a matter of time. So if I fight for the title next, great. If I have to beat five other guys, great – I don’t care. I’m not into this to brag, I’m out to prove I’m the best and to do that I have to fight the best. Right now the best fight is Cerrone and the only thing I’m thinking about. AG: Tell me about your opponent Donald Cerrone? MJ: He’s the current best fighter in the world. He’s good in adversity, he’s good everywhere and doesn’t show a lot of areas of weakness. But it’s the perfect fight for me for a plethora of reasons. I’m not a talker, so I’ll leave it at that. You want more, tune in at TheTeamFury.com, facebook.com/TheTeamFury, twitter.com/FuryJury, and instagram.com/FuryJury. AG: Cerrone recently tweeted that you basically backed out of a December fight against him, response? MJ: He was either provided false information or using a tactic to get me to fight him around a time he would rather have. I have no idea, but he was wrong, I never cared and still don’t, hence why I never spoke on it. Plus, we’re fighting January 3rd, so I don’t get what there is to talk about on this subject. AG: Both you and Donald are wellrounded fighters with great punching power, how do you see this fight turning out – moving & striking; wrestling with some ground & pound; other? MJ: You will see January 3rd. Again, I’m not a talker that likes to explain myself. At the same time my style is too complex to have any interest in explaining to anyone but those within my team / Jury Jiu Jitsu.

Moral of the Story: Bullsh*t might take you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

Things that make you go “Hmmm”

War strategy

Just for Laughs

Two rabbits were being chased by a pack of wolves. The wolves chased the rabbits into a thicket. After a few minutes, one rabbit turned to the other and said, “Well, do you want to make a run for it or stay here a few days and out number them?”

Pheasant & bull

A pheasant says to a bull, “I would love to get on top of that tree, but I haven’t the energy.”

“Well,” says the bull, “why don’t you eat some of my dung? It’s packed with nutrients.”

So the pheasant eats some dung and finds that it gives him enough energy to get to the first branch. The next day, he eats some more and gets to the next branch. This cycle continues for a week. Finally, the pheasant is at the top of the tree, where he is spotted by the farmer, who shoots him with a shotgun.

ing for the DUI 18 months later. So how much does a DUI cost? Depending on your particular state and the circumstances of your arrest, you’re looking at about $4,000 that has to be paid within a short period of time. That’s the good news. The bad news comes when you’ve been caught a second time or third time. Fines and costs increase significantly and you’re looking at jail time.

LETTERS

Cont’d. from Page 10 thank you with the creation of a “national holiday.” America has national holidays recognizing major events like 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, etc. Why not have a national holiday to commemorate the millions of Americans who’ve served or are serving to protect and defend the U.S. As your Veteran Advocate, I think it appropriate for Americans to write letters to their Congressman and ask that he or she draft a proposal for the creation of a Veterans Day national holiday. — Bob Zimmerman

As with most driving infractions, a DUI will cause the cost of your insurance to increase. One way or another, insurance companies learn of these dirty little details. When they do, premiums go up drastically across the board. The increased premiums will stay with you for at least a couple of years, so even if you’ve paid your attorney, fines and costs, and paid for and attended DUI school, you’re still paywww.MilitaryPress.com • editorsdesk@militarypress.com

Holiday travel gift ideas It’s that time of year to think about presents. Here are a few of my favorites. Head to Toe

Outdoor Research’s Exit Cap is stylish and comfortable. It’s durable wool/ polyester/nylon blend will keep your head warm and dry. www. outdoorresearch.com Clothing Arts has a couple of super products to keep thieves at bay (I can attest that they work; I was “jostled” in the Paris Metro but lost nothing). Their Business Traveler Pants and Pick Pocket Proof Shirt passed the test. Big pluses; they are easy to wash, dry quickly and look good. www.clothingarts. com Outdoor Research, OR, scores again on the list with their Exit Jacket. Although it’s lightweight, it provides as much warmth as a heavier coat. It features a sleek style, zippered front, fleece base plus several interior pockets for storage. www.outdoorresearch. com The patented SeV Pack Jacket by Scottevest is more than a lightweight windbreaker. It provides an extra layer for rain or cold just when you need it. It packs into itself, is washable and stain resistant and even comes with a built in diagram indicating the location of all 13 pockets. www.scottevest. com I recently spent 21 days in France with two pair of Keen shoes (Marshall WP and light hiking boots) and three pairs of Keen socks (they come marked

left and right). All were up to the challenges of walking five to seven miles a day over cobblestones, across parapets, around fortresses, up stairs, etc. I’m a big fan; their shoes fit well, are durable, comfortable and look good. www. keenfootwear.com

Packing It All In

There are two kinds of luggage; carry-on and lost. Eagle Creek has a full line of quality roll-ons and backpacks. My recommendations are the Load Warrior Wheeled Duffel 22 and Digi Hauler Backpack. They are commodious, yet lightweight and sturdy, and come with a lifetime warranty. To organize your “stuff,” consider Eagle Creek’s Pack-It System. www.eaglecreek.com

Suntegrity produces a wide range of holistic, natural sun care products that are effective. The broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen comes in TSA approved sizes, so packing them in your carry-on is not an issue. www.suntegrityskincare.com

The Q-Knot is a multipurpose reusable tie that replaces rubber bands and twisties. They come in various lengths and are ideal for anything that needs bundling. www.ut-wire. com The History Channel’s Anniversary four set program, 100 Years of WW I, is a comprehensive overview of “the Great War.” It chronicles the development of weapons and warfare that led to 15 million dead and 20 million wounded. It’s a perfect gift for history or military buffs. www.history. com The Entertainment Book is my perennial choice. It features discounts and promotions for travel, entertainment, restaurants, sports, shopping, services and attractions. There are many additional promotions, including monthly and weekly web specials, digital options and out-of-town alter-
