This is not the SPICE of life! A BAG OF SPICE:
Synthetic cannabis is an herbal and chemical product which mimics the effects of cannabis. It is best known by the brand names K2 and Spice When synthetic cannabis products first went on sale it was thought that they achieved an effect through a mixture of legal herbs. Laboratory analysis in 2008 showed this was not the case and that they in fact contained synthetic cannabinoids which act on the body in a similar way to cannabinoids naturally found in cannabis, such as THC. Synthetic cannabinoids, including cannabicyclohexanol, JWH018, JWH-073, and HU-210, are used in an attempt to avoid the laws which make cannabis illegal, making synthetic cannabis a designer drug. It has been sold under various brand names, online, in head shops and at some gas stations. It is marketed as an incense or “herbal smoking blend,” but the products are usually smoked by users. Although synthetic cannabis does not produce positive results in drug tests for cannabis, it is possible to detect its metabolites in human urine. The synthetic cannabinoids contained in synthetic cannabis products have been made illegal in many European countries, but remain legal under federal law in the United States. Several U.S. states have made it illegal under state law. No official studies have been conducted on its effects on humans. Though its effects are not well documented, extremely large doses may cause negative effects that are generally not noted in marijuana users, such as increased agitation and vomiting.
Professor John W. Huffman who first synthesised many of the cannabinoids used in synthetic cannabis is quoted as saying, “People who use it are idiots. You don’t know what it’s going to do to you.” A three-gram package of Spice is said by one study, to have the same health effects on the lungs as a packet of cigarettes, although no conclusive evidence of this exists outside of the study. A user who consumed 3 g of Spice Gold every day for several months showed withdrawal symptoms, similar to those associated with withdrawing from the use of narcotics. Doctors treating the user also noted that his use of the product showed signs associated with addiction. One case has been reported where a user, who had previously suffered from cannabis induced recurrent psychotic episodes, suffered reactivation of their symptoms after using Spice. Psychiatrists treating him have suggested that the lack of an antipsychotic chemical, similar to cannabidiol found in natural cannabis, may make synthetic cannabis more likely to induce psychosis than natural cannabis.

The misuse of legal substances is banned for all servicemembers. hDoD Directive 1010-3.4 includes in its definition of drug abuse, “The wrongful use, possession, distribution, or introduction onto a military installation of a controlled substance, prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, or intoxicating substance (other than alcohol).”
C-4 seized in Navy SEAL smuggling case Federal agents in Las Vegas seized five pounds of C-4 military explosives from the home of a man accused with a Navy SEAL and a Las Vegas associate of smuggling machine guns from Iraq into the U.S. for sale and shipment to Mexico, authorities said on Nov. 4. Grenades and night-vision goggles also were found in the Colorado home of 34-yearold Richard Paul, according to federal prosecutors and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents in Las Vegas and Colorado. Paul and Andrew Kaufman, 36, of Las Vegas, were arrested Wednesday and appeared Thursday before federal magistrate judges in Durango and Las Vegas on conspiracy charges. Each was ordered held in federal custody pending
an evidentiary hearing. They are accused of conspiring with Navy SEAL Nicholas Bickle of San Diego to smuggle and sell weapons to an undercover federal agent in Nevada and Colorado. “As long as they got paid ... they didn’t care if the weapons wound up in Mexico or on the streets of Las Vegas,” federal prosecutor Drew Smith told U.S. Magistrate Judge George Foley Jr. in Las Vegas. S m i t h characterized Bickle, 33, as a “rogue Navy SEAL” — an active-duty special warfare operator 1st class who Smith said also worked as a consultant on the Hollywood movie “Transformers 3.” Bickle was arrested Wednesday and was due to appear Friday before a federal magistrate judge in San Diego.

The Che controversy
The drama continues . . . Ok, we surely ruffled a lot of feathers with our piece on Che Guevara in our October 15th issue with many angered readers writing in. There was no intent to glorify this person, we were trying in haste to begin a column that would profile different figures in our history, both good and bad. In retrospect, we should have not acted with such haste and done some more research. It is true that people are enamored with his iconic image and gloss over or ignore the facts . . . I think, embarrassingly we have done some of the latter. Thank you to all the readers for keeping us on our toes. Here’s a short essay on Che Guevara by Dr. Douglas Young, Professor of Political Science & History at Gainesville State College that may suffice as the flipside to the piece than ran Oct 15th. Hollywood has dutifully churned out yet another cinematic agitprop paean to a leftist “martyr,” this time Ernesto Guevara. So let’s recall the real “Che” and try to discern why many supposedly democratic, civil libertarian liberals still swoon over this Stalinist mass-murderer. The meticulous myth of Senor Guevara is of a handsome Argentine heroically helping Fidel Castro’s guerrillas liberate Cuba from Fulgencio Batista’s military dictatorship in 1959. Then he became a global revolutionary icon inspiring the downtrodden to rise up everywhere, even personally leading rebel warriors in the Congo before being executed doing the same in Bolivia in 1967. The (communist) party line says Che personifies the selfless humanitarian courageously fighting for “social justice.” He’s the Marxists’ martyred Christ figure replete with
pictures of his half-naked corpse riddled with bullet holes. And the classic poster of an angry young Guevara has scarred countless college dorm rooms for over 40 years, putting a face on the eternally young rebel for angry adolescents everywhere. The real Guevara was a reckless bourgeois adrenaline-junkie seeking a place in history as a liberator of the oppressed. But this fanatic’s vehicle of “liberation” was Stalinism, named for Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, murderer of well over 20 million of his own people. As one of Castro’s top lieutenants, Che helped steer Cuba’s revolutionary regime in a radically repressive direction. Soon after overthrowing Batista, Guevara choreographed the executions of hundreds of Batista officials without any fair trials. He thought nothing of summarily executing even fellow guerrillas suspected of disloyalty and shot one himself with no continued on page 8

Paying new agent orange claims a complex drill Many Vietnam veterans with ischemic heart disease, Parkinson’s disease or B-cell leukemia expected VA compensation for their illnesses to begin soon after a 60-day congressional review period ended Oct. 30. Though the first batch of payments did go out mid-week, the relatively small number -- about 1300 claims worth $8 million -- reinforced the fact that the process for calculating retroactive payments is timely and complex. VA expects to produce a steady stream of rating decisions and payments each week for these diseases, perhaps in the thousands. But there will not be a November geyser of checks as some veterans had hoped. Most of 163,000 veterans or survivors with pending claims for these diseases should expect a longer wait, at least several more months. The VA goal is to have all these claims processed and paid by October next year. After VA published its final regulation Aug. 31 to add these diseases to its list of ailments presumed caused by herbicide
exposure in Vietnam, Congress had 60 days to block it. To veterans’ relief, it chose not to do so. VA used that time to do preliminary work on many claims but had to stop short of assigning disability ratings. That’s because VA computers are programmed to assign a payment date with each rating and, by law, none of these claims could be paid before the 60 days had passed. Claim specialists don’t have all the information they need yet to rate a lot of the old claims. Many veterans and survivors in line for retroactive payments, some going back 25 years, are being asked to provide letters from private physicians explaining when the ailments first were diagnosed. VA also will try to develop timelines for a disease’s progression in individuals so appropriate disability ratings can be assigned at different stages, and back payments are calculated as accurately as possible. For ischemic heart disease, for example, a patient initially needing medication might have been rated 10 percent. Years later, when an x-ray showed an enlarged heart, the rating could have been raised 30 percent. As stress tests showed the disease

progressing, higher ratings and higher compensation would be made. Barton F. Stichman, co-director of the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP), said he doesn’t know how many claims will need to be developed this way or how many can be paid without VA waiting for more information. His organization, NVLSP, is certified counsel for the class of veterans filing Agent Orange claims. More than 1000 claim specialists in nine VA resource centers are working solely on 93,000 claims filed for these diseases between Sept. 25, 1985 and Oct. 13, 2009. The end date is when VA Secretary Eric Shinseki announced his decision to add these diseases to the list of presumptive diseases for Agent Orange exposure. The earlier date is when VA first published a regulation on presumptive AO diseases, sparking a successful court challenge on behalf ailing Vietnam vets. This resulted in an appeals court ruling, Nehmer v. Department of Veterans Affairs, ordering that VA compensate veterans retroactively for any claim they filed for a disease later deemed service-connected because of new medical evidence linking it to herbicide exposure in Vietnam. Shinseki’s announcement triggered Nehmer protection for 93,000 previously denied claims. Since then, 70,000 more veterans and survivors have filed new claims for these diseases. The more recent claims are being worked at VA regional offices by another army of claim specialists. VA has trained hundreds of rating specialists specifically for these new Nehmer claims using a new 100-page instruction manual. These retroactive claims often require complicated calculations and, if veterans have died since claims were filed, often long searches for next of kin. VA officials know their computers runs haven’t identified all previously denied claims for these diseases. The fault lies with a legacy data system, the Benefit Delivery Network. It was programmed to retain only six conditions claimed by a veteran. So if a veteran claimed 10 ailments, four of them, once denied, would not be found today in the electronic record. could include one of the diseases now deemed compensable. All claimed conditions would appear in a veteran’s paper record. But only computer records have been used to identify previously denied claims for ischemic heart disease, Parkinson’s disease and B-cell leukemia. Veterans or survivors who want to be sure their denied claim is being reviewed can call their VA regional office to learn if they are among the 93,000 being eyed for retroactive compensation. “There’s no time limit on this,” said a VA official. “So if they don’t get some notice that we are working on their claim in the next six months or so they should say ‘Hey, what about me?’ ” VA expects five to 10 percent of the 93,000 to involve ailments still not linked to Agent Orange and so they will be denied once more. Officials blame imprecision in use of diagnostic codes found in the case files. About 10,000 of the older claims were filed by veterans now deceased. For these, award notices will be mailed to last known addresses. If past experience is an accurate guide, 90 percent will be returned as undeliverable. VA will take a few more steps to reach next of kin and then pass on these files to the NVLSP to continue the search. “We’ve been able to locate a lot of these people in the past” for VA, Stichman. But for some cases “it’s taken us a few years.” As certified counsel for the class, the NVLSP also gets a copy of every Agent Orange claim decided so it can monitor VA compliance. Given the resources VA has committed to these claim, Stichman believes the VA is trying to pay claims as quickly and carefully as it can. He also isn’t concerned that VA’s own completion deadline is 11 months away. “That doesn’t surprise me. Che was a purist political fanatic who saw everything in stark black and white. Therefore he vociferously opposed freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, protest, or any other rights not completely consistent with his North Korean-style communism. How many rock music-loving teens sporting Guevara t-shirts today know their hero supported Cuba’s 1960s’ repression of the genre? How many homosexual fans know he had gays jailed? Did the Obama volunteers in that Texas campaign headquarters with Che’s poster on the wall know that Guevara fervently opposed any free elections? How “progressive” is that? How socially just was it that Che was enraged when the Russians blinked during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis and withdrew their nuclear missiles from the island, thus averting a nuclear war? Guevara was such a zealous ideologue that he relished the specter of millions of Cuban lives sacrificed on the altar of communism, declaring Cuba “a people ready to sacrifice itself to nuclear arms, that its ashes might serve as a basis for new societies.” Some humanitarian. Che was a narcissist who boasted that “I have no house, wife, children, parents, or brothers; my friends are friends as long as they think like me, politically.” This is a role model for today’s “post-political” voters claiming we should get beyond partisanship? Adding to the ridiculousness of the Che cult is that he was virtually a complete failure. As a medical doctor, he never even had a practice. When put in charge of the Cuban economy at the start of Castro’s government, his uncompromising communist diktats ran it completely into the ground, from which it never recovered. Humiliated, and also angry that Castro wasn’t fomenting enough revolution abroad, he then tried to lead such quixotic adventures in

Argentina, the Congo, and Bolivia, failing miserably everywhere while sacrificing the lives of scores of naïve, idealistic young followers as deluded pawns in the service of his personality cult. Another reason he fled Cuba in the mid-1960s was the complete mess he made of his private life. Though he preached sexual purity to his colleagues, he was a shameless adulterer who abandoned two wives and many children, some legitimate, others not. As a grandson put it, “he was never home.” The public Che who supposedly had such great love for humanity privately couldn’t stand most folks. Guevara’s promiscuous communist adventurism was the pattern of a terminal adolescent running away from his problems to get caught up in some heroic crusade against his eternal bete noir, “Yankee imperialism.” So why do so many well-heeled American libs still admire this thug? Are the young simply ignorant of his execrable record and drawn to the image of the dashing young rebel? Do older progressives feel guilt for their free market prosperity, and showing solidarity with Che absolves them? Do hippies-turned-yuppies get nostalgic for their youthful protests and rationalize that the symbolism of Che as a “social reformer” eclipses his actual horrific human rights record? And are some American Guevaraistas truly dangerous leftists who seek to emulate their icon and destroy our free, democratic, capitalist society? Ask that guy wearing the Che t-shirt.

Thankfulness at Thanksgiving In the tradition of our early Pilgrims, we will soon celebrate “Thanksgiving” which is a perfect time to reflect on the things for which we each are grateful. Probably, like many of you, the past year has been one filled with many of the stressors we can experience in this life. Yet, there is also a lot of evidence of the many blessings that we so freely enjoy. In everything we ought to be thankful. It has been said, “Of all the qualities one can possess, perhaps the trait which most brings contentment and most quickly reduces stress is the virtue of gratitude.” When we take a good look around and see those who
seem to exhibit peace within them, and seem to enjoy more of life, even with the normal daily struggles, we find that they tend to be those who acknowledge their blessings and show gratitude. Most of us enjoy being around these people. Sometimes we don’t even recognize why, but it is most likely due to their grateful outlook on life. They take in and appreciate the little things. They take time to enjoy a run on the beach at dawn and watch the beautiful sunrise, or recognize the joy of children playing and the beauty of nature, and then desire to share it with those around

them. I have been trying to do this more in my life; to take in and appreciate all that is around me so freely given. With the Holiday season beginning, I wanted to share a message of “Thanks And Giving.” In the Bible, the Apostle Paul says, “In every thing give thanks; for this is the will of God.” Giving thanks is an expression of a heart full of gratitude, a heart full of love. In good relationships we can express gratitude by being thoughtful and considerate, by demonstrating our thanks with love to those around us. At the end of the OIF I, I was able to “Holy Helo” from ship to ship and ride home on ships filled with Marines and Sailors returning from Iraq. I heard great expressions of love and appreciation for the simple and little things of home. I hope we can remember and continue to appreciate the things we learned from the experience of being away from our blessings of home due to war and deployments. We who serve in the military, who deploy now and then, or regularly, might want to receive this awakening by arranging some time for our spouse to “deploy”, get away, for a couple of days and take over their responsibilities. I have had many a woman come for counseling express, “I wish my husband really appreciated the things I do around the home.” A story by Ruth C. Ikerman, shares this message. It is entitled, “Thankful Tongues.” “On Thanksgiving morning I stepped to the fence and said to my neighbor, “I’m so glad you live next door to me.” She looked up with a surprised smile on her face and said, “Thank you so very much. Nobody ever said that to me before.” Surely all her neighbors had often thought this about my next-door neighbor, for her kindnesses on routine days of the year were varied. She would pick up the newspaper and put it on the porch when someone was going to be late coming home, so that the paper wouldn’t be carried off by stray dogs. She could be counted on to turn off the water if a mischievous child began to play with the garden hose in the owner’s absence. Yes, she was a fine neighbor, and many had reasons to be glad for the blessing of her personality. Yet when I took time to tell her in simple words that I was thankful she lived next door, she seemed so surprised and happy--as if I had handed her an unexpected amount of money. This year as Thanksgiving approaches, I am wondering if there are others who need to hear a statement of the obvious. Should I speak a word to my doctor, lawyer, and merchant? The emotion of gratitude that we regrettably keep hidden during much of the rest of the year has opportunity to come plainly into view when Thanksgiving Day approaches. In the true spirit of the season, we come to know the happiness spoken of in the Bible: “A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!” (Proverbs 15:23.) Thankful tongues can encourage a neighbor or a loved one and show gratitude to God for his blessings.” It is my hope and prayer that with the great experience we just went through in the freedoms to vote and serve a free people, and all the other blessings we enjoy daily, in this free land our Pilgrims established, that we truly reflect on how grateful we should really be. Take the time to sit quietly and ponder how you can express that gratitude to those around you more regularly. The Aztecs were ranked in the Top 25 in the Associated P r e s s preseason poll that was r e l e a s e d Thursday at No. 25. It marks the first time ever that San Diego State has been ranked in either the AP or Coaches Poll. “This is not only about what we were able to accomplish last season, but the success that we have been able to sustain over a period of years,” Aztecs coach Steve Fisher said in a statement, “I think people now look at this program as one that is not only good regionally, but one that can compete on a national level.” The Aztecs are not the highest ranked Mountain West Conference team in the AP poll. Bryant signed a three-year, $83.5 million extension in April with the Lakers that will make him the highest-paid player through the 2013-14 season in which he is set to earn $30.5 million. He will be the first NBA player to make more than $30 million since Michael Jordan during the 1997-98 season. The NBA is looking to enact a salary rollback as part of its next collective bargaining agreement with the players, which would knock Bryant under $30 million if successful. Bryant and Dallas

The formation of the Miami Heat super team has been the dominant NBA storyline for the past four months as fans weighed the merits of the game’s best players joining forces to win a title. James might be guilty of a few things in his move to Miami, but being selfish isn’t one of them. James and Bosh will make $14.5 million apiece in salary this season, while Dwyane Wade’s deal is worth $14 million. None of them are among the 20 top-paid players in the game. The NBA’s highest-paid player is guard Kobe Bryant(notes), who last season led the Los Angeles Lakers to its fifth title since he entered the league in 1996. This season he is the NBA’s highest-paid player for the first time in his career with a salary of $24.8 million. Bryant inherits the title from Tracy McGrady(notes) who last season still reaped the benefits of a $63 million, three-year contract extension he signed in 2004 before injuries forced him to miss

Bryant deserves his role as the highestpaid player with his championship pedigree and individual accolades that include selections for: All-Star games (12 times), All-NBA teams (eight times), All-NBA defensive teams (eight times) and All-Star MVP (three times). Some of the other highest-paid players are head-scratchers though. Take the second highest-paid player in the game: Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis. Lewis signed a $118 million, six-year deal in 2007 that pays him $20.5 million this season. Lewis scored 14 points a game last year and averaged 4.5 rebounds. ESPN’s John Hollinger devised a player efficiency rating, which had Lewis ranked 48th out of 71 power forwards last season. Lewis has no right being in the league’s financial elite. The SEMA car show features some fantastic autos + a whole lot more! Chevy’s Camaro Red Flash Voted as Hottest Inaugural SEMA Car Based on the ballots counted from the exhibitors at this years’ SEMA Show, the Camaro has been selected as the “Hottest Car” for 2010. The criteria included the number of aftermarket accessories available for that particular model and its popularity with exhibitors. There are a host of aftermarket accessories for most Chevrolet models, but none with as many as the Camaro – cementing its position at the top of the admiration list. Chevrolet has released the first official details on one of their customized Camaros headed to SEMA. It’s called the Red Flash Camaro and it’s based on the SS model. This special model features a Red Jewel exterior paint accented with gray heritage stripes and gray-accented 21-inch wheels. The package also includes body-color ground effects, high-wing rear spoiler with black-painted stanchions and other gray accents, and an Ebony leather-trimmed cabin with titanium stitching and red accents on the seats. Under the hood Chevrolet placed a LS3 6.2L V-8 engine with Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission. Other modifications include new air intake and exhaust systems, engine cover in Red Jewel and Hurst shifter with custom stone-color stitching on the boot and shift knob. All of these modifications were made in order to increase the car’s performance, style, and sound. Unfortunately, we don’t have any official numbers just yet, but we’ll get them out as soon as we can. Stay tuned!
2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 After Mopar announced its line-up for SEMA Show, Chrysler has also revealed the official detail on the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 that will also be presented in Las Vegas. it will be offered in two versions: standard and Inaugural Edition, last limited to 1,492 units. It will go on sale at a price of $42,555. For the exterior Dodge is offering two colors and new
full-body stripe combination including Deep Water Blue with standard Stone White stripes or Bright White Clear Coat with standard Viper Blue stripes and 20inch SRT-exclusive wheels. There will also be “392 HEMI” badges, Mopar quad exhaust tips, a larger front splitter and integrated front fender, a newly modified front fascia chin spoiler and rear decklid spoiler. The interior will offer standard Smooth Pearl White leathertrimmed seats and dual blue stripes accented by unique blue stitching and serialized “Inaugural Edition 392 HEMI” dash plaque. Under the hood Dodge placed the legendary 392-cubic inch HEMI V8 powertrain with 470 HP and 470 lb.-ft. of torque.

The magazine dressed up Miller is various outfits and wigs and placed her in front of a Ford Thunderbird, a Ford Mustang and a Porsche 356. We’re not sure why they chose the vehicles they did, but who’s going to be looking at them anyway. Miller has worked with companies such as HarleyDavidson and Sport Illustrated. In 2008, she helped launch the new VRSCF V-Rod Muscle motorcycle and she continues to work with that great American company. On top of posing for photographs and helping launch new bikes, Miller has worked on a few sitcoms, including How I Met Your Mother and Gary Unmarried. She is currently developing her own shoot focused on the military.

Jeter to Play Till He Is 43? Road games, hotel rooms, bad food and no Minka. Derek Jeter always came across as someone that doesn’t love the game enough to stick around when he can’t produce at a high level any longer. The story that always comes to mind is how A-Rod wanted to watch the late west coast games on Jeter’s TV, and was surprised to find out the Captain didn’t have the MLB Package. Once Jeter was done with his game for the day he was done with baseball. There isn’t anything wrong with that – most of us don’t want to worry about our jobs when off the clock- but doesn’t scream baseball lifer either. As crazy as it may sound, perhaps the Yankees should give Jeter 7 years and $150 million dollars. Jeter is the type of player that will walk away from the game if he can’t perform any longer ala Joe DiMaggio. Even if he can play 100 games a year, it probably wouldn’t hurt to have his presence in the clubhouse. What other positions could Jeter play to make himself more valuable? Third? First? Second? Outfield? However, his bat profiles may not be as well at any other position than shortstop. Maybe he can play a similar
role with the Yankees that Omar Vizquel has with Chicago, Texas, and San Francisco the last few years. Of course, there is the question of what married life will do to Jeter. Reports indicate Jeter is getting married to actress Minka Kelly in November. Does he want to spend the next seven years on the road? Jeter should take a year to year contract, get his 3,000th hit, and enjoy the rest of his life, wife, and money.

Military Press Café Hollywood’s top comedians raise funds for Wounded Warrior Project The world-famous Laugh Factory and Los Angeles’ KABC 790 TalkRadio recently hosted a fundraiser to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and empower military members injured since Sept. 11, 2001. Over $1,850 was raised by the evening hosted by L.A. radio personalities Peter Tilden and Teresa Strasser. The all-star line-up featured Kevin Nealon, Paul Rodriguez, Mario Joyner, Mike Marino and other surprise guests. The Laugh Factory donated 100% of all tickets sales to the WWP. A Joke Backfires A preacher, who shall we say was “humor impaired,” attended a conference to help encourage and better equip pastors for their ministry. Among the speakers were many well known and dynamic speakers. One such boldly approached the pulpit and, gathering the entire crowd’s
attention, said, “The best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman that wasn’t my wife!” The crowd was shocked! He followed up by saying, “And that woman was my mother!” - The crowd burst into laughter and delivered the rest of his talk, which went over quite well. The next week, the pastor decided he’d give this humor thing a try, and use that joke in his sermon. As he surely approached the pulpit that sunny Sunday, he tried to rehearse the joke in his head. It suddenly seemed a bit foggy to him. Getting to the microphone he said loudly, “The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of another woman that was not my wife!” The congregation inhaled half the air in the room. After standing there for almost 10 seconds in the stunned silence, trying to recall the second half of the joke, the pastor finally blurted out, “...and I can’t remember who she was!”

e Captain John Smith Virginians know that Captain John Smith was one of the first American heroes. But because he was a proud and boastful man, it is difficult to know which parts of his life, as recorded in the written record, are fact and which are fiction. What many people may not know is that Smith’s adventures started even before Jamestown. Born in 1580 in Willoughby, England, John Smith left home at age 16 after his father died. He began his travels by joining volunteers in France who were fighting for Dutch independence from Spain. Two years later, he set off for the Mediterranean Sea, working on a merchant ship. In 1600 he joined Austrian forces to fight the Turks in the “Long War.” A valiant soldier, he was promoted to Captain while fighting in Hungary. He was fighting in Transylvania two years later in 1602. There he was wounded in battle, captured, and sold as a slave to a Turk. This Turk then sent Smith as a gift to his sweetheart in Istanbul. According to Smith, this girl fell in love with him and sent him to her brother to get training for Turkish imperial service. Smith reportedly escaped by murdering the brother and returned to Transylvania by fleeing through Russia and Poland. After being released from service and receiving a large reward, he traveled all through Europe and Northern Africa. He returned to England in the winter of 1604-05.

Here begins Captain John Smith’s American adventures. Apparently restless in England, Smith became actively involved with plans by the Virginia Company to colonize Virginia for profit, as had been granted by a charter from King James I. After setting sail on December 20, 1606, this famous expedition finally reached Virginia in April 1607 after enduring a lengthy voyage of over four months in three tiny ships. When the sealed box that listed the names of the seven council members who were to govern the colony was opened, Smith’s name was on the list. On May 13, 1607 the settlers landed at Jamestown ready to begin the task of surviving in a new environment. The harsh winter, lack of fresh water, and the spread of disease made life in Jamestown difficult for the settlers. Attacks by the native Algonquian Indians made life almost impossible. The Indians, hoping that the settlers would give up and leave, raided their camps, stealing pistols, gunpowder, and other necessary supplies. John Smith became leader of the colonists and did his best to fight off the Indians. In December 1607, he and some companions were ambushed by Indian deer hunters. After killing the other Englishmen with him, the Indians carried Smith back to their powerful chief, Powhatan, to decide his fate. Powhatan was apparently greatly impressed by Smith’s self-confidence as well as such mystical instruments as an ivory and glass pocket compass he carried with him. Smith was questioned about his colony and then made to take part in some sort of ritual or trial, after which, in keeping with an Indian custom, he was made a subordinate chief in the tribe. Powhatan’s 11 year old daughter, Pocahontas, took part in the ceremony in some way. Smith was constantly unsure of his fate, and he was convinced afterward that Pocahontas had saved his life. Smith was released in friendship after about four weeks of captivity and returned to Jamestown, guided by Indians. Meanwhile, dissent within the colony fermented due to
laziness, lack of supplies, and periodic attempts at desertion by many of the colonists. Personal conflicts among Smith and various leaders, as well as disagreements over new policies being formulated in London, added to the discontent. As a result, Smith left Jamestown to explore and map the Chesapeake Bay region and search for badly needed food supplies. Due to bad government and near chaos, Smith was eventually elected president of the local council in September 1608. He instituted a policy of rigid discipline, strengthened defenses, and he encouraged farming with this admonishment: “He who does not work, will not eat.” Because of his strong leadership, the settlement survived and grew during the next year. Unfortunately, Smith was accidentally injured by a gunpowder burn and had to return to England for treatment in October 1609, never to return to Virginia. In London he actively promoted the further colonization of Virginia, but was unpopular with the Virginia Company. In April 1614, he returned to the New World in a successful voyage to the Maine and Massachusetts Bay areas, which he named New England, with the approval of Prince Charles. He was denied further opportunities to return to America due to his independent nature and spent the rest of his life writing his memoirs and advice until his death in 1631 at age 51.

The Parallel to the Above Story If we had a John Smith as President of the United States, just think of all the corruption and freeloaders we could eliminate from the burden they place on society. If you tried to work the system and got caught, you’d be put behind bars — but they either get a slap on the wrist or (in most cases) they scream that the working people are prejuice and they continue to eat, sleep and play at the taxpayers’ expense. What will it take before someone steps forth and realizes that the working class has to work so hard that they do not have the time to spend on scamming the system. If the President, the Senate and the House of Representatives were involved in eliminating the handouts to the undeserving, we would not be in the financial mess we’re in today. For every one benefit — cash, food or service — that the government supplies to the unneedy... the bureacray employs two workers, and over two-thirds of the money goes for payroll. Why should the hard working citizens have to pay for this mess? One example of welfare waste is illegals that only have to show a receipt from the gas and electric company to receive benefits. It is illegal to ask if they are illegal! If any legal citizen deserves benefits, we must show proof of citizenship — drivers license, social security card or birth certificate. Does this make sense? JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE If he hadn’t been selling millions of records when Napster came along, Justin Timberlake thinks he might have been one of its users. Napster was a Web service allowing music fans to rip and exchange their own recordings without observing the niceties of royalties and copyrights, and it inspired a celebrated court battle with users charged as thieves and pirates. “When Napster hit the scene, I was 19 or 20,” he told me. “I had mixed feelings about it because I was the same age as all of those college kids that ended up playing the role of defendants in court. Had I not been in the music industry, I probably would have used it. At the same time, I was watching friends in the industry who were songwriters and were forced take up new jobs. All they do is write songs. They don’t have endorsement deals or sold-out shows. They were getting a small piece of the collective pie.” There is an irony, then, to be found in Timberlake playing the role of Sean Parker, the mercurial founder of Napster, in David Fincher’s “The Social Network,” one of this year’s Academy Award front-runners. The movie is based on the story of Mark Zuckerberg, who launched Facebook as a Harvard undergraduate and soon saw it become a phenomenon. The real Parker had a similar experience with Napster, and materialized in Zuckerberg’s life as a Svengali of the fast lane. “The Social Network” is on all the lists of Oscar contenders, and Timberlake is often mentioned as a best supporting actor candidate. Justin Timberlake? The perennial Trending Topic on Twitter? Yes, and why not? In one of the best films of the year, he provides a crucial performance, and he does it with confidence, bravado and heedless energy. It’s acting. because they stay within the parameters of their early fame. For Timberlake, fame was not launched at the Actor’s Studio or at Juilliard, but on “Star Search,” when he was 11. That led to stardom of sorts on “The Mickey Mouse Club,” and then big time when he became the lead singer of ‘N Sync. Then he went solo and started winning Grammys and going platinum, and -- well, nothing at that point could have predicted his casting as Sean Parker in “The Social Network.” Parker is a difficult role. Mark Zuckerberg is played by Jesse Eisenberg as a super-intelligent geek who likes to bash people in conversation. Parker sees him and raises him. This requires an actor with a lot of confidence and agility. Eisenberg, at 27, is very experienced. Timberlake, at 29, is new to the front ranks of feature films, with all due respect to “The Love Guru” and “Black Snake Moan.” Yet he embodies the Parker role and sells it persuasively. His Parker is a devious manipulator with a private agenda and an instinct for personal openings. He’s a spellbinder. The choice of Timberlake is not only good casting by David Fincher and his casting director, Laray Mayfield, but good casting out of left field. The Zuckerberg-Parker exchanges are often in a rapid-fire tempo that evokes screwball comedies. I asked if that took a lot of rehearsal. “Our rehearsal process was, in fact, all talking,” he said. “We never once got up from the table. We would go through the scene, just reading it. Then David Fincher, (writer) Aaron Sorkin and the actors who were in the scene would just sit and talk about what our characters were looking to accomplish in each moment. “For a character like Sean, who was so brilliantly constructed by Aaron, the overall goal was intact. Elizabeth Hurley Loves American Ambition The other day, writing about the British actress and her work with the Estee Lauder people and Breast Cancer Research, I find I have a few snippets of further insight for the beauteous Liz. First, she has lost a lot of weight and is as slim and trim a s any glamour queen. (“It’s called cutting out sweets and fats and being lactose intolerant!”) And when I showed her a photo of herself from the London Telegraph, she laughed: “Oh, that picture is two years old. But it reminds me. It was taken on a night when I was appearing with Elton John. We were giving awards to aspiring actors. So I’m up there holding the award and the photographers are yelling at me -- ‘Liz, look this way! Liz, show a bit of leg!’ And I was saying, ‘Excuse me, I’m just trying to give this actor an award.’ “Elton was so aggrieved by all this rowdiness that he totally lost his temper. He ripped off all his jewelry and just went insane. We have a video of this, which we like to show him to get him all
riled up again! He is so great!” WHEN I told Ms. Hurley that the British press criticizes her for being “so ambitious” she laughed. “Yes, you see in England, nobody is supposed to show that they ever works hard. It’s supposed to be about having inherited wealth that counts. So it’s just like in college where we used to always pretend that we weren’t really doing our schoolwork. One has to work secretly, on the side, in England. You’re not supposed to make an effort, so there I am working to beat the band -- designing, acting, running my organic farm, representing Estee Lauder and breast cancer research all over the world. “But I love America because here people treasure work. In England, one is not supposed to make an effort.” HAD A big laugh recently when I read that the daring Ice Road Truckers of Alaska and parts north were going to do a new show about driving in India.

“I NO longer advise anyone to get into comic strips. If I were graduating today, I’d be standing with my portfolio outside of Pixar,” says the king, Garry Trudeau, reflecting on his Pulitzer Prize-winning comic strip career. Just one more big change in the popular culture! This is the year that “Doonesbury” turned 40. And Rolling Stone’s Chip Kidd compares Trudeau to Tolstoy, “methodically constructing a large cast of complex and intriguing characters whom the reader comes to care about, then letting the great tsunami of current events envelop them all.” Just recently the body-tattooed rap star Lil Wayne -- ink even inscribed on the inside of his arms -- emerged from solitary confinement at NYC’s Rikers Island after an eight-month stay. (He was in solitary for having snuck in a banned MP3 player and headphones He was sent to Rikers in the first place on weapons charges.) Reporter Evan Serpick tells us that Lil
Wayne wants a jet plane with a recording studio on board to ride to see his folks in Florida. He wants to be working the minute he emerges, with all those new rap rhymes he has been putting down

while incarcerated. During his stay in jail, Wayne released “Right Above It,” which hit number six on the Hot 100. In August, he also released “I Am Not a Human Being,” which hit number one.
So, a prison record doesn’t seem to count against anyone anymore. Recently, the president of the United States said that his young daughters were indoctrinating him in the pleasures of Lil Wayne. If President Obama gets a load of the half-nude Lil Wayne with arms raised and pants falling off, maybe he might think twice about his girls’ rap enthusiasms. It’s no wonder you see Linda Fairstein, New York City’s former DA in charge of sex crimes, dining with her famous litigator husband, Justin Feldman -- and they are always at Primola on 2nd Avenue. When Linda sits down to write the thriller novels that made her well known and even inspired the creation of “Law & Order: SVU,” she always includes the restaurant and its staff in each book. There are many framed copies of Linda’s book covers on the walls at Primola and Linda is now on her 13th work of crime. Glimpsed in Primola -- Judy Miller, a professor of French lit at NYU, Susan Henshaw Jones, president of the Museum of the City of New York, the genius Gerry Laybourne, who created Nickelodeon and the Oxygen networks and Alison Bernstein of the Ford Foundation. But maybe you’d rather be reading about reality show stars whose names you never heard of before and whose faces you can’t place. That is what’s in most gossip columns these days.

world of hyper-smart college kids. I can’t think of a writer working today that could have done a more masterful job. If you’re asking about which role I would have preferred? Parker. Hands down. The way that character was written was just too much fun. “But I felt like these two characters probably suffered from the same fears and insecurities. They both invented something to connect with the world comfortably, too. Mark invented Facebook. Sean invented Sean Parker.” I gather no one in the movie met Zuckerberg. Did you meet, or did you already know, Parker? “I met him briefly in New York. At the time, I hadn’t been cast in the film but it was speculated that I might be playing the role. We spoke for a second and he seemed like a really nice guy.” I observed that Parker has dialogue where he brags that he brought the music industry to its knees, and put record stores out of business. There’s some irony in a multimillion-album seller like Timberlake saying this dialogue, yes? “To be honest, it really didn’t hit me until I screened the film for the first time. When you are embodying a character, you believe every part of what they are feeling and saying and doing. It could have been the iPod that he invented. It was more important for me to find out why he was bragging about it, I felt. I think any bravado that came out of the character was a safety mechanism to hide all of the darker parts of him. But, in my personal opinion, I think it takes more than one person to bring down something like the music industry. Much like it took more than one person to make Facebook a billion-dollar company.” You were a gifted kid who basically overnight found himself a star and then a mogul. Same story with Sean Parker and Mark Zuckerberg. Were there Parker figures in your early career? “The music industry is full of them. I’ll leave it at that.”

“I have never put the make on a girl in my life. I just don’t know how to do it. My instincts are always to leave it to the woman.” This remark, incredibly, comes from the most dissolute looking of all the Rolling Stones -- the indestructible Keith Richards. Keith confesses his shy attitude in his coming autobiography, “Life,” which is excerpted in the latest issue of Rolling Stone. There’s Keith on the cover, looking like 50 miles of bad road. Drugs and drink and high living are almost ridiculously obvious. Once upon a time he was really rather handsome and sexy. Oh, well -- he doesn’t seem to mind, at this point. THE EXCERPT from Rolling Stone seems to concentrate on the early years of the Stones, when the group’s founder and original leader, Brian Jones, was freefalling into addiction and depression. Brian was also madly in love with model/actress Anita Pallenberg but he was insanely jealous and irrational. Keith writes: “Brian was never good at connecting with Anita. I learned later just how violent he had become with her as the downward slide began -- throwing knives, glasses, punches, forcing her to barricade herself behind sofas. She thought, at the start at least, that Brian’s

rampages were quite funny.” Eventually, of course -- with broken ribs to show for it -- even Pallenberg, whom Keith describes as “a tough girl,” wanted out. Though she still cared for Brian, he wasn’t physically (terrible asthma) well, along with other issues. Keith stepped in, in more ways than one -- “Sir Galahad, again” he notes wryly. In the end, Brian Jones was ousted from the band, and died shortly after, drowned in his pool, although this book excerpt doesn’t cover that still-mysterious tragedy. Nor does it get into the tumultuous Keith/Mick Jagger relationship. Keith also comments here on his infamous drug-taking and partying: “It just happened. It was a search for oblivion, I suppose, though not intentionally. Being in a band, you are cooped up a lot and the more famous you get, the more of a prison you find yourself in. The convolutions you go through just not to be yourself for a few hours.” Keith insists, however, “I can improvise when I’m unconscious. This is one of my amazing tricks, apparently. I try to stay in contact with the Keith Richards I know. But I do know there’s another one that lurks, occasionally, about ... there’s a demon inside me, and there’s a demon in everybody else.” Rolling Stone, which knows from rowdy music industry tell-alls, declares Keith Richards’ “Life” to be one of the “greatest rock memoirs ever.” I’ll have to decide when I read the entire book, but I did find this little bit surprisingly well written and compelling.

Charlie Sheen says hotel room incident was
“OVERBLOWN” And where’s his $150,000 watch?
“Two and a Half Men” star Charlie Sheen is downplaying claims he trashed a room at a swanky NYC hotel early Tuesday while reportedly intoxicated — which his reps have denied. The actor sent text messages to RadarOnline.com, writing, “The story is totally overblown and overplayed as far as the reality of the scenario.” Sheen reportedly lost control after partying with an unnamed woman, and began throwing things in the posh hotel room, while the frightened woman hid in a closet. His ex-wife, Denise Richards, and their two kids were staying in the room next door. The New York Police Department said Sheen was found naked and appeared “intoxicated” when they responded to the 911 call, and they took him to a nearby hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Sheen’s rep said in a statement, “Charlie had an adverse allergic reaction to some medication and was taken to the hospital.” The actor was released shortly afterward and has since returned to L.A. When asked how he was feeling, Sheen texted to RadarOnline, “Oh my man, I’m fine. FAIR GAME It seems to come down to this: The Bush administration had decided to go to war in Iraq. Scrambling to find reasons to justify the war, it seized on reports that the African nation of Niger has sold uranium to Iraq. Joseph Wilson, a former ambassador to Niger, was sent to seek evidence. He found none. In fact, he found such sales would have been physically impossible. His report was ignored. We went to war. The non-existent uranium sales were cited. He wrote an article in The New York Times reporting on what he found, or didn’t find, in Niger. In an attempt to discredit him, someone in the administration leaked the information to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Novak that Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA agent. Cheney’s aide, Scooter Libby, was tried and convicted of obstruction of justice and perjury, sentenced to prison, and his sentence quickly commuted by Bush. Cheney was angry he wasn’t pardoned outright. In the film, we see that Plame, under a variety of aliases, ran secret networks of informants in Baghdad and other Middle Eastern cities. When the administration blew her cover, several of her informants were killed; some reports say 70. Then the Bush spin doctors leaked the story that
she was only a CIA “secretary.” The spinning is still going on. Doug Liman’s “Fair Game,” based on books by Valerie Plame and Joseph Wilson and starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, is unusually bold for a fictionalization based on real events. Using real names and a good many facts, it argues: (1) Saddam had no WMD; (2) the CIA knew it; (3) the White House knew it; (4) the agenda of Cheney and his White House neocons required an invasion of Iraq no matter what; and (5) therefore, the evidence was ignored and we went to war because of phony claims. Well. That’s what the film says. There will no doubt be dissent. Few people are happy to be portrayed as liars and betrayers. What amazes me is that “Fair Game” doesn’t play the game of using fictional names. They’re all right there, including Cheney personally ordering the intelligence to be falsified. Naomi Watts looks uncannily like the real-life Plame, but that’s beside the point; what I related to was the serious, workmanlike tone of her Plame, who doesn’t see herself as a heroine but as a skilled operative. She has scenes where she devastates other characters with what she knows about them, and how she can use that information. Sean Penn plays Ambassador Wilson, more
combative than his wife, outraged by the way administration leakers try to destroy them. The film is realistic about the ways the Plame-Wilson marriage almost failed. What’s effective is how matterof-fact “Fair Game” is. This isn’t a lathering, angry attack picture. Wilson and Plame are both seen as loyal government employees, not particularly political until they discover the wrong information. The implication is that if the Bush administration hadn’t suppressed their information and smeared them, there might have been no Iraq war, and untold thousands of lives would have been saved. This topic has been so poisoned by misinformation that a rational discussion seems impossible. I suppose the question becomes, how well does “Fair Game” work as a movie? I suspect it will work better the more you walk in agreeing with it. The portrait it paints of the Wilson-Plame marriage is a very personal one, based on conflicting personalities under pressure. Penn plays Wilson as a hotheaded idealist, fueled by outrage. Watts makes Plame an ideal spy: secretive, concealing, under the radar. Perhaps she would rather her husband had bitten the bullet like a good soldier. They’re surrounded
by press attention, and she finds her CIA work belittled by the administration spin doctors and her contacts overseas trashed. Joe obviously didn’t prevent the war. If he’d kept quiet, her own CIA work would not have been destroyed.

T
en years ago, not many wine drinkers had even heard of the Syrah grape . If so, they knew of it as the backbone of many French Rhone blends. But Americans like to go against the tide of European traditions, and do things our own way. So along with the Australians, who hold the same rebellious streak, we began to grow and bottle Syrah as a single grape varietal, rather than a part of a mix. California was at the forefront of the revolution with a band of rebels dubbed the “Rhone Rangers”, who grew plots of yummy Syrah in their central coastal vineyards. The effort paid off as the popularity of Syrah grew overnight, and is now a favorite of many wine lovers, with it’s earthy fig and plum nuances. But don’t be alarmed, it’s still got enough fruit to round out the balance. The Aussies saw the potential of Syrah as well and began growing fields of Shiraz. It’s spelled different, but is basically the same grape, just grafted on to a different rootstock that thrives in the Australian heat. Due to the heat, Shiraz will be darker and bolder, so watch out!
I call Syrah the “New Merlot” because Merlot was originally the first red wine that people remembered to order by name. This was due to it being mentioned in a few movies and a hand full of TV shows like “Thirtysomething” . But eventually, people wanted something with a little more depth than the traditionally fruity Merlot. They have now discovered Syrah, and are delighting by the bolder and richer flavors of the once French grape. Syrah is now just as popular on the shelves as Cabernet Savignon and Zinfindel. We have American ingenuity and California sunshine to thank for that, so run out and grab a bottle of deep purple bliss.

Very few books make me sit back and draw in my breath, but here’s a new one from my old acquaintance, the so-called Cherry Vanilla. She has finally put her saga of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll down between hard covers. “Between covers” partially describes this girl of the decades that gave us The Beatles, the last of Elvis, David Bowie, Sting, the Police, hippies, civic unrest, gay liberation, eras that had drugs of all types on the menu and sex on the brain. Ms. Vanilla has titled her opus “Lick Me: How I Became Cherry Vanilla” and if you want to read an epoch-spanning chronicle about what these revolutionary eras were like, this is it! My hair almost stood on end reading this book where I knew so many of the participants. Though I was definitely around through all of it (Woodstock, the Copacabana, the Fillmore East, Andy Warhol, etc.), I remained somehow outside looking in and quite naive. But I met most of these players so it was catnip reading to find out what they were “really” like from Brigid Berlin to Kris Kristofferson to Lance Loud. Besides being a sex addict, Ms. Vanilla also became a rock ‘n’ roll arranger and manager, an ad executive, PR expert, performance artist, writer and poet. She is still going strong, though she says she now lives without sex. Amazing! I ALWAYS like to pass on “nice” gossip. Hmmm ... maybe that’s why the New York Post fired me. Anyway, I was chatting with a person who deals with Mariah Carey on a regular basis. Here’s the dish: “She’s totally real. What you see is what you get. She isn’t one way onstage or on the red carpet and different when you are with her privately. She has a great sense of humor, especially about herself and her image. She’s not a phony. I like her a lot!” That’s exactly the kind of high praise I’ve heard from friends of Mariah, including director Lee Daniels. And whenever I’ve spoken with her or met her, Mariah’s sense of humor and “realness” are what always impress me. And she has great skin, too.

Oceanside’s VA Clinic provides care for North County veterans One of the VA’s newest county health clinics has been opening for business for several months. The new clinic augments services for North County veterans and expands the types of specialty care available. The clinic is located at 3500 Seagate Way, in the Seagate Corporate Center on Ranch del Oro Road, north of Oceanside Blvd. The 65,465-square-foot VA Oceanside Clinic will provide services for up to 100,000 outpatient visits per year. Initially, the clinic will provide primary care, mental health, audiology, optometry, women’s health and Page 46 November 15, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS
laboratory services. Future expansion will include radiology, dental, and rehabilitation therapy as well as specialty care including dermatology, orthopedics, urology and compensation and pension evaluation services. VASDHS is expecting to staff the new facility with approximately 90 employees. The opening of this clinic coincided with the closing of the VA’s Vista Clinic. All patients enrolled at Vista were transferred to the new Oceanside facility.
