Things to Know About AJ McCarron’s Girlfriend, Miss Alabama, Katherine Webb
By Rebecca Macatee
I
f Alabama had a royal couple, it’d definitely be these two. Miss Alabama USA herself, Katherine Webb, stole the spotlight Monday night as her quarterback boyfriend AJ McCarron led the Crimson Tide to a victory over Notre Dame. So just who is the brunette beauty that seemed to get an inordinate amount of screentime? Here are five things you need to know about the reigning Twitter queen who gained 90,000 followers in a single night. See how Katherine stole the spotlight at Monday’s game 1. She’s a Southern Belle: According to Katherine’s Miss Universe bio, the 23-year-old was born in Montgomery, Ala., attended middle school in Columbus, Ga., and then attended Auburn University. After graduating in 2011 with a degree in Business Management and Administration, she moved back to Columbus. 2. She Works at Chick-fil-A: Bet AJ gets all the extra Polynesian sauce he wants! Katherine is a training director at the fast food franchise’s Columbus location. Check out our NFL Sunday recap 3. She Also Works as a Model: Well, yeah, that one’s a given. Per her bio, Katherine models professionally for clients in New York, Miami and Atlanta. She also modeled on the cover of Alabama Weddings. (No, no, she and AJ aren’t engaged—yet—but Katherine sure makes one pretty ‘Bama bride!)

‘Johnny Football’ As Johnny Manziel rode in a golf cart after Texas A&M’s 41-13 rout of Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl on Friday night, he repeatedly heard the same cheer. “Whoop!” Aggies fans hollered at the redshirt freshman quarterback as he passed them in the bowels of Cowboys Stadium and they made the hand gesture for the age-old Texas A&M expression. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Manziel had once again given Texas A&M fans plenty to hoot and holler about as he racked up a bowl-record 516 total yards and four touchdowns on his way to being named the game’s offensive most valuable player.

What price U.S. citizenship? By Cal Thomas HONG KONG — We read about famous people like French film star Gerard Depardieu, who moved to Belgium to avoid a 75 percent income tax on millionaires proposed by France’s Socialist government (a measure rejected last week by a French council, though French leadership has vowed to resubmit a similar proposal). Then there is Eduardo Saverin, who took the extreme step of giving up his U.S. citizenship and could see a savings of $39 million on his Facebook investment, according to the research firm Wealth-X. He says business reasons, rather than high taxes, were his primary motivation.
I had read about financially motivated expatriates but never knew one who had taken the ultimate step until I visited with my longtime friend “Sam” (I’m withholding his real name to protect his current employment). Sam works for a large investment firm. He has lived here for the last 25 years. He says that five years ago, he began thinking he could no longer “afford to be an American.” Contributing to his decision was the cost of sending his five children to college. Even though he and his wife pay taxes on a home in California, the state has denied them in-state college tuition, meaning it could cost them $50,000 per child. While there is a $95,100 earned U.S. income tax exclusion,
Sam says it isn’t enough to substantially reduce his U.S. taxes and still cover his costs. Here is how burdensome U.S. tax laws have become: Seven years ago, Sam left a major investment banking firm based in the U.S. to join another international bank. The law required that his 14 years of pension savings become current income and taxed it at a rate of 35 percent. He says he could not roll over the account due to a “quirk” in the law. Hong Kong citizens are taxed at a rate of only 15 percent. Another consideration, he says, was the refusal by Hong Kong banks to allow him to open a securities account. The reason? “None wanted to deal with onerous U.S. reporting re-

quirements. My own bank could not even open an account for me to invest in local securities.” Sam says his decision was “emotionally difficult. My parents worried I would not be able to return to see them in the U.S. (He managed to get a 10-year tourist visa.) I would have to give up the right to vote or run for political office. I was concerned that others would call me a traitor or deserter.” “I had paid over $1 million in U.S. taxes but didn’t receive any benefits, nor did my wife and kids. (She maintains her U.S. citizenship.) As I saw the massive U.S. deficit continue to climb, it became clear that the government would likely raise taxes further. I finally decided to expatriate. ... A dozen of my friends who have lived over 10 years in Asia have done the same. We can no longer afford to be American citizens.” Eugene Chow, an attorney who specializes in helping Americans give up their U.S. citizenship, told The Wall Street Journal’s “Asia Today” program that while such actions continue to be rare, they are increasing. He says people pay a high price for giving up their citizenship. Not only is there an “exit tax,” but all appreciated assets, including a home, are assessed a 15 percent capital gains tax, even if they haven’t been sold. Chow says, “The IRS is essentially outsourcing its compliance rules to non-American-related companies and they are saying to Americans, ‘We don’t want your business.’ So that’s more of a practical reason for why some people choose to give up their passports — to make it a less complicated life living overseas.” While the media love to focus on billionaires, says Chow, most who renounce U.S. citizenship are “people who have changed circumstances; people ... who have lived and worked (overseas) for the last 10-15 years, who might have married a foreign spouse and who believe their future is overseas, rather than back in the U.S.” With so many foreigners wanting to become U.S. citizens, it’s still a shock to know someone who has relinquished his citizenship. It is another reason for simplifying the U.S. tax code. America should want to retain people with the skills and experience of people like Sam, who have contributed more than tax money to their (now former) country.
Commentary John Boehner the speaker of the house has been criticized by the Democrats for not passing the $60 billion bill for the victims of hurricane Sandy. Mr Boehner and the majority of Republicans in the house have refused to support the bill. Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey who is a Republican has criticized and shown his displeasure for John and the Republican Party. The problem with the bill is that only $9 billion goes to the relief of Sandy victims, 51 billion is nothing but additional monies added on by the Democrats which is totally absurd and one of the main reasons our country is continuously going deeper into debt. This is why we must stop all politicians from abusing our tax dollars for porkbarrel self-interest. Furious over House Speaker John Boehner’s sudden decision to kill a promised vote on a massive relief package to rebuild New Jersey, New York, and other states ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, Christie yesterday used his bully pulpit to attack the Ohio Republican for “duplicity” and “callous indifference to the suffering of the people of my state.” One hour later, a chastened and politically weakened Boehner swallowed his opposition in the face of attacks by Christie and a slew of New Jersey and New York leaders from both political parties. Less than 16 hours after he had cancelled votes on the Hurricane Sandy aid package and refused to take Christie’s repeated phone calls, Boehner agreed to schedule a vote tomorrow on $9.7 billion in funding. The money will enable a federal flood relief program that was scheduled to run out of money in two days to continue processing claims
Porkbarrel Spending On Capitol Hill By Patrick Frye www.inquisitr.com
T
he Hurricane Sandy relief bill is filled with pork spending according to third party analysts. The relief package is ostensibly intended for Hurricane Sandy victims, but in reality the Democratic Senate is exploiting loopholes in the budget process to pile on new so-called emergency spending. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, the spending-filled Sandy relief bill was shot down previously by the House because of the high level of pork. The craziest part is that at that time the bill stood at $30 billion and now Democrats have stuffed even more pork spending in, doubling the cost to taxpayers at $60 billion. Republicans like New Jersey governor Chris Christie have blasted Congress for delaying the Sandy relief bill. According to US News, House Speaker John Boehner has responded by promising to vote Friday on a $9 billion infusion of cash to the National Flood Insurance Program and a vote January 15 on the remaining $51 billion proposal. This new plan by Boehner sounds like he’s trying to separate the pork spending from the actual relief money. Hopefully, Democrats will find that a reasonable compromise. According to Before It’s News the previous bills were shot down only because the Democratic Senate version of the bill was comprised of
85 percent pork spending that has nothing to do with Hurricane Sandy relief. American Majority Action spokesman Ron Meyer said the Senate Democratcreated Sandy relief bill is packed with tons of pork barrel spending, some of which won’t even occur until after 2013: “Why was this in the emergency bill for Sandy? It doesn’t make any sense. Only $1 out of every $6 — $9 billion of the $60 billion will be spent in 2013. That means 85 percent doesn’t come until 2014 and beyond. That’s not immediate relief. What this bill is fundamentally is a pork bill. It’s disgraceful to load a bill like this that has good motives, that has good intentions that is going to help people, with pork. Why are you putting your own projects in it. It’s disgraceful. It’s typical of Washington.” An example of how disasters can sneak in pork spending and other types of fraud is relayed by The Heritage Foundation: “Fraud related to Hurricane Katrina spending is estimated to top $2 billion. In addition, debit cards provided to hurricane victims were used to pay for Caribbean vacations, NFL tickets, Dom Perignon champagne, ‘Girls Gone Wild’ videos, and at least one sex change operation.” What do you think about the antics of Congress now that you know about the pork spending stuffed into the Sandy relief bill? Navy Medicine Rolls Out New Campaign to Deter ‘Bath Salts’ Designer Drug Use
IT’S NOT A FAD . . . IT’S A NIGHTMARE
By Valerie A. Kremer, U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Public Affairs
N
avy Medicine announced the launch of a new informational video and poster regarding the health risks and dangers of the synthetic amphetamine known as “bath salts” and other designer drugs, Dec. 20. The public service announcement video and poster will be distributed for display throughout the fleet and are available for download at http:// www.med.navy.mil/Pages/Syntheticdrugs.aspx. The new media products focus on the dangers of bath salts and are part of the long-term awareness and deterrence campaign Navy Medicine launched last year on synthetic and designer drugs. This effort is also part of an overall Navy communications plan with partners at the Naval Personnel Command and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and other commands. The education and awareness campaign from Navy Medicine supports the Navy’s zero-tolerance policy on designer drug use, as well as highlights the real and present risks of bath salts. The campaign’s goal is to decrease the number of active-duty service members who use designer drugs like bath salts and the synthetic marijuana “Spice” because they are falsely marketed as a “legal” way to get high. According to Navy Medicine psychiatry resident Lt. George Loeffler at the Naval Medical Center San Diego,, the adverse health effects from bath salt use can range from lack of appetite to kidney failure, muscle spasms, severe paranoid delusions, and psy-
chosis. Several cases of long-term inpatient hospitalization and suicide have been reported and Loeffler has firsthand experience treating service members at Navy military treatment facilities with these symptoms. “I would say not just as the naval officer, but as your doctor, bath salts will not only jack up your family and your

career, it will jack up your mind and body too,” said Loeffler in the PSA now available online. The Bath Salts campaign’s slogan, “Bath salts: It’s not a fad...It’s a nightmare,” reflects the hallucinogenic effect of bath salts, which are a non-regulated designer drug comprised of a synthetic cathinone, or amphetamine,

that can have a dangerous or debilitating effect on the user. “As the leader of the medical community for the Navy and Marine Corps, I cannot emphasize enough to our Sailors and Marines that using synthetic drugs really is just like playing Russian roulette with their health, not to mention their career,” said Vice Adm. Matthew L. Nathan, U.S. Navy surgeon general said in an editorial written for the Union Tribune in San Diego earlier this year. The bath salts campaign further supports the Navy Surgeon General’s mission for all commanding officers and others in positions of leadership to be fully engaged in their command’s implementation plan to continually communicate and educate all hands as to the Navy’s zero-tolerance policy on designer drug use. “The U.S. military represents a microcosm of our much larger population and in many ways strives to be
a reflection of the society we serve, so we share many of the same health and safety issues as the general population, including the increased use of these dangerous and debilitating drugs — which not only affect our service members’ health, but also our readiness as a military force,” said Nathan. “For nearly two years now, Navy leaders have taken a multitiered approach to combating this escalating issue in our forces, and with our partners in the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Naval PersonnelCommand and throughout our naval enterprise, we have made progress in deterring and detecting use.” Nathan affirmed that the Navy will continue to highlight the issue of synthetic drug use by delivering sustained and targeted messages throughout the Navy and Marine Corps. “We cannot over-communicate this issue,” said Nathan. “Accountability for those who abuse these substances will help deter their use.” Navy Medicine is a global health care network of more than 63,000 Navy medical personnel around the world who provide high quality health care to more than one million eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ship, in the air, under the sea and on the battlefield. GUN CONTROL? Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal came out in favor of gun control restrictions in a Tuesday morning appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Over 30 Years experience
“I spent a career carrying typically either a M16, and later a M4 carbine,” he said. “And a M4 carbine fires a .223 caliber round, which is 5.56 millimeters, at about 3,000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. It’s designed to do that. That’s what our soldiers ought to carry.” Said McChrystal, “I personally don’t think there’s any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America. I believe that we’ve got to take a serious look — I understand everybody’s desire to have whatever they want — but we have to protect our children and our police and we have to protect our population. And I think we have to take a very mature look at that.” McChrystal, though he resigned in disgrace in 2010 after a Rolling Stone article, is still revered by many as a top general, and his comments are significant for a former member of the military. If he does continue to advocate for gun control, he could be a significant voice in a movement whose opposition appeals to machismo. Asked what his message was to the National Rifle Association and the House Judiciary Committee, he said, “I think we have to look at the situation in America. The number of people killed by firearms is extraordinary compared to other nations. I don’t think we’re a bloodthirsty culture, and we need to look at everything we can do to safeguard our people.” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a co-founder and backer of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, praised McChrystal later in the program. “Stanley McChrystal is a guy who has more crediblity than I ever will have in terms of guns and the damage that guns can do,” he said. “He’s devoted his life to public service. But Stanley McChrystal can be as good a spokesman as can the five of us.

Things That Must End in 2013 For all of humanity’s greatness—the pyramids, the Hoover Dam, our capacity to love—human beings have proven ourselves quite capable of doing truly disgusting things, also, including waging wars, acting upon greed, and wearing those godforsaken toe shoes. In an effort to build a more just, rational, and aesthetically pleasing future, here is a list of things Gawker.com is banning in 2013. Be sure to either immediately stop doing the actions listed here, or, if it’s an object that’s being banned, a toe shoe, perhaps, incinerate it in a trash can. The civilized world thanks you! • Mustache nonsense: Mustaches on champagne flutes, mustaches on t-shirts, mustaches on hats, MUSTACHE FINGER TATTOOS. It’s an unwritten rule that nothing this ubiquitous is funny, but I’m not sure the mustache thing was ever funny. It is facial hair; get over it. • T-shirt companies: Oh, god, please, no more t-shirt companies in 2013. Do you know how many people are already making t-shirts? Thousands and thousands on Etsy alone, and with everything on them from “witty” sayings like “eat kale” to pictures of Jeff Goldblum. We do not need anyone else to exert brain power in an effort to come up with more goddamn t-shirts. • The trend of pop stars calling their fans specific names: Lady GaGa has Little Monsters, Nicki Minaj has Barbies and Kens, Bieber has Beliebers, One
Direction has Directioners. Why do we do this annoying thing? Let’s just go back to calling people “fans” in 2013. • $300 headphones: Know the best part about buying $300 headphones instead of just wearing cheap, simple, and effective earbuds like everyone else? Not being able to hear people say they feel embarrassed for you. If you are not a record producer or a DJ, stop buying $300 headphones in 2013. • Getting tattoos on your face: About to get a tattoo on your face? A tattoo of the Mitt Romney “R,” maybe? Before going under the needle, check to see if you’re a famous rapper. If you are not, do not get a tattoo on your face. Not even rappers should do that, but Gucci Mane is

not known for his common sense. • Skinny jeans: I still wear skinny jeans sometimes, but I probably shouldn’t. That shit is from 2007, guys. • Drop-crotch pants: Is this a thing anywhere else in the United States besides New York and Los Angeles? Regardless, drop-crotch pants need to be hunted down to whatever corners of the earth in which they exist and totally extinguished. • Toe shoes: What happens when you accidentally step in a pile of puke with these nightmares on your feet? Do you get your fingers in there and clean the vomit out from between the toes with your bare hands? That is revolting. These are revolting. • Karmin: You’ve had more than a year to get your fill of these guys’ treacly, watered-down versions of otherwise fine songs. Hopefully that was enough time to develop a deep dislike for them, like a rational person, be-
cause Karmin is not allowed to enter 2013. • Talking incessantly about Apple products: It’s funny that Apple’s most famous commercial was about releasing brain dead zombies from the technology status quo, and now you can’t swing an iPhone without some other Apple-obsessed maniac evangelizing at you about how “THIS IS THE MOST INTUITIVE AND BEAUTIFUL PRODUCT ON THE MARKET!” Then there are the people who put the Apple stickers on their cars, so that other drivers may know they have an expensive computer. Oy vey. Great, you love a multibillion-dollar corporation. • Dubstep: Dubstep is unlistenable garbage. No more dubstep in 2013.

With his 35mm Voigtlander camera, this peaceful warrior captured on film the unique perspective of one who wanted to heal, not kill. Then with ambulance windows covered, and using battery power, Cobb plugged in his Kodak portable enlarger and—under less than ideal conditions—developed film and printed photographs depicting this war’s destructive path and the enduring spirit in the faces of those who suffered unimaginable horror. Cobb’s lifelong belief that we are all brothers is in these images; it is the undercurrent that sweeps the book along. Chargers Report: NFL, ‘experts’ suffering short term memory loss By Art Garcia Jr. It appears the east coast bias is rearing its ugly head once again. When Baltimore Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis announced last week that he will retire at the end of the season, we’ve been inundated with stories of his greatness both on and off the field. And when he’s not only compared to, but rated higher than the likes of Hall of Famer’s Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Jack Lambert and Mike Singletary, one has to realize just how lucky we have been to have witnessed one of the all-time greatest players to ever grace the gridiron. However, after listening to all the talking heads on both radio and television boast about the accolades of Lewis, I noticed there was one name glaringly missing from not only the linebacker list, but the greatest player list as well. That name is the late, great, Junior Seau. Oh, how they soon forget. How all these so-called experts failed to mention Seau’s name in the same breathe as Lewis and the others is a travesty. In the 1990’s, Junior Seau was the Ray Lewis of the National Football League before Lewis was drafted out
of the University of Miami in 1996. Blessed with size, speed and desire to be the best player in the NFL, Seau possessed the mental and physical attributes to literally carry his hometown team, the San Diego Chargers, on his shoulders and lead them to a Super Bowl. And as impressive as Lewis’ performance was in the Ravens 24-9 victory over the Colts in the wildcard playoff game last weekend – he led the team with 13 tackles despite having missed nearly the entire season because of a torn triceps – it doesn’t hold a candle to the performance
CAREER EDUCATION
Seau displayed in the 1994 AFC Championship Game. Playing with a pinched nerve in his neck which left him virtually onearmed out on the field, Seau willed the Chargers to a 17-13 victory over the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers by recording some 16 tackles. Although Lewis’ accolades during a 17-year career includes two defensive player of the year awards and a Super Bowl MVP, Seau’s career stats are equally impressive. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, during a 20-year NFL career, Seau was selected to the Pro Bowl 12 times and finished a Hall of Fame career with 56.5 sacks; 18 interceptions; 11 forced fumbles; 18 fumble recoveries; 1 touchdown and 1,849 tackles. If, in fact, Lewis does retire at the end of this season, his career stats prior to the Ravens’ playoff run this season includes 13 Pro Bowls; 41.5 sacks; 31 interceptions; 19 forced fumbles; 20 fumble recoveries; 3 touchdowns and 2,050 tackles. Trying to rate the greatest player at each position is virtually impossible because there are so many variables to consider – How much better could Butkus have been if he played in this era where modern medicine could
have saved his knees and extended his career? The fact is that any list of all-time greatest football players that doesn’t include Junior Seau is an invalid list. Seau’s name deserves to be mentioned side-by-side with the names listed above. Like Lewis, he had the speed to chase down running backs sideline-to-sideline; he played with the ferocity and toughness of Butkus and Nitschke; and like Lambert and Singletary – he not only led the defense into battle each and every Sunday and made every teammate around him better, but he had that same psychopathic stare into the offensive backfield the left many quarterbacks shaking in their cleats. Perhaps better than any of those other great linebackers, Seau could anticipate the snap count of an opposing quarterback like no other. The Endzone: The Chargers hiring of Tom Telesco for the general manager position should bring the same type of excitement to Chargers fans as the hiring of Bobby Beathard in 1990 and John Butler in 2001. Telesco, 40, was the vice president of football operations this past year for the Indianapolis Colts and he cut his teeth for 15 years in the scouting department learning from Bill Polian. Under Polian, the Colts won at least 12 regular season games a year from 20022009 and won the AFC South division title in seven out of eight seasons from 2003-2010.

Johnny Manzel Heisman trophy winner His jaw-dropping performance, highlighted by a dazzling 23-yard tightrope touchdown run ended with a kangaroo hop into the end zone for the game’s first score, was the exclamation point to an electrifying 11-2 season under first-year coach Kevin Sumlin, the most victories for the program since 1998. “Johnny Manziel is everything he was billed to be,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said of Manziel after he rushed for 229 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns and was 22 of 34 passing for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Manziel has also been an answer to prayers for Texas A&M fans. He
has not only restored their pride after years of being little brother to Texas, but given them newfound confidence in this the Aggies first year of the daunting SEC. Remember, just a year ago, folks were still questioning their move to the league. Just like they wondered if Sumlin’s frenetic, spread offense even had a chance in the traditionally defensively dominated league. Oh, and back then the Aggies weren’t even sure about their starting quarterback. “It’s been crazy,” said Manziel, who became only the fourth FBS quarterback with 20 TDs rushing and 20 passing in the same season. “It’s been a rollercoaster to see how things have played out from the first game to now and what things have played out in my life.” But with all of those doubts erased, come even bigger questions. Like how will Manziel fare without standout junior left tackle Luke Joeckel, who is likely to leave early for April’s NFL draft in which he is already being projected as the first overall pick. Joeckel is smart enough to take the money, knowing that as much as Aggies’ faithful tell him he could win a national championship next season, the reality is he and his teammates were a couple of plays away from losing five games this season. Then there’s the task of replacing offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who left last month to become coach of Texas Tech and was a big part of the

Texas A&M averaging more than 40 points per game and breaking the SEC record Friday night with their 7,261 total yards this season. Running backs coach Clarence McKinney aced his audition calling plays, as evidenced by the Aggies’ Cotton Bowl record of 633 yards offensively, and certainly is worthy of succeeding Kingsbury, but innovativeness will be the key. Because with most SEC teams having been shredded by Texas A&M’s scheme this season, league foes like Alabama coach Nick Saban are already making adjustments for Year Two. It’s already in evident in the way they are recruiting faster and more athletic linebackers to try to keep up with Manziel. But the question is about the face of Texas A&M, Mr. Johnny Football himself, not necessarily on the field, but off it. He was arrested after an early morning fight in June and still faces three counts in connection to the incident, but maintains he has matured since then. Yet instead of taking a low-profile approach to his newfound fame, Manziel has been front and center, as in sitting courtside at NBA games, which prompted questions about the appearances, despite him being from a wealthy family. “The spotlight’s always on me,” Manziel said. “I know that going into everything. I know that I
Johnny’s girlfriend ain’t too bad either can’t go anywhere without someone probably knowing who I am and I accept that. I’m fine with that.” Since Texas A&M’s upset of Alabama in November, Manziel has had a one-man security detail consisting of Texas A&M University police lieutenant Ben Crenshaw, who accompanies him to all football-related activities. Crenshaw recalled how a man followed Texas A&M to each of its eight stops one day seeking autographs and photographs during Texas A&M’s bowl preparation in the Dallas area. “He becomes more popular every day,” Crenshaw said. And that’s what scares some of those closest to Manziel. “I pray for him every day,” said a friend of Manziel. A specific prayer that Manziel not succumb to his newfound fame and all the temptations that come with the rare mix of being a college football superstar with access to significant money. It’s a prayer Aggies fans should also probably recite

Gossip & Entertainment
‘Django Unchained’ -- A classic of comic savagery, outrageous satire and real history By Liz Smith “The movie ‘Django Unchained’ has something to offend everyone,” as almost every critic of this dynamite film experience has written and said. The following isn’t haut movie analysis, just a visceral reaction. The Quentin Tarantino movie may be the funniest movie ever made for psychotic sadists and us just plain folks. “The Texas Chainsaw” massacre meets the genteel Old South. Add to this that most of the direction and
acting is great and in spite of the gore and deafening crack of whiplashes and bullets being fired nonstop, it is beautifully made. And, violence aside, it is wonderful to look at. And my favorite moment in its comic and unbelievable savagery (it is about the American experience with African slavery) happens near the end when director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino does an explosive acting scene himself. (More! More acting, Quentin, you are a natural.) You will love our movie idol and ide-
alist leading man Leonardo DiCaprio as an over-the-top “South-run” gentleman of bloody tastes and excessive breeches of conduct, which he carries off with rotting teeth and his unusual horrifying style. (Who can forget this actor’s sweet youthful beginning as Gilbert Grape? And he hasn’t made a career misstep yet.) I just love Leonardo, whom I have never been so fortunate as to meet. He has risen above his contemporaries because he keeps completely to his own self, his private style and minding his own business. Such a big talent! But it is the incredibly sexy and smart Jamie Foxx as Django who outdoes everything and everyone. He is the young Clint Eastwood, any one of the implacable James Bonds, the sardonic Bruce “Diehard” Willis and the once adorable Mel “Lethal Weapon” Gibson, plus the ghost of John Wayne. Foxx has these all rolled into one. Wait for the moment when poor abusive fools are untying Foxx’s hands and he kills them with his bonds still on! As for the overuse of the N word, I think the average slaveholder before and after the Civil War was too obsessed with gentrified social climbing and pseudo-aristocratic money concerns to have used quite so much vulgarity. (There are no Ashley Wilkes or Rhett Butlers in “Django.”) But the horrible N word echoes Tarantino’s overuse and overkill of violence,
as if they were/are one and the same. Maybe they are. This movie is stunning as it is meant to be. But thinking realistically, I read only this week that after the Emancipation Proclamation set slaves free, there was absolutely no social underpinning to transition them to life as free people. Millions succumbed to death, disease and starvation. So the end of the movie with Jamie Foxx and his liberated lady “Broomhilda,” played by Kerry Washington, still in Mississippi even before the Emancipation Proclamation, with hundreds of murders to their credit, might not have had it so easy riding to the north toward safety. But I guess we can’t count out our hero, Mr. Foxx, super cowboy, with a horse to outdo Ann Romney’s own two-stepping thoroughbreds. I am told the real-life actor Foxx has fine horses like the ones he rides in the movie. He ranches somewhere in Texas. Maybe Quentin Tarantino will write a sequel where former slaves Foxx and Washington travel north and his six guns keep them in good health. This would match the positive showoff ending. No matter the serious, horrifying reality of slavery still going on all over the world, “Django Unchained” is a western shoot-’em-up classic of willful hilarity.

Confessions Of A Traffic Cop “It was a small-scale community, with slow speeds, and we would investigate accidents on- and off-post, in Colorado, New Mexico, and as far as Corpus Christi, anywhere a serviceman was injured or killed,” Brucks says. After six years in the Army he joined the El Paso Police Department as a traffic cop. He retired last May after 22 years and almost 40,000 tickets, by his estimation, most of which he issued while riding Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson big-motor touring bikes. Here are some of his stories from the road and tips for motorists looking to avoid a ticket. Besides speeding, which is the reason for most tickets, what’s most likely to get a traffic cop’s attention? Seatbelts, cell phones, red lights, and stop signs. I concentrate on all the things that can cause an accident. There are some cops who write tickets for expired plates, for having no insurance or registration, but you’re not going to crash because of any of that. I focused on safety issues—that’s what I like to do. Motorcycle or car—which is better for catching speeders? Motorcycles accelerate so much faster and can maneuver around traffic better. When I’m in a car, it’s harder to get it turned around. I grew up riding dirt bikes as a kid. I’ve always been riding. I teach riding with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation; I have a BMW RT1150 as a personal bike. Do traffic cops think it’s cheating to hide behind billboards? No. You’ve got a radar detector; you know where we hide. If you are thinking we are hiding somewhere, it’s because you’re speeding. Do you have favorite hiding places? I stay on the freeway mostly. That’s where there are more speeders. I’ll park under overpasses, on bridges. I need to be able to start the bike and accelerate to go after someone. If there are a lot of exits, I can miss [a speeder] who can maybe get off at an exit, and then it’s too late to catch him. How much leeway do you give someone before writing them a speeding ticket? The speed limit in Texas used to be 60 mph, [and] well, out on the clear road where there’s a lot of visibility I give people leeway. I wouldn’t write tickets until they got to 80 mph. I’ve never worked an area where the speed limit drops a lot without warning, what I call a trap. If there’s a new speed limit that’s lower, it [takes] time for people to get used to it and I don’t write tickets there. What can a driver say to get out of a ticket? When someone tells me that a family member has just been sent to the hospital and they’re on their way, how can I ticket them for that? I tell them that they’re not being safe, that they need to slow down and stay safe. That’s about it. I think now it’s much more of a rat-race world than it was 30 years ago. The workforce has generated that. People have to be at work on time or risk getting fired, kids have to be picked up and taken places—it’s just citizens in a hurry. Ninety-eight percent of the people I stop are law-abiding good citizens,
and they say they have no reason to speed. That’s an easy ticket. They’re not happy, but I could go months without any problems, without anyone cussing me out. I wrote a lot of warnings, too, but it all depends on the situation, if they were being safe. What different kinds of speeders do you find? Monday through Friday, they’re all trying to get to work; they go 70 to 75 mph in a 60 mph zone. On Saturdays and Sundays, there is less traffic, no rush hour, and they go 85 to 90 mph. On the [Woodrow Bean] Transmountain Road, there is a “100 Miles per Hour” club, and a lot of motorcyclists run it on the weekends. When I first started, I worked night shifts, and there are a lot of bad people out there at night. So I liked days, and I would try to work as early as possible before it got hot, because I was on a motorcycle. What’s the toughest ticket you’ve had to write? I clocked a woman coming down from New Mexico on Highway 54 at 111 mph. She had just been stopped for going 90 mph 15 minutes [earlier] in New Mexico. Everybody has a reason, and I want to know it. I always ask why someone was speeding, and that’s just
I clocked a guy on a crotch-rocket bike doing 189 mph. Just let him go. Since police departments began to get sued for chasing speeders, around 1995, there’s a fine line. You have to determine if you can catch him, if chasing him will cause an accident for him, for you, for the public. There’s no way to catch anyone like that. to open things up. I want to know what they’re thinking, if they need my help for something. She had been crying, and the tears didn’t just start—they’d been going on a long time, you can tell. She was on her way to a motel in El Paso to catch her husband who was shacked up with another woman there, cheating. How do you write a ticket for that? Who’s the craziest speeder you’ve seen? I stopped a guy going 136 mph. I caught him mostly because he thought he lost me. I came up beside him and blocked his front wheel on the curb. The hardest part after that was now I have to be courteous and respectful, although he could have killed someone, and that makes me angry. It’s really too bad, he was a good kid, never been in trouble, but now he had to go to jail for felonious evading, and that’s really going to wreck his life. When do you not chase a speeder? I clocked a guy on a crotch-rocket bike doing 189 mph. Just let him go. Since police departments began to get sued for chasing speeders, around 1995, there’s a fine line. You have to determine if you can catch him, if chasing him will cause an accident for him, for you, for the public. There’s no way to catch anyone like that.

California / Nevada Roundup www.Travels-with-Hian.com Happy to report this monthly column will now include festivals, events and places to visit in Nevada. Hope you enjoy the expanded coverage from California, the Golden State and Nevada, the Silver State.
California
East County San Diego – There’s a lot going on at Viejas Casino. On a recent visit I started the day by sitting in on an Omaha tournament. I managed to finish third. The poker room is well run with a friendly and helpful staff. Additionally, they serve complimentary soft drinks and coffee and feature highly discounted meals. For gaming fans there are lots of slots, table games and off-track betting. After the tournament, I had a great lunch at The Grove Steakhouse (don’t miss the crab bisque). It’s a rusticclubby feeling and its menu features aged prime meat and fresh seafood. Note: there are five additional restaurants at Viejas. I wandered over to the outlet shops and got a super deal on a fleece jacket. If you are an ice-skater, you will enjoy the largest skating rink in Southern California at Viejas. There’s also a bowling alley. Viejas’ new hotel is well underway and its grand opening is scheduled for this spring. Look at the website, www.viejas.com, for the neverending array of promotions, including specials for the military. While online or in person, join their free V Club to earn points towards discounts and benefits. San Diego – Restaurant Week is back, January 8 – 13. Over 180 restaurants offer set menus for lunch and dinner. This year, I’m heading to The Shores Restaurant ($15 for lunch), Deborah Scott’s newest
hot spot, Vintana, for lunch ($20), 100 Wines for dinner ($30) and Nine-Ten for dinner ($40). The list of participants, prices and menus can be found at www. sandiegorestaurantweek. com.
Nevada
Las Vegas – My latest visit was for a travel writers’ conference at the newly remodeled Plaza Hotel. They have spent millions upgrading and it shows; great style, updated amenities and comfortable rooms. Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman’s restaurant, Oscar’s, is located inside the hotel and it’s a perfect spot for cocktails and steaks. The tagline is Beef, Booze and Broads. The Plaza anchors the Fremont Experience which features pedestrian walkways, glitzy vintage neon signs, restaurants, bars, and lots of entertainment choices (there’s even a zip-line). Another favorite of mine is El Cortez’ Cabana Suites; it’s cool, eclectic and quiet. Two other pluses at the El Cortez are its low-limit poker room and the excellent ½ pound burger and beer for $5 in the Cortez Café. Also downtown is the fabulous Mob Museum, located in the historic U.S. Post Office and Federal Courthouse; a mustsee attraction. There are three floors featuring fascinating law enforcement and mob history with high-tech theater presentations, iconic one-of-a-kind artifacts and interactive exhibits; plan on spending at least three hours. For further information about the area, logon to www.plazahotelcasino.com, www. elcortezhotelcasino.com, and www.themobmuseum. org.
