New Naval Hospital on cutting edge of technology for next 50 years

CAMP PENDLETON — Marine and Navy leaders broke ground on the 70acre construction site for the new Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital in Deciember. The four-level, 500,000-square-foot hospital will be located near the main gate and will have an expected staff of more than 1,100. “The new Naval Hospital is keeping on the cutting edge of technology for at least 50 years to come,” said Col. Nicholas F. Marano, commanding officer, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The guest speaker at the groundbreaking event was Vice Adm.
Adam. M. Robinson Jr., surgeon general of the Navy and Chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. “Navy medicine is Marine medicine,” said Robinson. “Wherever Marines go, there will be Navy.” Robinson explained to the guests how the new hospital would be centered more on patient care. “Focusing on our warriors that come to our hospitals is the fundamental strength by which Navy medicine is conducted,” said Robinson. The hospital is scheduled to be completed January 2014, and will be ready for use later that year.

The Southern California heat poured down on the football players of 1st Marine Logistics Group’s “Beasts” and Marine Wing Support Squadron 374’s “Rhinos” as the two teams competed for the “Best of the West” title at the 11 Area field, Dec. 11. Camp Pendleton’s 1st MLG’s Beasts and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms’ MWSS-374’s “Rhinos” went head to head during the annual competition. Both teams played strong defense, keeping the score 0 to 0 the entire first half of the game. Eventually, the Beasts’ Jarvis Foster scored the first touchdown that led to their victory of 14 to 12. “They were playing a really physical game,” said Jarris Mayfield, strong side linebacker, Beasts. “We put up a good fight; by making it hard for them to find gaps in our defense.” The Beasts team members have been training extra hard for the past two weeks in order to play their best for this championship game, said Mayfield, who is also one of the team captains. “This win means a lot, not just to us but to the base,” said Coach Marvin Hill, Beasts. “Twenty-nine Palms have been winning against us since 2006. Even
though we lost the last three years, we finally came together as a team.” Many base residents and staff attended the much anticipated game to cheer on the declared best team on Camp Pendleton, and now of the West. “It’s great to see the Beasts come out and win this game,” said Tom Fisher, athletic director, Semper Fit, Marine Corps Community Services. “The teams take this league seriously, and it shows when they play.” The Best of the West concludes the football season for the Marine football athletes of 29 Palms and Camp Pendleton. There is a story on page 4, titled: Improperly handled human remains under investigation at nation’s famous cemetery. It was a good article and I was interested in it, but the complete story is not there. The story ends with a sentence that states: Both urns were There is no continued on page such and such or anything (at least I couldn’t find it). Ref. vol. 35. issue 24, Dec.15,2010. On page 35 is a poster of North American F-82 Twin Mustangs and the middle plane shows the symbol on the tail for the 68th Figther Squadron. I arrived at Itazuki AB in November 1953 just before we change to Jet Aircraft. I would like to know where you found that poster and I would love to have one for my own collection. The F-82 is part of the lost history from the Korean war.

Forgotten Mavericks, Spurs Are Rising By Vito Curcuru The NBA’s Eastern Conference has been the dominant conference in terms of attention this season. The East has the LeBron-ified Heat loudly and finally establishing a record worthy of its three superstars. The Celtics have grabbed headlines as they have beaten the Heat and just about everyone else this year. The Orlando Magic are talked about because with Dwight Howard they are not only a constant threat to win it all, they are the team many are waiting for to establish a rivalry with the Heat. Orlando’s recent overhaul is also garnering the headlines. The Knicks are riding a hot streak and being hailed as the prodigal franchise that will bring the NBA back to American consciousness. The East also has the Bulls, who are lurking with a lot of talent and have what looks to be a possible long playoff run in them. The headlines in the Western Conference are the Lakers, who are worthy of attention as Kobe Bryant pursues his sixth championship, and Kevin Durant’s Oklahoma City Thunder.

Durant has established himself as one of the best players in the game and last year’s Thunder vs. Lakers series was one to remember. But two teams flying under the radar are the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks. The NBA season is past the quarter mark and the Mavericks and Spurs are winning without dominating the headlines. How have they quietly put together their big seasons and will they be able to sustain their high level of play through June? And when will ESPN and others start to pay more attention and give the Spurs and Mavericks their due? Both Dallas and San Antonio are dominating in terms of their records. The way they are playing and how they are winning games indicates that both teams could make long runs in the playoffs. Each team has veteran leadership and intangibles that could mean a ring in June.
DALLAS MAVERICKS
Dirk Nowitzki is having sensational NBA season. He was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for Dec. 6-12. It was the second time in three weeks he won the award. Nowitzki led the Mavericks to a 3-0 record during this time, with wins over Golden State, New Jersey, and Utah. Nowitzki averaged 25.7 points and 9 rebounds per game and shot .700 from the field (18-22 FGs), .667 from three-point range (6-9 3FGs), and .789 from the free throw line (15-19 FTs). Nowitzki received his first Player of the Week for Nov. 22-28. During this time, he led the Mavericks to four wins in five nights. Dallas has been scoring early and often during the season. With the 103-98 victory over Portland on Dec. 15, Dallas moved to 13-0 on the year when they scored 100+ points in a game. In those 13 wins, Dallas shot .492 from the floor, .360 from threepoint range, and .811 from the line. The Mavericks’ offense has not been the only story, however. Often a team that scores a lot gives up a lot of points, but during their 14 100+ games, Dallas held opponents to an average of 94.9 points and .440 shooting. Dallas is proving a team that scores a lot can still play defense. Dallas has plenty of solid veterans. The Mavericks have three players who rank in the top 10 of active NBA players with the most double-doubles in their careers. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Jason Kidd’s 478 career double-doubles rank fourth among active players, followed by Marion’s 382 career double-doubles (fifth). Nowitzki’s 350 double-doubles rank ninth on the current list. Dallas is poised to make a run at a title with its veterans and deep bench.
SAN ANTONIO The Spurs have a long history of domination in the Western Conference. The team’s success begins and ends with Tim Duncan. Tim Duncan is in his 14th season with the Spurs and with him, they have compiled the best record in the NBA at 740318 and a winning percentage of .699. This
is the best mark of any team in professional sports during this time period. With Duncan, they have won four championships and six division titles. This year, Duncan is averaging 13 points a game, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks in 29 minutes. He has eight double-doubles and ranks 13th in the NBA in rebounds and eighth in blocks per game. Manu Ginobli is having the kind of season that is garnering him early MVP mention. He is averaging 20 points, almost 4 rebounds, nearly 5 assists, and almost 2 steals a game in 32 minutes. He is shooting .467 from the field and .374 for the three-point line and .887 from the charity stripe. Ginobili has scored in double figures in 24 of 25 games, while averaging 5 points higher than his career scoring average. He has tallied 13 20-plus point performances in 25 games this season. The Spurs are anchored by their coach, Gregg Popovich. He has fourth best winning percentage in NBA history at .675. He ranks seventh in playoffs winning percentage (.606) and is only behind Phil Jackson among active coaches. Dallas isn’t the only team in Texas with a potent offense. As a team, the Spurs rank first in three-point field goal percentage (.414), third in assists per game (23.7), fifth in points per game (105.8), seventh in field goal percentage (.471), and seventh in free throw percentage (.788). If the Spurs were to continue shooting .414 from the three-point line, it would rank as the second-best in NBA history. From 12/5 through 12/12 this year, the Spurs won four consecutive games by at least 15 points. It tied a team record for consecutive 15-point victories, which had been done three times before.
THE BOTTOM LINE Each team seems poised to make a run to the finals and both have solid coaches, but the Spurs clearly have a Texas-sized advantage in Gregg Popovich. Rick Carlisle is capable of taking a team to the 50-win plateau, but the real test will come in the playoffs. Carlisle’s overall winning percentage is .593 and he is .654 since taking over in Dallas in 2008-09. His regular season record is excellent and he has taken teams to conference finals, but has yet to make it to the NBA Finals. Greg Popovich has proven he can take a team to the finals and win championships. This could be the year Mavericks or Spurs take the Western Conference title from the Lakers. As the Spurs and Mavericks continue to win, the real question is will anybody outside of Texas notice? Is the sporting world watching a repeat of the baseball season when the Rangers found themselves in the World Series and only a handful of people predicted their appearance? The Lakers resemble the Yankees as the favorites, the Thunder look like the redhot Rays, and the Utah Jazz look like the reliable and perennial playoff team that is the Minnesota Twins. In the end, the Rangers found themselves the center of the baseball world with the San Francisco Giants and come June, the Mavericks or the Spurs could force the sporting world to book plane tickets back to Texas.

Following Week 15, three teams have clinched playoff berths: Matt Ryan’s Atlanta Falcons, Tom Brady’s New England Patriots and Ben Roethlisberger’s Pittsburgh Steelers. The Falcons have dominated the NFC, while the Patriots clinched after a surprisingly tough battle against the Aaron Rodgers-less, Matt Flynn-led, Green Bay Packers. The Steelers snuck in by strength of schedule despite a loss to fellow Super Bowl contenders New York Jets. The playoff picture was murky heading into Week 15. For the most part, nothing changed. Division and playoff races are still very much alive heading into the final two weeks of the playoffs.

Cathy Rankin An American Pinup Tribute The story behind the calendar... What are the chances that one girl’s picture would end up in both Afghanistan and Iraq, on two separate occasions three years apart? The answer is, it actually happened... to me. This is my personal story of how I got involved with our troops, and why I was inspired to produce this calendar to help support them. I’ve always considered myself patriotic. I was raised to believe it is our duty to support our country, regardless of whatever political ideas we might have about war or government politics. But it wasn’t until 2005 that I began to understand just how important the word “patriotic” is and what it really means. You see, during this time, when the United States was in the heat of battle in Afghanistan and Iraq, my agent booked me for a photo shoot with Dillon Precision Products, Inc./Dillon Aero. This company often featured me on the cover of their calendars and monthly publication, “The Blue Press,” which goes to over 250,000 people worldwide, many whom are military personnel or families. One of my covers became so popular that Dillon decided to produce it as a poster, and it sold out immediately. This is what started everything. For some reason, it struck a chord with Inspired by the original Betty Grable poster, 1944 our service personnel overseas. It ended up in the hands of some troops in Afghanistan, where this wonderful group of brave men flew a flag in my honor at the base and put my poster on their military vehicle and in their office. They designated me an honorary member of their sector, signed the flag and mailed it to me. It was at that moment I knew my heart belonged to these heroes. I started receiving emails and letters from many of our military personnel and their families, thanking me for keeping them inspired and encouraged. This surprised and humbled me because I’m not convinced I did anything noteworthy. My poster seems so insignificant to what these soldiers do every day. I was flattered and felt a great sense of loyalty, pride and duty to these brave men and women. I know that what I do is meaningless and petty compared to what they sacrifice, risk, and deal with, all in the name of our great Country. So, when I was contacted in 2006 by a retired Marine who asked me to work with his charity, New England Warrior, to help raise money for much needed supplies for the troops, I immediately agreed, and a wonderful partnership was born. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more incredible, I received another email in late 2008. Apparently, that June, there was an insurgent attack in Iraq. The terrorists involved blew up a building, causing American casualties. As you can see from the pictures, the building was completely destroyed, burned out and full of rubble. You can even see the fire still burning inside the door. But inside, on a burned and blackened wall, was one item that somehow remained intact — a 2008 Dillon Calendar just hanging there in plain sight, singed corners and all. Most of the pages had melted away, but clear as day, the month of October, which happened to feature my photo, Inspired by the original Marilyn Monroe was still there, photo, 1954 and completely recognizable. Someone at the scene, I have no idea who, took pictures of the incident and sent them to Dillon because it was such a chilling sight. I don’t know who hung the calendar there in the first place, but once again, here were these brave heroes, fighting in the most horrible situations, and this simple Page 10 January 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS
for showing her arms, legs or face, that a red-blooded, all-American picture of a girl in a mini-dress is hanging in one of their buildings — there is something somewhat satisfying about that)! So, the purpose of this calendar is to pay tribute to all the branches of our Armed Forces. I wanted it to be a symbol of gratitude, pride, courage and honor for our military, and all patriotic Americans. When the concept of war-time pin-ups was at its height of popularity during World War II, Americans had such a great sense of togetherness and pride in their country above anything else. It was a simpler time. We now live in a different world, and some

I can’t begin to understand how and why this comforts them, but somehow it does, and I am so honored to think I contribute to that in any small way. I began to realize my insignificant little pictures
of those ideals have suffered. My ultimate goal with this calendar is to recapture that feeling, to remind people of that tradition, and to just brighten the battlefield a little for those who long for home. I also donate the calendar profits to New England Warrior for the wonderful work they are doing. Inspired by the original Jayne Mansfield photo, 1957 were becoming something much more meaningful than I ever imagined. No matter where you stand politically, or what you agree or disagree with regarding war, we are still Americans, ABOVE ALL, and our troops fighting overseas deserve our gratitude. They see things we don’t. They tell the real stories, not the ones we get from our mainstream media. I have been very enlightened by things I’ve learned from the men and women I’ve come to know. They know what they are fighting for and they believe in it and sacrifice for it without hesitation. When you vote in an election, debate issues with a friend, or even when you get frustrated and criticize or blame the government or a particular politician, remember, there’s a reason why we are able to enjoy that freedom. Impossible to Please A group of girlfriends is on vacation when they see a five-story hotel with a sign that reads: “For Women Only.” Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in. The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. “We have five floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It’s easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what’s inside.” So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: “All the men on this floor are short and plain.” The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor.
The sign on the second floor reads: “All the men here are short and handsome.” Still, this isn’t good enough, so the friends continue on up. They reach the third floor and the sign reads: “All the men here are tall and plain.” They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up. On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: “All the men here are tall and handsome.” The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor. There they find a sign that reads: “There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman.”
Redneck Logic Two rednecks decided that they weren’t going anywhere in life and thought they should go to college to get ahead. The first went in to see the counselor, who told him to take math, history, and logic. “What’s logic?” the first redneck asked. The professor answered, “Let me give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?” “I sure do.”
“Then I can assume, using logic, that you have a yard,” replied the professor. “That’s real good!” said the redneck. The professor continued, “Logic will also tell me that since you have a yard, you also own a house.” Impressed, the redneck said, “Amazing!” “And since you own a house, logic dictates that you have a wife.” “That’s Betty Mae! This is incredible!” The redneck was catching on. “Finally, since you have a wife, logically I can assume that you are heterosexual,” said the professor. “You’re absolutely right! Why that’s the most fascinatin’ thing I ever heard! I cain’t wait to take that logic class!” The redneck, proud of the new world opening up to him, walked back into the hallway where his friend was still waiting. “So what classes are ya takin’?” asked the friend. “Math, history, and logic!” replied the first redneck. “What in tarnation is logic?” asked his friend. “Let me give you an example. Generous lawyer A local United Way office realized that the organization had never received a donation from the town’s most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute. “Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn’t you like to give back to the community in some way?” The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, “First, did your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?” Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbled, “Um ... no.” The lawyer interrupts, “Or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?” The stricken United Way rep began to stammer out an apology, but was interrupted again. “Or that my sister’s husband died in a traffic accident,” the lawyer’s voice rising in indignation, “leaving her penniless with three children?!” The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, said simply, “I had no idea...” On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again, “So if I don’t give any money to them, why should I give any to you?”

Michael Vick: Has he repented enough to be called a hero again? Michael Vick is getting a ton of praise from the most important man in football. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that he is proud of the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback for turning his life around. Of course we all remember that Vick served 18 months in prison for his role in a dog fighting ring, costing him not only his freedom, but his record contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Now, it seems that Vick has gotten back on the right path since being released. He seems to have made amends for what he’s done and gained back much of the respect he had lost prior to his prison term. But is that adequate? Has Vick repented enough to be called a hero again? Yes! Yes! Yes! According to the fans in Philadelphia he is seen as the savior of their beloved team. And he may well be. This season he set an NFL record with 300+ yds passing, 50+ yds rushing and six TDs in a single game. Currently he is the leading vote getter for the Pro-Bowl.

Al Sharpton: Societal parasite As covered in the press recently, civil-rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton planned to consult with officials at the Federal Communications Commission to discuss methods by which radio talk-show host and conservative icon Rush Limbaugh and others like him might be removed from the airwaves. That this societal parasite who has contributed nothing but racial divisiveness to our society would be granted audience by an FCC mailroom clerk is an obscenity in itself; the idea that he might gain a scintilla of ground in his totalitarian quest is nothing less than horrific. It is a sad joke that Sharpton has gleaned any credibility whatsoever among those who wish to be taken seriously. It is also testimony to the role of the establishment press in promoting liberal orthodoxy, since it is the press who essentially anointed him as a spokesperson for black Americans. The media dynamic in play here, as well as most of Sharpton’s more public sins, are detailed in my recent book “Negrophilia: From Slave Block to Pedestal - America’s Racial Obsession.” For years, the political left and career black activists have doggedly driven the cant that Limbaugh is racist; he was one of the first prominent media commentators to enjoy the appellation, since he was the first and most successful in the new generation of talkradio celebrities. Inasmuch as the left and aforementioned activists perceive a threat in the mere existence of such individuals, they must somehow qualify as racists, and thus Limbaugh is the worst of the lot. Erik Rush’s new book is bold, daring and needed: “Negrophilia: From Slave Block to Pedestal - America’s Racial Obsession” The fact that Limbaugh hasn’t evidenced a bigoted bone in his body counts for nothing – less than nothing really; there isn’t anything he’s said over the course of his entire on-air career that has even approached the level of actor Michael Richards’ 2006 comments, or those of TV bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman in 2007. Both men were recorded on video and audio, respectively, using the word “nigger” – and not in an acceptable context. We’ve been treated to Al’s tedious, overweening self-promotion for nearly 30 years now. Like a flesh-eating movie zombie, he arises again and again to feast – and, like in
the zombie films, always predictably. Only this time, he seeks to devour our liberty. Given Sharpton’s gutter roots, his diatribe remains at cretinous levels, but this is what passes for legitimate discourse these days. If someone derides entitlements, government dependency or the concept of reparations for blacks as amoral government money grabs, Sharpton calls it racism. Limbaugh is routinely accused of employing racist oratory (by Sharpton and others) when he hasn’t even addressed the subject of race. “So we’re not telling Rush don’t say what he wants to say. Say it at home. Don’t get on publicly regulated radio and television that are selectively given licenses and do that to offend people because of their race or their gender.” – Al Sharpton A better instance of the pot calling the kettle black I’ve never heard. Pun intended. In the wake of public outrage over political agendas being advanced by public broadcasting entities (which were inflamed over the firing of a black man, I might add), Sharpton is not even savvy enough to make the distinction between public access and market forces. Nobody compels anyone to watch Limbaugh, or Black Entertainment Television for that matter, whose agenda most certainly includes advancing far-left racial dogma, which is racism, res ipsa loquitur. So will Sharpton, like so many blacks of questionable character (including our president), be given latitude in his loathsome efforts simply because he is black? Well, that largely depends on the outlook of the Obama appointees running the FCC. Given this administration’s proclivity for circumventing the legislative process via the executive branch and cooperation with activists, the outcome is anyone’s guess. “We are never gonna get over it, and we are never gonna let you forget it!” – Al Sharpton That quote demonstrates what all this is really about: keeping the lie alive – whether the lie is that Limbaugh is a racist or that America is an institutionally racist nation. That and, as always, keeping the Rev. in the public eye and the green stuff. There’s little doubt that Sharpton finds Limbaugh offensive, but I doubt he cares one way or another whether Rush stays on the air or not. Indeed, having such a target presents infinite opportunities for Sharpton, the quintessential opportunist. He has learned – if only via the Pavlovian modality – that while one ought not be able to say “anything you want” (his words), his own brand of racist invective is socially acceptable, while the type of which he is accusing Rush Limbaugh – however slanderously – is not. Representative Ann Kirkpatrick: The Arizona Democrat introduced the Taking Responsibility for Congressional Pay Act which called for a 5 percent pay cut for members of Congress, the first cut since 1933. 7. A NEW YEAR TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO OTHERS Today, I hear people often say they feel like the world is in such a state of confusion. I hear them say that it seems harder and harder to discern right from wrong. During this special holiday time and beginning of a new year (2011, Wow!), just might be a good time to reflect on this dilemma. We may want to listen to the counsel given centuries ago by the one whose birth we are celebrating. “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burdens light.” (Matt 11: 28-30) Poet Henry Van Dyke said it this way. “Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world—stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger than death, and that the blessed life which began in Bethlehem years ago is the image and brightness of Eternal Love? Then you can keep Christmas. And if you keep it for a day, why not always? But you can never keep it alone.” During this time of year in which we reflect on the things we are thankful for and the season of giving that just past, now with the start of a New Year, it would be also a great time for us to think about how we want to impact the lives of those important to us or in our part of the world. The fact is we all affect those around us more than we may realize. I want to share what I mean by an exercise used in weekend retreats I provide, which is called the “Banana Activity.” The banana is representative of us, i.e., the thick skin, which protects the soft parts inside from serious injury and which makes it difficult to see what is inside beneath this protective layer. The concept of self-image is introduced, (how one sees him/herself), how it is formed, (by experiences, comments made to you or about you, your own accomplishments or perceived failures, etc.), and that often we are not aware of or accept that an event has influenced how we have come to see ourselves. Then others share experiences and give the banana a little squeeze to simulate the impact that experience has had on their
others, to experience the joy of seeing the light of hope come into the eyes and faces of others is one of the greatest gifts they or we could realize. Christmas and this time of year reassure us that our spirits can be rejuvenated through faith, hope and charity. “When it comes to giving, some people stop at nothing.” In a book I was reading recently, I came across this quote from Mother Teresa that expresses this concept. “There is light in this world… a healing spirit much stronger than any darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force…where there is suffering, too much pain. And suddenly the spirit will emerge . . . through lives of ordinary people, and answer in extraordinary ways. God speaks in the silence of the heart and we listen.”

You may never really know, but perhaps something we consider unremarkable—like lending a helping hand to someone, a kind word or other simple considerate act of kindness and charity, may make an ordinary day extraordinary for someone else. Look for simple opportunities to do so, maybe even beyond just this holiday and New Year season. To reference the beginning of this article, today we do live in a world of confusion and stress. Standards of morality and character have been lowered all too often. In general it appears that society almost accepts any kind of behavior as normal. The attitude seems to be “live and let live.” We are therefore often confused and unsure of which path leads to real happiness, inner peace and true contentment. Let the message of this season help us focus on what is truly most important. Let us make right choices for right reasons and touch others positively in the process. In closing, when Daniel Webster was asked what was the greatest thought that had ever entered his mind, he replied saying, “My accountability to Almighty God.” Let that accountability be for the extraordinary ways we let our spirit shine, is my hope for you this time of year and the year ahead. National Veterans Cemetery At Miramar Opens San Diego’s National Veterans Cemetery at Miramar accepted the cremated remains of four veterans and the spouse of a veteran for the first time. “We have been waiting for Miramar to open for three years,” said Margrit Yacapin, the wife of Army veteran Lomi Yacapin, whose cremated remains were laid to rest with full military honors. “He just wanted to be part of a new tradition and wanted to be buried in the ground to have a soldier’s grave.” Full casket burials at Miramar are not expected to take place until February as different phases of the 313acre facility are completed. Each phase will accommodate 12,000 full casket burials. “We were originally looking to open this in 2005, but we ran into some environmental issues and after that some contracting issues,” said Kirk Leopard, the director for Miramar and Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. The work to get Miramar open began in 1999 when it became apparent Fort Rosecrans was running out of room. For the Yacapin family, the cemetery was the only place their former Army Airborne soldier wanted to be buried, especially with the takeoff of jets from nearby MCAS Miramar. “Daily flyovers... that’s what we were hoping for,” said Magrit Yacapin. “I’m sure that was in the back of his mind so he’d be thrilled.”

I’m 63. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a six-month period when I was between jobs but job-hunting every day, I’ve worked hard since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven’t called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn’t inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there’s no retirement in sight, and I’m tired. Very tired. I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.

Those are the citizens we need. I’m tired of latte liberals and journalists, who would never wear the uniform of the Republic themselves, or let their entitlement-handicapped kids near a recruiting station, trashing our military. They and their kids can sit at home, never having to make splitsecond decisions under life and death circumstances, and bad mouth better people than themselves. Do bad things happen in war? You bet. Do our troops sometimes misbehave? Sure. Does this compare with the atrocities that were the policy of our enemies for the last fifty years and still are? Not even close. So here’s the deal. I’ll let myself be subjected to all the humiliation and abuse that was heaped on terrorists at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo, and the critics can let themselves be subject to captivity by the Muslims, who tortured and beheaded Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, or the Muslims who tortured and murdered Marine Lt. Col. William Higgins in Lebanon, or the Muslims who ran the blood-spattered Al Qaeda torture rooms our troops found in Iraq, or the Muslims who cut off the heads of schoolgirls in Indonesia, because the girls were Christian. Then we’ll compare notes. British and American soldiers are the only troops in history that civilians came to for help and handouts, instead of hiding from in fear.

I’m tired of people telling me that their party has a corner on virtue and the other party has a corner on corruption. Read the papers; bums are bipartisan. And I’m tired of people telling me we need bipartisanship. I live in Illinois, where the “Illinois Combine” of Democrats has worked to loot the public for years. Not to mention the tax cheats in Obama’s cabinet. I’m tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I’m tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor. Speaking of poor, I’m tired of hearing people with air-conditioned homes, color TVs and two cars called poor. The majority of Americans didn’t have that in 1970, but we didn’t know we were “poor.” The poverty pimps have to keep changing the definition of poor to keep the dollars flowing. I’m real tired of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives and actions. I’m tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or bigwhatever for their problems. — The 2011 gastronomy season kicks off on January 16. and lasts through the 21. It is the seventh annual San Diego Restaurant Week and is one of my favorite hometown events. This year, over 180 restaurants and their chefs will show off three course, fixed price menus in the $20, $30 and $40 categories. Originally launched to spotlight San Diego as a dining destination, it has grown into a twice a year occurrence for food lovers. It’s a great way to sample signature dishes at bargain prices, try new places or revisit old favorites. Last September’s Restaurant Week introduced me to three spots. The Kensington Grill was a real find in the $30 category.
Its pleasant design is the first thing you notice upon entering. The menu for the evening was eclectic and we had a tough time deciding what to order. My wife and I shared two appetizers: charred asparagus and poached egg with pancetta vinaigrette, and the chopped fresh vegetables with champagne dressing. Both were outstanding and a hint of what was to come. Our entrées were the grilled pork chop and the blackened ahi. Each plate featured interesting side dishes including quinoa, Yukon medallions and butternut squash farro. After much thought, we selected our desserts, key lime crème brulee and the house specialty, banana bread pudding. The service was first rate and the food and the presentation excellent. There are daily food
specials, as well as drink promotions, corkage waivers and a happy hour. The Kensington Grill is classy yet comfortable. They also operate the Cucina Urbana and Urban Kitchen Catering. was also in the $30 grouping. It features a huge menu ranging from Asian to Italian to comfort food; there is something for all tastes. For starters we split two dishes, the crispy duck tostada and the smoked salmon walnut salad. Both were perfectly dressed and tasty. Our main courses consisted of a 16 oz. rib-eye steak and garlic wok baked jumbo prawns. A slab of chocolate cake and a big slice of cheesecake completed the meal. The Whisknladle, a La Jolla bistro, was on the $40 list. For my starter, I chose the cutting board which included a variety of cured meats and cheeses, freshly made mustards, spreads and pickled veggies. My wife ordered the mussels and fries. They were so good that she didn’t want to share. Need I say more? For the second course she chose the Alaskan halibut. My pick was their signature dish, the Niman Ranch burger with cheese, bacon, and caramelized onions topped with a fried egg. My turn not to share (turnabout is fair play). All of the dessert choices were irresistible, but we finally ordered the chocolate malted crunch bar and artisan cheese plate. Nice touches included their freshly baked bread and flavored butter. They have a year-round patio as well as indoor dining. As one would expect, the presentation has a sophisticated flair and the staff is well trained and welcoming. Palm Springs
A current series of special lectures, films and flight exhibitions at the Palm Springs Air Museum commemorate the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. Veterans are honored each Saturday and are often featured speakers. The 75,000-square-foot site is home to more than 28 flyable vintage aircraft. The Buddy Rodgers Theater features documentaries about military aviation, with an emphasis on World War II. In addition to planes and historical artifacts, there is an 8500 volume library that focuses on American military history highlighting flying. The exhibit ends February 26, 2011. WW II, Korean War Vet: FRCSW Artisan Driven by Dedication, Excellence in Trade By Leandro Hernandez
NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND, CA – “I live the job. To me, it’s more like a hobby. I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do. Being in the aircraft environment, that’s what it’s all about,” said Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) aircraft sheet metal mechanic Robie Meeks. As a soldier during World War II and the Korean War, to his civil service position supporting the global war on terror today, Meeks has worked on America’s military aircraft for more than 65 years. Born in Villa Ridge, Ill., in 1925, Meeks said that he always wanted to fly. “At that day and age, there weren’t that many people flying,” he noted. At age 18, Meeks joined the federal civil service as a machinist apprentice in Rock Island, Ill. Later that year, he was drafted into the Army Air Forces, and completed basic training in St. Louis, Mo. At the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, he applied to the Tuskegee Airmen. Comprised of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group,

On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began. Meeks was stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside, Calif., working as a machinist. “It [the Korean War] was hard to understand because it hit like a surprise. Meeks passed the written and physical tests; however, on his way to training in Biloxi, Miss., he was diagnosed with a chronic sinus condition which caused doctors to deem him unfit to fly. “I was disappointed. At that age, everyone wanted to fly. The doctors tried to clear up my condition but they couldn’t,” he said. He would later outgrow the condition. Meeks continued his career as a machinist in the Army Air Forces, working on many different aircraft through World War II including the B-58 Hustler, the first supersonic bomber, the B-52 strato fortress bomber, and the F-14 Tomcat fighter. “The Tomcat and Hustler were challenging because they had so many new things. And being in the machine shop, I was always in the middle of it,” Meeks said. In 1945, he was stationed at the 56th Air Depot Group in the Marina Islands, Guam, until World War II eanded that year. Honorably discharged in 1946, he reenlisted in the Air Forces in 1947. In 1948, Meeks was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, as a supervisor and taught precision grinding to apprentices. On July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, mandating the equality of treatment and opportunity in the Armed Services. JANE FONDA
Jane Fonda toured North Vietnam in 1972, during which she cozied up to the enemy, posing for photo ops with communist troops and broadcasting anti-American propaganda over Radio Hanoi. (See Fonda’s “Radio Hanoi” broadcast at http:// patriotpost.us/reference/hanoi-jane-radio/ Fonda also participated in a staged press conference with American servicemen held captive by the Viet Cong, the purpose of which was to “prove” that the POWs were not being mistreated by their captors. Years later when the released POWs described the very real torture and degradation they suffered at the hands of the North Vietnamese, Fonda called them “hypocrites and liars.” Fonda’s behavior at that time, considered treasonous by some, earned her the nickname “Hanoi Jane” among the veterans and POWs of the Vietnam War, some of whom hate her to this day. Since the 1970s Fonda has revamped her image several times over, rededicating herself to her acting career, becoming a fitness guru in the early ‘80s, and marrying billionaire Ted Turner in 1991. In 1988 she delivered a televised apology to Vietnam veterans and their families, a gesture that didn’t mollify everyone, but established some distance between the new Fonda and old Fonda, whose actions, she finally admitted, had been “thoughtless and careless.” As the ’90s progressed, Jane Fonda’s past was less frequently brought up as an issue and seemed to dwindle in importance – until 1999, that is, when Barbara Walters chose to honor the actress in a TV special called “A Celebration: 100 Years of Great Women.” The announcement of the program – which aired in April of that year and which did, in fact, honor Jane Fonda – prompted an instant outcry from veterans and ex-POWs, many of whom vented their indignation via the Internet. Angry recriminations were posted in newsgroups, published in newsletters and on Web pages, and forwarded by email. Unfortunately for Fonda many of these email stories are only partial truths, heavily

She’s a wife, mother, actress and political activist... but some still call her traitor! embellished by their creators. It has recently been pointed out that the two POW’s Larry Carrigan and Jerry Driscoll quoted in that story, have both discounted the story as propaganda stating that they have never met Jane Fonda. Apparently bits and pieces of these texts, along with a few fabrications, were cobbled together by persons unknown to create the “Hanoi Jane” diatribe which still circulates on the Internet today. Only parts of it are true.
Regrets
In a 1988 interview with Barbara Walters, Fonda expressed regret for
some of her comments and actions, stating: “I would like to say something, not just to Vietnam veterans in New England, but to men who were in Vietnam, who I hurt, or whose pain I caused to deepen because of things that I said or did. I was trying to help end the killing and the war, but there were times when I was thoughtless and careless about it and I’m very sorry that I hurt them. And I want to apologize to them and their families. [...] I will go to my grave regretting the photograph of me in an anti-aircraft gun, which looks like I was trying to shoot at American planes. It hurt so many soldiers. It galvanized such hostility. It was the most horrible thing

I could possibly have done. It was just thoughtless...” However, critics pointed out that her apology came at a time when a group of New England Veterans had launched a campaign to disrupt a film project she was working on, leading to the charge that her apology was motivated at least partially by self-interest. In a 60 Minutes interview on March 31, 2005, Fonda reiterated that she had no regrets about her trip to North Vietnam in 1972, with the exception of the antiaircraft gun photo. She stated that the incident was a “betrayal” of American forces and of the “country that gave me privilege.” Fonda said, “The image of Jane Fonda, Barbarella, Henry Fonda’s
daughter ... sitting on an enemy aircraft gun was a betrayal ... the largest lapse of judgment that I can even imagine.” She later distinguished between regret over the use of her image as propaganda and pride for her anti-war activism: “There are hundreds of American delegations that had met with the POWs. Both sides were using the POWs for propaganda. It’s not something that I will apologize for.” Fonda said she had no regrets about the broadcasts she made on Radio Hanoi, something she asked the North Vietnamese to do: “Our government was lying to us and men were dying because of it, and I felt I had to do anything that I could to expose the lies and help end the war.”

The untimely death of
William Holden Holden was living in Santa Monica, California, on Ocean Avenue. He was partial owner of the building at #535, The Shorecliff Towers. Holden’s apartment was on the fourth floor, number 43. He was notoriously private. Even neighbors of many years only received a quick nod from the grump. He also had the habit of disappearing for many days, without notice. That’s why it took so long for someone to find him. According to the autopsy report, courtesy of Celebrity Collectables, Holden was last known to be alive about one week beforehand, when he spoke to his girlfriend Stephanie Powers on the telephone. She indicated that he was drinking, but seemed his normal self and was without complaints. On Monday, November 16, 1981, the building manager, Bill Martin, let curiosity get the best of him. He hadn’t seen Holden in many days, and became very concerned, so he let himself in, via the passkey. As we all know, curiosity killed the cat, and Mr. Martin was sure taught a lesson that day. From the report: “All the lights were off, except for the television, so they used flashlights to get around. Holden was found in a robe and shirt, on the floor. The robe was folded back and beneath the body, with the right arm placed through the sleeve, and the left arm “wadded up” and beneath the body, suggesting that he may have been attempting to dress himself. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition with maggots present and a large amount of putrefaction present as evidenced by the tissue separation and blisters with fluid present (nummy.). Examination reveals an apparent laceration on his forehead approximately three inches in length. Holden’s doctor showed up and theorized that he provably started vomiting blood, and possibly lacerated the lower portion of his esophagus. They called Holden’s dentist, for records, to prove identification. On the scene they found an empty vodka bottle in the trash can, along with four beer bottles and a partially full bottle of vodka on the kitchen sink. (Just in case.) There was a large quantity of blood surrounding the body as well as all over the bedding and blankets.”
From the condition of his body, it was decided that he had been dead for at least four days. Needless to say, Mr. Rigor Mortis had come to visit. Yuck. Holden was 63 years old. Dr. Thomas Noguchi, conducted the autopsy. They found the alcohol level in his bloodstream was .22. Holden was no stranger to tipple, so there was plenty of liver damage. The opinion of the Medical Examiner goes like this: “On the basis of the autopsy findings and the “at scene” investigation, it became clear that the decedent (Holden) accidentally fell due to tripping over the throw rug on the bedroom floor beside the bed, and fell into the sharp edge of the bedside table causing a deep cut on the right forehead followed by profuse hemorrhage. There is no evidence of vomiting blood as there is no evidence of hemorrhage in the gastrointestinal tract or gastric contents in the blood pool on the bed or on the floor. There is no evidence of foul play as the room is not disturbed and the room was well secured as well as presence of numerous blood soaked Kleenex (hows that for product placement?) beside the bed.” In real terms, Holden had tripped on a throw rug (damn things) and hit his head on the nightstand. The really gross part is that he hit it so hard, that it jammed into the wall, and left an indentation of two or three inches into the plaster. There were eight bloody Kleenex’s found next to his body, and a working telephone just inches away from him. Noguchi reckoned that Holden didn’t comprehend the seriousness of his injury, tried to stop the bleeding himself, and passed out from blood loss. He was probably dead within 15 minutes. The end. Full stop. His girlfriend Stephanie Powers said of being notified, “I was on my way to work when I heard the news on the radio that Bill had died. I didn’t cope well at all. Robert Wagner was a comfort to me. Tremendous. But Bills’ death took a lot out of me. I was in mourning for ages afterwards. In any case, RJ could only comfort me for two weeks, because then his wife, Natalie Wood, drowned, and I was like, “Tell me this all isn’t true!”’ Holden was cremated, and scattered at sea. “Neptuned” as the Hollywood underground elite have coined it! Bill Holden left $250,000 in his will to girlfriend Stephanie Powers. She used the money to start an animal preservation fund, in Holden’s memory, The William Holden Wildlife Foundation. Aptly named, I think.

“True Grit” (Western, PG-13, 110 minutes). An entertaining remake of the 1969 film, and more, by Joel and Ethan Coen. Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn easily fills John Wayne’s boots, and Hailee Steinfeld is very special as young Mattie Ross, who hires the old marshal to help her hunt down the varmint that killed her old man. Not a “Coen brothers film,” but a flawlessly executed Western in the grand tradition. Strong support from Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper. Rating: Three and a half stars.
(Drama, R, 115 minutes). Colorful supporting performances help, but a vaguely defined lead diminishes the power you’d expect in this story based on a real fighter. Mark Wahlberg plays Micky Ward, Christian Bale is his goofy crackhead half-brother, Melissa Leo is his possessive mom, and Amy Adams is the barmaid who knows he’ll never get anywhere until he frees himself of his family. The hero comes across as such a victim of lifelong domination that even when he wins, he feels like a loser. Directed by David O. Russell. Rating: Two and a half stars.

10 News anchor & Army Reservist If you flip on your local news weekends at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., you’ll get your news from Angele Ringo, weekend news anchor. Angele is an Army Reservists and part of the KGTV Channel 10 news department. Angele is a 17-year veteran who has reported stories for the military from cities around the world, including Seoul, South Korea; Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands; and Grafenwoehr, Germany. Her most recent Reserve assignment was a one year assignment in Baghdad, Iraq, where she worked as a journalist and public affairs specialist. During her career she has won many awards including the Thomas Jefferson Broadcast Journalist of the year, the highest award given by the Department of Defense for broadcast journalism. Angele is the daughter of a career Navy man. She spent time in San Diego during one her father’s assignments and is happy to be back and working at 10 News. MP: What timeframe were you in Iraq? AR: I was in Basra Iraq from November 1, 2009 to September 5, 2010. MP: What unit were you with? AR: I was assigned to the 367th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment MP: What do you consider your most important story reported while on active duty? AR: I’ve been deployed twice. My role this time around was that of a supervisor. I was in charge of seven broadcasters. As a unit, we did some terrific stories covering everything from the drawdown, to Iraqi security forces, to slice of life stories that illustrated how soldiers passed the time while deployed. In my opinion, the drawdown was the most important thing we covered. It was the largest operation of its kind since the build-up in World War II. We saw troop numbers drop from about 112,000 when we arrived to 50,000 by the time we left… and more than a million pieces of equipment shipped out of country. All of that equipment moved through our area of operation — U.S. Division South. We deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. We left as Operation New Dawn began. It was an historic time to be in

Iraq and I’m proud of the stories — both in broadcast and print — that my unit produced. MP: In all your travels for the military, what was the most interesting place you visited? AR: By far the most interesting place I visited was Kwajalein Atoll, located about midway between Hawaii and Australia in the Marshall Islands. It’s a place where some of DoD’s most advanced weapons systems are developed and tested. It’s sometimes called “The Catcher’s Mitt’ because it’s the target and splashdown point for ICBMs fired from Vandenberg AFB in California. While stationed at Soldiers Radio and TV, I worked as a correspondent for two years reporting on the Space and Missile Defense Command. I got the opportunity to travel to Kwajalein in 1999. MP: Do military reporters get hazardous duty pay when reporting from a war zone? AR: If you are assigned to a designated cmbat zone, like Iraq, you’re entitled to hazardous duty pay.

In that position, I oversaw operations in the broadcast section which included training other broadcasters, writing, producing and editing our weekly five-minute newscast, editing scripts, assigning stories within our area of operation and coordinating and running live or taped segments through the DVIDS hub in Atlanta. DVIDS is the Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System. It’s basically a satellite system we had that enabled us to get our products to the Hub for worldwide distribution.
MP: What did your grandfather do in the Army? And your father and brother? AR: My father was an electronics technician in the Navy. My brother was a Fire Controller and an MP in the Navy. I believe my grandfather was an infantryman in the Army during WWII. He didn’t talk a lot about his service. MP: What were your duties when in Iraq? AR: I was the broadcast supervisor for the U.S. Division South Public

AR: We were in Iraq during a time of transition. So, a lot of my time was spent developing contacts within units around the nine provinces we covered so we could get a team to wherever they were for stories. Getting in touch with people on secure lines to coordinate travel was challenging…often frustrating. On most days broadcasters were in some stage of production on a story... either out on a mission getting it, writing it or editing it. Because of the logistics involved, it usually took a couple days to turn a story. We also hosted civilian media and ran live interviews from Basra featuring key Army leaders in our area of operation which was southern Iraq. We did it all from our little doublewide broadcast trailer and DVIDS satellite dish. We also shot and produced more than three hundred holiday and sports greetings. MP: Did you develop your own ideas for news stories or were you assigned subjects? AR: Both, but most of the time, soldiers enterprised their own stories.
MP: Did you report mostly on soldiers, sailors and Marines or did you also report Iraqi human interest stories? AR: The vast majority of the stories we did covered troop operations but some of those stories included troops that worked with Provincial Reconstruction Teams. PRTs work to strengthen local government and empower Iraqis through a variety of programs. We’ve done stories on micro grants that help Iraqi women to start their own businesses and farmers to end their dependency on insurgents for supplies. There were also stories about school supply giveaways and nursing school programs. MP: Did you have the opportunity to speak with Iraq reporters? AR: While my unit did do some media training with a group of Iraqi journalists, it happened while I was on leave….so no, I never did get the opportunity to speak with local reporters.

Stern: “There was no Limbaugh til I came along” Howard Stern ended months of speculation recently and announced he’s signed a new five-year deal to stay with Sirius Satellite Radio. “If we’re going to stay in radio, we should stay here,” Stern told listeners and his staff recently. “We’re in an incredible position and suddenly there’s real growth. It’s a real business.” Stern rocked the radio world in 2005 when he started at Sirius backed with a $500 million contract. His renewal announcement came with just a handful of regular shows left in his current deal.

Marking the 150th Anniversary The American Civil War (1861–1865), also known as the War Between the States (among other names), was a civil war in the United States of America. Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, also known as “the Confederacy.” Led by Jefferson Davis, the Confederacy fought against the United States (the Union), which was supported by all the free states (where slavery had been abolished) and by five slave states that became known as the border states. In the presidential election of 1860, the Republican Party, led by Abraham Lincoln, had campaigned against the expansion of slavery beyond the states in which it already existed. In response to the Republican victory in that election, seven states declared their secession from the Union before Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861. Both the outgoing administration of President James Buchanan and Lincoln’s incoming administration rejected the legality of secession, considering it rebellion. Several other slave states rejected calls for secession at this point. Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Lincoln responded by calling for a volunteer army from each state to recapture federal property. This led to declarations of secession by four more slave states. Both sides raised armies as the Union assumed control of the border states early in the war and established a naval blockade. In September 1862, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation made ending slavery in the South a war goal, and dissuaded the British from intervening. Confederate commander Robert E. Lee won battles in the east, but in 1863 his northward advance was turned back with heavy casualties after the Battle of Gettysburg. To the west, the Union gained control of the Mississippi River after their capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi, thereby splitting the Confederacy in two. The Union was able to capitalize on its long-term advantages in men and materiel by 1864 when Ulysses S. Grant fought battles of attrition against Lee, while Union general William Tecumseh Sherman captured Atlanta and marched to the sea. Confederate resistance ended after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The American Civil War was one of the earliest true industrial wars. Railroads, the telegraph, steamships, and mass-produced weapons were employed extensively. The practices of total war, developed by Sherman in Georgia, and of trench warfare around Petersburg foreshadowed World War I in Europe. It remains the deadliest war in American history, resulting in the deaths of 620,000 soldiers and an undetermined number of civilian casualties. Ten percent of all Northern males 20–45 years of age died, as did 30 percent of all Southern white males aged 18–40. Victory for the North meant the end of the Confederacy and of slavery in the United States, and strengthened the role of the federal government. The social, political, economic and racial issues of the war decisively shaped the reconstruction era that lasted to 1877.

Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania July 1-3 1863 In July of 1863, General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia of 75,000 men and the 97,000 man Union Army of the Potomac, under George G. Meade, concentrated together at Gettysburg and fought the Battle of Gettysburg. Of the more than 2,000 land engagements of the Civil War, Gettysburg ranks supreme. Although the Battle of Gettysburg did not end the war, it was the great battle of the war, marking the point when the ultimate victory of the North over the South became clear to both sides alike. Here at Gettysburg, on July 1, 2, and 3, 1863, more men fought and died than in any other battle in American history.
HISTORY I MP
The American Civil War is not generally thought of as a naval war, but Civil War ships of both sides played a significant role in the conflict. The role of the Federal and Confederate Civil War naval ships in the war is all the more remarkable when you consider the scarcity of battle worthy vessels owned by either side at the start of the war. The Confederacy had no navy at all in 1860 and the Union Navy was in dismal shape. In 1861 Gideon Welles was appointed as Secretary of the Navy and was ordered by Lincoln to quell the rebellion with an enormous naval blockade of the Southern coast and both the blockade and gaining control
of the Mississippi would be keys to the Union‘s victory. The Union’s first truly significant victory, Grant’s capture of Fort Donelson and Fort Henry in 1862 was enabled by Civil War ships and Civil War marines. Steam Frigate, 1863 Lincoln’s order of a naval blockade struck some of his staff as impractical. Most of the Navy’s vessels were on duty in foreign waters and only three or four ships were available for active duty. The North also had available the USS Constitution but this ship was wind powered in an age of steam power so it was regulated to training duty. Yet an effective blockade of the southern coast would have to cover three thousand miles. Legally, other nations were not bound to honor the blockade unless it was effective. The Union Navy Department hastened to buy commercial vessels and adapt them for warfare and commission the building of other vessels. Because the war had seriously hampered northern shipping business, owners of several large
steamers pressured the government to buy them, but these ships were too large and unwieldy to patrol the shallow coast. Also available to the Union Navy were several Civil War ships laid up in

dry dock for repair, but most of these would take from two weeks to a month to repair. Fortunately, the North had both the resources and manpower to quickly build ships. With two exceptions, all of the United States Navy shipyards were in the northern states. Although many of the navy’s Civil War ships were either on duty in foreign waters or awaiting repairs, the U.S. Navy had been improving its fleet with steam powered vessels for nearly two decades. The steam frigates Colorado, Merrimac, Minnesota, Niagara, Roanoke, and Wabash and the steam sloops-of-war Brooklyn, Dacotah, Hartford, Iroquois, Lancaster, Michigan, Narragansett, Pawnee, Pensacola, Seminole and Wyoming were relatively new ships, having been built since 1855. Of these ships, the Brooklyn was the only one available for active duty when Lincoln first ordered the blockade. The Niagara was far away, on special duty off the coast of Japan and the Dacotah was also in Asian waters. Despite signs of an impending conflict in the months
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania November 19, 1863 On June 1, 1865, Senator Charles Sumner commented on what is now considered the most famous speech by President Abraham Lincoln. In his eulogy on the slain president, he called it a “monumental act.” He said Lincoln was mistaken that “the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here.” Rather, the Bostonian remarked, “The world noted at once what he said, and will never cease to remember it. The battle itself was less important than the speech.” Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
before South Carolina seceded, the Naval department had not sufficiently prepared the fleet. Naval officers who were southerners had been resigning in large numbers since South Carolina’s secession in December 1860 and classes at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland were hampered by this shortage. A newly graduated class was called to active duty to make up for the vacancies. However, there were still 1457 officers and 7600 seamen in the federal navy; by war’s end this number would increase to 7500 officers and 51,500 seamen. These men would man an extraordinary fleet of ships built up by the Union, including the new ironclads, which would change the face of maritime warfare. By repairing available ships, building new ones, and adapting commercial vessels the Union Navy had 212 seaworthy vessels in January 1862.

IT WAS MURDER! La Toya Jackson — “It was murder” she says! “The police say it was homicide, but a homicide is murder unintentionally, but this was intentional. There is no verdict but I have all the proof to affirm that my brother was murdered. He was worth more dead than alive.”
So declared La Toya Jackson in Spain recently. La Toya was in Seville to preside over The International Pure Spanish Horse Show. She wore a blazing red flamenco-style dress designed by Cannavaro. (Apparently, the designer had some trouble fitting La Toya, given that her waistline is a teeny 21 inches!) Truth be told, the residents of Seville were far more interested in the news of La Toya’s Barbie Doll proportions than anything she had to say about her late brother, Michael. Still, that didn’t stop La Toya from going on. She told our man in Spain, Luis Fernando Romo, that Michael was “very sensitive, kind and generous. He donated $400 million dollars to charity. Some people didn’t appreciate his charity and wanted to kill him.” Many have questioned Michael’s
much-vaunted charitable endeavors, even in the years prior to his death. He might have wanted to donate vast fortunes, but his own finances were always in such an iffy state, perhaps his heart was bigger than his wallet? (The less kind take is that he really wasn’t very charitable at all.) I am of the opinion that Michael’s death was a horrible accident– one that had been waiting to happ en for many years, because of his various addictions. But Jackson’s most rabid admirers prefer the murder scenario. As does the Jackson family –“We have no responsibility” they can exclaim. The Jacksons always prefer to be victims, one way or another. The only member of the Jackson family I take
seriously is Janet, who seems to be the most grounded, despite her obvious vulnerability. It seems to me that Janet is the only one who made her own money, not relying on Michael for a penny. Though, naturally, her initial attention came from the fact of her brother’s super-stardom. Anyway, conspiracy theories aside, La Toya enjoyed her stay in Seville because, “It has a lot of cathedrals.” (Did she pray for an 18-inch waist?) She also learned to dance sevillanas, Spain’s traditional dance. Michael Jackson’s sister – be the bereft-of-talent La Toya? – was gifted with a colt. She wants to introduce Spanish horses to California. The pony has been baptized with the name “Sicab.”

In theaters now from director Darren Aronofsky with Fox Searchlight Pictures is the dance of the “Black Swan.” This film tells the story of Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman), a young ballerina who gives her all to the dance to achieve perfection. What she wants more than anything now is to be given the role of ‘The Swan Queen.” Battling with her overbearing mother (Barbara Hershey) has her on an emotional roller coaster. Nina tries to give the artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) just what he wants in order to get the role. What she doesn’t see coming is a rival in Lily (Mila Kunis), a wild seductive dancer who is everything Nina is not. Lily tries to help Nina let loose and be the beautiful dancer everyone believes her to be. But something else is wrong, something deeper, something darker and Nina must be the one to discover it all. Final Word: This film stuns me! Portman is riveting in the lead role of Nina. Everything the viewer needs to know about the character is on Portman’s face. The tragedy, the emotions, the intensity and the beauty of her life as a person and a dancer.
Kunis is just plain wild and sexy as Lily. She takes this character for a ride the audience is not expecting from this actress and she does it extremely well. I can’t wait for Kunis to get her hands on a role like this! Hershey, as the over bearing and emotionally fragile mother, is well done. It is good to see her on the screen once again. Cassel is sleazy but in an oh-soelegant way. He uses dancers up faster than their ballet slippers wear out. Aronofsky has brought about a brilliant piece of film making here. He has allowed the subtle colors and little dialogue to play out to its conclusion. It seems after his praise for “The Wrestler,” he has found what audiences want to see. The cast also includes Benjamin Millepied as David, Janet Montgomery as Madeline, Sergio Torrado as Sergio, Sebastian Stan as Andrew and Wynona Rider as dethroned ballerina Beth Macintyre. There is some nudity and sexy scenes and a few disturbing images so parents might want to keep that in mind. This is definitely a film for adults. Tubs of Popcorn: I give “Black Swan” four and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. I had a grand time with all its twists and turns. The acting was superb, the characters well written and the music was lovely. I can’t think of anything about this film I didn’t enjoy. The cast was intense with a story that is unnerving yet compelling. The costumes are beautiful and the makeup and effects fantastic. The dancing was extreme and even if you might not be a ballet fan – it can at the very least be greatly admired.

top 5 Gone With the Wind (1939) Gone With the Wind is the go-to classic Civil War movie here. Set against the backdrop of the war, we get a look at the drama surrounding one spoiled Southern woman – her loves and losses. Sweeping and epic? Yes. Overly dramatic? Sure. But fiddle-dee-dee, we couldn’t dare leave it off the list. And award-winning, you betcha – Gone With the Wind took home Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Leigh) and Best Supporting Actress (McDaniel). Oh, and Clark Gable, you debonair son of a bitch… you’re not too shabby either.
Shenandoah, Jimmy Stewart plays a Virginia farmer who is forced to become a part of the war he wants no part of when his son is mistakenly identified and taken prisoner. bravery all examined here. Interestingly, Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of World War II, stars as Henry Fleming… no doubt bringing to the film a load of personal experience.
Gettysburg (1993) Gettysburg easily lands near the top of our list of the best Civil War movies… with battle scenes that are among the best of this lot (portions of which were actually filmed in Gettysburg with Civil War reenactors). Jeff Daniels proves yet again that his dramatic chops are deserving of an Oscar – could someone give him an Academy Award already? This film about the Battle of Gettysburg (with Little Round Top, Cemetery Ridge and the Devil’s Den battles also seen) is easily the holy grail of war films for Civil War buffs.

head and shoulders above as the best Civil War movie of all time, drawing rave reviews for historical accuracy and the dramatic recreation of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, an African-American Union regiment, and their assault at the Battle of Fort Wagner. Besides that, the acting is top-notch, led by the talented Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick, and Morgan Freeman. Amazing battle scenes, brilliant actors and truly great storytelling are all at work in Glory. Among other awards, Denzel Washington won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Well deserved.

TRON: LEGACY
Opening in theatres is the highly anticipated return to Flynn’s Arcade with director Joseph Kosinski and Disney’s “Tron: Legacy”. This film tells the story of Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), now grown son of the vanished CEO and game creator Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). Living the wanderers’ life, Sam continues his fathers’ technology work in unorthodox ways. One night, his fathers partner Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) gets a message from Flynn’s Arcade. Sam goes to visit the arcade that’s been abandoned since 1982. Soon he discovers his fathers’ workroom and through a keystroke Sam is inside the grid. There he meets Clu (Jeff Bridges – sort of) and Sam discovers that Clu has taken over the grid from his father. With the help of Quorra (Olivia Wilde), Sam must find his father and escape the grid before Clu can wreak havoc outside the grid. FINAL WORD: Hedlund as the Flynn does a fine job of portraying the young computer genius. He has the attitude of his “father” that the original “Tron” watchers will appreciate. There were nice action scenes and he played them out well. Wilde was equally as energetic as Quorra. There are intense fight scenes where, even in heels, she managed to hold her own. My big thrill was seeing Michael Sheen as the flamboyant, canetwirling master of words Castor/Zuse. He is freakishly delightful in this role. Now, that all being said, the story is very predictable, there are no surprises, shocks or moment of “I am your father Luke” or anything of the sort. The story is what it is. At the same time it is visually fun to watch. The graphics are very cool and without spoiling anything – a double dose of Jeff took some getting use to. I have no doubt this will be a blockbuster weekend for the original Tron lovers and a whole slew of newcomers to the franchise. There are bound to be some awards for the special effects and the music by Daft Punk was right in with the action. Other cast include: James Frain as Jarvis, Beau Garrett as Gem, Anis Cheufra as Rinzler, Owen Best as the young Sam Flynn, Dale Wolfe as Irv Culpepper and Cillian Murphy as Edward Dillinger. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Tron: Legacy” three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. This film is a visual treat as it will be playing in Real 3-D. It is not necessary to have seen the first film to keep up with the story but it would be a fun way to introduce the family to who and how Tron came to be. In 1982 when the original “Tron” was released, it instantly became a cult classic with its video game look that was appealing. Who could have foreseen that the world created by writer Steven Lisberger would come full circle with even greater graphics in a still growing video world!
