I confess I did not know of its existence until I read their ad in an airline magazine. I am familiar with Horatio Alger, the man, who inspired generations of boys, and later girls, with stories of people overcoming difficult circumstances to succeed, but I was ignorant of the association that carries on his vision.

and officials treating each other with respect. Kids learn good sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially from parents and coaches. When they see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike manner, they learn the real winner in a sporting match is the one who knows how to behave with dignity. Whether they win or lose. Everyone knows it’s suicide to poke fun at the revered. Some people are so well liked, they become untouchable. They get a free pass even when being a jerk. This article ignores common sense and instead is dedicated to all the guys who ended up playing second fiddle to the great Ali, guys like Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, Kenny Norton, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, et ce-

part from, “I float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” the most distinctive, memorable phrase uttered by Muhammad Ali has to be: “I am the greatest, the greatest of all time!” Floyd Patterson’s thoughts on that boast: “He’s always saying he’s the greatest, but he never finishes that statement. If you’re patient and listen to him long enough, you can fill in the blank.” If you check with Sports Illustrated, you’ll discover Ali, the boxing icon, has been their cover subject 37 times. Only Michael Jordon has been on the cover more often, 47 times.

Wheaties cereal. Does he deserve the recognition? Sure he does. You’d have to be an ignoramus not to realize how glorious a boxer he was. He deserves every praise for his skills in the ring and the fun character he created. Over his illustrious career, he was like a comic book super hero. Every rhyme, every amusing utterance became fodder for the press. When reaching the twilight of their years, athletes, like statesmen, attain a certain degree of sanctity. All mistakes are forgotten, while the exploits are exaggerated. Case in point, the inscription on the current Wheaties’ cereal box claims Ali, “is the Greatest, an Ambassador of Sportsmanship.” Whoa, we’ve got to draw the line somewhere. We could count on one hand the number of times Ali ex-

hibited that trait. Yes, he is legendary, and the ex-champion’s life will become folkloric, much the same as Davy Crockett. Aside from killing a bear when he was only three, Ali has accomplished much. As time passes his exploits will be extolled and likely overblown. It’s up to the boxing historians to keep things real. Tennis star, James Courier Jr., himself a good sport, once said, “Sportsmanship is when a guy walks off the court and you really can’t tell whether he won or lost. He carries himself with pride either way.” Dartmouth College’s Athletic Director Harry Sheehy adds: “It is your response to winning and losing that makes you a winner or a loser.” Good sportsmanship is when you see teammates, opponents, coaches,

be elected Mayor of Los Angeles? Could he ever earn the NBA’s Good Sportmanship award? We know that’s never going to happen. But still, everyone comes to see him play because they know he’ll be lighting up the scoreboard. Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. (his slave name) was 18 years-old and fresh off his light-heavyweight gold medal performance at the Rome Olympics when he was refused service by a waitress at a “whites-only” restaurant in his native Louisville, Kentucky. Clay found that despite his new acclaim, he was not immune to the racism that was so prevalent at the time. After that incident and a scuffle with some white boys, the disgusted Clay threw his Olympic gold medal into the Ohio River. Unable to skirt controversy, Clay, aka “the Louisville Lip” then faced a 30 yearold small town police chief in his first proAli on the original ‘Wheaties’ cereal fessional fight. Hunsaker never made it into the Pro Boxing Hall of Fame, but he was inducted into the Law Enforcement Hall of Fame. In 1964, Clay announced his name change to Cassius X, then Muhammad X, then Muhammad Ali after defeating Sonny Liston to win the world heavyweight title. On November 22, 1965, Floyd Patterson, the former Heavyweight Champ, became Ali’s victim #22. In order to gain support or perhaps ingratiate himself to fellow Blacks, Ali kept referring to Patterson as “an Uncle Tom” and “the White man’s champ.” In their match, Ali, who was three inches taller and outweighed Patterson by 15 pounds, stated before the match he wanted Patterson to suffer. Almost every time Ali hit Patterson, he taunted him. The crowd ended up booing Ali and felt he had treated the ex-champ with cruelty and disrespect. Interviewed after the fight, ex-champion Joe Louis said: “He (Ali) could have knocked Patterson out whenever he wanted, but let’s face it, Clay is selfish and cruel.” Continues on next page

Frazier’s aid was forgotten when the two men signed a contract to fight on March 8, 1971. Keep in mind the sport has been around for over 150 years. The first “World Championship” took place at Farnsborough, England on April 17, 1860 between the British Champion Tom Sayers and the American champ John C. Heenan. To be fair, we’d have to weigh, not only a person’s transcendence over fighters of his day, but over the fighters from all 16 divisions over the past 150 years. Joe Louis (68-3) held the heavyweight title for longer than anybody (11 years, 8 months, 7 days) and made more successful defenses (25). Henry Armstrong (151-21-9 with 101 KOs) is the only boxer to hold world titles in three different weight classes simultaneously. Sugar Ray Robinson (175-19-6-2 with 109 KOs) lost just once in his first 123 fights to Jake LaMotta, a defeat he avenged five times in their classic rivalry. Only stoppage defeat came when he challenged Joey Maxim for the light heavyweight crown, and then was leading on points until overcome by heat so extreme it forced the replacement of the referee in the tenth. San Diego’s own Archie Moore (183-24-10-1) would be in the running. He fought 168 times and was 39 years old before finally getting a shot at the world title. He took full advantage and outpointed champion Joey Maxim to take the crown. His 131 knockouts is the most by any boxer. Featherweight Willie Pep had a record of 230-11-1 with 65 KOs and achieved tremendous success despite suffering near-fatal injuries in a plane crash. He won his first 63 bouts, then went 72-0-1 before losing again. Julio Cesar Chavez had a ring career that lasted 25 years and his record during that time, 108-6-2 (87 KOs). Chavez won his first 88 fights. Benny Leonard won the world lightweight championship in May 1917, and retired as champion in January 1925, making him the longest-reigning lightweight champion. A 1974 World Boxing reader poll ranked Ali as the 5th greatest heavyweight in history. In 1975 historian Nat Loubet ranked him ninth. In 1976, John Durant, author of The Heavyweight Champions, ranked him as the fourth greatest. After all the research, I find it’s impossible to name “The Greatest Boxer” of all time.

Muhammad Ali’s most memorable moments in the ring 1. KO of Foreman to win back the title (Oct. 30, 1974) – At the time, the 25 year-old Foreman had a record of 40-0 with 37 knockouts and was considered the hardest puncher ever. He had won the title by stopping Frazier in the second round, then defended his title twice with a first-round KO of Jose Roman and second-round stoppage of Ken Norton. At 32 years of age, Ali was considered a major underdog. Out of necessity, he came up with this “Rope-a-Dope” idea where he laid on the ropes while Foreman punched himself out. His plan worked and by Round #8, Foreman a very tired fighter. As a result, Ali landed two hard shots on the exhausted fighter to knock him out and become only the second man in history to regain the heavyweight title.

9. Knockout of Sonny Liston in rematch (May 25, 1965) – Ali won by first-round knockout with the phantom punch that many to this day insist didn’t land. It marked the end of Liston as a serious contender. 10. Loss to Larry Holmes (Oct. 2, 1980) – Anyone who saw the fight cringed at the site of an aged Ali unable to move and unable to compete against Holmes. Several times, Holmes turned to referee Richard Greene and pleaded with him to stop the fight. When Greene didn’t, Holmes turned back to battering Ali in what was the saddest bout of his career. Local boxing scribes put “The Greatest” under a microscope: “To be fair, Ali was drawn in so many directions. There were the racial tensions, Vietnam, the division within the Black Muslim faith and the fact he was making a ton of money with everybody wanting a piece of the action.”

2. First of the Ali vs. Frazier fights, (March 8, 1971) – Both undefeated, Ali (31-0) and Frazier (26-0) met in their prime for the heavyweight title. Frazier simply outworked his opponent and punctuated the big win by dropping Ali in the 15th round with a left hook.

“Ali was the greatest if you consider he had more women chasing after him than Elvis, the Beatles, and Tiger Woods combined. I imagine even the great Wilt Chamberlain called for advice. His ego became so big he had to turn sideways just to get through a doorway.”

3. Frazier’s corner throws in the towel (Oct. 1, 1975) – The Thrilla in Manila is considered one of the greatest heavyweight fights ever. With both fighters gasping for air, Frazier’s trainer Eddie Futch stopped the bout after the 14th. At that point Frazier couldn’t see and Ali could hardly breathe.

4. TKO of Liston to win the heavyweight title (Feb. 25, 1964) – The brash Cassius Clay was a huge underdog and his behavior leading up to the fight caused many to think he was a nut case. But Ali thoroughly outboxed Liston and even when he got liniment in his eye and unable to see for an entire round, he stalled by moving around the ring to avoid being hit. It was one of the most brilliant performances of his career against a man everyone feared. 5. Win over Cleveland Williams (Nov. 14, 1966) – Ali was two months shy of his 25th birthday when stopping the veteran Williams in the third round at the Astrodome. Williams, a quality fighter with a 65-5-1 record, met Ali in his prime. He was lightning fast, exceptionally accurate and his punches had significant power. 6. Knock down by Henry Cooper (June 18, 1963) – Cooper floored Ali in the fourth round with a left hook. It was the first time in his career he had

tary service. In that match, he put on a spectacular performance to signal he was, for certain, back in the hunt for the title. 8. Loss of title to Leon Spinks (Feb. 15, 1978) – Spinks, a 1976 Olympic gold medalist, came into the fight with just a 6-0-1 record. He simply outworked Ali and won the title in one of the most significant upsets in boxing history.

lobbying Lobbying (also lobby) is the act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in the government, most often legislators or members of regulatory agencies. The ethics and morality of lobbying are dual-edged. Lobbying is often spoken of with contempt, when the implication is that people with inordinate socioeconomic power are corrupting the law (twisting it away from fairness) in order to serve their own conflict of interest. ). The difficulty in drawing objective lines between which lobbyists are “good lobbyists” and which ones are “bad ones” is compounded by the cleverness with which lobbyists or their clients can speciously argue that their own lobbying is of the “good” kind.

Bribery, is an act of implying money or gift giving that alters the behavior of the recipient. Bribery constitutes a crime and is defined by Black’s Law Dictionary as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty. The bribe is the gift bestowed to influence the recipient’s conduct. It may be any money, good, right in action, property, preferment, privilege, emolument, object of value, advantage, or merely a promise or undertaking to induce or influence the action, vote, or influence of a person in an official or public capacity. In economics, the bribe has been described as rent. Bribery in bureaucracy has been viewed as a reason for higher cost of production of goods and services.

Those who enjoy it seem to be a minority in the world. That’s why liberty must not only be preserved by those who cur-

rently benefit from it; it must also be fought for and constantly renewed for future generations, because there are always those who wish to restrict or eliminate our freedoms. The Obama administration’s ham-fisted attempt to require that contraceptives and abortifacients be offered to employees of Catholic and other religious institutions is a serious threat to our civil liberties. Yes, federal (through EEOC oversight) and state governments already play this role and have for a time. According to the Guttmacher Institute, “Some 28 states have mandated coverage of birth control and 20 of those have some sort of exemption for religious employers.” New York and California are among the 28. But do we really want government to

continue to take the place of individual conscience? Should government continue to dictate to its citizens how to order and conduct their lives? But wait. Didn’t President Obama give in to the concerns of Roman Catholic bishops by excusing Catholic institutions from paying for contraceptives and “morning-after” pills for their employees? Not exactly. The president disingenuously shifted the burden to insurance companies, which have now been ordered to offer the pills “free” to any employee who wants them. Nothing is “free.” The cost will eventually be added to the price of the policies, which the employer will wind up paying for anyway. The cost will then be passed along to the employee.

The bishops weren’t fooled. After initially expressing “cautious optimism” over the administration’s “first step in the right direction,” they issued a statement, reports the Wall Street Journal, saying they still have “serious moral concerns” and cannot support the announced compromise, despite the fact that many thousands of religious institutions will be exempted from the mandate. This issue was always about more than contraceptives and who pays for them. It is about individual liberty and whether the government under “Obamacare” has the constitutional right to dictate to private businesses and church-related entities when such orders violate conscience and religious beliefs. Would the administration also order a conscientious objector to engage in combat? It’s the same principle. If the administration can get away with this, there will be no stopping it. If government can force an insurance company or institution to pay for a birth-control pill or a morning-after pill, it can, under the same authority, conceivably force them to pay for a euthanasia pill for those others have deemed unfit to live. Too extreme? Most inhumanities begin with extremes. What is to stop the government from such behavior? If the Constitution’s protection of religious freedom is to be annulled, along with the already voided “endowed” right to life written into the Declaration of Independence, by what moral

or legal authority can anyone stop government from doing anything? This is more than a slippery slope; this is an avalanche and it threatens our most fundamental rights, without which we morph into something other than the America we have known. Responding to the president’s remarks in which he pulled back on his insurance company mandate, Amy Ridenour, chair of the National Center for Public Policy Research, weighing in on the cost of providing contraceptive benefits, said, “Here’s the problem: The ‘savings’ substantially comes from pregnancy avoidance. That’s what religious-based opponents of the birth control/early abortifacient mandate objected to in the first place.” There are two possible remedies: A decision expected this spring by the Supreme Court that Obamacare is unconstitutional, or a complete repeal of the health-care law, which would require a Republican Congress and a Republican president. What other liberties does the Obama administration want to subvert? In his Super Bowl Sunday interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, President Obama appeared to complain about the Founding Fathers, whom he suggested, “...designed a system that makes it more difficult to bring about change that I would like sometimes.” It’s called the separation of powers, Mr. President, and it was created to protect the nation from a dictatorial executive branch.

That’s no surprise in any economy, but what caught your eye this week was that the number has soared. Veterans are returning to the civilian workforce in waves, and they’re reaching out to you for employment. Fortunately, you might have a place for someone with military experience but making room on the payroll isn’t all you’ll need to do. In the new book “Field Tested” by Emily King, you’ll learn how to keep the best employee you may ever have. Every year, and particularly now, tens of thousands of military personnel leave their old jobs to join the ranks of civilian workers. You’d love to tap into a veteran’s discipline, that can-do attitude, and the training that comes from working for everybody’s favorite Uncle. But there are things you need to do before you post a Help Wanted ad. There are considerations on both sides of the desk, and preparation is key. First, understand that most employees don’t leave a job, they leave a manager. Managing properly for retention, therefore, is what you ultimately want. Since the average veteran goes through three jobs before acclimating to civilian workplaces, it’s to your advantage to anticipate the challenges that will come with transition. At issue is that the military is a very different kind of business than the one you have in the civilian world, and you can’t make assumptions. Your

new hire may never have had to negotiate for salary or benefits. He or she may be unaccustomed to a more casual, less-regimented office with unique relationships between employees. Office hours are gentler. Even the uniforms are different. So what can you do for your new hire to help with what amounts to a diversity issue and a “culture clash.” How can you keep him or her working for you? Arm yourself with an understanding of what your employee is leaving behind and how it affects thinking. Make sure he or she knows what the job entails, how departments work together, and what is expected. Don’t assume anything. Pair a new employee with an established co-worker who is a veteran, too. Check in often and keep the doors of communication wide open. You’ve seen the posters and ads reminding you to hire a veteran. Does it really have to be this hard? Author Emily King has studied this subject at length and she says that it could be, but that knowledge is essential for “[A]nticipating and heading off challenges…” I liked that King, who has a passion for this subject and has “committed” herself to ensuring that veterans are prepared for civilian workplaces, gives employers lots of tools for keeping those challenges in perspective. I also appreciated the first-hand accounts from veterans who’ve made the transition. Be aware that this book is occasionally repetitive, may feel like babysteps at times, and is nowhere near reading-lite. Still, if you’re eager to strengthen your business in a relatively easy way, “Field Tested” is a book you’ll salute.

Divorce and VA Disability Compensation: Facts and Fallacies — Part 1

Introduction: Many military personnel, spouses, former spouses and retirees are victimized by myths and misstatements about disability payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs and their effect on money issues in a divorce. Some people claim that VA benefits can be divided in a divorce, just like a military pension. Some claim that VA disability pay is “off limits” in calculation of child support and alimony. Even lawyers have a hard time understanding whether – and how – a court can order garnishment of VA payments to accomplish the prompt and full payment of family support ordered by the judge. Those who have served our country in uniform, and those who have accompanied them, are entitled to honest answers. Below are some of the questions and charges made, followed by accurate and straightforward answers. Q. I’ve heard that Congress clearly intended to protect veterans’ benefits from being awarded to anyone other than the veteran who earned those benefits under any circumstances. A. This myth has been making the rounds recently. Like the stories of Bigfoot, Shangri-La and the Loch Ness Monster, it has a core of “believers.” And like these examples, it’s not true. Congress wrote the law on veterans’ benefits, found at Title 38 of the U.S. Code, with an eye toward exempting VA benefits from most creditors’ claims; ordinary creditors are barred from execution or garnishment of VA payments. But family members are not ordinary creditors. They are, in fact, the subject of special protections in Title 38, both for child support and alimony. Q. But my ex-husband told me that the federal law on “Veterans’ Benefits,” Title 38, U.S. Code, Section 5301 and following provisions, was written by Congress to protect veterans’ benefits from third-party awards under any legal process whatsoever. Is that true? A. Not at all. The case that lays down the law on this is Rose v. Rose (U.S. Supreme Court 1987). There the Court made it clear that 10 U.S.C. Section 5301 (the “anti-attachment clause” in Title 38) does not apply to court orders which require a veteran to support his or her family. VA benefits can and should be considered as income when the judge is deciding how much support a spouse or children need and what a veteran is able to pay.

I personally agree that DoD needs to cut costs and save some tax payers’ money; however, they do it ALL at the wrong place. I am active duty and we struggle to do our job because we don’t have the funds to buy BASIC supply and BASIC equipment to do our job, while DoD spend billions of dollars on “high tech” weapon systems that are over-paid and not needed. But who benefits of this? The politicians and their friends... Same with the manning. We are already way UNDER-MANNED, but they cut our numbers again... with ERB, PTS, etc. Always the workers (bottom enlisted personnel) who are cut, while the higher ups stay there,

And finally, I believe there is WAY TOO MANY civilians in the Navy and Dod... they take a lot of military positions, but cost a lot more, and MOST double dip: they retire from active duty, then their high-placed friends “civilized” their position, and they keep doing the same job after they retire from active duty, but now as a GS 11 or higher... Gone But Not Forgotten

Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe, January 19, 1809-October 7, 1849) was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.

He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts; he was orphaned young when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia, but they never formally adopted him. He attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. After enlisting in the Army and later failing as an officer’s cadet at West Point, Poe parted ways with the Allans. His publishing career began humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to “a Bostonian.” Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In Baltimore in 1835, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-yearold cousin. In January 1845 Poe published his poem, “The Raven,” to instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two years after its publication. He began planning to produce his own journal, The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), though he died before it could be produced. On October 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.

While the Horatio Alger Association is nonpartisan, the Republican Party is missing a great opportunity to resurrect Horatio Alger and return him to the center of American society. Instead of allowing some liberal Democrats to own the issue of “compassion” and promote victimhood and class warfare among their constituents, Republicans should feature people on the campaign trail who tell their stories of achievement, encouraging others not to “settle,” or become mired in difficult circumstances. One of the honorees at last year’s Horatio Alger Awards dinner, Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, said: “People who believe they’re victims will become victims. People who believe they can win, eventually will win.” Ailes grew up in humble surroundings, but refused to allow those surroundings to define him. Instead of focusing on failure and poverty, why aren’t Republicans telling stories of success and prosperity, or at least self-sufficiency and what it takes to improve a life? Success is not a secret. It is as old as civilization itself. The late radio broadcaster Paul Harvey made a career out of telling stories about people who overcame hardship through perseverance and tenacity and by embracing virtues that have helped those who live by them to experience a better life. Also appearing at the 2011 Alger dinner was actor Tom Selleck, who said, “There are no magic formulas, no single book, or even educational degrees that can generate the spirit of achievement through perseverance. Nothing creates and inspires resolve more than knowing achievement is possible for someone who came from circumstances like your own. When the hardships of life threaten to sever hope from you, there is no prosthetic for an amputated spirit, no therapy for the atrophy of a dream, no medication for the sickness that breaks the heart and withers the soul. There is the American Dream.” Republicans are known for wanting to reduce the power of government. That is more likely to occur when the power of the individual increases. “You can do it!” parents cry as they take the training wheels off their kids’ bikes and give them that last guiding push down the sidewalk. Take the “training wheels” of government off those Americans who rely on government far too much. Convince these Americans that they can make something of themselves, if they would only try. These should be the objectives of Americans of every political stripe. Horatio Alger got it. So can Republicans.

or a rich kid kicked out of design school, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche created one of the greatest legacies in automotive design with the Porsche 911 — one that will survive far beyond Porsche’s death last week at the age of 76.The son of company founder Ferry Porsche, F.A. or “Butzi” as he was known spent most of his career at his eponymous firm Porsche Design, where he oversaw the styling of thousands of products from watches to yachts, many with the tag “Designed by F.A. Porsche.” But it’s the 911’s emergence in 1964, when Butzi Porsche was just 25 years old, that made him a historic figure. While his father and grandfather had been famous German engineers — the original Ferdinand Porsche engineered the first Volkswagen Beetle — F.A. Porsche chose to study design. A year after enrolling in a prestigious school, Porsche was in his own words “kicked out,” and took at job at his father’s fledging car business in 1957. At the time, Ferry Porsche had created the successful Porsche 356, but needed a follow-up model. He set the car’s basic layout —a rear engine, a short wheelbase for agile handing — but pushed the designers and engineers to fashion a more sporting look than the men who built the Beetle had produced so far. Prowling the auto shows of Europe, F.A. Porsche formed an idea of how the car should look as a smooth, curving fastback, rejecting the flat angles popular in American cars of the era. “I just think you start creating edges when the body of a car is bad… they are lines that support something that ties the designer down,” Porsche would say years later. The new car’s design spurred a dispute with the older designers in Ferry Porsche’s shop, to such a degree Ferry went around them, taking his son’s blueprints to the body fabricator. The first production-ready model, called the 901, appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1964, and after Peugeot objected to the name, Porsche changed it to 911. Despite the timelessness of the 911’s shape, F.A. Porsche believed his greatest design came a few years later, with the Porsche 904 race car. When the company went public in 1971, the Porsche family withdrew from management roles — although F.A. Porsche would remain a presence on the company’s board and in its design studios. “He established a design culture in our company that has shaped our sports cars to this very day,” said Matthias Müller, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG. “His philosophy of good design is a legacy to us that we will honor for all time.”

This issue, it’s the 2012 Acura TSX sedan we test, which is the entry level compact from the high-end Honda manufacturer. Our tester happens to be the 25th Anniversary “Special Edition,” (SE), which comes well equipped with an aim towards a more youth oriented consumer. Included in the SE’s base price is the $2,500 upgrade Special Edition package, which is then discounted by $1,500 to arrive at a final $30,810 retail. Beautiful red gauges are easy to read while the seating is comfortable front and rear. Still, TSX SE is no slouch. Zero to 60 mph arrives in about 7.2 seconds, with quarter mile times equal to what a bone stock ’68 Roadrunner 383 did back in 1968. Acura TSX is a fine luxury compact offering midsize dimensions and peppy performance. The SE upgrade enhances performance and sporty aspects of the TSX, and is recommended as a better value than a base model. In comparison, sibling Honda Civic or Accord can be parked in your driveway for less, but there’s no mistaking the Acura badge delivers the next step up on Honda’s monarchy ladder. Tough American Super-Bike that Clipped Harley’s Wings The Crocker was built heavy duty for maximum performance, custom-tailored to the individual rider’s order, and built in Al Crocker’s own facility. Each buyer could choose color, degree of chrome trim, and even gear ratio and displacement. Al Crocker founded Crocker Motorcycles in 1936, having spent 20-plus years honing his skills engineering and designing bikes for Indian. Al and his former foreman at Indian, Paul Bigsby (who later went on to invent the famous Bigsby tremolo for guitars) knew they had the muscle and know-how to give the competition a serious run for their money. When Crocker introduced their first hand-built speedway racer bikes, they flat-out killed the competition, not just sweeping the boards – setting new standards for performance and quality that far exceeded Harley-Davidson,

Indian and everyone else for years to come. They reigned as the baddest bikes around until 1942, when the company folded – unable to support it self due to a slow build time, material shortages brought on by the war, and an economic downturn. Incredibly, only around 100 bikes were produced during this time, but the legend and fervor lives on – with Crocker being among the rarest and most coveted motorcycles in the world to this day. At the MidAmerica Auctions motorcycle auction in January 2007 in Las Vegas, a 1941 Crocker big tank (equipped with a three-gallon cast aluminum fuel tank) motorcycle sold for $230,000. At the Gooding & Co. auction in 2006 in Chandler, a 1931 Crocker 61 sold for $236,500. At the Bonhams & Butterfield 2006 auction in New York, a 1937 Crocker “Hemi-head” V-Twin brought $276,500. At the 2006 auction of Bator International in California a 1939 Crocker 61 cubic-inch side valve model sold for $200,000. So confident was Crocker with this magnificent machine that he offered to refund the full purchase price to any buyer who was beaten by a rider on a factory stock Harley or Indian bike. Chargers Report: The NFL Draft By Art Garcia Jr With the NFL Draft just two weeks away, all eyes of Chargers fans will focus on A.J. Smith with speculation that an unproductive draft and another season without a playoff appearance could cost both him and head coach Norv Turner their jobs. Having missed the playoffs the past two seasons, the Chargers are no longer regarded the class of the AFC West. Rather, the prohibitive favorite appears to be the Denver Broncos – now led by future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. If that’s not bad enough, many in the NFL ‘know’ consider the Kansas City Chiefs the second-best team in the west with the Chargers ranked slightly ahead of the Oakland Raiders – a team they are just 1-3 against the last two seasons. After finishing 8-8 last year, it appears that it’s now or never for both Smith and Turner. Whether he’s feeling the pressure of duplicating his drafts of 2004 and 2005 or the football gods threw him a bone by making available one of

the more talented free agent classes in recent memory, Smith struck swiftly once free agency began. Having lost three Pro Bowlers from their high-powered offense, Smith wasted little time in filling those voids on the squad. Gone are Vincent Jackson, Kris Dielman and Marcus McNeill. Enter receivers Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal, guard Tyronne Green and left tackle Jared Gaither. By re-signing Green, Gaither and former Pro Bowl center Nick Hardwick, the Chargers return the same five starting offensive linemen that played well together at the end of last season. uba is known as the world leader in high-quality tobacco. Cuban cigars are rolled from these tobacco leaves and the filler, binder, and wrapper come from various locations on the island. The Cuban government controls all cigar production within the country. Cuban cigar rollers are called torcedores and are thought to be the most skilled in the world, capturing high respect within Cuban society. When Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1492, he came across tobacco. One year later, European explorers took it back to their land. Spain was the first European country to embrace smoking, which soon became popular in Turkey, Russia, Japan, and Persia. Tobacco plantations arose in eastern Cuba during the 18th century and spread westward. Natives viewed the tobacco, or cohiba, as a miraculous medicine, using it in ceremonies. A royal monopoly on tobacco was declared in 1717 by King Felipe V of Spain. It was not until 1817 that Royal Decree countermanded the monopoly. This permitted free trade to resume between Cuba and the rest of the world through Spanish ports. During the 19th century, thousands of immigrants from the Canary Islands worked in the tobacco industry. In 1962, a U.S. trade embargo was instituted on Cuba by President John F. Kennedy, as sanction for the communist government of Fidel Castro. This embargo prevented U.S. residents from purchasing Cuban cigars legally on the market. It is still illegal for residents of the U.S. to buy or import a Cuban cigar no matter where the item is in the world. For years, tobacco was the second largest Cuban export after sugar. Pinar del Rio province is the current site of most production. Cubatabaco and Habanos SA are the two manufacturers and exporters of Cuban machine and handmade cigars. These products carry a high status and are often imitated, with a reported 95 percent of Cuban cigars sold in the U.S. being counterfeit.

President John F Kennedy ordered an aide to buy him as many Cuban cigars as he could just hours before he authorised the U.S. trade embargo - which subsequently made them illegal. Kennedy asked his head of press and fellow cigar smoker Pierre Salinger to obtain ‘1,000 Petit Upmanns’ on February 6, 1962, so he could have them in his hands before they were deemed contraband. Then, seconds after he was told the next morning that 1,200 of Cuba’s finest export had been bought for him, he signed the decree to ban all of the communist state’s products from the U.S. The re-surfacing of the story, initially recounted by Salinger to Cigar Aficionado magazine in 1992, comes with the passing of the 50th anniversary of the embargo yesterday. JFK, he said, called him into his office and said he needed ‘some help’ to find ‘a lot of cigars’. He wanted ‘1,000 Petit Upmanns’ and needed them by ‘tomorrow

morning’. Salinger added: ‘I walked out of the office wondering if I would succeed. But since I was a solid Cuban cigar smoker, I knew a lot of stores. I worked on the problem into the evening. ‘The next morning, I walked into my White House office at about 8am, and the direct line from the President’s office was already ringing. He asked me to come in immediately. ‘How did you do Pierre?’ he asked, as I walked through the door. ‘Very well,’ I answered. In fact, I’d gotten 1,200 cigars. Kennedy smiled, and opened up his desk. ‘He took out a long paper which he immediately signed. It was the decree banning all Cuban products from the United States. Cuban cigars were now illegal in our country.’

Super Low Interest Rates at Tesoro in Vista

Homebuyers found super low interest rates and an amazing incentive package were too good to pass up last month. Six Phase II homes were sold at Tesoro between February 25 and March 25.
