Will it be a
blockbuster Summer?
By Jeri Jacquin Movie Maven
This year is a little bumpy for films and don’t think studios haven’t noticed. Fans seemed to have become irritated in regards to Hollywood changing up their beloved super heroes, promise of action that isn’t happening and no laughs in their comedies. No film has yet stood out but the whisper on the street is a dude in a cape might be able to change all that! That’s only the beginning of the potential summer blockbusters. Here’s a look at what else is coming so get your calendar out and mark the dates! BLOCKBUSTER, continued on page 4 >>

In June, Man of Steel finally hits the big screen with Henry Carvill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Russell Crowe as Jar-el telling the story of Cal/Clark’s humble beginnings both from outer and inner world! Michael Shannon get a chance to perfect evil as General Zod! For families the boys are back in town! Mike and Sully of Monsters, Inc. return but in a prequel as the story shows how
the two met back in college. Missing vampires? Then, check out Byzantium with the very talented Saoirse Ronan who recently was in the Stephanie Meyer’s book to screen The Host. Also coming is the highly anticipated World War Z with Brad Pitt. Seriously, even if you aren’t a zom-
bie-holic (which I proudly proclaim to be one) the trailers alone are a tease of fun! Toward the end of June Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx bring all the action one could want with White House Down. In July – The much talked about Only God Forgives with the ever good-looking Ryan Gosling who ends up looking no-so-good in this Bangkok underworld thriller. The Lone

Ranger comes to the big screen with Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp as a duo fighting justice. My personal excitement is saved for those
yellow minions as Despicable Me 2 hits theatres. Also for families comes the slowest fast group of ground crawlers with Turbo! The best film of the year enters quietly as The Way Way Back will definitely be a film worth seeing and then talking about. The noise you
hear of clanking metal comes from director Guillermo Del Torro’s adventure of Pacific Rim. If that isn’t enough metal for you then
I’m sure Hugh Jackman will be glad to oblige as The Wolversine 3D movie. For more Part Two films there is Bruce Willis and the gang for Red 2 and Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James and Chris Rock for Grown Up 2. Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds team up as the police force for the undead with R.I.P.D. In August – prepare yourselves for glory as

300: Rise of An Empirebrings fans flocking to see the worlds most beloved Spartans. In other mythology, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens in August. Matt Damon puts his life in the hands of director Neil Blomkamp, of District Nine fame, in Elysium with Jody Foster. Kick Ass 2 brings out young super heroes back for another installment. New York City has secrets to be unraveled with The Mortal Instrument: City of Bones. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost don’t stay off the screen for long and once again save us from ourselves with The World’s End.
For families and fun beyond the clouds is Disney’s offering of Planes! In September – just in time to wrap up the summer and back to the books is Vin Diesel back in his iconic role with Riddick. Our favorite knife wielding take-no-crap Danny Trejo returns in Machete Kills. Speaking of senior citizens Sylvester Stallone hits the screen again with Escape Plan. Those who were as creeped out as I was with Insidious can be prepared to experience it all over again with Insidious 2. But have little fear; you could always run to the theatre next store for the anticipated return of a beloved book to screen with Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2! That’s the summer folks! Of course there will be many more films with the good, bad and in between but Military Press will make sure to stay on top of each with reviews to help you pick and choose the best entertainment for summer.

Nixon v. Obama Is Obama worse than Nixon?
“When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal.” So said Richard Nixon in his interviews with David Frost. Nixon was talking about wiretaps and surreptitious entries to protect lives and safeguard national security in a violent and anarchic war decade.
By John Byrne Comparisons have been made between Barack Obama and Richard Nixon following the string of recent scandals that have rocked the White House. Some historians, however, may regard such a comparison as being unfair to Nixon. Nixon ended the Vietnam War. He created the Clean Air and Water Acts. Most importantly he normalized relations with China and created cooperative projects with the USSR such as the ApolloSoyuz Space Project all during the height of the Cold War. At a time when the Cold War was bringing us closer to the brink, he brought us peace. After five years, President Obama has given us
scandals and Obamacare. Nixon was a very popular President. He won re-election in 1972 with 61 percent of the popular vote, 97 percent of the Electoral College, and forty-nine of the fifty states. His victory was a bigger landslide than Reagan’s in 1984. If not for Watergate, he would have gone down as one of the greatest Presidents of the 20th century. One would have thought that the Presidency would become more transparent. In Obama’s first speech to his senior staff in January 2009, he stated, “I will also hold myself as President to a new standard of openness .... Let me say it as simply as I can: Transparency and the Rule of Law will be the touchstones of this presidency.” For a politician from Chicago, that seemed like wishful thinking. He hails from the same political breeding grounds as corrupt Chicago bred Governors George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich and corrupt Congressmen Dan Rostenkowski and Jesse Jackson Jr. Lessons to be learned from such politicians include, “If you are not cheating, you are not trying. Never admit guilt under any circumstances. When your Attorney General has been accused of multiple abuses of power, simply say

Over 30 Years experience
“If you are not cheating, you are not trying. Never admit guilt under any circumstances...” istration prefers loyalty over competency. This was evident when he had United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice explain that a mob attacked the Libyan Embassy after the mob saw a video on the Internet. The President knew it was an organized terrorist attack but he tried to cover it up. There is overwhelming evidence that the embassy asked for and was refused aid. Ambassador Stevens and the former Navy SEALS knew they were left to die. If not for the heroics of the SEALS, many more Americans would have died. The President rewarded Rice for her loyalty by offering her the job of Secretary of State. The President’s hopes to be compared to the likes of FDR and Lincoln are now just a distant fantasy. He is embroiled in one of the most scandalous presidencies in history. He has an Attorney General selling arms to the Mexican drug cartels who come back to kill our border guards and citizens. The AG has spied on the very journalists who once adored President
that embraces radical jihadist refugees to come to the U.S. for free housing and education where they learn to kill innocent civilians. If the President wants to show true leadership he will ask for Attorney Holder’s resignation immediately. At the very least, he should have Holder resign himself, stating that he wants to spend more time with his family. The President should then go to the White House briefing room and state that he fully intends to prosecute any of his staff under whose watch corruption is found. If the roads from all these unforgiveable scandals lead back through these political hacks and henchmen to their Chicago boss, he should resign just as Nixon did. On second thought, that would leave us with President Joe Biden. Either way we are doomed.

FOCUS supports military families Posted by Corina Notyce, DCoE Public Affairs on May 2, 2013 It was January 2011 when we found ourselves among our squadron’s families, a somber group awaiting the evening’s deluge of information: the predeployment brief. My husband was embarking on his third deployment, but this was a firsttime experience for our daughters (ages 3 and 5). One of our goals was to find a way to support our daughters’ emotional needs through the lengthy separation. With no idea of what to expect or what sort of resources might be available, we diligently listened and took notes. We were not expecting that on this night we would find a resource that would lead to a transformational journey of family bonding and compassion, giving us the means to conquer HEALTH

some of life’s most challenging moments. And then came the introduction to FOCUS(Families OverComing Under Stress). FOCUS taught us to develop ways of communicating our emotions, gave us tools to alleviate anxiety and stress, and connected us with other beneficial resources. Two tools that we found particularly helpful in giving our daughters the ability to identify their emotions were the program’s “Feelings Fox” and “Feelings Thermometer.” The “Feelings Fox” is a friendly cartoon character that depicts the many emotions a child can relate with, and the “Feelings Thermometer” accompanies the fox with its four color ratings of green, yellow, orange and red (comfortable to uncomfortable).
It’s hard to believe these two simple tools can assist a five-year-old with communicating frustration and how it makes them feel, but it does! We took to pointing out our daily thermometer reading for each member of the family and talked about ways we could encourage one another to be “in the green.” Even Dad could interact through email when possible. We felt more connected, and it allowed us to identify concerns early and intervene when the girls let their emotions get the best of them. Personally, as the parent on the homefront, the FOCUS team was a valuable sounding board for my stressors and apprehension. They helped me keep a calm perspective and brainstorm solutions to family problems that we would work through in the
training sessions so that I could implement them at home successfully. I felt supported and had a genuine relationship where I could trust our family’s interests were being looked out for. Deployments and reintegration can be extremely difficult for service members and their families at home. The knowledge we gained at FOCUS helped our family through two consecutive deployments, and we have even found some of the exercises tremendously useful during the transition of an overseas move. The FOCUS program is great because it can be tailored to meet the needs of individual families; we would rank it as one of the most important programs for military families. In other words, if you’re looking at the problem wrong, you’re doomed to fail. If you see it correctly, it’s a piece of cake. You see, making a 6 out of the symbol “IX” using only one line is easy. You just go like this: SIX. Sometimes people fail in their marriage not because of any lack of effort, analysis, or care. Sometimes people fail because they’re locked in the wrong paradigm. If you’re not seeing your marriage or your spouse in the proper light, then you won’t succeed. And no amount of effort will change that. The only thing that will get you different results is a DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. Once you adopt the right perspective, fixing your marriage can be as easy as placing an “S” in front of “IX” to make “SIX.” For more info, get the free report 7 Secrets for Fixing Your Marriage at www.MarriageFitness.com. New film explores meditation & PTSD Professor Richard J. Davidson, one of the world’s leading neuroscientists, took the Dalai Lama’s advice to apply the same rigorous methods he used to study depres- sion and anxiety to the study of compassion and kindness. Dr. Davidson, who was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2006, did just that, and the results of his studies at the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds are portrayed in the fascinating new documentary, “Free The Mind.” The film, which premiered at the prestigious International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam, poses two fundamental questions: What is consciousness and how does it manifest in the brain and body? And is it actually possible to change the brain physically through mental practices alone? By studying Buddhist monks and other long term meditators, Dr. Davidson found that it is actually possible
to rewire the brain through meditation and other mental skills training techniques, and he has dedicated himself to applying this discovery to improve the lives of people throughout the world. The facts are stark. More American soldiers have committed suicide after returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan than were killed in the combat itself. A recent report from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs put this figure at 22 soldiers and veterans committing suicide every day. Many suffered from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Likewise, the number of American children diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and treated with pharmaceuticals such as Ritalin has skyrocketed in recent years.

Once you have separated from the service you have 10 years to use all of your benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill and 15 years to use you Post9/11 GI Bill benefits. Although separating from service “starts the clock” on your 10-year time limit, you should know that if you rejoin active-duty service for more than 90 days, during the 10- year period, your 10-year clock is reset. In other words, you get 10 years from your last discharge.
Fact #2.
The GI Bill is not Federal Financial Aid. The GI Bill is not considered Financial Aid in the traditional sense. College and University financial aid departments do not consider the MGIB financial aid because it is normally paid directly to you, not the school. Most schools will require you to sign a promissory note or apply for student loans to pay them upfront. You will then be required to pay these loans - hopefully with your GI Bill payments.
Fact #3.
You can stop and start using the GI Bill as needed. Unfortunately, many people beGI BILL, cont’d. on Page 24

McCain advises women to avoid the military Sen. John McCain told the top U.S. military chiefs he could not advise women to join the service with a sexual-assault scourge the military has not contained. “Just last night, a woman came to me and said her daughter wanted to join the military and could I give my unqualified support for her doing so. I could not,” the Arizona Republican, a Vietnam veteran and ex-prisoner of war, told the uniformed chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. “I cannot overstate my disgust and
disappointment over continued reports of sexual misconduct in our military,” said McCain, who followed his father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, into the Navy. “We’ve been talking about this issue for years, and talk is insufficient,” McCain said. The Pentagon estimated in May 26,000 military members experienced “unwanted sexual contact” last year, up from 2011’s 19,000 cases. Yet only a fraction of that number -- 3,374 -- filed sexual-assault reports with military police or prosecutors, the annual Pentagon report said.
Joint combat uniforms coming for all branches
A Congressional committee voted recently to end servicespecific camouflage in an amendment that would push the military toward creating joint combat uniforms by 2018. Committee members expressed frustration over the millions of dollars the services have spent to field camouflage patterns that focus more on creating a visual brand than effective concealment for the battlefield. House Armed Service Committee members want the Pentagon to develop a joint combat uniform over the next five years. Different patterns could still be designed for specific geographic requirements, however, each service would not design their versions.

Navy to scrap requirement for windshield decals
Beginning next month, the Navy will no longer require service members to display vehicle decals to get on base. The change isn’t expected to affect base security and will save the service about $750,000 a year, officials said. Guards will still check ID cards of all drivers. The windshield stickers were mandated years ago to ensure that vehicles entering military bases meet various safety, emissions and insurance standards in states where the cars are registered. As state safety requirements have become more uniform in recent years, the Navy said the stickers have become an unneeded security liability. The Army and Air Force have done away with the decals. In a frequently asked question page explaining the policy change, the Navy said the stickers are easily counterfeited and could turn service members’ vehicles into potential targets. The service is encouraging sailors to remove the stickers as soon as the policy goes into effect to ensure they “blend in better” with the general population and to prevent them from “being singled out for any criminal or terrorist attack.” Another note from the FAQ page: Gate sentries who are active-duty service members will still be required to salute commissioned officers — traffic permitting.
San Diego 7-11 franchise owners donate to military
The 7-11 Franchise Owner’s Association (FOA) of San Diego recently made a donation of $10,007.11 to the Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station. The donation was from proceeds from FOA’s annual golf tourney. The Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station began its operations in 2004 to address the needs of injured servicemen and women returning from overseas. While the San Diego FOA has been making donations on a regular basis to a number of charities in the San Diego area, the decision was reached this year to make a single donation, to one charity, to create as significant of an impact as possible. www.MilitaryPress.com • editorsdesk@militarypress.com

‘The East’ writer, star Brit Marling By Jeri Jacquin & Jenise Jacquin In theatres this Friday from director Zal Batmanglij and Fox Searchlight Pictures comes another amazing story about THE EAST. The film tells the story of Sarah, an undercover operative who is sent inside an anarchist group who want to bring down a huge corporation. Sent in to learn about leader Benji played by Alexander Skarsgard, she is met with trepidation but quick acceptance. Now she must discover the group’s secret and then do what is right. Brit Marling plays Sarah and I was so thrilled to meet Brit a few years ago when she was promoting ANOTHER EARTH (one of my favorite films) and had the best conversation about that film. Now, once again we meet and I’m thrilled, along with Film Brat, to once again sit and chat on a sunny rooftop about her new film, inspirations for writing and a lot of other girl stuff that isn’t going to make it into the interview! Jeri: How have you been? I’ve been fantastic, how have you been? Jeri: Great and I’m so excited for you. I haven’t seen you in about what, three years? I know it’s been a long time Jeri: You’ve been so busy in that time. I’ve told Jenise all about you. Wow, that’s so nice. Jeri: You two will hit it off famously and she saw the film as well. You did? Did you like it? Jenise: I did and I love it. Jeri: She did have that momentary pause with the scene everyone will be
talking about. You know, Alex’s bathtub scene. Who doesn’t have a moment with that scene! Jenise: He’s really hot, just have to say. Yes, he is, and he’s so very kind as he is handsome. We were very lucky to get to work with him. Jeri: How did you manage to get him to work on the film? He read the script and just got it. The script was like a weird litmus test and some people said I have to do this movie. We met with Alex and were really worried about Benji as a character because how many actors are you really going to believe has charisma and gravitas like that at that age that your going to follow them into the wood. Where a bunch of kids are going to drop out of their lives and join him on this adventure. It would have to be someone with would and feeling and Alex has all of that and we were very fortunate that he wanted to do this film. Jeri: We are going to backtrack a little, when did you write this? Last time we talked you were getting ready to do SOUND OF MY VOICE and you said you had other ideas going on. Was this one of them? Yes! I was writing this a little after that period. We spent the summer on the road in 2009 just living our lives. It wasn’t at all research for work.

Tebow’s signing puts him in perfect position By Dan Wetzel Sports.Yahoo.com The strange part of the circus that surrounds Tim Tebow’s every move – including reports Mondaythat he’s going to sign with the New England Patriots – is that he does so little to keep it alive. He doesn’t court the media. He doesn’t say outlandish things. He doesn’t complain about coaching decisions or teammates. He doesn’t publicly beg for another chance. Even the quarterback’s outward displays of faith (Tebowing, for instance) are nothing that dozens of other NFL players don’t do each week after scoring a touchdown. Tebow is a good soldier, a young player who never said he was as good as his fans claim or publicly ripped into his critics. He, even during his star turn with the Denver Broncos in 2011, always claimed he was just looking to get better. The circus never cared. His supporters never stopped pushing, his detractors never stopped blasting and the media never stopped feeding that ratings-gold beast.

It stands to reason the buttoned-up Patriots won’t be trotting Tebow out for a huge stand-alone press conference the way the New York Jets did – come meet our backup! It’s unlikely Belichick will spend a lot of time discussing possible uses for his new signee on the field, including schematic changes and thus boxing himself into a public relations corner. It’s even odds that Belichick merely mumbles out some statement about Tebow being just another player at minicamp, just another guy on the roster. And then he tells Tebow that if he ever goes jogging without a shirt on, he’s cut. Either way he’ll at least have the chance without the weekly drama
For Tebow, this is a dream come true at the end of a nightmare stretch, the safe harbor amidst the forever storm of his career. And it nearly crushed his career. So now it’s New England. Now it’s Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. And now for Tebow it’s the perfect place and the perfect opportunity at the absolute most desperate of times. No one pulls the stakes out from under the big top like Belichick.
In the Heart of Orange County
of will he play or won’t he play?,will he throw down field well enough to unseat Mark Sanchez?, or should that throw make the nightly lowlight segment?. With one foot out of the league and no one else biting, it couldn’t have gotten any better for Tim Tebow than this.

Early Super Bowl predictions By Baily Decker In 2012, there were a lot of teams that had chances of making it to the Super Bowl. In 2013, that’s not completely true. The San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Ravens all have good chances at winning the Super Bowl in 2013, as all of these teams made the divisional round of the playoffs and are manned by powerful quarterbacks. However, it’s going to be hard for some of the teams listed to win playoff games. Why? Because the best teams in the NFL are unbelievably good. San Francisco, Seattle and Denver all had topfive defenses in 2012. The 49ers and Seahawks both made great moves in the offseason, as the Seahawks brought in Percy Harvin, Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett and the 49ers added Anquan Boldin, Nnam-
di Asomugha and Eric Reid. The two teams both did very well in 2012, and both are poised for big years in 2013. In the AFC, the Broncos and Patriots appear to be the top two teams. Denver had a top-four offense and defense in 2012, and the team made noticeable improvements to bolster the defensive line, the wide receiving corps, the secondary and the offensive line during the offseason. Denver also has Peyton Manning. The Patriots have Tom Brady as their signal-caller. New England hasn’t won a Super Bowl since the 2004 season, but with a defense that forces turnovers and Brady manning the offense, they will contend. While Matt Ryan’s Falcons and Aaron Rodgers’ Packers will be in the mix, and while Joe Flacco’s Ravens are coming off of a Super Bowl triumph, I expect the 49ers, Broncos, Seahawks and Patriots to be the last four teams standing. Denver is as hungry as ever
BAIL BONDS
following a heartbreaking postseason exit in 2012, and with Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Wes Welker and Tavarres King catching passes from one of the best quarterbacks of all time, it’s reasonable to expect Denver to be in the AFC Championship While the Patriots are definitely one of the AFC’s best teams, the Broncos appear to be ahead of New England right now. In the NFC, the 49ers and Seahawks will be going at it all year long. The two teams are very similar, as both have stars and a ton of depth. NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis are the cornerstone defensive pieces in San Francisco. The secondary and pass rush—two units that struggled mightily in the playoffs—have been upgraded, so the 49ers should be better in 2013. Richard Sherman anchors Seattle’s defense. The Seahawks surrendered a mere 15.3 points per game in 2012,
while the 49ers only allowed 17.1. The Seahawks lost Chris Clemons to an ACL tear, but they should be fine with Avril and Bennett. On offense, the two teams are also very similar. Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson are two young, dynamic quarterbacks with the potential to take their teams to the Super Bowl multiple times over their careers. Both teams have great receivers, as Boldin, Quinton Patton, Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis (San Francisco) and Harvin, Sidney Rice and Golden Tate (Seattle) are all playmakers. At running back, Frank Gore and Marshawn Lynch are hard to bring down. However, if it came down to the 49ers and Seahawks in the playoffs, I would go with the 49ers. They have more experience, a better offensive line, a better offense and a better defense. Seattle’s pass rush isn’t great, while the 49ers are loaded with depth on defense (and offense).

A man escapes from a prison where he’s been locked up for 15 years. He breaks into a house to look for money and guns. Inside, he finds a young couple in bed. He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair. While tying the homeowner’s wife to the bed, the convict gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom. While he’s in there, the husband whispers over to his wife: “Listen, this

If he wants sex, don’t resist, don’t complain... do whatever he tells you. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is obviously very dangerous. If he gets angry, he’ll kill us both. Be strong, honey. I love you!” His wife responds: “He wasn’t kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me that he’s gay, thinks you’re cute, and asked if we had any Vaseline. Cont’d. from Page 12 lieve that once you apply for benefits you have to remain enrolled in school to get the full benefit. Thankfully that’s not true; you can use the GI Bill for any period of time, take time off and re-apply to use it again at a later date. (Keeping in mind fact number one) You can also use it as you progress to your education goal. If you use your benefits wisely your GI Bill benefits can help you finish your associates, and work on your bachelor’s, and later complete your master’s degree.
A “month” of benefits doesn’t always mean a month. The GI Bill benefit provides 36 months of education benefits. The term “months” can often be confusing. The “36 months” of benefits does not mean you have only 36 months to use it, nor does it mean you must use it all in one 36 month period. There are two ways the term month is used. One way for active duty and the other for veterans. The following should help you to better understand this aspect of the Montgomery GI Bill.
For Veterans: Every time you use the current maximum “payment rate” of MGIB benefits you use a month of your 36 months of benefits. In this example a “month” doesn’t really mean a month. If you are on active duty and you go to school full-time for four months, but your tuition is only $1,000, you will still be charged for four months of your 36 month entitlement. In this example a “month” actually does mean a month.
Fact #5.
The GI Bill pays according to the number of credits you take. The GI Bill payment rates are based on several factors, the biggest being your credit load. For example a full-time student using the Montgomery GI Bill will get up to $1564 a month while a half-time student will only get half that amount. Learn more about how Montgomery I Bill Payment Rates work. You can apply for the GI Bill by filling out and following the instructions on VA Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits. For more details, see the Post-9/11 GI Bill Application Process and get started using your benefits today. Joint combat uniforms
