DENNIS RODMAN
a diplomatic worm Dennis Rodman figured out the “Look at me!” game about mid-way through his NBA career. Despite being one of the greatest rebounders and defenders in league history, Rodman never got the attention he deserved, mainly because he was always overshadowed by more talented and media-friendly players. In Detroit, there was Isiah Thomas. In San Antonio, David Robinson was the officer and the gentleman everybody loved. And of course, there was some guy named Michael Jordan in Chicago, who was the ringmaster of the greatest show on earth. So Rodman came up with a plan to be the freak show in the circus, the one who people just couldn’t take their eyes off of. He dipped his body in ink and emerged with crazy tattoos from his toes to the tip of his head. He saved that small area for not ink, but dye, casting fluorescent colors in continued on page 5 >>

Jong-un is a bratty, brutal prince from a darker era By David Horsey North Korean leader Kim Jong Un seems like a fictional character out of a satirical doomsday movie — maybe a sequel to “Dr. Strangelove.” That fact that this immature brat and his gaggle of grim, aging generals actually rule a country and have the capacity to disturb the international order seems absurd in an era of global interdependence.
son those princes could claim that power, in truth, was because they were surrounded by troops of big guys with swords, armor and horses with a license to kill any peasant who complained too loudly. Little Kim’s belligerent threat to start a thermonuclear war that would consume South Korea, Japan and various outposts of the United States is the tough talk of a tyrant in the ancient mold. But Kim is all bluff. He does not have the bombs or the missiles to carry out his threats. His country is a geopolitical pipsqueak and an economic charity case. If the real world powers, China and the United States, chose to make it happen, his regime could be snuffed out. There are plenty of complicating geopolitical factors that would make that result difficult to achieve, but one still has to ask: why? Kim is a hereditary ruler who oversees a brutal prison state. Why allow such a leader and such a system to exist in the modern era? It would be a true advance of civilization if the world community were to come together and get rid of this throwback

DIPLOMATIC WORM Cont’d. from Page 16
his hair, making him the beacon of freak and attention for the Chicago Bulls. But that just wasn’t enough for “the Worm” who clearly became addicted to his newfound attention. He pierced nearly everything on his body and often wore mascara and wedding dresses to photo shoots around the Windy City. Rodman got what he wanted in the worst way: attention. He was finally a somebody. Unfortunately, when he retired, he became what most professional athletes fear: a nobody. Outside of a few appearances on the pro wrestling circuit and as the train wreck on “The Apprentice”, Rodman became irrelevant. No longer in the spotlight, he wandered aimlessly through life and court appearances for bankruptcy and being a deadbeat dad, a result of going all Shawn Kemp and having about nine kids with six different woman. But now, Rodman is back on center stage as an American “diplomat.” I thought we had seen the world’s biggest circus with the Manti’ Te’o scandal, but the sight of Rodman traveling the globe to meet with North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un is truly mind-boggling.
He has discovered his fountain of freakishness and gotten another fix for his addiction to attention. Before his trip to North Korea with the Harlem Globetrotters, Rodman didn’t know Kim Jong-Un from Kim Bassinger. I can guarantee Rodman didn’t know anything about the crimes against humanity the North Korean regime is responsible for. Rodman didn’t know anything about the 200,000 people in a network of political prisoner camps, who are deprived food and water and tortured on a regular basis. However, after meeting Kim JungUn for a few hours, Rodman concluded that he was, “a cool guy.” Kim Jung-Un must’ve have gone all Gangnam-style on the Worm, or something. What could they possibly have talked about? Kim Jong-Un was smiling for the photo opportunities and back-slapping Rodman, but you kind of got the feeling he was telling his interpreter that Rodman was a bigger horse’s ass than Lance Armstrong, and making the Worm the butt of all his jokes. Why can’t the Worm just find a good sinkhole to get lost in? He really needs to disappear for good. Source: http://sportstrip2.blogspot. com

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: I was sitting in the barber shop waiting for a haircut and picked up your April, 2013 issue. On the topic of gun control though, I think that guns are not the problem. I believe it is the people that wield them. To put a ban on guns only further puts law abiding citizens at risk and reduces our ability to protect ourselves. Law enforcement can’t get to a location instantly and it only takes a perp a few seconds to commit the crime and then flee. Damage is done and then law enforcement is doing cleanup instead of prevention. Cops today are becoming more and more lazy as it is and with the government not cutting back on unneeded spending it thins out our law enforcement forces as well. A Veteran- whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve- is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for the amount of “up to and including my life.” Not many people understand that anymore. — Jeremiah
Dear Editor: For starters, I appreciate your audacity too question in the time of “sequestering” why a tax payer federally funded program has invested in massive amounts of war fighting material. I along with many other veterans aging from Vietnam officer veterans too active duty members have a growing concern for the state of affairs currently escalating in our America. I find it reassuring to see a publicly available news group addressing my mutual concerns, especially when I read other news sources and find not an inclination of doubt in our countries futures. Heck I even at this point wonder if it is such a good idea too even email and voice these concerns but thanks too your article I allow myself too take off the “tin foil hat” and have confidence that I am not alone in my doubts. Yes I believe there are some serious changes coming in the future, there are far too many correlating events such as General Mattis being asked too retire. In the mean time I suppose I just continue to keep my ear to the ground. Thank you for your time. — Name Withheld By Request

Navy vet helps men deal with sexual abuse history

C. Allen Ruyle is a Psychotherapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (California License LCS26809) focusing on the treatment and support of men who have experienced non-consensual sex or sexual abuse. He also works with individuals dealing with other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. He is a US Navy veteran.
C. Allen Ruyle
Q: I notice you use the phrase “men who have experienced non-consensual sex”. Why? A: The terms “victim” and “survivor” can be difficult for men to identify with. As men, we reject seeing ourselves as victims, so my language applies to all men who have experienced non-consensual sex, whether as children or adults. Also, boys who have their first sexual experience when they are very young sometimes
see themselves as lucky or “early developers” and tend to reject the fact that they were victimized; however, someone that young is simply unable to give true consent to sexual activity because they are not emotionally mature enough to do so. Non-consensual sexual activity can have longlasting negative repercussions on the way we view ourselves and the world.
Q: Why focus on the military? A: The military culture, while building and celebrating enormous strengths, presents special challenges. We are taught to be strong, powerful, reliable leaders and inter-dependent team members. Dealing with sexual abuse can make us question our masculinity, our sexuality and our power. It can prevent us from building strong relationships and trusting others as well as ourselves. The self-doubt and ABUSE, cont’d. on Page 21

Coffee: Who doesn’t love Starbucks? While you slowly drain your wallet you will also destroy your diet. Even “skipping the whip cream” you’re kidding yourself if you try to justify it. to host the most practical and desirable amenities for buyers in all stages of life, such as immense great rooms with optional fireplaces, sizeable dining rooms, oversized bedrooms, large spaces that can be used for crafting and other activities, super laundry rooms, abundant closet space, and plenty of storage for toys and holiday decorations. In addition, three- and four-car garages give homeowners the extra space they have always wanted to store their RVs, boats, dirt bikes and ATVs. Adding to the value of these remarkable homes is the option of solar panels. Not only do solar panels offer a green alternative to traditional energy consumption, but they also offer homeowners the advantage of saving on the cost of electricity. Sav-
ings range depending on each home’s energy usage, but can amount to thousands of dollars per year for the average user. There may also be state and federal rebates to provide further incentives. Three planned public parks including an 11-acre, future sports park will provide an abundance of recreational opportunities, including baseball and soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, playgrounds and picnic areas with lighting. There’s even a future skateboard park. The private recreational center will be the centerpiece of community fun. Once completed, residents will enjoy a swimming pool, spa, children’s pool, barbecues, picnic areas, playgrounds and a 3,500 square foot recreation building for special events. Secret VA benefits for seniors
This is the first in a series of “secrets” revealed by author Victoria L. Collier, JD, in her book “47 Secret Veterans’ Benefits for Seniors, Benefits You Have Earned... but Don’t Know About” Recurring, non-reimbursed medical expenses of BOTH the veteran and the spouse are deductible from gross income. Recurring, un-reimbursed medical expneses are costs paid out of pocket for medical expenses. These expenses typically include medical premiums, such as Medicare premiums, supplemental health care premiums, prescriptions, doctors’ visits, travel to and from doctors’ visits, home health care, assisted living facility care and nursing home care. For example, let’s say your gross income is $4,000 a month. You subtract out your Medicare premium ($96.40 for each spouse = $192.80), your supplemental health insurance premium ($125 for each spouse — $250), your medications ($500 for husband and $300 for a wife = $800), and the home health care or assisted living facility costs ($4,200). Total recurring, un-reimbused medical expenses in this example come to $5,442.80. Thus, recurring, un-reimbursed medical expnese exceed total income. The goal we are trying to achieve, if we want to receive the maximum pension allowance from the VA, is that we zero out our income. If we do that, then the VA will pay the maximum
amount permissible under the level of pension we qualify for medically. If the income is not zeroed out, that does not mean you are not eligible. It only means that the VA is not going to pay you the maximum. Instead, the VA will pay the difference between your excess income (after all permissible deductions) and the maximum permissible pension limit. In the example above, thte total recurring, non-reimbursed medical expenses exceeded the gross monthly income by $442.80. Thus, the VA should pay the claimant the maximum for any of the levels he or she is seeking. Assuming the veteran applied for pension with aid and attendance, the VA
should pay $1,949 per month because in this example the veteran is married. However, let’s change the example slightly. Let’s say the income is the same at $5,000 per month. All expenses stay the same except medications. The veteran receives his medications free from the VA instead of paying out of pocket, and his wife doe snot take any medications. Now their total recurring, non-reimbursed medical expenses are only $4,642.80 per month, an amount less than their combined monthly income. But this does not mean they are not eligible. Rather, the VA should pay the veteran approximately $1,591 ($5,000 income minus $4,642 = $358 excess income: $1,949
maximum pension minus $358 excess income = $1,591 payment by VA for pension with aid and attendance). This is a simplified version of the calculation the VA conducts. There is actually more that goes into the calculation that is beyond the scope of this book. Thus, the figures above may not be exactly the amount the VA would pay, but they are very close. Expanding access
The President’s proposed budget would ensure that care and other benefits are available to Veterans when and where they need them. Among the programs that will expand access under the proposed budget are: $460 million in home telehealth funding, which helps patients monitor chronic health care problems through innovative uses of the telephone, a 4.4 percent increase over the current year; $422 million for women-specific medical care, an increase of nearly 14 percent over the present level; $799 million for the activation of new and enhanced health care facilities; $116 million for the construction of three new national cemeteries; and $8.8 million for “VetSuccess on Campus” at 84 facilities, a program that helps Veterans transition to college life.
guilt that often follow such encounters can be paralyzing, even decades later. We try to hide our history. Carrying such a secret can be incredibly corrosive and destructive. Q: How can you help? A: By giving my clients a detailed understanding of how men experience these events, providing proper support and guidance and, most importantly, a safe space to do the emotional work needed to overcome the past. This leaves the corrosive secrecy and negative self-image behind and replaces it with a better understanding of earlier experiences, a clearer conscience, a stronger sense of self and a more positive, healthy future. All eyes CHARGERSon Telesco REPORT as draft nears
By Art Garcia, Jr. With the NFL Draft just two weeks away, it appears the football gods are not doing the Chargers or first year GM Tom Telesco any favors as the front office staff strategizes what to do with the 11th pick of the first round. For the past couple of months it appeared the Chargers had a great chance of landing Oklahoma senior Lane Johnson and shoring up their most pressing need on the team – left offensive tackle. However, with four of the teams picking in front of them recently trading for veteran quarterbacks, speculation is the top three tackles and the two best guards could be off the board before the Chargers even make their pick. Trading up in the draft might have been a possibility a few years back when the Chargers actually had the talent other teams want. Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps matched up on the links...
...and the winner was
By Jay Busbee Two of the world’s most famous golfers aren’t anywhere near an Augusta tee this week, but they took to the links just the same. Michael Phelps and Michael Jordan teed it up at the 12th annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. And the winner was ... Michael, of course. Phelps, that is. The world’s greatest swimmer defeated the world’s greatest hoopster by a 73-72 score. Phelps appears to be one of those rare athletes who switches sports to golf late in life and somehow manages to make a respectable go of it. He and Jordan had never met before last fall, when they connected at a taping of David Feherty’s Golf Channel show during Ryder Cup week. At that event, Phelps wasn’t exactly boiling over with witticisms upon meeting his idol: “He’s the greatest... I’m at a loss for words.” (Hey, we didn’t watch the guy ‘cause he was the best talker in the pool.) Neither one of these guys is a threat to make any kind of pro golf tour. But as they’ve shown of late, it’s likely they’ll be tearing up fairways at country clubs around you for years to come. HELP WANTED

Test Drive by Greg Zyla
2013 BMW X1 Entry Price: $30,800 Price as Tested: $45,595 This week, we’re driving BMW’s 2013 X1, rated by the EPA as a mid-size and by BMW as a compact five seat SUV. X1 is the lowest price BMW available, and although it’s new to American consumers it’s not to Europeans, where X1 is in its fourth year of sales. Specifically, X1 starts at $30,800 in rear-drive mode, while our tester all-wheel-drive begins at $32,350. The top line X1 with a V6 starts at $38,600. With impressive entry prices like this, potential consumers can now join “Bimmerland” with this multifaceted X1, although a few dollars more gets you into a nice 3-Series sedan, which starts at $36,850. (By the way, “Bimmer” is slang for BMW vehicles, “Beamer” or “Beemer” for BMW motorcycles). Overall, X1 delivers in areas that are important to today’s SUV lovers, especially in the ride and performance categories. Our tester came in xDrive 28i dress, which is BMW’s nomenclature for all-wheel drive and four cylinder power. The 2.0-liter Twin Power Turbo inline four produces 240-hp and 260 lb. ft. torque and is the same engine the 3-series
Bimmers utilize. This potent engine mates to an impressive eight-speed automatic with sport and automatic modes, allowing acceleration to 60 mph in a very peppy 6.4 seconds. Better yet, X1 then delivers 22 city and 33 highway EPA numbers, which, considering X1’s near two-ton weight, is again extraordinary. Thus, it clearly comes into focus that a well-geared eight-speed automatic can do wonders attached to a turbo four, delivering “muscle car era” acceleration and impressive overall fuel mileage. X1’s exterior design is impressive, with the BMW “kidney grille” most prominent. It’s a great entry point for BMW lovers and worthy of serious consideration. Likes: Style performance, transmission, interior, BMW legend. Dislikes: Only a four-year/50,000 mi. warranty, power driver seat extra.

High-flying motocross action returns to SoCal The world’s top freestyle motocross riders are coming back to compete at Red Bull X-Fighters Glen Helen in Southern California, May 11 at 1 p.m. Red Bull X-Fighters has returned for its 13th year as the world’s premier FMX series, and has expanded to include new stops in Osaka, Japan and Pretoria, South Africa. The series kicked off its six-city world tour this weekend in Mexico City, where 38,000 spectators packed into the Plaza de Toros, the world’s largest bullfighting arena, to watch Tomas Pages of France take first place. Close on his heels, Dany Torres of Spain took second and Levi Sherwood of New Zealand rounded out the podium with third place. The series now continues on to Dubai on April 12, and following the return to Glen Helen on May 11, the riders will travel to Osaka (June 1),
Madrid (July 19) and finish the season in Pretoria (August 31). Known for its amazing motorcycle aerobatics and rider athleticism, the series also features exceptional locations that add to the visual spectacle, with events held on the sandy beaches of Dubai, in Madrid’s Las Ventas bullfighting arena, beside the Pyramids of Giza and at Moscow’s Red Square. Glen Helen was added to this list in 2012, with a truly massive course that dwarfed the footprint at previous Red Bull X-Fighters events. This course, carved out of the hills of San Bernardino, will return bigger and better than ever in 2013. To purchase tickets, visit the series website at www.redbullxfighters.com and go to the Glen Helen event page, where the ticket link is located.

By Jen Bosier, Forbes.com After so much action and fast-paced politics, I think we can all agree “Injustice: Gods Among Us” needed a breather issue. There are several landbased superheroes from whom we have not heard in awhile, leaving gaping holes and questions within the story. This week, “Injustice: Gods Among Us #13″ takes a breath from the main action to show us a glimpse into the mind of The Flash, who has been noticeably absent since early on in the series. The tone of this issue is far more somber than previous issues, which is probably why it succeeds as a breather issue. Despite the fact that we’re only seeing the inner workings of Flash’s mind, through him we are able to see how the rest of the world is reacting to Superman’s and Wonder Woman’s regime. As the Flash runs along a stretch the longest stretch of straight road (naturally it’s in Australia, Tom Taylor’s stomping ground), he remembers a demonstration in Melbourne. This is the first time we have seen normal people reacting to the global ceasefire. At first, when Superman and Wonder Woman were merely disposing despots and dictators, global morale appeared to be well and good. As the superheroes’ reach seems to extend, acceptance is clearly dwindling and malcontent rising. As I mentioned early on in the series, a great part of both Superman’s and Wonder Woman’s mythos relied upon us accepting to otherworldly strangers into our midst in roles of great power. Up until this point, their vision has aligned with ours. Not so, anymore. The Flash is the perfect character for this issue for a couple of reasons. Barry Allen is, traditionally, a rational, critical thinker. Whereas some heroes in this series appear to be listening to their emotions and willfully blinding themselves to the truth, Flash is able to step back and analyze the situation. In this respect, he is the perfect ally to Batman — where Superman has the slightly more rash
Wonder Woman to goad him on, Flash may be able to humanize and soften Batman’s cold, public demeanor. The turning point comes when a genetically altered young man attempts to stand up to Wonder Woman and Superman (yes, he looks similar to Iron Man). The result is woefully predictable and surprisingly graphic, but it is one of the most effective panels in the series. Flash admits he could have stepped in to save this man at any point and yet he doesn’t. The look of horror on his face as he watches suggests a break somewhere in his mental process. As my fellow esteemed comic nerd, Larry Frum, said, “Flash thinks faster than anyone else. If he slows down, you know something is important.”

Since the moment Superman first flew to Bialya, every move and action from all of the Justice League has felt like that of a train whose brakes have gone out. As they quickly gain momentum, it seems Batman has been the only hero to see the inevitable conclusion (well, Aquaman, too, to an extent). As Flash says in the end, “I slowed down. I noticed.” “Injustice: Gods Among Us #13″ may be my new favorite of the “breather” issues. It works both as a character study, and as an effective mirror to the world at large. There is something truly sad about Flash’s inner monologue which both humanizes

Chop, chop
There was this little guy sitting in a bar, drinking his beer, minding his own business when all of a sudden this great big dude comes in and — WHACK!! — knocks him off the bar stool and onto the floor. The big dude says, “That was a karate chop from Korea.” The little guy thinks “GEEZ,” but he gets back up on the stool and starts drinking again when all of a sudden — WHACK!! — the big dude knocks him down AGAIN and says, “That was a judo chop from Japan.” So the little guy has had enough of this... He gets up, brushes himself off and quietly leaves. The little guy is gone for an hour or so when he returned. Without saying a word, he walks up behind the big dude and — WHAM!!!” — knocks the big dude off his stool, knocking him out cold!!! The little guy looks at the bartender and says, “When he gets up, tell him that’s a crowbar from Sears.”

Cannibals capture three men. The men are told that they will be skinned and eaten and then their skin will be used to make canoes. Then they are each given a final request. The first man asks to be killed as quickly and painlessly as possible. His request is granted, and they poison him. The second man asks for paper and a pen so that he can write a farewell letter to his family. This request is granted, and after he writes his letter, they kill him saving his skin for their canoes. Now it is the third man’s turn. He asks for a fork. The cannibals are confused, but it is his final request, so they give him a fork. Reverse psychology
A very shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the other end. After an hour of gathering up his courage he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, “Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?” To which she responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t sleep with you tonight!” By now, the entire bar is staring at them. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologizes. She smiles at him and says, “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I’m a graduate student in psychology and I’m studying how people respond to embarrassing situations.” To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, “What do you mean $200!”
Say ‘cheese’
My brother Sean stopped by a sandwich shop one afternoon and placed his order with the girl at the counter. She rattled off a list of condiments, but he stopped her when she asked if he wanted white cheese or yellow. “What’s the difference?” Sean asked. “Hello?” replied the girl, sighing and rolling her eyes. “The COLOR is different!”
SUDOKU The rules to play Sudoku are quite simple. Fill in the blanks so that each row, each column, and each of the nine 3x3 grids contain one instance of each of the numbers 1 through 9.
