Afghan farmers stand together against drug production in northern Marjah By Lance Cpl. Andrew Johnston, Regimental Combat Team 7
MARJAH, Afghanistan – Afghans declared an end to drug production in northern Marjah during an anti-drug summit at Forward Operating Base Sheri Wali, Marjah, Afghanistan, Sept. 5. Afghanistan officials said the event will go down in Afghan history as one of the largest groups of people to gather to tackle issues brought on by the illicit drug trade. Hours before the event, Afghan men, women and children throughout northern Marjah gathered outside the base’s front gate for the historic turning point that ultimately unified a plan for all farmers to give up the growth of illicit plants like opium in the area. According to the U.S. Department of State, an estimated 85 percent of Afghans are dependent on agriculture and related agribusinesses for their livelihoods. Unfortunately, for farmers in Afghanistan, their agricultural growth selection is heavily influenced by the Taliban, where they practically force them to grow illicit crops.
‘Four lenses’

CAMP HANSEN, OKINAWA, Japan — The Personal Services Centers of Okinawa offer a Four Lenses & Temperament Intelligence workshop to help attendees “discover the differences in perception and perspective amongst four distinct personality types and learn to understand, accept and value your unique strengths, as well as those of your coworkers/peers,” as advertised in a Marine and Family Services flyer on the Marine Corps Community Services website. According to Arianne Parton, Family Programs and Readiness Training & Outreach Specialist, Marine Corps Community Services Personal Services Center, participants learn to understand and value the unique strengths of each of the four lenses. The lenses are divided by colors based on what values are most important to the people of that lens, said Candace Cole, training and outreach specialist, MCCS PSC. The blue lens is focused on
relationships, green on competency, orange on freedom and gold on structure and organization, she added. “Most importantly, they will discover how they can leverage these strengths to their advantage in both their work and personal relationships,” she added. “The four lenses portion of the workshop introduces participants to the four distinct personality types,” Parton commented. “Participants gain an understanding of the four personality types, or ‘lenses’, through group activities and discussion.” “Temperament Intelligence activities can be tailored to build a variety of skills such as communication, leadership and conflict management,” she added. The Personal Services Center focuses on delivering this course to Marines and sailors, or agencies comprised primarily of Department of Defense civilians, looking to increase or improve their leadership abilities and communication skills. “This workshop has applications in all aspects of life and is appropriate and recommended for anyone looking to increase their understanding of other people’s perspectives,” Parton commented. The goal of the workshop is to leave participants with an understanding of the unique perspectives of each personality type and where potential conflicts can arise between different “lenses” in both their personal and professional lives.

What a fantastic article on “The Nazi Connection...” This is an article worthy of the New York Times. Joel San Diego I think there is a more in-depth article in a recent New Yorker magazine.
I don’t feel like I am prejudiced against anyone, but how can we add all the logistical additions it will take to have an openly gay Marine Corps? Will we have to have four bathrooms, four sleeping buildings, four different types of considerations for testing, physically and mentally? I am not for the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, but I would propose a different military division altogether for gay and lesbians.

HELP NEEDED to fund 90,000 ‘Stop-Loss’ Vets due money Let’s go on a scavenger hunt! The object is to find one (or more) of 89,836 service members, many of them now veterans, who were forced to stay on active duty under “stop loss” orders, for days or months beyond projected separation or retirement dates, sometime from Sept. 11, 2001, to Sept. 30, 2009. They might be a family member, a friend, a fellow employee, or your mailman. But if you find one before Oct. 21 the prize will be their gratitude because the government is ready to pay them, on average, $3500. The precise payment formula is $500 for every month or partial month they were kept on active duty involuntarily after 9/11 to ensure force readiness during some difficult times for the nation and their service. Hint: Only the Army used “stop loss” authority beyond 2003. Indeed, it still uses stop-loss to keep some soldiers beyond their period of obligated service. Current stop-loss pay comes from a different pot, and use of stoploss even by the Army is sent to end by next March. Congress ordered the Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay program established last fall but it allowed only a one-year window for eligible veterans and service members to claim their payments. With six weeks remaining, 38 percent have done so. That leaves
$320 million on the table, and the likelihood a lot of it will be returned to the U.S. Treasury or spent on lesser priorities, if deserving veterans aren’t told about the cash by Oct. 21. Lernes “Bear” Hebert, acting director of officer and enlisted personnel management for the Department of Defense, said 55,000 retroactive stop loss claims have been processed to date and $212 million paid out. “This payment is for services already rendered. It has no strings attached,” said Hebert. Those who believe they might be eligible can get full details and fill out an application online at: www. defense.gov/stoploss. Completing the application isn’t difficult, Hebert said. If an applicant doesn’t have all the supporting documents needed to complete the form, he or she should file it anyway by Oct. 21 and allow program staff to help them complete it later. “A professional counselor with that member’s service will contact them and answer any other documentation questions they might have. They can either be contacted by e-mail or by phone, depending on the contact information provided with the application,” Hebert explained. Retroactive stop loss pay might not even be taxable if it was earned while the member was serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or another designated Combat Zone Tax Exclusion area. That would be verified by Defense Finance and Accounting Service, said Hebert. Some members while in stop loss
status changed their minds about leaving and reenlisted. If they did, or were paid bonus money, they will only be eligible for the $500 for months or partial months of stop loss before electing to reenlist. If not sure money is due, file a claim by the deadline. All four DoD branches of service used stop-loss orders after 9/11. The Navy used it sparingly, on only 250 sailors. Of those, only 33 have filed claims so far. The Marine Corps’ pool of eligible veterans or current service members is 8,892, yet only 3040 have applied for payment. The Air Force has processed 3500 claims out of 16,000 eligible. The Army has processed more than 49,000 claims out of an eligible population of 120,267. All the services are reaching out to

That’s a group we really want to remind strongly that October 21st is not that far away.” Eligible members or vets will be kicking themselves if they wait until

The Army has conducted several direct mailings to try to reach former and retired soldiers, even chasing down addresses changes or contacting next of kin, when possible, to ensure the word gets out.
Oct. 22 to mail an application or hit “send” on an online application. By law, applications sent past the deadline can’t be paid. The good news is “it really is a very simple process,” said Hebert. “It requires minimal investment – a half hour – and yields an average pay back of over $3500. That’s a pretty good return.” From last October on the first to file were service members still on active duty or those who had been kept on active duty for many months. Since then, the average payment has gotten smaller with slower applicants, on average, having served less time in stop loss status. “We’re still trying to get out there to the farms, factories and the schools to get word to those individuals who perhaps have not stayed in contact with the department over the years,” Hebert said. “Many members have family out there who might hear about this or might read your article. We are asking them to tell a friend,” said Hebert. “Reach out to those families that they know served between 9/11 and Sept. 30, 2009, and not assume they have heard about this program. Being responsible for getting them no-strings-attached money is being a pretty good friend.” Readers who succeed at this “scavenger hunt” are encouraged to share with us how the good news reached a veteran or how the “found” money will be spent, a belated gift for having served longer than planned. Changes to selective reenlistment bonus (SRB) award levels were announced in NAVADMIN 300/10 for active duty and Reserve full-time support Sailors, which are scheduled to take effect Oct. 1. Approximately 17,000 Sailors working in 135 critical skills will be eligible to reenlist with SRB awards up to $90,000 in 2011. “While the SRB program continues to be the Navy’s primary monetary incentive to encourage Sailors with critical skills and valuable experience
to stay Navy, it is incumbent upon the Navy to remain within congressionally authorized funding limits,” said Rear Adm. Tony Kurta, director of personnel plans and policy. SRB is also a force shaping tool to better manage critical skill retention goals. “As reenlistment goals for particular skills are achieved, SRB award levels for those skills will be removed from the plan,” said Kurta. The key for Sailors is to reenlist early to take advantage of the SRB as soon as eligibility requirements are met. Enlisted ratings selected for SRB have been placed in one of three tiers. Varying award levels and early reenlistment opportunities have been provided for each tier. Sailors may request to reenlist early for an SRB, as long as their end of active obligated service is within the current fiscal year and is not later than 90 days from the requested date of reenlistment. Sailors serving in tier one skills may reenlist any time within the fiscal year their enlistment contract ends. Sailors receiving early promote in their most recent periodic evaluation report and Sailors with nuclear skills are given greater reenlistment flexibility. “With the policy changes, it is critical that Navy counselors and command leaders read and understand the governing instructions and NAVADMINs,” said Kurta. “The required paperwork must be completed correctly and in a timely manner to be processed so Sailors can take advantage of the bonus.” To read the complete NAVADMIN, visit www.npc.navy.mil. Raising the Bar on Physical Readiness Requirements Like all Navy commands, Naval Support Activity Bethesda is gearing up for the fall Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA), running Sept. 27 to Nov. 5, and reminding Sailors of the recent changes to readiness requirements. For this year’s PFA as in the past, the assessment includes physical readiness testing and body composition assessment, with Sailors having the option of completing a 1.5-mile run, a 500-yard swim, or a 12-minute fixed-time test on the elliptical trainer
or stationary bike, burning as many calories as possible on either machine. Sailors must also do a set number of push-ups and sit-ups, depending on their age and gender. As of Jan. 1, 2011, the requirements for Sailors who opt to take the bike test must use a more vigorous calorie conversion equation, equating the activity to a 1.5-mile run, according to NAVADMIN 256/10 announced Aug. 10.
Also making requirements more stringent, according to NAVADMIN 073/09, as of March 2009, active-duty Sailors who have had three or more PFA failures in the last four years may not re-enlist, transfer or extend their service without a waiver from the Navy Personnel Command. “If anyone has three failures in a fouryear period, they run the risk of being administratively separated,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Leonardo Carbonel, head of National Naval Medical Center’s PFA Office. Sailors who have failed once or twice are also ineligible for promotion, advancement or frocking. It was a time of change when women got the vote, broadcast radio began and young people ruled the world. Along with his brother Elias (Shea Whigham), the town’s sheriff, and a crew of ward bosses and local thugs, Nucky carved out a niche for himself as the man to see for any illegal alcohol. 2010 Audi R8 sports V-10 engine, creates instant happiness
When I say that driving this car was instant happiness, I’m not kidding. It was actually a kind of reflex action. It went something like this: Enter winding on ramp, hit the gas, hear the finely tuned exhaust note, zoom past every other car on the road. And insert instantaneous smile. Every time. The steering was incredibly responsive with the slightest turn of the wheel creating lane changes and turns. And a little pressure to the gas pedal went a long, long way. Plus the quattro all-wheel drive system combined with the Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system had this car sticking to the road like glue on even the most curvaceous roads. While the R8 was phenomenal on open roads (thank goodness for a 70 mph speed limit on I-65 in Indiana that allowed me to fudge a little with the speeding), you will feel every bump in the road. But I’d take that any day for a little slice of heaven. The test car with the V-10 engine had a
“Whoa! Is that the Iron Man car?” I help teach young kids how to run, and when I pulled up to practice during the test week in the 2010 Audi R8, that was the first question they asked. Even at their tender age they knew this car was something special. And they didn’t even know anything about the 525-horsepower, V-10 engine under the hood … or in the trunk as the case may be. I don’t even know where to begin with this review other than to echo my young friends: Whoa! Everything about the test car was something to love. From the shiny Brilliant Red paint to the optional Carbon Fiber Sigma exterior package ($8,100) to the sublime 6-speed manual transmission that was the key to heartthumping joy. I couldn’t drive this car enough. So, I took my sister to and from work every day. And I met some friends for lunch out in the suburbs. And then I took a road trip from Chicago to Indianapolis. And I could have kept on going. Except for the whole I-had-to-fill-up-the-tank-3-times thing. Then again, people who are going to spend $170K on a car, probably don’t really care that there is a $3,000 gas-guzzler tax or that city/highway fuel economy is 12/20 mpg. So, back to the car. In addition to the suave and swoopy exterior lines and the gorgeous glass rear window exposing 10 cylinders of happiness, the extra carbon fiber optional inserts (totaling $15,350) added finesse to the overall good looks of the eye-catching R8. A particular exterior favorite of mine were the mean, squinty headlights with the individual LED bulbs surrounding the larger lamp. A serious downer, however, comes in those states like Illinois that require you to have a front license plate. Adding that cheap tin rectangle mars the entire front lines of the car. Thus, I think exceptions to the law should be made for the R8. Failing that, if I had the money to buy the car, I think I’d just incur the fine if anyone could catch me to ticket me. Dropping into the driver’s seat is another joy waiting to happen—even before turning the key in the ignition. The cockpit is a visual delight with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and metal casing surrounding the 6-speed manual transmission. I loved the looks of the ridged metal on the gear shift, but if you ever happen to leave the R8 parked in the sun: OUCH! The interior optional carbon fiber inserts add to the overall cockpit feel of the cabin, and in fact, they surround the driver’s seat, isolating and encapsulating. All gauges and controls are within immediate and easy reach, and it’s almost as though you merely have to think about adjusting something for it to happen. The heavily bolstered seats ensconce you immediately, and though I was too thin to be surrounded by them, they provided me nice support during the long drive to and from Indy. OK, I’m going to digress into a girly moment and my only minor complaint that probably doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Most of the time I drove this car, I was wearing running shoes or flat-soled sandals. But the one day I wore 3-inch heels, I had a small problem. I needed to move the seat back to accommodate the extra length and comfortably reach the gas and brake pedals. But in moving the seat back, I could no longer push the clutch all the way in. That’s it. The shoes came off, and I went back to driving in blissful glee. The raw power included with the 5.2-liter FSI V-10 engine is both awesome and elegant. It has nice road manners in traffic, but it’s also ready to roar—and leave—the world in the dust—with the slightest touch of the gas pedal.

base price of $146,000 and it had pretty much everything you could possibly want in a car, including heated seats, automatic climate control, navigation, Sirius Satellite Radio, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and 19inch wheels. In addition to all the optional carbon fiber, the test car added the enhanced leather package ($3,500) and black Alcantara headliner ($1,300). I don’t know what else to say other than this is far and away one of the coolest cars I’ve ever tested. I would say “I’ll take two,” but I’d have to sell my condo just to get one. Then again, I am small. I could live in an R8.

With or without Vincent Jackson, the Chargers will win the West with ease. Philip Rivers looks poised to have another great year, and with the addition of power-runner Ryan Matthews, that spells trouble for opposing defenses. The defense is still potent and young, which means that as good as they are, they could be even better by the end of the year. Despite falling short of expectations for a few years in a row now, I think Norv Turner finally has an AFC champion-caliber team.
Team to Watch Kansas City Chiefs Ryan Mathews RB, SD Chargers
with a new, accomplished offensive coordinator and do the same on defense. Then add a league-leading RB from last year to compliment another 1,000-yard runner. Continue by adding an explosive slot receiver, and an NFL-ready defensive back. Finally, for good measure, bolster a young offensive line with two veteran linemen, and all of the sudden, you’re looking pretty good. Looking at the Chiefs’ record, I see no reason they couldn’t double their win total from last year, and at the very least, they’ll be exciting to watch. If Matt Cassel is good at all (and he hasn’t been through three preseason games), this team can be a contender in a weak division.

I know being the class of the NFC West doesn’t really mean much, but I think this is the year the 49ers finally win the division. It’s been a while since they’ve done so, and they’ve been close for a couple of years, but this year, they finally have all the pieces. They had a great draft, one that solidified the offensive-line and the defensive secondary, and that means great things for them moving forward. Frank Gore will gain yards almost at will with this o-line, and the defense is beginning to look formidable. Teams that score a lot of points and don’t give very many generally win a lot of games. In the N F C
West, they’ll win 10 or more.

Team to WatchSeatlleSeahawks To be honest, the St. Louis Rams made sense here too, but only because they’ll quadruple their win total from last year if Sam Bradford leads them to 4 wins. But for being a team that only needs to improve their record from last year by a few games to be in the playoff hunt, and having the best draft that any team has had in a long time, they just make more sense. Pete Carroll is annoying, and his ability to win within the rules may be questionable at best, but he always seems to win, and with a club with this much young talent, he’ll continue to enjoy success. HEISMAN CONTENDERS AND PRETENDERS Contenders Mark Ingram As much fun as elite QBs are to watch, the Heisman isn’t about being flashy, it’s about being the best. As the 2009 winner of the award, and given the fact that he’s playing on a team with a great offensive line and a passing game talented enough to force defenses to keep more players out of the box, Ingram makes the most sense as the frontrunner, and is inarguably a contender. He had 1,992 total yards on 6.7 yards-per-touch and scored 20 total touchdowns last year. Don’t be surprised if he at least matches those number in 2010.
Terrelle Pryor The odds-makers have picked Pryor as the favorite to win the award this year, and if the guy who won it last year wasn’t back for another year, I would agree with them. Pryor’s numbers may have not matched expectations thus far, but in his last two bigtime games in 2009, he shined, with 3 touchdowns in a 24-7 win at
Penn State, and 338 total yards and 2 touchdowns in a 26-17 Rose Bowl win against Oregon. His athleticism and natural leadership skills will take him, and the Buckeyes, far this year — just not far enough.
Jake Locker How important was Locker to Washington’s success? In the Huskies’ 7 losses in 2009, he scored 12 touchdowns and threw 9 interceptions. In 5 wins, he scored 16 touchdowns and threw 2 interceptions. It stands to reason, then, that Locker has already proven he’s one of the most valuable players in the nation. The only question is if he can put up eye-catching numbers for an entire season. With Steve Sarkisian as his coach, and another year of experience playing elite Pac-10 teams, I think he’ll finally put up those numbers and enter into late-season Heisman discussion.
Pretenders Ryan Mallett I realize that Mallett’s numbers rank at or near the top of the nation, but as was previously mentioned, flashy numbers don’t make the case for the Heisman as well as being the best — and Ryan Mallett is far from the best. Why, you ask? How about the fact that in his team’s 5 losses in 2009, he actually scored 9 touchdowns to only 2 interceptions, which is actually a better ratio of TDs-to-turnovers than what he had in the Razorbacks’ wins (20-to-5). It stands to reason that if he was the driving force behind the offense, his solid numbers would have translated to wins. Or take the fact that in
his team’s toughest games (against Alabama, Florida, and LSU), he completed only 41% of his passes and scored only 1 TD in each. Mallett is not very valuable, not very clutch, and not a contender.
Matt Barkley In games against top-25 teams, Barkley threw 5 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. As pathetic as those numbers are for a supposed Heisman contender, they may not be the worst, at least given that in the rest of his games, those against teams outside the top 25, his ratio of TDs-to-picks was an utterly mediocre 10-to-7. There’s not really much else to say. He simply hasn’t done anything to make me think he can contend for Heisman, no matter how much press he gets.

WORST PENNANT RACE COLLAPSES
countdown of the worst blown leads in baseball history
One of the ways that baseball is unique is the 162-game season. Even the worst teams go on winning streaks and the best go on losing streaks. And because teams essentially play every day, the standings can change rapidly during the pennant race. An NBA or NFL team can’t erase a five-game deficit in a week. These teams learned the hard way that no lead is absolutely safe.

9. 1962 Los Angeles Dodgers Eleven years after the Giants caught the Dodgers, it happened again. This time the Dodgers blew a fourgame lead in the final seven games as they lost 10 of their final 13 and the last four games, then lost in a best-of-three playoffs when a burned-out bullpen blew a 4-2 lead after seven innings in the deciding game. Don Drysdale had won 25 games that season and was available, but manager Walter Alston tried to save him for a World Series Game 1 that never happened.

8. 1969 Chicago Cubs Another historic moment - the 1969 Amazin’ Mets likely wouldn’t have happened if the Cubs hadn’t helped out. It was the first season of divisional play, and the Cubs had a 9.5-game lead on August 14 in the new National League East. But 13 days later the red-hot Mets had pulled within two, and they won the division by eight. The Cubs lost 14 of their final 20, and New York went on to win the World Series.

7. 1987 Toronto Blue Jays With seven games to play, the Blue Jays were 96-59 and had a 3.5-game lead. On the second-to-last Sunday, the Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning against the Tigers, but Kirk Gibson’s home run tied the game, and Detroit won in 13 innings. The Blue Jays didn’t win again. They finished 96-66, and the Tigers caught them with a sweep in the final weekend, winning three one-run games: 4-3, 3-2 and 1-0. Toronto finished the season two games behind.

The guy reaches into his coat again and pulls out a frog. He puts the frog on the bar, and the frog starts to sing. He has a marvelous voice and great pitch, a fine singer. A stranger from the other end of the bar runs over to the guy and offers him $300 for the frog. The guy says “It’s a deal.” He takes the three hundred and gives the frog to the stranger, who runs out of the bar with it. The bartender says to the guy, “Are you some kind of nut?! You sold a singing frog for $300? It must have been worth millions. You must be crazy!” “Not so,” says the guy. “The hamster is also a ventriloquist!”

JAKE GAGNE WINS RED BULL MOTOGP ROOKIES CUP AT MISANO
American Jake Gagne won the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Misano on Saturday. The 17 year-old Californian charged on the last lap to earn second place in the season’s final race and assure ownership of the 2010 season title. Gagne, winner of four Rookies Cup races this season, started the final lap in fourth place while his only remaining title challenger Danny Kent led the race. Knowing that particular ending would have resulted in Kent winning the championship, Jake rocketed up two positions to clinch his title. The race saw as many as a halfdozen riders going for the lead in the late going. Jake was a factor near the front for the entire contest, even though he could only qualify in tenth place due
to machine difficulties. “Friday didn’t go to plan,” said Jake after becoming the series champion. “Practice was good but we lost a crankshaft. It couldn’t be fixed in time so I had to go out on the spare bike. It isn’t the same, so the best I could do was tenth place. I was still confident for the race because I liked how my bike was working.” Gagne, who won from deep in the field in the second Czech Republic race, was set on improving his starting position. Gagne led the championship by 11 points going into the race. He knew before the race that a third place finish or better would guarantee his crown. “I got a good start and I was in the top five by the end of the first lap,” said the Ramona, California resident. “I knew I didn’t need to win but I needed to ride a smart race. Danny Kent needed to win and have me find some trouble.” After a wild race that saw plenty of passing and shuffling at the front, Gagne found himself in fourth place on the last lap. Jake gained the needed spots to become Red Bull Rookies Cup champion as he moved into second place, just behind Kent. He set the fast lap of the race on the final time around the Misano circuit. “My plan was to stick to the back of the lead group until the end. I wasn’t really worried about how the race was going. I knew I could outbrake the guys but I didn’t want to set myself up to get stuffed,” said Jake. “I didn’t want to make the passes until the right time. I got up into second with a few corners to go and that was it.” Jake’s final tally in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup was 170 points, six ahead of Kent. The talented teen was excited after wining his first roadracing championship in just his third season on the pavement after a stellar career in youth motocross.

Kidnapping & Extortion in Brazil Opening in theatres this week is a disturbing documentary from director/writer Jorge W. Atalla, Paradigm Pictures with MidMax Entertainment bringing “Sequestro”. This film tells the story of a film crew who go on a four-year journey into a disturbing trend in Sao Paulo and Brazil itself – kidnapping. The crew follows the Ibiapina family as their father, Jose, has been taken for ransom. What is going on in this country? Quite simply the history is this: the writer sites the end of the Cold War that stopped funds from reaching the Leftist movements. Cuba assembled a group called ‘Departmento America’ that was committed to kidnapping as a way of financing Latin American guerilla activities. Somewhere along the way it has become a past time. From four kidnappings in 1986, the numbers has reached over 400 people in Sao Paulo (1,500 in Brazil) with an intake of $7.7 million dollars in the last ten years. Now, in Sao Paulo, there is an Anti-kidnapping Police Division
whose only job is to recover those who have been taken – women, men, the elderly and even children – no one is safe when money is the motive. These police work with the Ibiapina family to track down their father before time runs out. This is a look at what is real – and those affected by it. FINAL WORD: This is a very emotional documentary. The viewer is taken on a roller coast ride of history through the birth of this crime and what is has grown to today. Once a way for ‘revolutionaries’ to make their point, even they (from behind prison walls) believe these kidnappings are a violent act and merely extortion. Ironic isn’t it? As the police trace one suspect after another, those who have been abducted tell their stories with heart, with courage and an amazing amount of strength. They bravely recount their capture and, in some cases, violent treatment at the hands of their captors. Even more emotional is their telling of their lives today and the fears that it will happen to them again. In the midst of the sadness
there are moments of pure joy as the police, and cameras, are there to record the moments of success as families are reunited. Working in the division also has a strong impact on those officers who work within it. As in the case of the Ibiapina family, the police become close to the families and share in their pain and agony, which takes a toll on their own personal lives. In the Anti-kidnapping Police Division, finding them alive is their goal, bringing down the criminals their purpose, reuniting with their families is their reward! TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Sequestro” three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. This is a documentary filled with so many emotions! There is surprise that this is not given the press in the world news spotlight. Add to that mix rage, helplessness and confusion that one human being would do this to another. Watching the events unfold, from the harassing and mentally exhausting telephone calls of the extortionists to the blatant
disregard for humanity, can only be called riveting. The abducted living conditions, as well as the sometimeslengthy periods of silence, are hard to comprehend yet those that survived show us all the will to live. From captive time periods up to 70 days, it’s a race against time and money. In the end - some things can only change when given the light of day with the voices and courage of those who have survived.

Centurion Opening in theatres this Friday from director/writer Neil Marshall come the battle for survival with Magnet Studio’s sword wielding tale of “Centurion”. This film tells the story of Britain in A.D. and Centurion Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender), a Roman soldier who is captured by their enemies the Picts and taken to their leader Gorlacon (Ulrich Thomsen). In another camp, General Titus Flavius Virilus (Dominic West) has been ordered by Governor Julius Agricola (Paul Freeman) to do whatever is necessary to wipe out the Picts. To further help their cause, the Governor gives him Etain (Olga Kurylenko), a Pictish tracker who will help them find their target. At the Pict camp, Dias manages to escape and is on the run. Being chased down by Pict warriors, Virilus and the Ninth Legion take them down and rescue Dias. Back among his own Dias tells them what has happened and about the Pict warriors. As they make their way further into Gorlacon’s territory, the Ninth Legion is ambushed, Virilus captured and all but a few men led but Dias survive. It is Virilus who tells the Centurion to take what is left of his men and “get them home”. Following his order Dias begins the trek – he and the men Vortix (Dave Legeno), Aeron (Axelle Carolyn), Thax (JJ Feild), Septus (Lee Ross), Liam Cunningham as Brick, Bothos (David Morrissey), Macros (Noel Clarke), Leonidas (Dimitri Leonidas) and Tarak the cook (Riz Ahmed) run for home. The vengeful Etain whose orders are to bring back the heads of the Romans constantly hunts them. It is a race for life. FINAL WORD: Fassbender has always been a favorite of mine. There is something elegant and simple about this actor outwardly but I know it goes much deeper. This role calls for a lot physically and Fassbender delivers. He has made his mark in television overseas. His next project is “X-Men: First Class” which is in preproduction. West as Flavius was well done and if the face seems somewhat familiar to you, perhaps you’ll recall him in a little film called “300”. In that role he played Theron, the man who sold out to Xerxes. Here he is reunited with Fassbender

(another “300” co-star) as Romans both fighting for survival. Thomsen as Gorlacon has a short but to the point role. He is a man leading his people and nothing or no one will stop him. The cast of soldiers worked well together and it makes watching a group easier when the characters flow together which these did. The standout here is Kurylenko as Etain. The woman does not have to say a word – it is all in her eyes and in her deliberateness. As a Pict tracker nothing got past this woman and her rage fueled everything she did – it was awesome. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Centurion” three and a half tubs of popcorn. There is definitely graphic violence in the film and some colorful language but nothing fans of this genre of film haven’t seen before. It was beautifully filmed and the scenery is fantastic. My only complaint, if you want to even call it that, was the ending. The story was working toward something and then kind of just – well – fell down! Everything else in the film wasn’t as predictable as the ending and many in the theatre said it out loud. So either one of two things are going to happen. One, there will be a sequel for reasons I will not tell you (see the film silly!) or two, it just ran out of steam before hitting the home stretch. I’d like to think the door is open instead of closed. That being said it’s a remarkable throwback to the Roman/gladiator films but with really cool effects. It is entertaining and filled with all the swordplay you’d come to expect. Don’t over analyze – just enjoy – and leave your pig poles at home! In the end – fight or die!

METAL + MOTOCROSS + MAYHEM = RED BULL METALLICROSS Melting Pot of Motocross to Feature Post-Apocalyptic “dream track” designed by James Stewart, Travis Pastrana, Ronnie Renner, David Knight and Geoff Aaron This October, the stars will align to create one of most unique and challenging tracks motocross has ever seen. Five of the world’s best motocross athletes will come together to design and build a “dream track” blending several two-wheel off-road disciplines. The athletes - James Stewart, Travis Pastrana, Ronnie Renner, David Knight and Geoff Aaron - will bring to life a track that unites design elements from supercross, motocross, endurocross, freestyle and trials. Each of the five
riders will contribute a portion to the total design, and the result will be a mash-up of everything they’ve always wanted to put into a race track, but were never allowed to do. This motocross melting pot will be known as Red Bull Metallicross, and will be held at the venerable Pala Raceway on Saturday, October 23. With some of the best talent in motocross serving as designers, the track will definitely be revolutionary, but it will also have a theme to bump the excitement up a few more notches. As Red Bull Metallicross implies, it will not only feature top-level motocross action, but “metal” music as well. Rock and metal bands will perform on the track in-between each round of racing, and the event will culminate with a special performance by a top heavy metal group. Red Bull Metallicross is open to pros and amateurs alike, but the track will not be for the faint of heart. The track will be as unforgiving as it will be revolutionary, and will feature: a nearly two story drop into the first turn; a 12-foot-high stepup; dirt-to-concrete whoops; a creek crossing; stretches of sand; a stair set made of railroad ties; explosions and geysers of flame. The racing format will also add some new wrinkles and twists to traditional racing. There will be several heat races, a last chance qualifier and wildcard elements that will keep the fans riveted to the action
on the track and give every rider a true chance to prove themselves. “Metallicross is going to be the raddest event ever. I’m pumped to be a part of something so revolutionary to the sport,” said Renner. “We have a chance to help design our own real life video game…this event is going to be all-time!” Aspiring racers will have the chance to earn a spot in the main event during one of two regional qualifier events. The top 10 riders from each qualifier will move on and pit themselves against some of the best professionals in the world at the Red Bull Metallicross main event. Qualifiers will take place at the following locations: September 25: E-Street MX, Riverfront Track, Sacramento, Calif. October 2:Pala Raceway, Pala, Calif. “Pala Raceway is honored to host Red Bull Metallicross, as we know from previous events how far Red Bull pushes the envelope,” said Ryan Ouellette, president MXMPI/Pala Raceway. “While we are in the middle of getting ready for the Pala National, we can hardly wait to begin construction on the course and progress the sport.”

The members of 4TROOPS are: Former Cpt. Meredith Melcher, Former Sgt. Daniel Jens, Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Ron Henry and Former Sgt. David Clemo. Melcher, 29, is the daughter of a retired three-star General. She served as a platoon leader on the front lines in Iraq where she led her troops in the successful ambulance evacuations of hundreds of wounded Americans and Iraqis. Jens, 36, served in Iraq and was most recently stationed at Fort Hood. He joined the Army after the events of 9/11. Jens was one of the finalists on “America’s Got Talent.” He was released from the Army at the end of January. Henry, 41, served in the Army for 20 years. He was a transport manager in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division, and also the leader of an Army singing group “Transportation Express.” Clemo, 30, served on the front lines in Afghanistan providing communications and logistics support for the 18th Airborne Corps. He and Melcher toured together in 2004 with the Army Soldier Show. Sony MASTERWORKS recently released 4TROOPS first album, by the same name. Volunteer Pilot reunites wounded warrior with family Thanks to the Veterans Airlift Command and its volunteer pilots from across the country, wounded military personnel, who by themselves could not travel long distances on their own, are able to be airlifted for medical care or to reunite with family. One of the latest veterans to take advantage of this program was Christian Tolentino, an Army private first class, who was recently injured in Afghanistan on July 5th when he was hit with an IED. With both legs injured in the blast, Christian has already under gone 3 surgeries to extract shrapnel. Christian’s older brother Johnny, a strong supporter, has been
at his brother’s side during the recover process at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. With a four day pass in hand and the Labor Day Holiday weekend approaching, Christian and Johnny wanted to visit their Mom & Dad in Yonkers, NY, but at this point in his recovery a cramped 5 hour car or bus trip for Christian was not the preferred mode of transportation. Thanks to two volunteer pilots with the Veterans Airlift Command the brothers received free, round trip plane rides from Washington, DC to Yonkers, NY to visit their family. will highlight a different type of machine as 250 prestigious historic racecars gather for the 13th Annual Coronado Speed Festival. Known as the “Race at the Base,” the Coronado Speed Festival features nine different race groups divided according to make, age and horsepower. The cars race at high speeds on a spectator-friendly 1.7-mile course constructed in mere days on the runways and taxiways of the military base. This year’s marque will celebrate the rich race heritage of Shelby American cars, from the legendary Cobra and the Daytona Coupe to the GT40 and GT350. MACHETE Now playing in theatres from director Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis is an action adventure with a twist in Troublemaker Studios showing of “Machete” This film tells the story of Federale Agent Machete (Danny Trejo), who has been set up by drug lord Torrez (Steven Seagal) and sees his wife murdered. Disappearing for years later, he is a day laborer in the streets of Texas. One day he is approached by Booth (Jeff Fahey) and asked to assassinate Senator McLaughlin (Robert DeNiro), a man who is against immigration. Not only does Machete need to take care of them, but border vigilante Von (Don Johnson) as well. Attempting to also rid themselves of problems is a group called The Network run in secret by Luz, also known as SHE’ the revolutionary, (Michelle Rodriguez). Suspecting her and trying to get to the bottom of things is Immigration Officer Sartana Rivera (Jessica Alba). Machete trusts no one after the assassination plot fails and he returns to the church to get help from his brother the Padre (Cheech Marin). But Booth hires his own assassin to take out Machete before the truth of what’s going on is revealed. Everyone involved with Machete bans together to do what is right. When a man has nothing to lose – prepare to fight! FINAL WORD: Trejo was the perfect person to play this role. His rugged looks and silent rage make the film. While everyone else is spouting words, Machete springs into action. Trejo is finally getting a chance
to play the good guy action hero instead of the bad guy he is more famously known for. At 66 he has joined the rank and file year of the “older” action hero and rightfully so. Rodriguez is a total badass and top girl in the film. She is physically fit, ripped, intelligent and just happens to run a roach coach. Alba is another lady with a gun but in very spiked heels who falls for Machete. Her speeches are heartfelt and hysterical all at the same time. DeNiro, what can you say about DeNiro? He plays this role straightforward and, whether intentional or not, like a true cowardly weasel and it works beautifully. Johnson’s role is small but amusing and nice to see him and former “Nash Bridges” co-star in the same film. Marin is once again a priest – I think he is just liking the ‘uniform’ – but has no problem grabbing a loaded weapon to help out his brother. I know everyone is waiting for me to say something about Lohan’s performance but I chose not to, see if for yourself and decide. Other cast include: Lindsay Lohan as April, Cheryl Chin as the Torrez Henchwoman, Daryl Sabara as Julio, Gilbert Trejo as
Jorge, Ara Celi as the Reporter and Tom Savini as Osiris Ampanpour. What many may not know is that the film is based on a fake trailer Rodriguez inserted into his movie “Grindhouse” and “Planet Terror” in 2007. Trejo, Fahey and Marin who were in the trailer are reprising their roles in this film. Both of those films were co produced by Quentin Tarantino and is a producer on “Machete”. Rodriguez wrote this script after he finished the 1995 “Desperado” which is another action hero with a cause film that lit up the box office. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Machete” four tubs of popcorn out of five. This film is definitely rated R for its bloody violence, language, nudity and content but in the midst of all that is hilarity. This could be compared to any B-movie you’ve ever seen yet loved, except better. The camp is there with humor all mixed together for a thrill ride. It is filled with puns about Mexicans, political messages washed in mire and none of it is to be taken seriously in any way, shape or form. I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy the film as much as I did (not a Seagal fan in the slightest). It is quite the change to watch an action film, applaud, yell, laugh, and laugh some more! So hit the theatres and have a great time.

(Comedy, PG, 90 minutes). Juli (Madeline Carroll) has adored Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) ever since he moved into the neighborhood in the second grade. Bryce has been running away from her ever since. Now they’re 14 and they seem to be flipping: he more interested, she less. Rob Reiner’s warm human comedy tells their stories by showing the same crucial events from both their points of view. He returns to the time of his “Stand by Me” with the same endearing insights. Rating: Three and a half stars. Chicago Heights
Mesrine II: Public Enemy No. 1 (Crime drama, R, 133 minutes). Continuation of the brutal life of France’s most notorious criminal, who survived a 20-year series of bank robberies, kidnappings, prison breaks and murders. Vincent Cassel makes him brutal, ugly, powerful and inscrutable. Winner of French Oscars for best director and actor. Rating: Three and a half stars. Around a Small Mountain (Comedy, not rated, 85 minutes). Jane Birkin is wonderful as a lonely woman returning to her father’s little circus after 15 years. Sergio Castellitto is a man who helps her with car trouble and ends up running away with the circus along with her. But this isn’t a romance; it’s more two ships comforting each other in the night. Jacques Rivette, one of the founders of the French New Wave, has made a small film because for this gentle story, that’s exactly the right size. Rating: Three stars.
(Drama, not rated, 90 minutes). A cinematic adaptation of Sherwood Anderson’s “Winesburg, Ohio,” moved to the present and recent decades and set in the far south Chicago suburb of Chicago Heights. Director Daniel Nearing uses a central character much like Anderson’s, who meditates on the lives he has observed in this AfricanAmerican community, and as he approaches death he recalls them in love and sadness. A remarkable job of evoking the essence of a book that is often considered not filmable. Rating: Three stars.
Mugabe and the White African (Documentary, not rated, 90 minutes). The story of Mike Campbell, a white farmer in Zimbabwe, who resists the efforts of the Mugabe regime to take over his farm, and eventually wins his case in an African regional high court. Dramatic, emotional, but raising some questions that go unanswered. Rating: Three stars.

He works for a man who might as well be a master. He uses few words. Only his feelings for a prostitute named Clara (Violante Placido) supply an opening to his emotions. Zen in its focus. Rating: Four stars
(Musical comedy, PG-13, 85 minutes). An Aboriginal musical based on a 1990 hit from the Australian stage. Set in a late hippie era and featuring production numbers with a dash of Bollywood, this good-hearted comedy features two leads who are sweet and attractive, and the movie skips along happily, if a little disorganzed. With Geoffrey Rush as the not very clerical head of a strange seminary. Rating: Two and a half stars.

“EAT, PRAY, LOVE” -- or as the movie revises Elizabeth Gilbert’s original book title --”Eat Pray Love,” without the commas. This is the hot book and Julia Roberts’ movie where the star of stars seeks to find herself. That’s all well and good and I bow to no one in admiration of my longtime friend Julia. But I am writing my own movie after a 10-day sojourn in the Tuscany and Liguria regions of Italy. My book-movie is called more simply -- “Eat Eat Eat” -- and there was no time for commas. Practically every civilized person I told I was going to Florence, screamed: “Are you crazy? It will be so hot, so crowded; so full of tourists, you’ll have two-hour waits in the sun to get into the Uffizi. August is not the time to go there!” But I’m from Texas and I don’t just wilt away when the sun shines. And in this case, everybody was wrong. Florence was moderately hot, but nothing compared to broiling sizzling New York City. And we always had beautiful breezes wafting down out of the hills that surround this great birthplace of the Renaissance. Every night as I ate on the balcony of the fabulous Villa San
Michele, I was not only serenaded by Cole Porter tunes on the piano but we had a beautiful full moon shining down on the Duomo, seen far, far away through the glorious umbrella pines. And every afternoon after touring in the morning with a terrific guide, I swam in a beautiful pool over green gardens and hedges and enjoyed the famous hotel itself, which is in a building with a design by none other than Michelangelo. I traveled on through Fiesole, Luca, Genoa and Portofino for more grand hoteling, cruising the Italian Riviera coast in a small speedboat, swimming in the Hotel Splendido’s big saltwater pool and absorbing the famous movie star photos on the walls while eating up and down and in and out, living from one meal to the next. No sooner had I wound up the Splendido’s extraordinary luncheon spaghetti vongole with the clams smothered in tomatoes and fiery hot sauce than I was thinking about the next sit down, flapping open my napkin and falling to. If imagination failed, good old spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and basil and/or arugula with buffalo mozzarella could always get me on to the more exotic stuff. (A few examples: Medaglioni di Vitello con Foie Gras, Salsa allo Sciacchetra, Carre d’Agnello gratinato con Noci ed Erbe, Saltimbocca di Coniglio al Pigato e Salvia ... and on and on. As Will Rogers said, “I et and I et and I didn’t know a thing I et until I et an olive!” My companions almost OD’d on dishes made with vibrant fresh pesto. This is one taste I had to pass on. (However, I loved their green-smeared napkins, their emerald lips and tongues and their delight in the messiness of pesto.) I can’t say I was surprised by the food raves because two people whose opinions I value -- my friend, the painter Peter Rogers and food maven-movie director Nora Ephron -- had each told me before I left for Italy, the same thing. “When you get to Portofino, just start eating at one end of the port in whatever restaurant is serving. Then move around to the next one and try that; you will never have such delicious food in your entire life.” And they were correct. The cafe could be four-star or no star; all of it was so good it blew me away. It Italy, when you’re over cultured, you can sit down somewhere nice and eat, eat, eat. You can have one of those expensive 20-Euro mixed drinks at the Splendido or get a cheap white wine for six Euros, suggested in any modest restaurant. It’s nearly always practically perfect! Incidentally, eating three meals a day, I returned to New York and hadn’t gained an ounce. Ah, Italy!

I Knew Jon Hamm Before He Was a ‘Mad’ Man! “So, ‘Mad Men,’ the U.S. drama set in the golden age of advertising, won the outstanding drama series prize for the third successive year at the Emmys. ... This makes it one of the most successful dramas of all time (‘The Sopranos’ only won the prize twice!)” writes the British critic Veronica Lee. I just love all the adulation for this TV show because I am still convinced that I was the first popular columnist ever to write about it and to urge people to “wait for it” to debut back in 2007. I remember alerting my perspicacious friend, Mary Wells Lawrence, who became an ad heroine by breaking the glass ceiling for women back in the ‘60s. Even though Mary came to look on “Mad Men” with a jaundiced eye
and has found many a fault with it, I am still proud that I saw something unusual in this show. Its compelling and sometimes mysterious dramas have outstripped whether or not the show reflects the exact and actual Madison Avenue rituals of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. And what pleases me most about it is the success of its leading man Jon
Hamm, because I knew all about Jon long before “Mad Men.” I knew he was the actor that the talented writer-actress Jennifer Westfeldt cohabited with and loved very much. If you’d like a glimpse of Jon Hamm before he made it big, I would recommend you find a DVD of Jennifer’s underground movie hit “Kissing Jessica Stein.” In this adorable movie about blind dating and its perils, you can see Jon as one of Jessica’s failed suitors. It’s a far cry from the suave Scotchpouring, tailored wreck of a man that Jon Hamm assays so perfectly on “Mad Men.” WHEN YOU think of the star Sylvester Stallone -- if you do ever think of him -- what does this 64-year-old success machine mean to you and the cultural process? Is Stallone just a cartoonish buffoon who “can’t get no respect?” Well, in GQ magazine this month, he is asked this question and he gives a sensitive, slightly heartbroken answer. But I ask you, if he’s such a bum, how come he just co-wrote, directed, starred in and caused to happen something called “The Expendables,” which has taken in about $100 million dollars to date? Stallone has been Oscar-nominated in a 40-year career and he created two unforgettable film characters -Rocky, in six separate movies -- and then Rambo, who may go on forever. Stallone made his own luck; he wrote “Rocky” and refused to sell it for the movies unless he could play the role. The rest is history. I have known Sylvester Stallone for almost 35 years. He is a surprisingly intelligent and thoughtful gentleman. His big regret is that he ever said “action films” were going to disappear. He knows now that action is here to stay and he’ll probably still be the king of some of this in the future. He and I have often spoken of his pet
project on Edgar Allan Poe and we’ve exchanged notes and books about his hope to put Poe on film. One of the things I like best about Sly is his attitude about his three daughters. He says when they start dating, their boyfriends should get ready for the body bags so he can send their parts home. Sly’s wife tells him he shouldn’t threaten 12-year-olds. But Sly just laughs, “Why not? I think threatening them works really well.” Oh, incidentally, does Hollywood ever appreciate what some people have done for that old town? Sylvester Stallone’s many films have earned more than a billion dollars for La La Land and its business. I think maybe a “special” Academy Award would be appropriate. INCIDENTALLY, ONE OF Sly’s former wives, the statuesque blonde Brigitte
Nielsen, now 47, has decided to write her life story. She’ll call it “Red Flags” and she might well be remembered for such classic movies as “Red Sonja” and “Cobra.” Brigitte says her book will be “a very open and honest and, at times, a harsh book. I’ll be talking about my whole life -- the good times, as well as the difficult years. It will have advice for women who are going down the wrong path like I was and what they should do to stop.” The actress went into rehab in 2007 and has stayed away from her addictions ever since. IT’S HARD to beat the following quote and self-analysis from Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) right out of the New York Times’ recent rave for her fashionable arrival: “I’m so camp, such a gay man trying to get out. It’s exhausting being fabulous.”

Who’s the Real Star of ‘Burlesque’?
“WELL, LIZ ... I’m not really the star. It’s Christina Aguilera’s movie. But, I’m, you know -- pivotal. Me and Stanley Tucci are the meat of the thing. But I’m not the star.” That was Cher, being modest about her role in the hugely anticipated movie “Burlesque.” Cher is always modest. I managed to scrape this little bit of info from the one and only Cher in the most nefarious way. While dining out with Liz Rosenberg, who reps the eternal star, Liz’s cell phone rang. She looked at it and said, “It’s Cher.” And before anybody could say, “It’s none of your business,” I plucked the phone from Liz’s hand and said, “Hi, Cher, this is the other big Liz in your life!” So, we laughed a bit, and she sounds terrific -- full of energy. As we spoke of her stellar qualities, I did mention that the poster for “Burlesque” is a dramatic and glam twoshot of Christina and herself. “Do you still insist you are not the star?” I said. She replied, “Well, it’s not like it’s me alone.

SOME OF you who were hypnotized by MTV back in the good old ‘80s, surely remember Jody Watley? Watley is a talented and beautiful singer/dancer/producer who first made her name with the group Shalamar in the late ‘70s. Then she broke away for a solo career, with hits like “Real Love,” “Some Kind of Lover” and “I’m Looking for a New Love (Baby).” The latter song was especially infectious, paired with a wild video. Jody, a single mother of two, has continued working since her ‘80s heyday -- in music, fashion, even founding her own record company. But one thing she swore that would probably never happen was a reunion with her old pals from Shalamar. (No hard feelings, just ... that was then.) The word “never” should be stricken from use. Shalamar will tour again, around the world, and Jody will be on hand. “What goes around comes around, and people still love the fun sound of Shalamar,” she says. “Even though I said I’d never do it, I thought I’d take my shot. Maybe we’ll get on ‘American Idol’?”

A source said: ‘Simon wants to get the judging names signed, sealed and announced within six weeks. He wants at least one massive American star, someone who is known globally, plus one Brit and at least one authoritative male. ‘Katy was thrilled, especially by the package which is said to be a $340,000-a-show deal.’ The 50-year-old music mogul was said to have been considering a number of big-name American stars before deciding on Katy after seeing how well she coped judging UK hopefuls in Dublin, Ireland. The source added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: ‘Jennifer Lopez was a serious consideration as was her husband Marc Anthony. Mariah Carey’s other half, Nick Cannon, is also in the frame. jacqueline bisset is honored “OH, MY God, you are fabulous, spectacular. I have always thought of you in the same vein as Hedy Lamarr, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner!” “Well, thank you, but they’re all dead.” “And so will you be, someday.” That’s the opening exchange between Chris Kattan, as a besotted film journalist, and Jacqueline Bisset, the grand movie queen, Claudia Benevuti, in Linda Yellen’s “The Last Film Festival.” This witty, off-the-wall movie is agonizingly close to completion, just a few final tweaks needed and some finishing funds to make it distributorready. Well, distributors should jump -- because it is Dennis Hopper’s very last performance! (Hopper plays a director, being honored at the tacky someplace-in-the-Midwest film festival.) One assumes the prestige of releasing the legendary Mr. Hopper’s final onscreen bow to be considerable, as is Jackie’s first out and out comic turn -- she’s a riot. The rest of the cast includes the above-mentioned Mr. Kattan, JoBeth Williams, Leelee Sobieski and Agim Kaba. The latter is sizzling as a young star on the rise, and when this film gets released, he’ll be a young star on the rise!
This is the kind of special movie my old friend Mr. Harvey Weinstein would love, and perfect for my other longtime pal, Peggy Siegal, the NYC dynamo who arranges all those deluxe screenings. Am I being subtle enough? Miss Yellen, the director, adored the late Mr. Hopper and hopes very much that his last, brilliant work be lauded. She also, frankly, wants to be done with “The Last Film Festival,” and get on to her long aborning labor of love, “The Hive,” a projected film about a group of famous artists -- still unknowns -- all living in the same seedy Parisian complex in the early 1900s. MORE ON Miss Bisset: Last Thursday, Jackie flew from Dublin -- where she is filming “An Old-Fashioned Christmas” for Hallmark -- to Paris. There, Miss Bisset was received at the Elysee Palace and awarded France’s distinguished Legion d’honneur. The French have good taste (Jerry Lewis notwithstanding). I always thought Jackie never quite got her due in America because of her sensational beauty. Despite working with many great directors, and delivering excellent performances in films such as “Day for Night,” “Bullitt,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Rich and Famous,” “Class” and dozens of others, it was her face -- and her body -- that were worshipped. Even today, Jackie’s wet T-shirt image from “The Deep” remains an icon of the erotic. And as pleasant as it is to be desired, Miss Bisset has often wondered what would have happened -- or not? -- had she worn a bra in those scenes? In recent years, Bisset has done fine work on TV, including a justly famous arc on “Nip/Tuck.”

SERIES CREATOR TERENCE WINTER TALKS ABOUT THE NEW HBO DRAMA SERIES BOARDWALK EMPIRE, DEBUTING SEPT. 19 Q: How did you get involved in BOARDWALK EMPIRE? TERENCE WINTER: I had just finished working on “The Sopranos” and HBO sent me Nelson Johnson’s book “Boardwalk Empire,” which is a history of Atlantic City. Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson, who produce “Entourage,” “In Treatment” and “How to Make It in America” for HBO, had optioned the book and they thought there might be a series in there. HBO told me, “Why don’t you read it and see what you think. And by the way, Martin Scorsese is attached to this.” As soon as I heard that, I said, “Believe me, if there is a television series in there, I’ll find it!” The subject matter of the book was near and dear to my heart, and the more I read, the more I focused on two eras: the 1920s and the 1950s. The 1950s felt a little too close to Tony Soprano’s world, so I settled on 20s, having really responded to the character of Nucky Johnson, on whom Steve Buscemi’s character is based. Nucky was a real person, equal parts politician and gangster, whose political reach extended all the way to the White House. He was the Treasurer of Atlantic City, and even though there were people who had higher job titles than him, like the mayor, he was the guy who ran everything. As Treasurer, he signed all the city checks, so psychologically he knew that people who worked for the city would feel as if he was giving them his own money, even though it wasn’t really his. He was like a benevolent despot – he ran the city really well, and took care of his constituents. Q: In a sense, he seems more like a modern character than a historical figure. TW: That’s the interesting thing. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The corruption in the 20s was the same as it is today. Follow the money, and you’ll almost always have your answer for whatever happens in the world. Q: How did you get the project get off the ground? TW: It’s no exaggeration to say that Martin Scorsese is the reason I got into this business. I saw “Taxi Driver” for the first time at age 16 and it changed the way I looked at movies; it’s what got me interested in film. So years later, here I was going to the man’s house for a meeting, and I felt like a girl going to the prom. I talked to him about Nucky and the ‘20s and he responded immediately. From there I went off and wrote the script for the pilot, and he really liked it. The initial idea was that he’d just be involved in a producer capacity, as an overseer, but Marty said to me, “This might be something I’d like to direct. How do we move this forward?” After the casting process, it moved forward fairly quickly. There was a lot of schedule juggling because he was busy on “Shutter Island,” but we worked all that out and the first day of shooting was June 9, 2009. waiting for Marty. Then a car pulls up and he gets out and starts blocking out a scene, and we said to each other, “Holy shit, he’s really doing this!” Q: Speaking of casting, was Steve Buscemi the first person chosen for the series? TW: He was. At one point I said to Marty, “What do you think of Steve Buscemi for the lead role?” And he said, “I love him. I’ve always wanted to work with Steve.” I told Marty, “Well, I worked with him on ‘The Sopranos,’ and he’s terrific. He’s got so much range, and this is something we haven’t seen him do before.” Marty suggested we think about it, and a week later he said to me, “I can’t stop thinking about casting Steve Buscemi,” and I said, “I can’t either,” and that was it. Steve was interested and available, and from there we went to the other key parts. Having Marty at the helm was a magnet. It seemed like every day we were signing another great actor. The deeper we got into the casting process, the more intimidating it got for me, and I would think, “I’d better write some good stuff. Look at all these terrific actors!” Q: What has Scorsese’s role been since directing the pilot? TW: He reads all the scripts and gives us notes, and watches cuts of the episodes and gives us notes on those. He’s enjoying the process, which is great. Even though I’ve known him for a couple of years now, I still think, “This is Martin Scorsese I’m talking to about the show!” Q: How do you decide how much exposition to provide on BOARDWALK EMPIRE? You seem to trust viewers to catch on without spelling everything out. TW: I think the audience is a lot smarter than Hollywood and TV generally give them credit for being. People can fill in the blanks; they don’t need to know everything immediately. It’s almost like eavesdropping: You hear bits and pieces and fill in the gaps. I think it’s more satisfying for the audience to be in on that process and discover things for themselves.
