THE WOMAN WARRIOR

Service, sexuality & stereotypes By Tenley Lozano The War Horse

I

f you look at closely at the woman standing by herself, you may catch a glimpse of ink etched into her skin, evidence of her years in the military — adventures and travels shown in colorful detail. Mountains rise from her left arm in watercolor patterns just below her shirtsleeve, symbolizing her first unit as a Coast Guard officer where she spent two and a half years on a ship stationed in the Pacific Northwest. At just over five feet tall with light brown hair and green eyes, she is petite with a muscular build. A medium-sized dog accompanies her everywhere, wearing a vest patterned after the American flag, white stars embroidered on a blue background. Patches sewn on the vest declare “Service Dog, “Do Not Touch, and “Disabled Veteran. Perhaps you look the woman up and down, checking for a prosthetic limb. When you don’t find one, you might assume she’s training the dog for a veterans’ organization. Or maybe you conclude she put a vest on her pet as a way to bring it with her to public places. If you thought any of those things, you’d be wrong. Under her clothes, a small manatee is inked in black on her left ankle, for the friends she made at military college. A loggerhead turtle swims along her right ribs in shades of green, a memento from her first patrol on a Coast Guard cutter. She spent nine weeks onboard the ship working in the Engine Room supporting counter-narcotics missions across the Pacific Ocean. Cherry blossoms bloom above the blue wind-swept skies on her left shoulder, a tribute to her childhood in Northern Virginia and memories of family trips to the Tidal Basin to watch the petals fall like pink snowflakes. A stylized orca on her left ribs for the whale-watching trip she took with a shipboard roommate, an emblem of the quiet acceptance of her bisexuality, at a time when it was still taboo in the military. A pin-up girl poses on her right lower leg, a foot in high-heels propped up on an old-school diving helmet — tattooed on the day she graduated from Navy Dive School. What you won’t see illustrated in ink are the panic attacks and the crushing feelings of an overwhelming weight on her chest, the recent divorce, and her daily struggles. Following her on social media, you might think she lives a privileged life: Working as a ship design engineer, lifting weights in the gym, and backpacking with her dog. WARRIOR, continued on Page 8

The Oscar’s other SNAFU Best picture gaffe was just one of the Academy’s mistakes

Hugh Jackman is back in his iconic “X-Men role of Wolverine in “Logan, but we’re not sure the movie needed to be made.

WOLVERINE NOT AS SHARP IN ‘LOGAN’ Marvel’s latest is more like ‘Grumpy Old X-Men’ By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

In theaters this Friday from writer/director James Mangold, Marvel Entertainment and 20th Century Fox is the anticipated film in the saga of Wolverine — “Logan. The story picks up as Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is a washed out limo driver living well beyond 2016. In fact, far into the future, and his dream is to buy a big boat and sail away from humanity. That was the plan until a man named Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) showed up in his limousine. Pierce makes it plain that he is looking for someone and believes Logan may have answers. Logan assures the intruder that whomever he’s looking for is of no interest to him. That’s when the name Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is mentioned, angering Logan.

Taking off for a hideout, Logan is trying to keep things safe, which is about to change when a little girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) comes into his life. Pierce and Dr. Rice (Richard E. Grant) are looking for the girl and stopping at nothing to make sure it happens. Laura and Charles connect to one another, and it becomes clear that there are more young mutants in hiding from Dr. Rice and Pierce. Logan isn’t happy about any of this and knows the only way to stop it is to get Laura to safety. The danger along the way is hard, fast and out for only one thing — to destroy the young mutants by any means possible. There is a new mutant on the horizon who will challenge them all! It’s always nice to see Jackman, but in “Logan it is cringe worthy watching him continually try to convince me he is old and decrepit. Why do I want to see that? The bad attitude from a younger Wolverine is back, but now seems more like “Grumpy Old X-Men, which might make an awesome film for the next “X-Men installment.

Holbrook as Pierce is just another psycho who has a young-guy chip on his shoulder. With the air of invincibility, he goes after Logan, Charles and Laura. Stewart as Charles was just a hard thing to watch. Grant as Dr. Rice is just the next generation psychopath who doesn’t mind killing a kid or two. Keen had the best part in the film. There isn’t much dialogue and she has the angry eyebrow of Jean Grey with a few moves of her own. It took a hot second to realize there are new X-Men in town. Other cast include Stephen Merchant as Caliban, Elizabeth Rodriguez as Gabriela, Eriq La Salle as Will Munson, Elise Neal as Kathryn Munson, Quincy Fouse as Nate Munson, and Reynaldo Gallegos as Rey. “Logan is a sad film from start to finish, and not in a “you-got-a-tissue? way, as far as I’m concerned. There is nothing worse than beating a comic book anti-hero to death and then dragging him through 137 minutes of MY life that I’ll never get LOGAN, continued on Page 12

In addition to what is now being referred to as “Envelopegate, in which “La La Land was mistakenly named best picture when “Moonlight actually won, the Academy kind of killed off the wrong person. During the “In Memoriam tribute to industry artists who died during the past year, the death of an Australian costume designer Janet Patterson was noted. But the image that appeared in the video montage was of Australian producer Jan Chapman. The very-much-alive Chapman was pretty upset by the mix-up. “I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson, she told Variety. “I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered. Patterson, a four-time Oscar nominee whose work included films like “The Portrait of a Lady and “The Piano, died in October. The cause of death was not made public. “Janet was a great beauty and fourtime Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up, Chapman said. “I am alive and well and an active producer. Every year the Academy takes heat for its “In Memoriam tribute, often because of who is not included. This year fans noted that Alexis Arquette, who died in September from complications from HIV, was not included. As of Monday morning, the Academy had not commented on either mistake.

NFL DRAFT: TOP OFFENSIVE TACKLES UP FOR GRABS If the Bolts don’t go for free safety, O-line is next option

CHARGERS REPORT

by Art Garcia Jr.

W

hile most mock drafts still have the Chargers taking Ohio State free safety Malik Hooker with the seventh pick overall, there are a few draft prognosticators who have the bolts going in a different direction. In our latest look at possible first round picks for the Chargers, we focus on another position the team needs to upgrade — offensive tackle. According to most analysts, the tackles entering the draft this year are the weakest at the position in years, lacking in both talent and depth. With the NFL Combine set to begin March 3, analysts project two offensive tackles being selected in the first round — with two other tackles who could join them if there is a run at the position. Last year seven offensive linemen were taken in the first round, five of whom were offensive tackles. The two tackles projected to be selected in the first round are Alabama’s Cam Robinson and Wisconsin’s Ryan Ramczyk. Two other tackles who could also climb into the first round are Garet Bolles from Utah and Forrest Lamp, a guard out of Western Kentucky, who is projected to make a move to tackle at the next level. Although Hooker is projected to be the Chargers’ top pick, both Robinson and Ramczyk are the other names listed if the Bolts decide to pull the trigger on an of-

Cam Robinson, 6-6, 310, Alabama

Ranked No. 22 overall by Scouts Inc., No. 16 and No. 23 by ESPN analysts Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr., respectively, Robinson will forgo his senior year after dominating the position as a three-year starter. The winner of the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top offensive lineman following his sophomore season, Robinson

has the size and skills to play both tackle positions and the versatility to move inside to play guard if need be. Kiper: “This isn’t a great class for top-tier blindside protectors, but Robinson is at the top of the list, though I think his best skill — run-blocking — means he’d be better as a right tackle at the next level. A three-year starter for the Crimson Tide, he’s a known commodity in the NFL. The Chargers ranked in the bottom third of the league in rushing (3.8 yards per carry, 94.4 yards per game) in 2016, and tackles Joe Barksdale and King Dunlap have underwhelmed. While Robinson is Kiper’s top-ranked

offensive lineman in the draft at No. 10 overall, McShay has the Alabama AllAmerican ranked No. 16 on his top-32 big board. In fact, McShay believes Robinson will fall to the Seahawks at No. 26 making him the third tackle taken right behind Utah’s Garett Bolles’ who McShay says will go to the Texans with the 25th pick. McShay: “Robinson has some athletic limitations and isn’t an elite pass-blocker, but he has great size and experience in a zone-blocking scheme. The Seahawks are in desperate need of upgrading both offensive tackle spots. Robinson could be a good fit on the right side. Others projecting Robinson going to the Chargers in their first mock drafts include the UT’s Eddie Brown, Walter Football and Rotoworld.

FEAR NO MIRRORÂŽ

The top ranked offensive tackle by Scouts Inc. at No. 19, Ramczyk is ranked No. 15 and No. 25 on McShay’s and Kiper’s big boards, respectively. Despite being regarded as one of the top tackles in the draft, concerns about Ramczyk include starting experience at the FBS level and how fast he can recover from hip surgery. Analysts projecting Ramczyk to be the Chargers’ top pick include Chad Reuter (NFL.com), Chris Roling (Bleacherreport) and Pro Football Focus (PFF). Reuter: “Philip Rivers doesn’t have many seasons left; the team must protect him while it still can. Ramczyk will also help pave the way for fellow Badger Melvin Gordon. Scouts Inc: “Ramczyk is a JUCO transfer who redshirted in 2015 so he only has TACKLES, continued on Page 12

DOES THOMPSON HAVE WOODLEY ‘FIGURED OUT’? By Ben Fowlkes MMA Junkie

By the fifth round of their match at UFC 205, Stephen Thompson says he had UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley pretty much figured out. He knew it, too. He felt it, he said, which might explain his strong finish in a fight that ended in the rarely seen majority draw. What it doesn’t explain is exactly how and when he solved the Woodley (16-31 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC) puzzle, especially since Thompson (13-1-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC) spent the majority of the previous round bleeding and surviving, both of which he proved to be very skilled at. It all started with Woodley’s right hand. After mauling Thompson on the mat in the first, then keeping things relatively even with him on the feet in Rounds 2 and 3, the fourth round was when Woodley finally landed the same shot that won him the welterweight strap, only this time the fight didn’t end when the other guy hit the floor. In fact, after the first solid right hand, Thompson popped up like he’d landed on a spring. Then he retreated into a defensive mode just long enough to give him the ill-advised confidence to step into the second right hand, which is when he went down like a drunk falling off a barstool, grasping for anything within reach on his

Stephen Thompson will fight Tyron Woodley in a rematch of their UFC 205 fight.

way down. What followed next was a three-minute demonstration in resiliency. Sensing a finish, Woodley threw the book at Thompson. Punches, knees, elbows, even a guillotine choke that, had it worked, would have

been Woodley’s first submission win since 2009. Thompson held on, escaped and finished the round on top. Then he helped Woodley to his feet after the horn, one of those nice guy moves that has the added

bonus of reminding the other guy that you just took his best shots and, know what, you’re not even mad. I’m not saying you can’t figure an opponent out like that, but there’s got to be an easier way. From the outside, it would seem that what Thompson learned about Woodley over the course of their first 25 minutes inside the cage together is mostly stuff he probably should have known already. The question is how much it will help Thompson in their pay-per-view rematch in Las Vegas to have experienced the lesson firsthand back at UFC 205. After 20 pro fights and roughly seven years as a pro, the die seems more or less cast when it comes to Woodley. He might get better or more efficient at the things he does, but he’s still a bread-and-butter fighter who thinks takedowns and right hands before anything else. Thompson, with his traditional martial arts style that he’s molded to suit his MMA needs, feels like the one with more room for growth. When you depend so heavily on footwork and distance control, figuring out those important little things about an opponent could make all the difference. Then again, the nice thing about being a fighter like Woodley is that you don’t always have to figure too much out. All you need is to get the other guy on the business end of your right hand once, and suddenly all other concerns just vanish.

Tours of the Santa Margarita Ranch House National Historic Site, hosted by the Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores Docents, will run from noon to 2 p.m. on March 11th, April 8th, May 6th, June 3rd, July 8th, August 5th and September 9th. The Ranch House was home to Pio Pico, last governor of Mexican California, and several succeeding owners before housing United States Marine Corps Commanding Generals after the Camp Pendleton was established. The Marine Corps Mechanized Museum will host similar tours from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on March 11, April 8,

8 March 1, 2017

May 6, June 3, July 8, August 5 and September 9. The Mechanized Museum features the world’s largest collection of Marine Corps vehicles, artillery and related artifacts from WWII to the present. “The ability to see the artifacts of that past helps us to understand how and why daily life was different, said Faye Jonason, Camp Pendleton History Department. “How it required courage, dedication and ingenuity to get where we are today, and through the examples we learn what achievements we might accomplish in the future. Regular monthly tours of both facilities continue to run on the first Tuesday, second Wednesday and third Thursday of every month. To reserve a spot on one of the 75th Anniversary Saturday tours, or one of the regular tours, send a request to MCBCAMPEN_history@usmc.mil or call (760)725-5758. Requests must be submitted at least seven days in advance. In addition to the tours, Camp Pendleton welcomes the public to the 2017 Battle Color ceremony at 3:30 P.M. on March 9,

2017 at the 11 Area Football Field. The battle color ceremony features the U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, the Silent Drill Platoon, and the Marine Corps Color Guard. “It is important to look back on the history of the Base’s last 75 years to more fully appreciate the service and honor of the many veterans who came before us, said Jonason.

At her best, she can throw her bodyweight onto the barbell and lift it up into the air. But her best happens less and less frequently these days. Some weeks she can’t lift more than the empty bar over her head without feeling a muscle twitch with pain, signaling an oncoming migraine. She chooses to hike in the backcountry for days alone with her dog because she finds it difficult to trust people, and her dog is supportive and reliable. When she walks the mountains with her mutt she feels completely in control of her life. They are a team, watching out for each other on the trail and in town. If you look through her medical record, you might understand her better. X-rays show early-stage arthritis in her neck. MRIs tell of bulging discs and narrowing spinal canals. Her Vet eran Affairs medical record details Post Traumatic Stress and chronic migraines from years of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and discrimination. It lists the medications she takes: naproxen for pain, propranolol and triptan for migraines, escitalopram for depression and anxiety, and a prescription for a Medical Alert Service Dog to assist with Post Traumatic Stress. What the VA records don’t show are the bi-weekly chiropractor visits and weekly acupuncture sessions she needs to reduce the severity and frequency of migraines, decrease her reliance on pharmaceuticals, and manage nearconstant pain. When people see her with her Service Dog, they sometimes ask if the dog is a disabled veteran. It frustrates her that their minds are more readily able to picture a fifty-pound mutt serving in the military than a young woman. She considers removing the “Disabled Veteran patch from her dog’s vest in order to avoid those awkward questions, but decides against it. She faced discrimination then, and she can handle the presumptions now. She is proud of her service, and doesn’t regret it, regardless of the invisible injuries it caused. She wants everyone to reevaluate their idea of what makes a veteran, because this is what a disabled veteran looks like.

After graduating from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2008, Tenley Lozano spent five years as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. AMERICA’S FINEST NOW A ‘COAST GUARD CITY’ The city of San Diego was officially designated as a Coast Guard City on Feb. 23 during a ceremony at Coast Guard Sector San Diego. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft bestowed this honor to San Diego with approval from Congress. The designation is predicated on San Diego’s ability to erect monuments to the Coast Guard, organize civic celebrations and offer special recognition and support U.S. Coast Guard morale, welfare and recreational initiatives. “Make no mistake our partnership with this community has been an enduring one, and it will endure for centuries to come, Zukunft said. The very nature of the Coast Guard’s mission creates a need for understanding between the Coast Guard and the local community. Coast Guard commands seek to develop the kinds of relationships that enable unit commanders to sense public attitudes and interests. During the ceremony, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, presented keys to the city to Zukunft and Capt. Joseph Buzzella, commander, Sector San Diego. “It’s no secret that we are so very, very proud of our military heritage here in San Diego, Faulconer said. “With this designation we now have the opportunity to shine a light on the hardworking men and women who have dedicated their life to making a career and serving our country in the United States Coast Guard. Making Coast Guard members and their families’ feel at home in their home away from home is an invaluable contribution to morale and service excellence. The Coast Guard is pleased to recognize Coast Guard Cities — those

cities that have extended so many considerations to the Coast Guard family. Because of San Diego’s proximity to the international border and the amount of commerce that passes through its ports on a daily basis, the Coast Guard’s role in San Diego is inherently magnified. “In San Diego, our ports and our border are economic engines for our region and the Coast Guard helps us en-

sure that both run smoothly, said U.S. Rep. Scott Peters of the 52nd District of California. The Coast Guard footprint in San Diego includes the Coast Guard Pacific Tactical Law Enforcement Team, Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team 91109, Sector San Diego and its tenant commands, as well as numerous personnel in supporting roles throughout other service units in the region.

At the pre-birth class for couples who’d already had at least one child, the instructor raised the question of how to break the news to an older child. “Some parents tell the older child, ‘We love you so much that we decided to bring another child into our family.’ “But think about that for a second. one year of starting experience at the FBS level and the relatively small sample size of work is a concern. Of even greater concern, he’ll reportedly undergo hip surgery to repair a torn labrum following the Cotton Bowl and the recovery time would more than likely prevent him from working out for teams. That said, he projects as a fringe first-round pick based on his tape and he hasn’t reached his potential as he can clean up his technique most notably his footwork and pad level. The Endzone: Unlike the 2016 draft, which saw a number of talented offensive linemen taken in the first round, this year’s group could have just two selections taken in round one. “The first offensive lineman comes off the board at No. 20, which would be the lowest ever since the 1970 merger, McShay said. “This is a weak O-line class. Ramczyk, who’s recovering from hip surgery, has the best tape of the group. He also has just one year of major college experience after transferring from UW-Stevens Point (Division III). Long and well-built, Ramczyk would serve as a muchneeded upgrade for the Broncos up front. Kiper has three tackles listed among his top 32 prospects —Bolles at No. 23; Robinson at No. 24 and Ramczyk at No. 25. McShay has two on his list — Ramczyk at No. 15 and Lamp at No. 22. Scouts Inc. also has three OL on its top 32 list — Ramczyk at No. 19, Lamp at No. 23 and Wisconsin’s Ryan Ramczyk is coming off hip surgery, but is still a top-rated draft pick. Robinson at No. 26.

back. Don’t misunderstand me, I wanted to cheer for the film, but instead jeers snuck out now and then. The story did absolutely nothing for me, and I’m sure I’ll get a yelling from a lot of people for saying that. Do I have to read the comic to understand what the hell is going on? It’s like an X-Men sludge mixed up to give Wolverine another adventure at what I’m sure I don’t know. Did Wolverine really need another movie? I can honestly say that I have a sore neck from the amount of head shakes I did. What goes on with Charles isn’t much better. I mean, seriously? If the anti-hero Wolverine is to get a beat down, there is no respect for Charles at all! Of course, I’m trying not to give too much away, which isn’t all that difficult in the case of “Logan. I’m sure that comic fans will be happy and feel a sense of closure. My sense of closure came from finally feeling free to walk out of the theater! So prepare for a slashing and bashing that comes with hanging out in mutant territory. In the end — don’t mess with the limo driver! Jeri Jacquin is the Movie Maven. For more on films and television, go to http://moviemaven. homestead.com.
