LOYALTY, COURAGE & FRIENDSHIP Mara shines as ‘Megan Leavey’
By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress
From director Gabriela Cowperthwaite and Bleeker Street Media is a compelling story that needs to be seen because of “Megan Leavey. Megan (Kate Mara) is a young woman staggering through life. Unhappy with her job and unhappy living at home with mom Jackie (Edie Falco) and her boyfriend Jim (Will Patton), it seems the days just blur. That is, until she makes the decision to hop a bus and join the U.S. Marine Corps. It didn’t take long before Megan was in trouble with the Corps at Camp Pendleton, which has her cleaning the kennels of the K9 unit. There she meets Rex, a four-legged, anti-social dog who gives trainers a difficult time. Megan continues to ask Gunny Martin (Common) to become part of the K9 unit. When a situation presents itself, Megan and Rex are paired together, and so begins a training of each other to become a strong unit through patience and friendship. Sent to Camp Ramadi in Iraq, Megan and Rex are on missions to sniff out IEDs, clearing the way for soldiers and the Iraqi people. She meets Matt Morales (Ramon Rodriguez) who is also part of the K9 unit and starts to become comfortable being part of a team. Then a mission puts both of their lives in danger, changing the path for them both. Megan knows that she cannot continue on her path without Rex and with dad Bob’s (Bradley Whitford) push, she will do anything to get Rex back by her side. Mara as Megan portrays a young woman who clearly has problems dealing with home and family. Making a swift move to join the military, Mara’s character puts up serious walls until she ‘MEGAN LEAVEY’, continued on Page 8

n theaters is a film about a young woman who joins the Marines looking for something to give her life purpose. Not a very social person, Megan Leavey finds a spark at Camp Pendleton when she meets a dog named Rex — an equally tough nut to crack. Through patience and training with the canine unit, Megan and Rex are sent into combat to sniff out explosives buried in Iraqi dirt roads. This is their story of a bond that even combat cannot break. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite has brought some of the most amazing documentaries to audiences, making an impact with her work. In television she has produced for the History Channel “Shootout: Fallujah, “Shootout: Battle Cry Ramadi and “Hunt for Bin Laden. In film, she directed “City Lax: An Urban Lacrosse Story and a little film about a big whale in the still-talked about piece “Blackfish.
1959
Her current film, “Megan Leavey, has already won the Truly Moving Picture Award from Heartland Film, and I suspect there will be more accolades to come. I spoke with Cowperthwaite about the many issues tackled in the film — from the emotions of being a woman in war to the struggles of our military returning with PTSD. Jeri Jacquin: What drew you to this project? Gabriela Cowperthwaite: I think it was an opportunity to really understand the war from a female Marine’s access point. That was an incredible opportunity for me, as I have worked on documentaries on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and never really remember an interview with a woman. I never really got to know their thinking in these situations, so for me that was a tremendous opportunity. In addition to that, I never knew about the canine unit. I knew nothing about it working on those other documentaries. So suddenly I’m coming into this war on two different perspectives that I don’t think we

have heard a lot from before. What a great entry point into the context of war that can maybe access more people teaching them about loyalty, friendship and sacrifice. JJ: What was your impression when you first read the script? GC: I thought, “I can do this. I think, honestly, because it is a true story and I’m a true story buff coming from making documentaries. It was a female protagonist and a cool one. For me it was important for me to depict a woman that I feel like I know and that represents my friends and family members. Someone who is making a brave decision and has some witty comebacks and isn’t just a wallflower that smiles on cue. I just wanted to see myself and my friends in this kind of film, and this seemed like the opportunity. JJ: The film addresses PTSD, which is an important issue for the military. Was that an interest for you as well? DIRECTOR, continued on Page 8

KANON’S ‘DEFECTORS’ ASKS MORAL QUESTIONS By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress
One of the greatest crimes against a country is treason, spying for the enemy. A recent brilliantly written espionage book, “Defectors, by best-selling author Joseph Kanon, is both fast-paced and realistic. This Cold War thriller shows the moves and plays as if the characters are in a chess game. Beyond that, it emphasizes the human side, what it is like for family members of a traitor, as well as the motivations of someone who is willing to betray and lie to everyone. This gripping story tells of two brothers divided over Cold War loyalties. Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for the story? Joseph Kanon: The origin came out of something personal. Years ago I worked with a man who actually had a brother that defected. It was a fascinating story to me, and I realized no one talked about the family left behind. Once he had defected, that was the last heard of him. I thought about the after story, since he did not just vanish. I wondered what kind of life did he have, and what did he do all day. EC: How did you do the research? JK: I read about Kim Philby, a highranking member of British intelligence who was a Soviet agent. He defected in 1963 after working for the KGB. I had the

book take place before his defection because later he became disillusioned, and I did not want him to be a factor. I wanted the defectors I wrote to be ideological, those that converted to Communism in the 1930s as an act of faith. They

thought they were changing the world for the better, now in the frontal lobe, Moscow. This was the high summer for the Soviet experiment, before the admittance that it was a big mistake. Soviet prestige was at an all time high with Sputnik and the consumer level improving along with the U.S. embarrassments of Gary Powers, the U-2 pilot captured, and the Bay of Pigs fiasco. EC: Did you actually go to Moscow? JK: Yes. I like to go to the places I write about, and to walk the city on the ground. I want it to be accurate on how you get from point A to point B. I tracked down where the real defectors lived. Since the Soviet Union was, and is, a closed society, any housing assignment would show how much the party valued someone, the prestige factor. I made the main character Frank’s apartment right around the corner from where Philby lived. EC: Today people might think of Edward Snowden. Would he have regrets,
does he miss his country and family? JK: That is a legitimate question. Even today I would not wish on anybody to live in Russia. Although the defectors I wrote about were considered heroes, they faced the salt-line of Russian culture, the international ideals of Communism versus the traditional Russian xenophobia. They were, and still are, a country that always distrusts foreigners. No one wanted to have anything to do with the defectors so they never really participated in Soviet society. Ultimately, they only had themselves to fall back on. EC: There is an interesting quote by the defectors, where they claimed not to have done anything that would get Americans killed. Please, explain! JK: Even though they appear to be ordinary people, treason is in their blood. Betrayal comes naturally to them. They told these lies to themselves and others to self-justify. In fact, what they did, led to others’ deaths. Their family was affected with many losing their jobs and came under suspicion. The defectors ignored the fact that they blew up the lives of people around them. There is this 24/7 lying to someone all the time. EC: Frank, the defector, was pretty unlikable? JK: He was someone perfectly willing to betray his country and family. He is a narcissist. I did not write him as a sympathetic character, considering he did something terrible and continues to believe in what he did. He has a loyalty to Communism and the KGB. He totally has bought into the myth that they are efficient, knowledgeable, successful and a superior elite group. Yet, he loves his brother Simon and vice versa. EC: What do you want the readers to get out of the book? JK: I want the story to be entertaining, but also allow readers to learn something. I hope they ask the moral questions, how do we live and how should we live? To make them think what would they have done in that position? There is a minefield of ethical questions. What is the correct thing to do?

JENKINS HOPES TO IMPACT SAFETY POSITION CHARGERS REPORT

A
s the Chargers end their last week of practice in San Diego, MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. sat down with rookie Rayshawn Jenkins to ask him a few questions. A fourth round pick out of the University of Miami, the 6-foot-1-inch, 214-pound Jenkins appears to have all the attributes of a safety playing in new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s system. Last season, Jenkins had 76 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two interceptions and seven pass breakups for the Hurricanes. Art Garcia Jr.: The safety position has a lot of competition between veterans and young players out there, how are things going for you? Rayshawn Jenkins: Everything is going real well so far. I’m adjusting to the new atmosphere I’m in, the old guys have kind of welcomed the younger guys with open arms, and I feel like everything as of right now is going great. AG: Did you know anything about the Chargers prior to being drafted? RJ: The only guys I knew about was

So it was one of those draft day decisions where they called me up and said they were going to “trade up for you and pick you with our next pick. And in my head I’m thinking, “I didn’t even talk to you guys, but I was just so excited — it was an electrifying feeling and I loved every minute of it. AG: Where were you when you got the call, at home with your family? RJ: Yes sir, with butterflies in my stomach. But the overall experience was great and I’m just happy I did receive the phone call. For that, we turn to higher basketball authority. “They work well together. It’s not one guy on that team that’s selfishly looking for himself and not for the team. When you can combine talent (and) unselfishness, and then you can combine guys that play hard, that’s going to result in some really good things. That was LeBron James, describing the Warriors — admiringly, perhaps a little enviously? — last week, when the Cavs were down 3-0 in the series. James didn’t gush over Curry’s perfect shooting stroke, or Green’s passing, or Thompson’s defense, or Durant’s supreme efficiency — the talents that make them individually great. He praised their selflessness — the trait that allows those talents to mesh. For that, these Warriors should be celebrated, not scorned. GC: I am very interested in PTSD, and for me that was one of the most important things that I could address in the film. It is very special to me, because I think trying to understand what it is like for our military to come home is something we don’t have very much experience with in the civilian world. I don’t think we can truly know what they went through, and I think it’s hard to understand what they need. I think we are getting to be better listeners in that way along with the help of PTSD groups. For me to pull back the curtain on what that is like to come back physically and mentally in tact, but a little bit broken, is very important. JJ: Everyone watching the film fell in love with Rex. How was that for you, especially in this context of loud and intense? GC: He was such an amazing animal and so sharply focused and he was treat driven. He loved doing things, and a beautiful animal. I knew he was going to knock it out of the park with his performance. I mean, you look at that face and look at those eyes that stare right at you, and you feel the impact on an emotional level. He was going to give us the take. JJ: Did you have a lot of military specialists helping? GC: Yes, we had Megan, who was in the boot camp scene as a drill sergeant, but from beginning to end of production we had two Marine consultants the entire time. Specifically, we had two female
creates an unbreakable bond with Rex. What is amazing, is that feeling this connection and watching the story unfold between Megan and Rex; it is not surprising that they would work together so brilliantly. Mara and Rex are lovely in this film, and the audience fell in love with them both. Common as Gunny Martin is a man who clearly doesn’t take any guff from anyone — including a pint-sized Megan Leavey. Testing her potential and patiently watching to see if her dedication to the K9 unit is solid, he gives us both the tough gunny as well as a man who understands the hurt of battle. Rodriguez as Morales is a wise-cracking but dedicated part of the K9 unit in Iraq. He manages to bring down some of Megan’s emotional walls, but it can take the snap of a finger to bring them back up. Patton as Jim is not someone Megan is thrilled to have around, and this is a small role. Whitford as Megan’s father Bob is a man who realizes the choices he made in his life have affected his daughter. Wanting to reach out and help her, he just isn’t sure how to do it or if it would make a difference. This is a different role for Whitford, and he delivers with a lovely scene when Megan returns from Iraq. Falco as Jackie is — well — Falco. She is overly dramatic and wildly awesome to watch as Megan’s mother. Big or small, Falco brings her best to every role she does and always manages to surprise me. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Megan Leavey four and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. It is very easy to call this a feel-good film, but that would be an injustice to the story being told. There are so many issues that are handled in this story with straight forwardness, no sugar-coating and boldly done. It is the story of a young woman dealing with the situation her life is in and knowing at some point something had to give. Joining the Marine Corps gives Megan the opportunity to become part of something bigger than herself and not just fighting in a war, but becoming responsible for Rex and the lives of everyone around her. Mara takes this role and lets us all experience the journey of this young woman until the end where we come to understand more than we ever could. “Megan Leavey is a story that is well done, dealing with issues that might be uncomfortable for some to see but necessary to experience. This film speaks on love, understanding, patience and a friendship that saved not only the lives of others — but of one another as well. In the end — a true story of a Marine and her best friend!
Edie Falco and Kate Mara star as Jackie and Megan Leavey in “Megan Leavey.
Marine consultants during the boot camp training and we had two canine unit Marine consultants with the canine unit. JJ: Having Megan there must have really been an awesome experience for you as well. GC: She rips into Kate in this one drill sergeant scene and it’s so awesome. It’s Megan doing what happened to her except it’s directed at Kate. Megan is so formidable, and her presence is very grounding. She keeps it real and gave us amazing notes for boot camp, and because there are things that the male military consultants wouldn’t know.

JJ: Your cast is stellar — where do you start? GC: Edie Falco is a cast member where I thought, “Did someone give me a Bugatti or a Ferrari or something? I thought someone just gave me this amazing gift, and her portrayal of her relationship with Megan was more than I could have asked for. She brings it times 10 and is such a consummate pro. The key to directing Edie is to just get out of her way and let her do it. Bradley Whitford is so lovely. He is such an amazing person and the roles he has played in the past, man, like being the smartest guy in the room or fast talking witty comebacks. This role for him was so different because he is a dad that doesn’t know what to do. Watching Bradley channel this whole other person is beautiful. JJ: And Kate? GC: Oh please! I think my single favorite thing about watching this film is watching Kate just because I think she does things in this that I’ve never seen her do before. Understanding how far she has to emotionally travel in these 90 minutes of the film, I think she is masterful. She does so much to bring humanity to this story, and you can’t take your eyes off of her. JJ: When people, especially military, leave the theater, what do you want them to take away after seeing “Megan Leavey? GC: Thank you for your service is always there. I think we say that, but I’m not sure we always know exactly what we mean when we do. I hope this film gives you an idea of what is meant when we say it as we watch all these service people doing their job. This movie specifically shows you the canine unit and their handlers and how these people are in the front of the front lines. They are clearing the way for the soldiers that are behind them and Iraqi civilians. There is this thing, this beautifully humane thing that these units are doing and these dogs are doing that just deserve our understanding and gratitude. USD grads among sailors picked for astronaut class Three sailors are on their way to join the growing list of Navy astronauts. NASA announced that Lt. Kayla Barron, Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Dominick and Dr. Jonny Kim were selected from a record breaking 18,300 applicants to join its 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class of just 12 people. Barron, Dominick and Kim will return to Johnson Space Center in Houston in August to begin two years of training. Then, they could be assigned to any of a variety of missions, including: performing research on the International Space Station, launching from American soil on spacecraft built by commercial companies and departing for deep space missions on NASA’s new Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket. Both Dominick and Kim graduated from the University of San Diego. Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Dominick, a Colorado native, earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of San Diego and a Master of Science degree in systems engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He graduated from U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. He has accumulated more than 1,600 flight hours in 28 aircraft models, 400 carrier arrest-
ments, 61 combat missions and nearly 200 flight test carrier landings (arrested and touch-and-go). Dominick was commissioned through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Matthew Dominick following graduation from the University of San Diego in 2005 and reported to Pensacola, Fla., for flight training. He was designated as a naval aviator in 2007 and reported to Strike Fighter Squadron 106, Naval Air Station Oceana, Va., for transition to the F/A-18E Super Hornet. Following his initial training, Dominick was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 143. He made two deployments to the North Arabian Sea, flying close air support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While with Strike Fighter Squadron 143, Dominick was selected to attend the Naval Postgraduate School / U.S. Naval Test Pilot School Co-Operative Program, where he earned a Master of Science in systems engineering from the
Naval Post Graduate School and graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. Designated a developmental test pilot in 2013, Dominick was assigned to the fixed wing carrier suitJonny Kim ability flight test department of Air Test Evaluation Squadron 23. There, he served as developmental flight test project officer for a variety of carrier suitability test programs, including MAGIC CARPET, Joint Precision Approach & Landing Systems, Infrared Search and Track Pod, and the precision approach and landing certification of aircraft carriers. He flew developmental flight tests in the F/A-18ABCD, F/A-18E/F, and EA-18G. Additionally, he contributed to the X-47B (Unmanned Carrier Launched Surveillance and Strike), V-22, T-45, E-2C, C-2A and F-35C test programs. In 2016, Dominick returned to an operational naval squadron, Strike Fighter Squadron 115, flying F/A-18E Super Hornets in the forward deployed naval forces
stationed in Atsugi, Japan. At the time of his selection as an astronaut candidate, Dominick was at sea aboard USS Ronald Reagan serving as the department head for Strike Fighter Squadron 115. Dr. Jonny Kim, a California native, trained and operated as a Navy SEAL, completing more than 100 combat operations and earning a Silver Star and Bronze Star with Combat “V. Afterward, he went on to complete a degree in mathematics at the University of San Diego and a Doctorate of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Kim enlisted in the Navy as a seaman recruit following graduation from Santa Monica High School in 2002. After completion of training at Naval Special Warfare, he was assigned as a special warfare operator to SEAL Team 3. He served as a combat medic, sniper, navigator and point man on more than 100 combat operations spanning two deployments to the Middle East before he was commissioned into the Medical Corps following graduation from the University of San Diego in 2012. At the time of his selection, Kim was a resident physician in emergency medicine.

Chicken legs
A man was driving along a freeway when he noticed a chicken running along side his car. He was amazed to see the chicken keeping up with him because he was doing 50 MPH. He accelerated to 60 and the chicken stayed right next to him. He sped up to 75 MPH and the chicken passed him up. The man then noticed that the chicken had three legs, so he followed the chicken down a road and ended up at a farm.
The curious man got out of his car and noticed that all the chickens had three legs. He asked the farmer, “What’s up with these chickens? The farmer explained, “Well, everybody likes chicken legs, so I bred a three-legged bird. I’m gonna be a millionaire. “How do they taste? asked the man. “Don’t know, replied the farmer. “Haven’t caught one yet.

Positive thinking
A unit of soldiers was marching a long dusty march across the rolling prairie. It was a hot blistering day and the men, longing for water and rest, were impatient to reach the next town. A rancher rode past. “Say, friend, called out one of the men. “How far is it to the next town? “Oh, a matter of two miles or so, I reckon, called back the rancher. Another long hour dragged by, and another rancher was encountered. “How far to the next town? the men asked him eagerly. “Oh, a good two miles. After another nearly half hour longer of marching, a third rancher came by. “Hey, how far’s the next town? “Not far, was the encouraging answer. “Only about two miles. “Well, sighed the optimistic sergeant. “Thank God, we’re holding our own, anyhow!

that plea in person. Think about that: Three of the best players in the world, who had already won a title a year earlier, suppressing their pride to tell Durant, simply, “We need you. Pro sports are so often dominated by ego and self-indulgence. But the Warriors invited a four-time scoring champion to join them, potentially at the expense of their own shots, their own glory, their own spotlight. That takes humility. Not every NBA star would do the same. “There is something that is very special about them as human beings, Warriors coach Steve Kerr told Bleacher Report in a back hallway late Monday, his shirt and hair still soaked with Champagne. “That’s what, to me, carries teams over the top. A lot of teams have talent, and obviously we have great talent. But when that talent is committed to the greater good and to each other and they actually genuinely care about each other and enjoy each other, that takes you over the top. It’s evident every time the Warriors take the court. You see it in their beautiful playmaking, sure, but also in the way they pat each other on the chest after a miscommunication (instead of scowling), and in the way they (sometimes quite literally) pick each other up: On Monday, Green actually caught Thompson in midair, saving him from a potentially damaging fall. Often, the supportive gestures are more subtle.
Draymond Green and Steph Curry celebrate after the Warriors 129-120 win on Monday night.
“I had my lows in the season, where I was beating myself up, where I was struggling, Durant said. “But the great part about it is, I’ll get a tap on the head from Steph or Draymond. Durant recalled that during one particularly rough patch, he went to dinner with Green, who told him to just be himself. “To have teammates that encourage you, that lift you up, that’s what we all need in life, he said. The Warriors do this in the most obvious way every game, making the extra passes that allow them all to thrive. They averaged 298 passes in this series (35 per game more than the Cavaliers) and created 70 points per game via assist (to 54 for Cleveland).

Rather than eclipse anyone, Durant helped them all shine that much greater. Curry, who struggled in the last two Finals, was superb this time, averaging 26.8 points, 9.4 assists and 8.0 rebounds. Thompson scored a little less (16.4 points per game) but channeled his energy into a defensive clinic. “Character and basketball IQ and work ethic, said Mychal Thompson, Klay’s father and a former NBA champion himself. “They have it, and that’s why they’re so successful. Durant was named the unanimous MVP of the series, after averaging 35.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists, while shooting 56 percent from the field and 47 percent from three-point range. That’s the outcome you would expect from an elite scorer in the Finals, but what the Warriors learned this season is that Durant doesn’t need the points to feel good about himself. Warriors officials never worried whether Durant could blend his talents with their group. Kerr said Durant’s unselfish-
ness and basketball IQ were always evident, even from afar. But one early game nevertheless stuck out. On Dec. 3, Durant took just seven shots in a 29-point rout of Phoenix. It would be the fewest attempts Durant would register in any full game this season — and his fewest in any game in the last eight years. “And he was the happiest guy in the locker room, Kerr said. “He did not care that he didn’t get a ton of shots. That was very telling. None of that, of course, will stop critics from painting the Warriors as villains, or bullies, or even cowards, for daring to add the best available player. In this society, we revere excellence, but resent excess. Golden State is the NBA’s 1 percenter, the billionaire who just bought a fourth yacht. None of this will ruin the NBA. But for the moment, the Warriors have certainly robbed the league of some suspense, and any glimmer of competitive balance. The Cavs, despite three stars of their own, barely had a chance against them (“We were another opponent in their way, James said). No one in the West came close. There are no new rivals on the horizon. Those are real concerns for the league, but it’s not the Warriors’ problem. Their only mission is to be the greatest team they can be, and Durant got them there. If the end was anticlimactic, well, the basketball was still beautiful to watch. So yes, resent the Warriors if you must — the embarrassment of riches, the warped playing field, the dread they’re inspiring across the league. But the real villains are the owners who lack a coherent vision, the GMs who squander their assets and the players who refuse to sacrifice for a greater good. The Warriors? They’re what’s right with the NBA.
