CLINTON VS. TRUMP

It’s worse than picking the lesser of two evils By Michael Brendan Dougherty The Week

M

illions of Americans detest the idea of choosing between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Perhaps you’re among them. You may think that both presumptive nominees are unfit for office. You may loathe the way their candidacies are warping the personalities of your friends and family, particularly on social media. Perhaps you simply feel that each of these candidates is somehow undeserving of the time and energy that is required to vote. You might also feel some pressure to suck it up and vote for “the lesser of two evils. Well, I have a simple message for you: Don’t. Don’t let anyone steal that disgust from your heart. It is a precious thing. You should treasure your disgust as a sign of your decency, particularly because hardly anyone else will. Don’t let anyone tell you that the nearly uncontrollable urge to retch at the thought of this election is disproportionate, or somehow uncivil. When you contemplate the fate of your country in 2016, you have the right to be depressed, or even despairing. You know that Donald Trump is an unstable imbecile. But this knowledge doesn’t oblige you to discover new qualities in the bottomlessly cynical, powermad grifter Hillary Clinton. In your heart of hearts, you may suspect that if she thought it would get her four centimeters closer to the presidency, Hillary Clinton would devour your squealing grandchild, or her own, live on the set of “The View. It’s a terror to contemplate. But in no way should this terror obviate your equally credible suspicion that Donald Trump is rabies in human form, likely to drive our country into a feverish search for scraps in the neighbors’ garbage only to get us run over by a truck. Tens of millions of dollars and an army of journalists and paid hacks will try to morally compel you to choose either Clinton or Trump. The internet and the nightly news will become a kind of active chain of volcanic pustules, emitting outrage and manufactured umbrage in your direction for the next

AMP BUEHRING, Kuwait — The sun is setting over the horizon here as Army Sgt. Cassandra Peel practices one of her final kicks of the day. Precision. Power. Passion. These words come to mind as she delivers one swift kick after another. It is evident that this woman is in her element. Peel, an avionics mechanic with Bravo Company, 640th Aviation Support Battalion, 40th Combat Aviation Brigade, is a self-proclaimed “Army brat, born at Fort Riley, Kansas. Parented by two retired service members, Peel and her four siblings grew up intimately familiar with the Army lifestyle. After first grade her family relocated to Kaiserslautern, Germany, where Peel spent the majority of her childhood. Today, Peel is well-traveled and proficient in German. But she has another skill set that may come as a revelation even to those who know her fairly well: a 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo. Peel, who is now an assistant instructor at a taekwondo academy in Arcata, California, was first drawn to the sport six years ago during her freshman year in college at Kansas State University. She attended her first sessions at a nearby taekwondo academy in Hays. “It was the community [that drew me

With her military upbringing and background in taekwondo, it seemed only natural for her to join the Kansas Army National Guard in 2011. “I had always dreamed about joining the military, Peel said, stating that her

There are times when Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will make a joke or two at his own expense — about his resume, when he’s been fired or whether people would know him when he’s out and about. On June 12, however, he had to fight back a little disappointment about mistaken identity. Phillips will need a new Super Bowl ring after the one he received at the team’s extravagant ceremony had “the wrong name on it, according to Phillips. He said that he’s happy he will receive a replacement as quickly as possible from the company — Jostens — that made rings for the Broncos. He tweeted about his disappointment. “The Ring Ceremony was great. Receiving the Ring was awesome. Seeing that they had the wrong name on my Ring, not so good. Phillips directed the league’s No. 1 defense last season and the Broncos powered through the playoffs and went on to win Super Bowl 50. In his long career, last season was the first time Phillips had been part of a Super Bowl win. Each diamond-encrusted ring — 212 diamonds in all (5.05 total carats) — has the number “50 in the middle with “World across the top of the face of the ring and “Champions across the bottom. The rings also feature three Lombardi trophies for the franchise’s three Super Bowl wins and a Broncos logo in the middle. One side of each ring says, “This one’s for Pat, in honor of team owner Pat Bowlen, and the other side bears the recipient’s name. Phillips riffed a line or two of Drake’s “Big Rings last week when asked how often he would wear the ring. “As soon as I get it, I’m going to put it on, Phillips said. “I may wear it all the time. We’ll see. It’s a really big ring. It’s a really big thing. We’ve got a really big team — as Drake would say.

parents’ success had steered her in that direction. Army Sgt. Brittany Bergman, a fellow mechanic in Bravo Company, has known Peel since they both graduated from Army basic training in 2012. “She sets a standard that females can strive to meet, Bergman said, describing Peel’s character as sincere, determined and strong. Peel emphasized the usefulness of selfdefense classes for increasing one’s confidence and personal safety as a “hard target. “Stand up for yourself, Peel said. “A lot of people are too passive. Be assertive and be vocal. Following her deployment, Peel plans to test for her 3rd degree black belt. After the necessary “time in grade she will be prepared to rank up, proving once more that she is an unparalleled, well-rounded individual. “My philosophy on life is to enjoy the present and focus on making yourself and those around you happy, and life will work itself out, she said.

TALKING WESTERN WITH MICHAEL PARÉ By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

N

ow in theaters Friday from director Timothy Woodward Jr. and Cinedigm Entertainment Group is the Western that takes no guff when it comes to being “Traded.â€? In 1880s Kansas, sharpshooter-turned rancher Clay Travis (Michael ParĂŠ) goes from a satisfied, married rancher and father to a man on a mission after the disappearance of his 17-year-old daughter, Lily. Determined to protect what little family he has left, Clay leaves his quiet ranch and heads to Wichita where, after confronting the ruthless Ty Stover (Trace Adkins), he discovers that Lily’s been traded away into an underground sex ring in Dodge City. And it’s there, with the help of an unlikely companion — hardened old barkeep Billy (Kris Kristofferson) — that Clay makes a stand to bring his daughter home, leaving a trail of gun smoke and bodies in his wake. I had the thrilling opportunity to speak with Michael ParĂŠ who plays the role of Clay Travis in the film “Traded.â€? We spoke of Westerns, the human experience and his thoughts on playing one of the most iconic characters in film. JJ: I’m excited to talk to you for several reasons. I feel sort of like I’ve grown up

Michael ParĂŠ stars with Kris Kristofferson in the new Western film “Traded.â€? He plays rancher Clay Travis on a quest to find his kidnapped daughter.

MP: Thank you, we had a really great along with you and the progression of your time making the film. It is a great story, film career. great direction and cinematography along MP: That’s really nice of you to say. JJ: Now, your latest release “Traded is with a great cast. JJ: What drew you to the film? here and it looks so good. MP: I always wanted to do a full-blown Western. It is so hard to make them, but there is resurgence towards making a Western. It’s one of the classic American genres, and I like that. I like making a movie that delves into the American mythology of Westerns. JJ: Your character, to me, is so amazing because he is that quiet cowboy, but you can feel that there is something underneath his history and the film has the potential to go in so many different directions. MP: He is a retired gunfighter, marries a retired prostitute and adopts her daughter moving out to this little ranch trying to get away from all of that to just live a quiet life on the ranch. The defecation hits the oscillation and he goes back to his old ways.

Where Your Accomplishments Are Valued!

JJ: Having the opportunity to work with Kris Kristofferson, how was that? I think I’d be dumbstruck for weeks. MP: I had worked with him on another film called “Red Maple Leaf,â€? so I had met him already. He was playing the president and I was an ambassador, so we were introduced and had a day together. But on this film, he blossoms in the Westerns! Just the way he is, I mean he’s close to 80-years-old and he hops up on a horse saying “I’d rather be riding a horse than walking down the street.â€? He was more comfortable on the horse than just standing around. He is very open, you ask him a simple question and he gives a direct answer. I asked him if he writes with a piano and he said, “No, the songs just come to me all at once. It’s not like I have a technique or format. I strum a guitar and its there.â€? Documentary tells story of the USS Indianapolis in the crew’s words Troy Nunley was 17 years old when he left the farm and joined the Navy. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis (CA 35), and as he stood on the pier at Mare Island he couldn’t believe any man-made thing could be so massive. “I’d never seen a tractor that big, he says. The recollections of Nunley and over a hundred others are the main thread of “The USS Indianapolis: The Legacy Project, a documentary directed and produced by Sara Vladic who spent over ten years putting it together. Her choice to let the surviving crew members tell their own story has resulted in a powerful film, one that tells the story of a star-crossed surface combatant while also capturing the timeless themes of survival, courage, and the fight to set the record straight on behalf of the man who led them. The Indianapolis was very active in the early years of World War II, fighting in campaigns across the Pacific Ocean, from the Aleutian Islands and Iwo Jima where the ship was close enough to see what was going on ashore. “They said they’re raising the flag, and I said big deal and walked away, says Adolfo Celaya, who was a fireman’s apprentice aboard the big battle cruiser. “How did I know it was going to be famous?

As the ship was being repaired at Mare Island, the crew was given 30 days of leave, and when it was over many of them returned fearing what the next leg of their deployment might bring. “The last day I was home my mother was sitting on the front porch, and she said, ‘I know something’s wrong. You don’t act like yourself, Cleatus LeBow says. “And I said, ‘I’m dreading going back this time. The Indianapolis stopped by Hunter’s Point on the way out to sea and picked up a large crate that was heavily guarded and bolted to the passageway outside of the commanding officer’s cabin. Rumors started to fly among the crew about what the mysterious cargo might be. Congress sends mixed signals on female draft Despite key votes in Congress, it remains unclear whether the United States is closer to a historic move requiring women to register for the military draft. The Senate was wrapping up an annual defense bill that calls for opening the Selective Service to women despite opposition from some conservative lawmakers. Meanwhile, the House reached an opposite outcome in May when Republicans successfully blocked a measure integrating the draft. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle cried foul, claiming the issue did not get adequate debate. Now, as Congress pushes ahead with its annual defense budget, the House and Senate face brokering a compromise between lawmakers who are deeply divided over requiring women between 18-25 years old to register with Selective Service — and potentially forcing them to the front lines of future wars. “I am the father of two daughters. Women can do anything they put their minds to ... But the idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat to my mind makes little to no sense, said Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. “I could not vote for a bill that did so, particularly a bill that did so without public debate. Cruz was among conservatives who rallied around a proposal by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, to strip the draft language from the National Defense Authorization Act in the Senate. But lawmakers never got to weigh in. Senators agreed to move forward on the massive $602-billion military policy

Think the stress of military life makes it harder to sleep? It’s probably not just your imagination. Findings from a new study announced June 8 show that military spouses are getting below the average amount of sleep recommended for adults — and that sleep quality is even worse for spouses of currently deployed service members. “It suggests that sleep problems are really a very salient feature in military spouses’ lives and interfere with daytime functioning,â€? said Wendy Troxel, the study’s senior investigator and a senior behavioral and social scientist at the RAND Corporation. “The types of stress military families endure ‌ all of these take resilience, and when you’re not sleeping well, it’s hard to be resilient.â€? SAN DIEGO -- Capt. Karl O. Thomas was relieved by Capt. Douglas C. Verissimo as commanding officer of aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) during a change of command ceremony May 31 on the flight deck in the carrier’s homeport of San Diego. Rear Adm. James T. Loeblein, commander, Carrier Strike Group One, presided over the ceremony. Before being relieved of command, Thomas thanked each of Carl Vinson’s “Gold Eagle Warriors for their unwavering dedication to the Navy’s mission by getting the ship ready to deploy on time. “You should be extremely proud of all you have accomplished, and you should be even more excited for what is about to come, said Thomas. “Whether on deployment or during our shipyard availability, you rose to each challenge with a positive, ‘get to yes’ attitude. Vet says he lost job after lowering flag When veteran Allen Thornwell lowered his employer’s American flag to half-staff on Memorial Day, he says he did not think to ask permission or consider the possibility that he had done anything wrong. Instead, the 29-year-old former Marine, who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, says he was thinking about his country, the meaning of the holiday, and his best friend, Geoff, another Marine who had killed himself two years ago after returning stateside. On the day after, Thornwell was fired. A manager at the placement service that arranged the vet’s job at Time Warner Cable in Charlotte, N.C., told him that the company was disturbed by Thornwell’s “passion for the flag and (his) political affiliation. Thornwell said he remains in shock over what happened. “I’m not even mad right now, he says. “I don’t know what kind of moral compass you need to fire a veteran on Memorial Day for lowering the flag. A Time Warner Cable spokesman confirmed that the former Marine “was no longer under contract with the company but declined further comment. Thornwell said he landed the job through Principal Solutions Group, a technology-based employment service. Thornwell’s placement manager, Nicki Warren, said she was not allowed to discuss personnel matters. Charlotte attorney Murph Archibald, whom Thornwell called after the incident, says his client should have never lost his job. “It’s disgraceful, says Archibald, a Vietnam vet. “He didn’t do anything wrong. He’s a veteran working on Memorial Day who corrected what he thought was a disrespectful flying of the American flag ... I would have taken it down myself. Whether Time Warner was improperly displaying the flag during the country’s annual tribute to its dead veterans is a matter of debate. The U.S. Flag Code, which offers guidance on how to fly the flag during holidays, says the banner should be at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day then returned to its normal position. Thornwell said the incident took place around 2:30 p.m. Thornwell, who was discharged in 2014, said he was aware of the holiday protocol but was moved to lower the flag anyway. He wishes now that he had asked permission. “I didn’t think of it as the property of Time Warner Cable, he says. “It’s everybody’s flag. FLAG, continued on Page 13

The remaining survivors, always of a mind that their skipper got a raw deal from the Navy, kept pushing for legislation that would clear his name. The finally found a champion in Cdr. Bill Toti, the CO of the new USS Indianapolis, a nuclear submarine. Toti invited the survivors to join him at the commissioning ceremony for his sub, and after sitting down with them and realizing their enduring love and respect for their skipper, he led an effort to get the Navy to exonerate Capt. draft integration last month with its version of the annual defense budget bill. In an unusual move, the Republicancontrolled Rules Committee removed language opening the draft to women from the NDAA just before a final floor vote. The chairman of the committee, Rep. Pete Sessions, of Texas, is an opponent of integration and had also filed an amendment to remove it from the bill. The committee scuttled any further debate. Democrats had been hopeful after the House Armed Services Committee — in a surprise move — had voted in favor of women in the draft. Normally that would have put the issue to a vote before the entire House. “Now, Republicans have used a procedural trick to overturn a decision by members of the House regarding women’s equality in the Selective Service, said Rep. The story is rugged and relatable, the cinematography is beautiful and every element draws the viewer in. The costuming is killer (pun intended) also but not just for the guys and their hats and spurs but the women in the full skirts and bonnets as well. I truly enjoyed the feel of it all. This is a film with heart and a clear deep respect for the American Western on film. The cast makes this story believable as each actor grabs on to their character and immerses it in the old west. BUILDING HOMES WHILE REBUILDING LIVES On a chilly May morning, the city of Murrieta dispatched a firetruck to a new home. Dozens of men, women and children congregated the driveway. The sounds of Rolling Thunder could be heard in the distance. As if on cue, the wind picked up and the huge American flag streaming from the ladder of the firetruck began to wave. American Legion Riders escorted wounded Army veteran Sgt. Nicholas Mendes to his new specially adapted home, and the community was there to welcome him. This is the work of Homes for our Troops. HFOT builds mortgage-free, specially adapted homes across the United States for those who have been severely injured in theater of combat since September 11, 2001. The non-profit’s purpose is to assist wounded warriors with the complex process of integrating back into society. Mendes, who was a gunner with the 10th Mountain, 3rd Brigade, is one of 214 veterans to thus far be living in one of these homes. On April 30, 2011, an IED detonated beneath his vehicle in Sangsar, Afghanistan. The explosion, set off by a 1200-pound command wire device, caused multiple fractures to his vertebrae and rendered him paralyzed from the neck down. Mendes had previously served in Iraq in 2008. After being presented with the key to his

ented group of men and women who are either in homes or that we are building homes for. The whole idea is to get them back going to school, back into the work force, raising families. Since 2010 we’ve had over 100 children born to families living in our homes. So it is about the next generation and moving forward. We have a tremendous amount of successes out there.

new home, Mendes’ wife held the microphone up to his mouth so he could address the audience of well-wishers. “Bear with me, I didn’t write anything down — because my arms don’t work.â€? Mendes joked. “It’s just crazy looking back on everything, this all started with a Google search, and then putting in an application to a foundation that I didn’t know if they’d ever write me back‌â€? Not only did they write him back and

build him a home, Homes for our Troops is working with Mendes to allow him to reclaim his independence. The adapted features in his home remove much of the burden from his wife and family and allow him to focus on recovery and his plans to pursue a career in real estate. “These men and women are not looking for pity. They’re looking to rebuild their lives. said Bill Ivy, Executive Director of HFOT. “We have an extremely tal-

new crew for the first time. “This is a mighty warship, and with her just out of the maintenance availability, we are going to be the most relevant aircraft carrier in the fleet for the upcoming years, said Verissimo. I’m honored and excited to take the reins and have this opportunity. I will do my best to build on the successes of Captain Thomas and the crew of Carl Vinson. Prior to assuming command, Verissimo served as commanding officer aboard USS New Orleans (LPD 18). Thomas was recently selected for promotion to rear admiral and will report to Commander Naval Air Forces while awaiting further assignment by Chief of Naval Operations. The Carl Vinson Strike Group is scheduled to deploy on a Western Pacific deployment in 2017.
