Marines may put women in West Coast combat training The U.S. Marine Corps is considering whether to allow women to attend combat training in Southern California, which currently admits only male Marines, according to a report. Marine Corps officials told the Associated Press the shift could occur as early as next spring, which would let women attend combat training at Camp Pendleton. Currently, female Marines can only get combat training in Parris Island, South Carolina, while men are trained at both locations. Top officials are also considering a plan to expand boot camp options for women. Today, all female recruits attend boot camp at Parris Island, and male recruits attend their initial training either there or in San Diego. The Marine Corps is the only service that separates men and women for parts of boot camp, a differentiation that has earned criticism from lawmakers. The Marine Corps is also the only service to allow half of its recruits to go through boot camp without female recruits. Women make up 8.4 percent of the Marine Corps, and the service has been examining integration of male and female Marine recruits for more than a year.
WOMEN IN MILITARY COMBAT ROLES As the U.S. catches up, questions remain

s the U.S. moves to open up combat positions to women, it’s catching up with other countries that have been doing it for years. But the experience and in these countries including Russia, North Korea, South Korea, Canada, Australia, France, Israel and more suggests that access to combat jobs doesn’t lead directly to equal treatment within the ranks. In Israel, most men and women perform compulsory military service. The Israel Defense Force plays a number of roles that go far beyond just defending the country. Traditions break down fast during times of war. History is full of examples where women assume dramatic new roles that

PRESEASON QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DEFENSE CHARGERS REPORT
by Art Garcia Jr.
With two weeks of training camp, some inter-squad scrimmages with the Rams and its first preseason game at the StubHub Center under their belt, the Chargers have three main questions about their defense as the season opener against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 11 quickly approaches. In this issue we will focus on the defensive tackle, linebacker and defensive back positions — three areas of concern where injuries to key players took its toll last season as the team lost seven out of its last nine games and finished the season on a five-game losing streak. Heading into the NFL draft, speculation had General Manager Tom Telesco using his early picks on upgrading the safety and cornerback positions. However, Telesco didn’t address the defense until day three of the draft when he selected safety Rayshawn Jenkins, cornerback/ safety Desmond King and defensive tackle Issac Rochell in the fourth, fifth and sev- Chargers linebacker Jatavis Brown had a banner rookie season last year, despite suffering a knee injury that kept him out of five games. enth round, respectfully. teammates until his injury in week 10. The Padres were the first major league team to wear “camo uniforms.
For the Padres, Sunday is about more than the uniform By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress
O
nly a small slice of the American population has connections to those actually serving, which can cause a disconnect between the civilian and military populations. Not so in Major League Baseball, especially with the San Diego Padres — a team who has a long history of supporting and honoring the military. Retired Admiral J. J. Quinn, a 1974 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, who served for 30 years, is now the Padres Military Affairs Advisor. He told how the Padres had the first and now have the largest military outreach program in baseball. “We were the first team to wear cam-
ouflage uniforms, and over time, transitioned to the Marine desert brown digital pattern. Then two years ago we started to wear the Navy blue digital version, he said. “Every Sunday the team wears one or the other depending on the theme. On any particular Sunday, the Marine recruits due to graduate are honored in the fourth inning. It is their first opportunity to wear their Marine uniform and sing their hymn. “This year we also had a Padres Alumni Group play a softball game against an active duty Navy team, and on Sept. 21 they will play the Marines on family day at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the day before recruit graduation. These watches do not need to be in running and/ or working condition. Pink gold and platinum are very sought after. Men’s watches made before 1960 are best. Shape affects price. Square, rectangles and oddly shaped watches bring more than round ones. Complicated watches, chronographs, stop watches (indicated by small dials on the side of the face & two small buttons on each side of the winding stem) bring more. Calendars — watches with additional dials or windows that display day, month, date and sometimes moonphases & others including time zone, skeleton, doctors watches, chiming, complicated and musical watches are the best.

n theaters from writer/director Taylor Sheridan and The Weinstein Company is the mystery and murder on “Wind River. Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) is a Fish and Game Agent who sometimes must hunt down animals that kill ranchers’ herds. While following the tracks of a mountain lion, Lambert comes across human tracks. Following them he finds the body of a young girl. On Native American lands, Lambert calls Ben (Graham Greene) the local law enforcement who also calls federal officer Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen). Clearly not ready to take on a case like this, she asks Lambert to assist in finding out who is responsible. Lambert agrees but only because the young girl, Natalie (Kelsey Asbille) is the daughter of his dear friend Martin (Gil Birmingham). He understands his pain all to which makes him promise Martin that the murderer will be caught. Banner looks to Lambert who begins to put the pieces together but in an unconventional way. What becomes clear is that the truth with far more shocking than anyone could imagine. Renner as Lambert is an introspective person but that’s brought on by tragedy of

filled with disappointments and lies which puts Banner immediately at odds with them. Greene as Ben is the law enforcement that has a wicked and biting sense of humor. Feeling as if the case is going to get mishandled, he is with Lambert almost every step of the way to ensure justice is done — even if that justice is tribal. I love that Greene is in this film and with a face that doesn’t give anything away, he adds to the mysteriousness of it all. Birmingham as Martin has another fantastic role of a father dealing with not only the death of his daughter but feeling helpless about their situation all together. He knows that Lambert understands him and knows between his friend and Ben — something will get done. This isn’t Birmingham’s first go around with a Taylor Sheridan film playing Alberto Parker in “Hell or High Water, another amazing role. Other cast include Julia Jones as Wilma, Teo Briones as Casey, Apesanahkwat as Dan Crowheart, Tantoo Cardinal as Alice Crowheart, Eric Lange as Dr. Whitehurst, Althea Sam as Annie, Tokala Clifford as Sam Littlefeather, Martin Sensmeier as Chip, Tyler Laracca as Frank, Blake Robbins as Tim, Norman Lehnert as Dale, James Jordan as Pete, Matthew Del Negro as Dillon, Hugh Dillon as Curtis, Ian Bohen as Evan, Austin Grant as Carl and Jon Bernthal as Matt. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Wind River four tubs of popcorn out of five. First of all, the cinematographer is amazing set up in the wilderness and harsh setting of winter. It sets the stage for the harshness of the story that is being told drawing you in completely. There is an innate sadness in it and once the story takes off, it becomes clear that there is another story wrapped in. Renner and Olsen are in it completely character wise and it is such a pleasure to see Greene, Apesanahkwat and Crowheart brought to the screen. Portraying Native American characters called for one thing absolutely — that they should be portrayed by Native American actors to which I give Sheridan much appreciation. That story is Native American women are attacked so much more than anyone has ever been made aware of. That becomes clear by the end of the film along with the injustice and hopelessness those living on the reservations live with. From drugs to the taking of their land by, in this case, an oil company, Sheridan makes it clear that none of this should continue to be ignored. “Wind River has a few bumps here and there but nothing that bothers me in the slightest. The performances stand out and the story is harsh and believable from start to finish. Capturing it all in the rough setting gives the film another character that doesn’t need to say a word — it is quite clear. In the end — nothing is harder to track than the truth! XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t OFXT!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN
Marine aids in rescue of 7-year-old boy, inspired to make a difference B y Lance Corporal Andy Martinez III Marine Expeditionary Force
CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan — Cries of a desperate mother and the sight of a child’s limp body on the beach alarmed Capt. Justin Griffis, who up until that point was spending a normal day snorkeling with his family at Maeda Flats in Okinawa, Japan, July 23. Upon hearing the cries, Griffis shoved through the mass of people that had gathered, and was immediately drawn to the lifeless body of a small, 7-year old Japanese boy. “My first thoughts were ‘They need help, how can I help,’ said Griffis, a current operations and training officer with Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. “There was a moment where I thought ‘Oh my God, what do I do.’ but that thought went away the moment it arrived. That’s when my training kicked in. Griffis, like most Marines took a CPR class and knew what had to be done. However, after his initial shock wore off, Griffis noticed a woman already administering CPR to the boy. Rachel Gruber, an emergency room nurse with U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa
in Camp Foster, was already administering chest compressions in accordance with CPR procedures. Without hesitation, Griffis began to give mouth-to-mouth to the boy. “Every time I gave emergency breathing, I was getting water, vomit and blood back, said Griffis, a native of Arvada, Colorado. “It’s not pretty, it’s scary, it’s disgusting, and it’s horrifying. For a minute I couldn’t help to think, what if this was my daughter here. What if my daughter was in his position and needed help. The boy desperately needed to get to a hospital, so when Rachel and Griffis noticed a man holding a boogie board they sprang into action. No sooner had they spotted the man then Griffis’ wife, Jen, raced towards him. Using the board as a makeshift stretcher, they transported the boy swiftly and carefully away from the beach, eventually reaching the emergency responders who’d arrived on scene. With no response from the boy, the team struggled to dry his wet body in order to attach the automated external defibrillator and send an electric shock to his heart. After several attempts with the AED, they loaded him onto the ambulance,

where emergency medical technicians raced to the nearest hospital, leaving Griffis and the others in stunned silence. Adrenalin gone, Griffis snapped back to reality when he caught sight of his family. “My wife and two kids were trucking up the hill with all of the stuff we brought to the beach, Griffis said. “It got real to me at that point; this could have easily been one of them if I kept my eyes off of them. My daughter is little; her and [the boy] are about the same size. For a minute there I thought ‘that wasn’t [he] that was her.’ After EMT picked up the boy, he was immediately taken to a hospital nearby. He was recently transferred to a hospital in mainland Japan, where his family resides. The harrowing incident drove Griffis to take action and inspired him. Griffis got with Red Cross and his unit’s Family Readiness Officer to develop a CPR class for not only service members but their spouses as well. “You never know when you’re going to be the one who needs help, said Griffis. “Sometimes, you need to lend a helping hand to someone else — so have the knowledge, have the skill set. Going through the training myself prepared me to act, but I still need a refresh to know the latest and greatest.

One significant female contribution was recognized on June 16, 2005, when Sgt. Ann Hester was awarded the Silver Star for action during a firefight that took place outside Baghdad. This was the first All-Star in U.S. military history awarded to a woman. A 2014–2015 experiment by the Marine Corps with a gender–integrated combat union found that women were twice as likely to suffer injuries significant enough to remove them from duty, and that women’s shooting accuracy was much less than that of men in simulated combat situations. Female soldiers were also found to have lower performance in the basic combat tasks like negotiating obstacles and removing wounded troops from the battlefield.
oring and thanking those that make up the military community in San Diego, any active duty, dependent, retired, veteran and civil servant gets a 50 percent discount for any available ticket on Sundays, and a 25 percent discount for any other home game. It is not just the organization who feels this bond, but also the players who also are actively involved with those serving. Many were willing to speak about their connections. Tony Gwynn Jr., a retired Padre outfielder and current broadcaster, saw “from an early age the love and respect my dad, (Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn) had for those serving. When I played here, I was super excited to wear the military uniform. I think it was a way for me to show my gratitude. “My dad always instilled in me that there is a big difference between a hero on the baseball field and one on the battlefield. After the Alumni Softball game, where they whipped our butts, I spoke to many and realized they are just like us with the same joys, dislikes and family concerns. We need to put a face on the individual serving. Glenn Hoffman, the Padre third base coach, said he feels “very proud when I put on the camouflage military uniform. I think we are saluting them with that gesture, and hope they understand we think they are pretty awesome. “My dad was a Marine back in the Korean War, and we realized how proud he was to serve. I remember as a young boy how he taught us the correct way to fold the flag and never let it touch the ground. My brother Trevor (the Hall of Fame relief pitcher) flies the Marine flag in front of his house. When it gets frayed my mom gets him a new one. While playing here he would feed the Marines, and on Christmas we hand out gifts at Camp Pendleton. I know I can relate to them on a small scale because they are part of a team as we are, making sure we have each other’s backs, while encouraging and pushing each other. Will Myers, the Padre first baseman and former All Star, thinks, “It is great for our baseball community to give something back to the military. I enjoy meeting and interacting with those in the military when they come out to the game. My dad was a Marine so I feel a huge honor when we put on the Sunday military uniform, a symbolism for showing our support. Recently he visited the Marine Corps Air Station where he flew an F-18 simulator and felt that was pretty cool. Craig Stammen, Padre relief pitcher, is privileged to have “played for two military towns, San Diego and Washington, D.C. I am lucky to be around so many people who are serving. “I hope we, as Americans, never forget that they put their nation first. When I wear the Sunday uniform I think about my childhood days and how we all wanted to be in the military. Now I think about my two college roommates at the University of Dayton, one went into the Army and the other into the Marines. They played base-

This has been, and will continue to be, a major problem. The regulations are routinely violated, and everyone in the Army knows this! Finally, there is the argument that by not incorporating women into combat, the American government is failing to tap into another source of soldiers for military combat operations. This argument claims that the government is creating a military that treats women as second-class citizens and not equals of men!

New Navy secretary welcomes ‘any patriot that wants to serve’ Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer visited Naval Station Norfolk for the first time August 10, where he pledged that America would defend itself and its allies against aggression from North Korea. Tensions between the US and North Korea have escalated amid threats from Kim Jong Un to lob missiles near the American territory of Guam, which is home to naval and Air Force bases. President Donald Trump ramped up warnings of “fire and fury should the dictator put his plan into action. Spencer, who was sworn in as the Navy’s 76th secretary Aug. 3, declined to comment on the Navy’s preparations in the Pacific. “We just hope that Korea stops acting the way it does, Spencer said. “We’re going to defend ourselves; we are going to defend our allies. They should know that, and we hope that we can have conversations and de-escalate. Spencer’s comments came after he toured the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and Virginia-class submarine USS John Warner and named people, capabilities, and process as priorities for his new role. Spencer joined the Marine Corps in 1976 after graduating from Rollins College with a bachelor’s degree in economics and flew the service’s H-46 helicopter. He attained the rank of captain before leaving in 1981 for a career in finance, according to
sailors by their rate, or job title, in favor of rank. That decision was reversed after a storm of fierce opposition. During his July 11 confirmation hearing, Spencer said he opposed the use of the services as “a petri dish for social experiments, instead saying it should be left to the Pentagon to develop policy. A little more than two weeks later and in a series of tweets, Trump said he was banning transgender military personnel from service, stunning an unprepared Pentagon. Spencer said Aug. 10 he would follow
policies developed by the Pentagon at the direction of the White House, adding context to his “petri dish statement to mean that no service secretary “should go off and do experiments on their own. But Spencer did not directly say whether the thousands of transgender service members on active duty and in the reserves should be kicked out. “As I’ve said before, any patriot that wants to serve and meets all the requirements should be able to serve in our military, Spencer said.

“Give me a sentence about a public servant, said the teacher. The small boy wrote: “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant. fishing on a lake one day, when Jesus walked across the water and joined them in the boat. When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first guy asked, humbly, “Jesus, I’ve suffered from back pain ever since I took shrapnel in the Vietnam War...could you help me? “Of course, my son, Jesus said, and when he touched the man’s back, he felt relief for the first time in years. The second man, who wore very thick glasses and had a hard time reading and driving, asked if Jesus could do anything about his eyesight. Jesus smiled, removed the man’s glasses and tossed them in the lake. When they hit the water, the man’s eyes cleared, and he could see everything distinctly. When Jesus turned to heal the union worker, the guy put his hands up and cried, defensively, “DON’T TOUCH ME! I’m on long-term disability!

He and newly minted Melvin Ingram, who’s converting from linebacker, could give J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney serious competition as the league’s top end tandem.
