n 2008, presidential candidate John McCain bravely proposed a health-care reform that Fortune magazine said was a giant step toward “laissez faire liberty in health care. He wanted to empower consumers to find the best health care and even end the tax break for employer-sponsored plans. In 2015, McCain joined all but one other GOP senator in voting to repeal Obamacare. The next year he ran an ad in his primary campaign against a Tea Party Republican claiming he was “leading the fight to stop Obamacare. That ad helped him win 51 percent of the primary vote.

Just this year, McCain introduced a bill to “fully repeal Obamacare and replace it with a “free-market approach that strengthens the quality and accessibility of care. Then, with a Republican in the White House ready to sign repeal, McCain faced a choice on the Senate floor. He could vote with all but two of his GOP colleagues for “a skinny repeal bill and get to a conference committee, where negotiators from the House and Senate could devise a bill that might pass both chambers. Or he could effectively leave Obamacare in place, dooming any realistic effort at curbing it given the uniform Democratic opposition to any real reform. McCain sided with the status quo, killing the “skinny repeal. Journalists rushed to gush over his vote, cast only a few days after a surgery to remove a dangerous brain tumor. The New Yorker’s take was typical: “Throughout his political life, John McCain has for many reasons enjoyed

remember when...

bipartisan respect and even reverence: his independence of mind (usually), his candor (usually), his decency, his love of country. McCain’s stated reason for killing reform was that the bill in front of him “fell short of our promise to repeal and replace Obamacare with meaningful reform. True enough, but this is a perfect example of letting the perfect be the enemy of the better. This failure is especially enraging. It’s not that 49 senators were willing to advance the process by passing a flawed bill, just one vote shy of the (temporary) finish line. It’s not even that Susan Collins — who was never serious about Obamacare repeal, and voted accordingly — stubbornly refused play ball at every turn. No, it’s the decisions by Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski and McCain to willfully and deliberately derail the repeal train before a final legislative product SICK, continued on Page 14

Christopher Nolan tells the story of the Miracle of Dunkirk masterfully in his made-for-IMAX film “Dunkirk.

‘DUNKIRK’ A CINEMATIC, EMOTIONAL FEAT By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

In theaters from writer/director Christopher Nolan and Warner Brothers is a story that tells of the dangers, the ravages and the bravery of those at “Dunkirk. Let’s begin with a tad bit of history. It is World War II in 1940, and the Germans have pushed their soldiers into Northern France and Belgium. Allied forces are trapped on the beach as bombardment comes from both land and sea. There are almost 400,000 troops on the shores — with no where to go. The larger military vessels were under constant attack and sunk with devastating losses of life. Across the channel were smaller boats consisting of fishing boats, mer-

chant marines, personal boats, speed boats, ferry’s and even life boats that took to the call to rescue soldiers. More than 800 of these boats made it to the beaches of Dunkirk, and the mass evacuation would come to be known as the Miracle of Dunkirk. Christopher Nolan has brought this incredible story to the screen and it is grand, beautiful and heart stopping. The audience is taken into the story from land, air and sea as filming began in Dunkirk, France. In his style, “Dunkirk is filmed in IMAX 70 mm film with the score of the incredible Hans Simmer. On the beach, Commander Bolton (Kenneth Branagh) is the ranking officer attempting to get the men off the beaches of Dunkirk along with Col. Winnart (James D’Arcy). As each ship leaves, it

is met with either U-boat fire or planes dropping artillery either killing the men or putting them back in the water. Soldiers Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) and Alex (Harry Styles) attempt time and time again to find a way off the beach. Finally making it onto a ship, they do not get far before they are back in the water and headed to shore where bombs are going off. In the air are Collins (Jack Lowden) and Farrier (Tom Hardy), two Royal Air Force pilots who are hell bent on keeping the enemy off their fellow soldiers. Their fuel consumption is of concern, but they will not stop until they take out the danger. Across the channel, Mr. Dawson (Mark Rylance), son Peter (Tom Glynn-Carney) ‘DUNKIRK,’ continued on Page 11

The Tugboat Alma helped rescue the crew of the Montebello in 1941 out of Morro Bay.

Morro Bay and the sinking of the Montebello in WWII

O

n a recent travel writing assignment along California’s Coastal Highway 1 Discovery Route, I was amazed to uncover a piece of little known history relating to California’s role in World War II and, perhaps, a partial answer to a stain on FDR’s presidential legacy.

The tugboat Alma was one of the rescue vessels which picked up crew members in two of the lifeboats. The Alma is now part of the Morro Bay Maritime Association and displayed in town on the Embarcadero. Post Pearl Harbor and the sub attacks, Morro Bay and Rock was used by military recruits for ship boarding practice, beach landings and assault training. Can it be a coincidence that, after by Howard Hian this enemy activity in U.S. waters off the coast of California, FDR issued an executive order on Feb. 19,1942, leading to the unfortunate internment of Japanese-Americans?

THREE CONCERNS ABOUT THE BOLTS OFFENSE CHARGERS REPORT

by Art Garcia Jr.

A

s the organization prepares to open training camp as the Los Angeles Chargers for the first time since its inaugural season of 1960, there are many questions surrounding the team on both sides of the ball. The focus in this issue will be on the offense, where General Manager Tom Telesco made the biggest impact to the roster during the offseason via the draft and free agency. While Telesco and the front office have received high grades for their personnel decisions, there are mainly three position concerns surrounding the offense — wide receiver, offensive line and running back.

Wide receiver

Although reports have Keenan Allen fully recovered from the season-ending knee injury he suffered in the opening game last season, drafting Clemson receiver Mike Williams with the seventh pick in the first round must be looked at as insurance if Allen isn’t 100 percent. There is no question Allen has the talent, skills

and mindset to be considered one of the best receivers in the NFL. However, there is an old adage that states, “The best ability is availability, and the fact that Allen has played in only nine games in the past two years has to be a concern.

!"#$% &'#&()*

As for Williams, reports the back injury he suffered during the first day of OTAs (Organized Team Activities) could be season-ending only exacerbates the injury bug that has plagued this team the past four years. A first-team, ALL-ACC pick in 2016 and a key member of last year’s National Champion team, Williams is denying reports the back injury will force him to miss his rookie season. The good news for the team and quarterback Philip Rivers is there are other weapons in Rivers’ arsenal for him to throw to. In addition to Travis Benjamin, Tyrell Williams and Dontrelle Inman, Rivers still has future Hall-of-Famer Antonio Gates and Hunter Henry (2016 NFL All-Rookie Team) solidifying the tight end position.

prise because of his injury issues throughout his career. Many scouts believe Forrest Lamp and Dan Feeney, drafted in the second and third round, respectfully, could challenge for the starting guard positions as rookies. It might not be sexy, but the position battles along the O-Line during training camp will be one to keep an eye on. In addition to Lamp and Freeney, rookie T Sam Tevi and second-year players Max Tuerk and Donavon Clark (neither of whom played as a rookie) will push returning veterans Matt Slauson (C-G), Spencer Pulley (C), Kenny Wiggins (G-T), Chris Hairston (T) and Joe Barksdale (RT) for playing time. For the first time in a number of years it appears the line has a nice mixture of youth and veterans to not only battle for a startOffensive line With Rivers being the key to success, it’s ing position along the line, but also help a no-brainer as to why Telesco had to up- keep Rivers from taking the same poundgrade the line. WOODLEY PLAYS IT SAFE IN WIN OVER MAIA By Andrew Richardson MMA Mania

first half of the fifth round were some defended takedowns from “T-Wood. Maia attempted the high kick that Dominick Cruz and myself were begging for, but he was out of range. For whatever it’s worth, Maia landed a few straight lefts, while his opponent went to the body with decent accuracy. The crowd chanted boring, and they were not wrong. This was a miserable fight to watch, but it was a smart showing from Woodley. His takedown defense was ironclad, as Maia never even came remotely close to finishing a shot after his first attempt. On the feet, Woodley was quite miserly regarding his own offense, but there’s no doubt that Woodley did more damage on the feet.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight ground fighters Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia collided July 29 at UFC 214 inside Honda Center in Anaheim. Just a few days before his year anniversary of winning the strap, Woodley was attempting to defend it for the third time. If “T-Wood could come out on top once again, it would finally set him up for the high-profile Georges St-Pierre fight he had been working toward. SAN DIEGO (NNS) — The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt held a change of command ceremony on the flight deck, July 27. Capt. Craig “Clap Clapperton was relieved by Capt. Carlos A. Sardiello as commanding officer of Theodore Roosevelt. Guest speaker Rear Adm. Jay Bynum, commander, Chief of Naval Air Training, praised the achievements of the Theodore Roosevelt and its crew under Clapperton’s leadership. “The accomplishments of the USS Theodore Roosevelt under the command of Capt. Clapperton are unprecedentCapt. Sardiello ed. He has contributed to the storied legacy of the ship affectionately known as ‘America’s Big Stick’ and readied her and her crew for any obstacle that they might face. During his speech, Clapperton attributed his success as commanding officer to his crew, known as the “Rough Riders. “The challenges this crew has faced over the last two years are truly extraordinary, he said. “The men and women of Theodore Roosevelt are exceptional warriors and leaders. Their hard work made our Navy readier and made the world a safer place. I feel truly privileged to have had the opportunity to serve as the commanding officer of the Big Stick and to operate with this incredible team. Clapperton assumed command of Theodore Roosevelt June 2015 and successfully completed an eight-month, around-the-world combat deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. TR executed 1,812 combat sorties, totaling 10,618 flight hours, and delivered more than one million pounds of ordnance on enemy targets. These achievements led to the “Rough Riders earning the 2016 Ramage Award for excellence in operations. Following deployment and a homeport shift, Clapperton directed the integration of 1,400 newly-assigned personnel as part of unprecedented three-carrier hull swap. He then led his crew in completion of the largest Planned Incremental Availability package ever assigned to a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, successfully and on time. “Naval aviation is the ultimate team sport, and a nuclear-powered aircraft SKIPPER, continued on Page 15

and their family friend George (Barry Keoghan) take off for Dunkirk. Knowing what needs doing, Dawson has the knowledge not only of the Channel but of how to handle the enemy. The crew finds their first shell-shocked soldier (Cillian Murphy) sitting on the turned over hull of a sunken ship. D’Arcy as Col. Winnart follows by example keeping the soldiers as calm as possible. From air, sea and land the struggle for survival is moment-by-moment under circumstances that are unimaginable. I have to start with Mark Rylance as Mr. Dawson. There is something about this actor that I believe from the moment he speaks. As this character, Rylance is the strong silent type who knows what needs to be done and doesn’t need to be told how to do it. Watching how he explains things to Peter and George, this character gets every ounce of the audience’s trust. When they have their own problem on board, Mr. Dawson keeps the atmosphere calm in the emotional storm. Hardy as pilot Farrier is straight on point, and although I had a Bane moment (please stop putting stuff over his face!), it is a minor point because everything you need to know is found in this actor’s eyes. The message is clear: “Do what you must to save as many as you can, and his ac-

‘Dunkirk’ is so powerful it will leave you drained physically and emotionally.

tions are evident. Lowden as pilot Collins is equally as powerful to watch and gives a suspenseful scene that needs to be talked about later. Whitehead as Tommy and Styles as Alex are two very young men that are trying anything to get off the beach. It just breaks the heart to see these two young men and as clever as they are, it is living from one moment to the next. Well done performances by both of these young men. Branagh as Commander Bolton stands tall for his men, even when he knows that the clock is ticking — literally. Having to change tactics quickly, he is the strong face for the men to follow. Murphy as the shocked soldier is intense and frightening because of his unpredictability. GlynnCarney is strong as Peter as he learns

doubt in every flicker of film of it being anything else. Nolan meshes the inescapability of war with the human story with a cast that gives the audience a heart stopper that will not stop from start to finish. I tell you now, the film is so powerful and strong that you will leave the theater drained both physically and emotionally. The visceral moments that take us so deep that one moment during a water scene I realized I was holding my breath! Hans Zimmer brings on an epic score that will not let us all get away. At the screening, I saw for myself what an amazing score does to people. There is a moment where a clock is ticking, which by the way is the sound of Christopher Nolan’s watch, and people were putting their hands on their chest or over their mouths knowing something was coming. “Dunkirk is cinematically stunning and beautiful, which seems weird to say considering it is a war film with human causalities. In that is the exquisite gift that director Nolan seems to have and I hope he never changes it. His films give us a duality we are forced to reckon with. “Dunkirk gives us that with the defeat of battle but the pyrrhic victor of humanity. In the end — when 400,000 men couldn’t get home, home came for them!

the price of war along with Keoghan as George playing a character I can’t even begin to talk about. Other performances that need recognition are Damien Bonnard as the French Soldier, Aneurin Barnard as Gibson, Lee Armstrong as Grenadier, Will Attenborough as Second Lieutenant, Richard Sanderson as Heinkel Spotter and so many, many more. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Dunkirk five tubs of popcorn out of five. There isn’t a massive amount of dialogue, and I didn’t need it. The ensemble of actors brought out every emotion without saying much at all. “Dunkirk is an intense experience as the volume, literally, of the film is pure Jeri Jacquin is the Movie Maven. WOODELY Continued from Page 5

Next up for Woodley is St-Pierre. As for Maia, his ground game is about 99 percent of his offense, and he was never able to get that going. On the feet, Maia was too predictable with his left hand, which landed with reasonable consistency but also got Maia countered often. Personally, I thought Maia’s strategy was disappointing. He burnt all of his energy shooting for obvious takedowns. If he had been a bit more patient in the stand up — and thrown more damn high kicks! — there was a real chance that he could pick up rounds as Woodley gave them away. Woodley can be shut down by pressure and takedown attempts, but Maia never really gave himself a chance to win the decision. Tyron Woodley won a clear decision win, much to the dismay of the crowd. Will Woodley be able to defeat “GSP?

A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children began discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back, said one youngster. “No, said another. “He’s just for good luck. A third child brought the argument to a close with this comment: “They use the dogs, she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrants.

A rookie police officer was out for his first ride in a cruiser with an experienced partner. A call came in telling them to disperse some people who were loitering. even existed to truly burn. It’s difficult to decide which senator’s actions are more indefensible. Murkowski’s tactics are arguably more obnoxious, having vocally supported a 2015 repeal bill, knowing that her vote at the time would have no real-world consequences. Once a Republican president was installed at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, Murkowksi didn’t merely flip-flop on the 2015 bill (which could at least be justified from a policy standpoint); she resolutely refused to vote for anything at all — including a motion to proceed to debate. When the possibility for real, consequential Obamacare repeal or reform presented itself, she morphed into a reflexive obstructionist, playing absolutely no constructive role Saying “no to everything would be understandable coming from a Democrat — they’ve done everything in their power to protect their imploding, harmful law. But this is a woman who campaigned as an Obamacare opponent, railed against the scheme’s demonstrable failures in her state, and voted for a sweeping “clean repeal package roughly 19 months ago. But when an opportunity for meaningful action arrived, she became an implacable Chuck Schumer ally, casting vote after vote to effectively enshrine Obamacare. Obamacare is a disaster that, left untouched, will be saved only by a massive taxpayer bailout of insurance companies. Premiums on Obamacare exchanges have gone up by double digits annually ever since their formation in 2013. Out-of-pocket expenses — including copays and deductibles — rose 40 percent, to $2,649 per person on average, between 2011 and 2014. Hundreds of counties across the country are likely to have no health insurers offering plans on their local exchanges next year. Far from being a modern-day “profile in courage, McCain’s vote against advancing Obamacare reform represents a complete reversal of the position he won his Senate election with last year. John Merline of Investor’s Business Daily notes that “In the private sector, promising one thing and delivering the other could be referred to as ‘deceptive trade practice.’ For some members of Congress, it’s just another day at the office. Like every American, we wish John McCain the best in his battle against a brain tumor. But in what may prove to be one of the most important votes he has cast in his 35 years in Congress, he chose to operate like the standard-issue politicians he likes to rail against.

Rosenthal recently previewed the offense and reported, “In addition to the Chargers not having a top-10 running game over the past decade, Rivers (according to Pro Football Focus) has also not had a single season of above-average pass protection in a decade as well. Therein lies a key factor contributing to the franchise’s woes the past 10 years.

Runningback

er, Kenneth Farrow and Andre Williams will compete to replace the versatility Woodhead provided Rivers — a familiar go-to coming out of the backfield on third downs. Despite limited playing time, fullback Derek Watt proved his worth as both a blocker and on special teams as a rookie last season. If he can stay healthy, look for Gordon to surpass the 1,400 scrimmage yards he accumulated last season, which earned him his first Pro Bowl appearance. The Endzone: Elliot Harrison of NFL Network says he wants Keenan Allen to come back big in 2017. Said Harrison, “I’m pulling for this guy, he’s been snake bitten his (entire) career and my bold prediction for him is he comes back from injury to lead the NFL in catches — over Antonio Brown, over Julio Jones — a couple of years ago he got hurt in week eight and he already had 67 catches. I think Keenan Allen can easily surpass over 100 catches and if he stays healthy he catches at least 125 balls. SB Nation’s Levi Damien recently listed Chargers’ Russell Okung and Joe Barksdale as the third best offensive tackle tandems in the AFC West. “Okung comes over after one shaky season in Denver, Damien wrote. “The oft injured tackle finished his first 16-game season of his career. Over those 16 games, he had 10 penalties — seven of which were for holding — and gave up four sacks. Even with his troubles in Denver, Okung stands to be an upgrade for a unit that gave up 238 pressures last season, which according to PFF stats is the most given up by a team in the past three years. “Part of that insane pressures total falls on the man on the other side — former Raiders draft pick Joe Barksdale, who gave up a league-leading 10.5 of the team’s 36 sacks surrendered.

Aside from missing the final three games last season due to a hip strain and knee sprain, Melvin Gordon couldn’t have a better sophomore season. Falling just three-yards short of 1,000 yards, Gordon scored a total of 12 touchdowns (10 rushing, 2 receiving) in 13 games after failing to score a single touchdown his rookie campaign. Like Allen, injuries have prevented Gordon from playing an entire season during his first two years in the NFL — a knee injury forced him to miss the final two games in 2015. The big question is which running back is going to fill the shoes of Danny Woodhead, who signed a free agent contract with the Ravens. While Gordon proved he has the talent to be a three-down back following Woodhead’s season-ending injury in week two last season, it is believed new head coach Anthony Lynn, a former NFL running back himself, likes the idea of running a tandem backfield to keep Gordon fresh and healthy throughout the season.
