Carl Vinson strike group heads to Korea In an apparent warning to North Korea, the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was diverted from a planned port visit to Australia and is now headed north to waters off the Korean peninsula. According to a news release from the U.S. Pacific Command, the strike force that includes two missile destroyers and a guided-missile cruiser are en route “to maintain readiness and presence in the western pacific. North Korea has conducted multiple ballistic missile launches over the past year. Since its deployment from San Diego on January 5th, the Carl Vinson strike group has participated in numerous bilateral exercises with Japanese and South Korean forces. One of the exercises was held in waters off Guam in February.

PRESIDENT TRUMP? Ivanka could be heiress to political dynasty D

uring the next four or eight years, you may have the opportunity to witness the grooming of the first woman president of the United States — Ivanka Trump! Make no mistake, President Trump has put her in an advisory role so she can be present to meet or deal with the world’s top leaders. Trump’s first week featured a host of policy talks centered around expanding maternity leave and extending the child care tax credit. Those policy initiatives are the work of his daughter, Ivanka who, while serving as by Richard T. Matz an unpaid adviser to her father, is using her position to execute an ambitious agenda she says will help women in the working world. Could it also set the tone for a Trump political dynasty? The agenda is a natural extension of an initiative Ivanka piloted as head of her clothing and accessories company — a job she recently left to live in DC full time. She’s working just as hard at promoting the cause in Washington as she did on social media, personally lobbying members of Congress to support the maternity leave extension — a policy initiative that the GOP has balked at in years past. Ivanka already possesses all the necessary traits she needs to impress and become first in line for the top position in our country. She has the elegance, the poise, the class and the intelligence to become the next candidate for the Republican Party. What woman candidate or man for either the Republican or Democratic parties can you think of that can top her? Some might disagree and say that Elizabeth Warren or Chelsea Clinton has the chance to become the Democratic candidate and beat her. But the odds makers in Vegas will tell you neither one of them has a chance! While there haven’t been many recent presidents with adult children, it’s rare for a First Kid to be so involved in political daily life. When we think of the elegance in the White House, we immediately think of Jacqueline Kennedy. With the Trumps — and Ivanka — in the White House, we just might have the opportunity to return to Camelot.

Report: drug use among SEALs ‘staggering’ From cocaine to prescription painkillers, a CBS investigative report revealed rampant drug use among Navy SEALs. Three SEALs who spoke on the condition of anonymity described a growing problem of drug abuse within the SEAL community. In a mandatory meeting, Capt. Jamie Sands, commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group Two addressed the gathered troops. “I feel betrayed, he said. “How do you do that to us? How do you decide that it’s okay for you to do drugs? I feel like I’m watching our foundation, our culture erode in front of our eyes. The drug use is not isolated to a single type according to SEALs who have seen the behavior from the inside. “People that we know of, that we hear about, have tested positive for cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, ecstasy, one SEAL told CBS. The disguised SEALs told CBS that even though all troops are subject to random drug tests, they aren’t conducted away from base, which is most of the time for SEALs and something Sands vowed to change.

‘THE TICKET’ TAKES SEEING TO NEW LEVELS By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

In theaters and VOD from writer/director Ido Fluk and Shout! Factory Films is a story about seeing what’s important with “The Ticket. James (Dan Stevens) is blind and living with wife Sam (Malin Akerman), and son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) they have a nice life together. He works for a company as a telemarketer that gives people cash for their homes. Working with him is buddy Bob (Oliver Platt) and together they have a friendship based on their lack of site. One morning as James is waking up, he become aware that he is seeing light. Immediately they see the doctor and discover that his sight has returned. It is an amazing happening, and the couple is thrilled. James takes time to enjoy having his sight back and all too quickly things begin to change. His employer notices that James production is way up and rewards him accordingly. James also notices Jessica (Kerry Bishe) who flirts openly with him. As he spends more and more time away from home, Sam begins to see a change in her husband. Even their son Jonah cannot help but see that James has become someone they don’t recognize. Taking everything too quickly has its consequences as his marriage, fatherhood and

Dan Stevens stars in “The Ticket as a blind man who suddenly regains his sight, only to find that seeing leaves him in a different kind of darkness.

friendships all flip like a light switch and leave James in a different kind of darkness. Stevens as James perfected the role of blind-to-site and dealing with the trappings of both worlds. It is difficult to know how anyone would behave in the same situation which is the point, this characters tests us all and Stevens gives us plenty of pause.

Akerman as Sam is a woman who truly loves her husband. Living a life of caretaking for him is a labor of love and James forgets that easily. I loved watching the turmoil Akerman portrays and I give her kudos for being stronger than a lot of women. Now I stand an applaud when she gives James a choice and sticks to it! Gaertner as Jonah is a young man who is at that age where nothing escapes his attention — even a changing father. Bishe as Jessica is a character I wasn’t about to warm up to and again that’s perhaps there is a lesson in that as well. Platt as Bob is such a good friend and even when James is being a douche bag Bob is still a good friend. But, as with all friendships, there comes a point at which the choices we make affect everything and everyone — Bob is no exception. “The Ticket has several layers to the story telling where are so in depth here. From a man who is living a good, even if simple life, until a change he never thought would happen wasn’t just a change of his eyesight. Watching James change is actually quite

sad because it begs the question — what does it take to know a good thing? Scenes between Stevens and Platt are absolutely amazing but their final scene together is one that just broke my heart. It is the final scene that will leave the audience holding their breath waiting for an answer that just might not come. Using the backdrop of a serious economy and the “we buy houses signs, Fluk says, “I live in Brooklyn, and would often see these flyers everywhere. There were houses being foreclosed, and some people were profiting from it. It makes for an even deeper look at how people treat one another in the worst of times. “It’s a film that asks some very, very big questions, Stevens says. “It’s the kind of film that, as you leave the movie theater, you just want to talk about for hours. Well said! In the end — life can be both seen and felt! Jeri Jacquin is the Movie Maven. For more on films and television, go to http://moviemaven. homestead.com.

NBA playoffs: Dangerous teams to watch

On paper, the Golden State Warriors may waltz to their second NBA championship in three seasons. The Dubs won 14 straight games before losing to the Utah Jazz on April 10 and currently sport a 66-15 record, including a 35-5 mark at home. But games aren’t played on paper, and although the NBA playoffs are normally chalky, anything can happen. Here’s a look at the bracket format and two dangerous teams to watch this postseason. Wilson Reis will face Demetrious “Might Mouse Johnson at UFC Fight Night in Kansas City for the flyweight title. Ries fights out of Chula Vista’s Alliance Gym.

ilson Reis and Jeremy Stephens, both fighting out of Chula Vista’s Alliance Gym, will be featured at UFC on FOX 24 in Kansas City on April 15. Reis (25-2-1) will face champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse Johnson (22-6) for the UFC flyweight title. Reis is hoping to prevent Johnson from making UFC history with a 10th title defense, which if successful, will tie Anderson Silva’s record for most successful UFC title defenses.

For Reis, the opportunity to square off with Johnson — whom many consider the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world — is a dream come true. Ranked No. 3 in the UFC, Reis has won five of his last six bouts, including his three most recent fights. Originally scheduled to fight in 2016, the fight was cancelled due to an injury to Johnson. Initially disappointed his shot at the title was postponed, Reis believes the delay was to his benefit because he finetuned his skills during two victories in the past year. “I believe everything happens for a reason, Reis recently told MMA Fighting. “The fight didn’t happen last year, it was canceled three weeks before, when I was super well-prepared, but I used this extra time really well. I fought twice, did two more training camps, and evolved a lot. I was ready then, and I believe I’m even better this time. Headlining a UFC event for the first time in his career, Reis is not lacking in

Bracket format

The eight teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences with the best winloss records advance to the four-round NBA playoffs, where each matchup is a best-of-seven series. In the first round, the No. 1 seed in each conference plays the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed takes on No. 7, No. 3 plays No. 6, and No. 4 faces No. 5. In the conference semifinals, the winners of the No. 1 vs. No. 8 and No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchups face each other, and the victors of the other two series also meet. The winners move onto the conference finals, and then the Eastern and Western Conference champions face off in the NBA Finals. In each series, the team with the better seed hosts Games 1, 2, 5 and 7, while its opponent hosts Games 3, 4 and 6.

Having trained for seven years with former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz (who beat Johnson in 2011), Reis believes his ground game and tips from Cruz will carry him to victory on April 15. “It helps a lot because Dominick Cruz talked to me about openings in his game, things that happened, Reis said. “He shares that with me, and it helps a lot. He fought (Johnson) for five rounds and he knows a lot about his strength and cardio. But the good thing about it is that Dominick gives us so much confidence. Training with him every day is such an advantage for us. “I’m focused, confident and prepared. THROUGH HELL AND BACK TO TELL ABOUT IT Survivor of sinking of USS Colhoun returns to Okinawa By Cpl. Amaia Unanue III Marine Expeditionary Force

O

KINAWA, Japan — At 4:30 p.m., April 6, 1945, the United States Ship John C. Colhoun II received a call for help from a ship under kamikaze attack. When the Colhoun sailed toward the vessel in distress, the kamikazes turned on the Colhoun, crashing into the bridge of the ship and sinking it. Navy veteran Donald Irwin survived, but lost 34 shipmates that day, off the coast of Okinawa. On the 72nd anniversary of the Colhoun sinking, Donald returned. “I thought to myself, ‘Am I too old to have a bucket list?’ said Irwin, a 93-yearold, San Jose native. “I’ve always wanted to return to Okinawa. As he laid a wreath on Toguchi Beach in commemoration of the 34 fallen service members, he closed a chapter of his personal journey.

Afterward, the veteran participated in the Battle of Midway, raids on the Marshall Islands, the invasion of the Solomon Islands and the Doolittle raid in Japan. From the beginning of the war until the end, Donald was fighting somewhere in the Pacific. One of the Marines listening was Cpl. Dakota Ford, a field radio operator with Marine Wing Communications Squadron 18, Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. Ford, who met Donald Irwin at the Camp Foster United Services Organization building, said he felt humbled to hear the veteran’s story. “Sometimes we complain about us working in a sweaty workshop, but he’s actually been there, taking rounds and sending rounds down range, and watching his buddies to his left and right die, so it’s definitely humbling, and I’ll instill that in my Marines, said Ford. 5 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT WWI By Katie Lange DoD News, Defense Media Activity

World War I – a.k.a., the Great War – broke out in 1914 and significantly shaped the rest of the 20th Century, abroad and here at home. April 6 marked 100 years since the U.S. got involved in the international conflict. Centennial events will be unfolding across the country this year to remind Americans of the sacrifices made during that war and how it shaped many of the policies and problems we still have today. So, if your World War I history knowledge is a little rusty, here are some key facts to know about the Great War and America’s involvement in it.

Why did the U.S. enter so late?

America had chosen to remain neutral for much of the war. But after a German submarine (known as a U-boat) sank the British cruise liner Lusitania in May 1915, killing 123 Americans as they innocently crossed the Atlantic, America grew concerned over Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare tactics. Still, the U.S. stayed neutral for two more years. On April 6, 1917 – 100 years ago – the U.S. finally joined the fray. President Presscited storagetwo west 1-4 pg horiz_02-16.pdf Woodrow Military Wilson reasons for the

declaration of war: Germany had tried to get Mexico to join in an alliance against the U.S. (which failed), and Germany had also violated a pledge to suspend its unrestricted submarine warfare in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. Our role in helping to win the war and mediating its aftermath led to the rise of the U.S. as a global power.

We were technically not part of the Allies While the U.S. joined the war on the side of the Allies, we technically entered the war as an associated power. That meant we weren’t bound to honor pre-existing agreements among the Allied powers, most of which focused on post-war redistribution of territories.

War of 1812’s famed Fort McHenry Veterans Day is a product of the was busier during WWI Great War

Fort McHenry in Baltimore is famous for what occurred there during the War of 1812. The Chesapeake Bay, just off the fort’s shores, was where Francis Scott Key penned the “Star-Spangled Banner during a naval battle. But the fort was actually much more active during World War I, where an Army hospital had been built around it. Over the course of the war, more than 20,000 sick 1 and 2/12/2016 11:00:10 AM wounded soldiers passed through it.

Of course, 22-year-old forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is still playing incredible basketball, averaging 23.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.4 assists a night. Furthermore, guard Malcolm Brogdon has come on strong and is a legitimate candidate for Rookie of the Year. The Bucks are a dangerous team that will be better than its seed, which will likely be No. 6.

Toronto Raptors

What started World War I?

The war officially began toward the end of July 1914 after Franz Ferdinand, the archduke of Austria, was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist in Bosnia, which was part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. The general feeling was that Serbia, a country with which Bosnia had religious tensions, was responsible for the assassination, so the empire declared war on the Serbs. From there, through alliances, most European countries entered the conflict by declaring war on each other.

NBA PLAYOFFS

The armistice that ended the war’s hostilities took effect on Nov. 11, 1918. A year later, President Wilson declared it Armistice Day, a time to honor those who took part in the war. A few years later, Nov. 11 became a federal holiday. In 1954, after the events of World War II and the Korean War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing its name to Veterans Day.

The Raps are better than they were a season ago, when they were the No. 2 seed and went to the Eastern Conference finals. That’s due in large part to two major reinforcements the Raptors acquired midseason: forwards Serge Ibaka and P.J. Tucker. Those two have helped the Raptors accrue an 11-2 record over their last 13 games. Ibaka has emerged as a solid third scoring option for Toronto, posting 14.2 points per game and hitting 39.8 percent of his three-pointers. He also pulls down 6.8 rebounds per game for the Raps. P.J. Tucker is a defensive pest off the bench capable of guarding many NBA wings. He’s not much of a scoring threat, but he doesn’t need to be considering shooting guard DeMar DeRozan and point guard Kyle Lowry are tasked with being the Raptors’ primary and secondary scorers. Per ESPN, the Raptors are top seven in the NBA in both offensive and defensive efficiency. The only other two teams that can say that are Golden State and San Antonio, which have the NBA’s best win-loss records.

the moment as overwhelming. “Emotionally, seeing all those people standing in line to meet me was absolutely amazing to me — that those young people went out of their way to meet me, said Donald. Throughout this trip, Donald and Geneva said they both felt very honored and welcomed. Donald said his most memorable experience was seeing what Okinawa looked like now and comparing it to the last time he was here. “The last time I was here was, of course, in the dark, and the war was still going on, and things looked messy, said Donald. “All of the city build-up through 72 years covered up the bad parts. So that made an impression on me. Not only did Okinawa leave a memorable impression on Donald, but he also said he hopes that he left an impression on the service members stationed in Okinawa. He said he believes the service members here would still be the first to fight. “I say to them, ‘When we were here, we were on the front line,’ Donald said. “And then I tell them, ‘So are you.’ XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t OFXT!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

VETS CALLING CRISIS LINE FINALLY GET THROUGH Just a year ago, troubled veterans who called seeking the Veterans Affairs Department crisis line were greeted with an off-putting message that may have caused more harm than good. “It would literally say, ‘If you’re having thoughts of suicide, hang up and dial a 1-800 number, said Scott Blackburn, interim deputy secretary at VA. “That was the response one year ago. Not surprisingly, Blackburn said 30 percent of the veterans attempting to connect to the crisis line would drop off — and the harsh reality is 20 veterans commit suicide nationwide every day. “Unacceptable, Blackburn said, speaking April 12 at ACT-IAC’s Customer Experience Summit. Fixing this problem became one of the main early objectives of the VA’s Veteran Experience wing, created under former Secretary Robert McDonald in 2015. The wing is a mix of customer service professionals and techies, and it tackled VA’s communication problems immediately. Today, veterans who call seeking VA’s crisis line are greeted with a message to “press 7 to connect to the crisis line, and the tweak has reduced the rollover rate to less than 1 percent, Blackburn said. Blackburn said it’s also increased de-

mand, leading to VA opening a second crisis hub in Atlanta in addition to a facility in New York. VA, he said, is answering 50 percent more crisis calls every day, buoyed because troubled veterans know someone will pick up the phone when they’re in need.

“We realized demand jumped, Blackburn said. “It’s great because we’re helping more people but it was bad because weren’t ready to handle that volume. That’s quite a transformation and this is happening very much in real time.

In addition to the improved crisis line, Blackburn said VA has vastly improved response times of its benefits national call center. In January 2016, 59 percent of the calls made to the call center were blocked, and those lucky veterans who got through spent minutes or hours on the phone waiting for answers. “We couldn’t even measure the abandonment rate because it was so high, Blackburn said. One year later, the average response time — when a call is answered by a person in a call center — is less than 2 minutes, while the abandonment rate is down to a manageable 3 percent. And, importantly, the call center doesn’t block any veteran’s calls anymore. Spearheaded by the VE wing in collaboration with about two dozen members of the U.S. Digital Service, VA has also introduced MyVA311, a single phone number (1-844-MyVA311), Blackburn said. Vets can call the toll-free number to figure out which of the nearly 1,000 VA phone numbers they actually need. “We used to have 975 1-800 numbers, said Blackburn, noting vets often had to memorize a half-dozen or more phone numbers to receive the care they needed. “That’s just absolutely insane.

Improvements in hell

An engineer died and ended up in Hell. He was not pleased with the level of comfort in Hell, and began to redesign and build improvements. After awhile, they had toilets that flush, air conditioning, and escalators. Everyone grew very fond of him. One day God called to Satan to mock him, “So, how’s it going down there in Hell? Satan replied, “Hey, things are great. We’ve got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there’s no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next. God was surprised, “What? You’ve got an engineer? That’s a mistake. He should never have gotten down there in the first place. Send him back up here. “No way, replied Satan. “I like having an engineer, and I’m keeping him. God threatened, “Send him back up here now or I’ll sue! Satan laughed and answered, “Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?
