Teen lands exclusive with Mattis Found secretary’s phone number, and ‘Mad Dog’ called back When you’re a journalist, it’s a big deal to score a one-on-one interview with any high-level public figure, whether they’re a politician, a military leader or a celebrity. So you can imagine the surprise when a one-on-one article came out recently featuring interviewee Defense Secretary Jim Mattis — and it was written by a high schooler. The teen just happened to find Mattis’ personal cellphone number and called it. As most people who write for a living would, many read this story and thought, “How the heck did that happen?! Turns out the teen who scored the interview was sophomore Teddy Fischer, a staff writer for the newspaper at Mercer Island High School in Washington state. Fischer apparently saw Mattis’ personal cellphone number when it was accidentally posted in a photo in a Washington Post news article. He called and left Mattis a message, and to his surprise, the retired four-star Marine Corps general called him back! So they set up an interview, and Fischer, along with his colleague Jane Gormley, got to work prepping questions for the DoD’s most senior leader. Their finished product: “Education the Key to Reducing the Lure of Terror, says Mattis, can be read at https://goo. gl/9eMtQR. In a second article reflecting on the experience (https://goo.gl/vJ9jLi), Gormley said the most bizarre part was that Mattis actually called Fischer back. You can also read the transcript of the interview at https://goo.gl/t3WNoC. PS – If you think you can find the photo of Mattis’ number that was accidentally posted in the Post article, you’re out of luck. The photo was quickly taken offline.

With a net worth of more than $75 billion, Warren Buffett says that while the economy is in better shape, it’s mainly benefiting the super rich.

BILLIONAIRE BUFFETT SAYS ‘REAL PROBLEM’ WITH THE US ECONOMY IS PEOPLE LIKE HIM

arren Buffett says people like him are the problem with the U.S. economy. With a net worth of more than $75 billion, Buffett is currently the second richest man alive, according to Forbes. As the CEO of investing house Berkshire Hathaway, he is hallowed as the Oracle of Omaha. But for all his personal success, Buffett says the issue really is the 1 percent. “The real problem, in my view, is — this has been — the prosperity has been unbelievable for the extremely rich people, Buffett told PBS Newshour. “If you go to 1982, when Forbes put on their first 400 list, those people had [a total of ] $93 billion. They now have $2.4 trillion, [a multiple of ] 25 for one, he says. “This has been a prosperity that’s been disproportionately rewarding to the people on top. The stock market has been trending upwards since the crash in March 2009 and the U.S. economy is growing at roughly 2 percent, says Buffett on Newshour. That growth rate (while a third less than the 3 percent rate President Donald Trump has been touting) is a healthy number for the economy and will improve the quality of

life of many Americans. It will add “$19,000 of GDP per person, family of four, $76,000 in one generation, says Buffett. “So, your children and your children’s children and all that, they will live far, far, far better than we live with 2 percent growth. And yet, many individuals are stuck. “The economy is doing well, but all Americans aren’t doing well, says Buffett. Part of the reason some are struggling, says the octogenarian investor, is that the automation and digitization of the U.S. labor force is happening faster than employees can be retrained. “We always see shifts in employment. If you think about it, if you go back to 1800, it took 80 percent of the labor force to produce enough food for the country. Now it takes less than 3 percent. Well, the truth is that market systems move people around, says Buffett. “There’s always a mismatch. I mean, you know, as the economy evolves, it reallocates resources. As employees fall out of the labor force because their skills are no longer utilized, Buffett says it ought to be the responsibility of society to take care of them as they

are retrained to re-enter the workforce. The evolving economy “doesn’t benefit the steelworker maybe in Ohio, says Buffett on Newshour. “And that’s the problem that has to be addressed, because when you have something that’s good for society, but terribly harmful for given individuals, we have got to make sure those individuals are taken care of. Buffett made his extreme wealth by investing in the stock market, an interest that took hold young. Buffett bought his first stock when he was 11 and has been in the market for 75 years. He recommends others do the same. “They should just keep buying and buying and buying a little bit of America as they go along. And 30 or 40 years from now, they will have a lot of money, he says. In an effort to compensate for the wealth inequality that he himself has benefited from, Buffett and his billionaire buddy Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates co-founded the Giving Pledge, a voluntary commitment by the richest people in the world to give away at least half of their wealth. The goal of the Giving Pledge is not only to help those in need but to encourage others to do the same.

Tom Holland nails the role of Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel’s latest telling of the Spider-Man story.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ spins web of success By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

In theaters from director Jon Watts, Marvel Studios and Columbia Pictures is “Spider-Man: Homecoming. It has been a while since Peter Parker/ Spider-Man (Tom Holland) had his experience with the Avengers. Now he’s back home with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), living the life of a teenager. Watching him is Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who gives Happy (Jon Favreau) the babysitting gig. In school Peter finds himself love-struck by Liz (Laura Harrier), who is also part of the debate team. Promising that Spider-Man would make an appearance, that would fall through when busting up a crime is more important. More so than Peter could have imagined when he finds a piece of their equipment that has incredible technology not seen before. Not about to let him take it, Peter meets Vulture (Michael Keaton), who puts a thrown down on the young superhero. If that isn’t enough, best bud Ned discovers what Peter has been up to. Of course, that’s the side story he tells Aunt May, but with Ned’s help they begin to locate who is responsible for the technology in the weapon Peter found and who is the Vulture! ComicCon rolls into San Diego next week, and did you know that Stan Lee served in the military? Lee, known for working with the company that became Marvel Comics and artist Jack Kirby, co-created comic book characters such as Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Thor, X-Men and Doctor Strange. But he also served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Lee enlisted in 1942, shortly after hearing of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a lineman for the Signal Corps before the Army realized his writing skills and moved him into technical writing and doing posters, said Army Sgt.1st Class Nicholas Jones, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Other known writers who started out in the Army with Lee included novelist William Saroyan and TV writers Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, whom Lee met while working at the Army Training Division in Astoria, Queens, New York. Service members from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, including Jones, inducted Lee into the Signal Corps Regimental Association and gave him an honorary membership into the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, during a comic convention in March. “I want to tell [fans] if you’re looking, this is one of my proudest moments. Excelsior! Lee said as he received a certificate for lifetime membership in the Signal Corps, as well as a coin from the battalion. During a comic convention last month, Lee said as a writer, he used his experiences throughout his life to influence his characters and hopes they will continue to live on and inspire others.

UFC President Dana White says that after Conor McGregor’s defeat of Nate Diaz he doesn’t doubt the fighter anymore.

THE POWER OF CONOR MCGREGOR According to UFC prez Dana White By Simon Samano MMA Junkie

LOS ANGELES — UFC President Dana White thinks for a second about the time he first met Conor McGregor in early 2013, when he was on the verge of coming to the UFC. Could White have imagined this 24-year-old Irish kid from Dublin, a thentwo-division Cage Warrior champion, would be in this position? That McGregor four-and-a-half years later would potentially rake in $100 million to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match? “No, White says bluntly.

But then he immediately recognizes that a simple “no answer doesn’t suffice. “I mean, listen, you guys have heard this story a million times, White continues, “where I say I flew (McGregor) to Vegas, we went to dinner, I called (then-UFC CEO) Lorenzo (Fertitta) when I got into the car, and I said, ‘I don’t know if this kid can fight, but if he can even throw a punch, he’s going to be a huge star.’ What this guy has turned into and what he’s become is incredible. I call him the unicorn. He’s unlike anybody I’ve ever dealt with. And so here we are on the verge of a combat sports crossover event the likes of which we’ve never seen. McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) and Mayweather (49-0 boxing) fight on Aug. 26 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in a pay-per-view event expected to be the most lucrative prizefight of all time. McGregor kicked off a four-city world tour July 11 with Mayweather at Staples

but she’s still very much a dog, so she wants to see all the other dogs, and everybody wants to pet her. That’s the one rule I break when I’m at the Warrior Games. I figure she’s here for everybody else, too, he said.

that I rolled my eyes time and time again thinking how awful another Spider-Man would be. I was even grumpier when I learned Holland took the role. I felt this way mainly because Holland captured my attention completely in 2012 with the film “The Impossible.â€? I said then that Holland “is a tremendous talent ‌ with the amazing capability of showing such strength of characterâ€? and nothing, I mean nothing, has changed my mind since. My only worry (as all mom’s have them) is that he will be sucked into the superhero universe, leaving little time to expand is resume. This is an actor to keep an eye on when he’s out of the suit as much as when he’s in it. Well done young man, well done. I absolutely love Keaton, so to see him once again doing what we all know he can do is a treat scene after scene. Yes, he and Adam West are my Batman, but I’m willing to cut him a little slack for his character in the film. Batalon as Ned is the buddy we all should have in our lives. He’s a bit goofy, a lot nerdy, and scary when it comes to keeping secrets — but we wouldn’t change him for anything. Downey Jr. as Tony Stark continues to cause cheers in a filled theater. Fans love him, and there will never be another Stark like this (so don’t try to recast it for at least 100 years, OK?). He keeps his eye on Peter Parker in the oddest ways as his inner father-figure kicks in. With Favreau, these two bring comedy in the most bizarre places, yet I love it. “Spider-Man: Homecomingâ€? doesn’t need my tubs of popcorn because it’s going to blow up the screens. So much so that you might forget the other incarnations of the webbed kid and believe they may have finally gotten it completely right. Holland gives us teen angst, a bit of teen hero-rebellion, loyalty to friends, battles that are worthy of the webbed one and moments of a kid trying to be a kid. In case you are wondering, of course I’m not telling you things about the film. Seriously, why would I do that? I’m not into spoiling fun! Fans are going to be leaving the theater giddy and probably buying tickets to see it again with more friends who are fans. With ComicCon right around the corner, I am expecting to see more Spidey suits than ever before because of this film. There is excitement, action, laughs, surprises and a cast that bring it all together in such a way that it’s almost a bummer when it’s over. As for what happens after the credits, you’ll have to make sure you stay in your seat for a few minutes longer than normal (insert grin here). “Spider-Man: Homecomingâ€? is completely epic without being full of itself, and I’m refreshingly OK with that. In the end — he’s just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!

Moxie

Medically retired Army Sgt. Christina Gardner has had Moxie, a golden retriever, for seven years. “She’s for assistance, as well as for seizure alert and response, so she helps a lot with detecting and alerting me to my seizures and then fetching and carrying things, Gardner said. “She’s pretty awesome, she added. “She’s loving all the attention and everything, but it’s funny. Sometimes when she knows it’s a task I ask her to do that I can do for myself, she just gives me a look like, ‘Are you kidding me? Go do it yourself.’ Moxie is the only service dog here for Team Army, so Gardner said she’s become the team mascot. “Everybody’s been loving on her. She’s getting very spoiled. She loves this attention, Gardner said. Moxie is wearing the Army combat uniform Gardner was wearing when she was injured. “The Red Cross at Walter Reed [National Military Medical Center] takes our uniform after we’re injured and makes that into her uniform, Gardner said. “It puts her in uniform, too. She’s my battle buddy everywhere I go. She serves just as much as I do.

Valhalla

Medically retired Air Force Senior Airman Hannah Stolberg has had Valhalla, a Catahoula mix, for three years. “He’s dual-trained to help me physically up and down the stairs when I fall, for stability, and for [post-traumatic stress disorder], Stolberg said. “He’s very intuitive to how I feel, she said. “Service dogs in general become an extension, like another limb. When you touch a service dog, you are basically touching another person, an extension of them. She said she named him Valhalla because she loves Norse mythology. “The way I look at him is he is my little piece of

heaven here, she added. “He’s my heaven. Valhalla has been “amazing at the Warrior Games, he’s been amazing, Stolberg said. “I fell this morning, and he was already tucked into his spot, but he came running out to help me up. He wakes me up from my nightmares every night, and as exhausted as he is, he never fails to meet any need I have.

Lola

Lola, a Labrador retriever-springer spaniel mix, has been with medically retired Air Force Tech. Sgt. Eric Fisher for the past three years. “She’s meant a lot in my recovery, Fisher said. “She’s given me the ability to actually be out in public. She’s a huge part of my life. She’s with me 24/7. I help her out with some of her anxieties, and she helps me out with a lot of mine. It’s kind of a partnership. It works really well.

Freedom

Freedom, a standard poodle, sported a red, white and blue Mohawk hairstyle for the Fourth of July weekend and carries his own water bowl. His owner is medically

retired Navy air crewman Brett Parks. “We both have similar personalities; we’re both a little bit clumsy, Parks said. “It’s amazing we were matched up together, because he likes to cuddle. He’s bubbly. He’s happy, but he’s also very calm and low-key — a laid back kind of dog. Parks said Freedom helps to pick things up for him when he drops them, and if he falls, Freedom helps to pick him up. “He’s also an extra set of eyes and ears. He’s got my six, Parks said. “He’s the celebrity here at the games. I always joke with people that if I wasn’t walking around with Freedom, no one would know who I was. They don’t know my name. He’s way more popular than I am. I’m OK with that. Parks was on a two-year waiting list for a service dog, but after six months, a space opened up. He thought he was going to get a German shepherd or a Rottweiler, he said, and then he heard he was getting a poodle. “I was like, ‘Whoa, no. But I looked up standard poodles and saw they were originally bred as hunting dogs, and now I love Freedom. I wouldn’t trade him for the world. Now I want all poodles, he said.

Getting a service dog

8 +VMZ

“Service dogs are invaluable in helping warriors with the daily struggles they go through, whether it’s physical, mental [or] psychological. The canine is there to help in every facet, from physical companion to emotional regulation, Condrey said. “There’s people here who are on the fence about getting a service dog or might not want a service dog, but when they see ours and get to interact with them and see how we’re doing better because we have service dogs, it send the message that it’s OK to have them, Parks said. “They’re just great companions, especially on the road. You’re on a plane by yourself, in a terminal by yourself, in a hotel, and then there’s the welcome addition that they’re just very Jeri Jacquin is the Movie Maven. For more on kind dogs. f you’re in the market for a new home, Shea Homes offers VA financing at five new neighborhoods in Chula Vista, with pricing starting from the high-$300,000s. Located at 1842 Observation Way off Eastlake Parkway in the new master-planned community of Millenia, Shea Homes is now selling Element and Z, both showcasing striking vertical architecture. Z is a neighborhood of 106 attached residential condominiums with three plan floors ranging from 1,288 to 1,475 square feet. Two to three bedroom homes include 2.5 baths and a two-car, side-byside garage. Pricing starts in the high $300,000s. At Element, Shea Homes is building 70 detached residences configured in a motor court design, ranging from 1,775 to 2,248 square feet and priced from the mid $500,000s. “We are pleased to be working with a number of military families who are able to take advantage of zero-down-payment VA financing, said Vanessa Linn, vice president of sales and marketing for Shea Homes, who noted that VA loans are guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. “VA financing presents a tremendous opportunity for entry-level or first time move-up buyers trying to break in to the San Diego housing market, added Linn. “Our Shea representatives are well versed in the intricacies of these loans and can help home shoppers understand their options.

Also offering VA financing are three new communities just opened at The Village of Escaya, located off Main Street and Heritage Road in Chula Vista. This collection of new homes includes traditional single-family homes up to 2,949 square feet at Seville, alley-loaded single-family homes at Sierra,

and triplex condominium homes at Strata. For more information on these three new communities, please call 866-696-7432. Strata at The Village of Escaya offers three to four bedrooms and two to three baths in plans that range from 1,407 to 1,736 square feet. Pricing

begins in the high $300,000s. Sierra at The Village of Escaya will present three to five bedrooms and two to three baths, ranging from 1,833 to 2,179 square feet. Pricing at Sierra starts in the high $400,000s. With four to five bedrooms and three baths, ranging up to 2,949 square feet, Seville at The Village of Escaya is priced from the low $600,000s. To reach The Village of Escaya from I-805, take the Main Street exit and drive east; watch for a new extension of Heritage Road and follow the signs. Also in San Diego’s South County, Shea has just opened a new information center at Vista Del Cielo in Bella Lago. Located at the base of San Miguel Mountain with views of Otay Lakes and surrounding mountains, Vista Del Cielo in Bella Lago is a private luxury community with single-level and two-story plans ranging from 3,873 to 4,739 square feet. With up to six bedrooms and 5.5 baths, Vista Del Cielo presents 52 homes designed in Spanish Romantica, Spanish Hacienda and Spanish Eclectic styling. Pricing has not yet been announced, but interested home shoppers are invited to join the Vista Del Cielo interest list at SheaHomes.com. The grand opening is scheduled in two weeks, on Saturday, July 15. One day a professor of Psychology was greeting his new college class. He stood up in front of the class and said, “Would everyone who thinks he or she is stupid please stand up? After a minute or so of silence, a young man stood up. “Well, good morning. So, you actually think you’re a moron? the professor asked. The kid replied, “No sir, I just didn’t want to see you standing there all by yourself.

Hot stuff

A minister who was very fond of pure, hot horseradish always kept a bottle of it on his dining room table. Once, at dinner, he offered some to a guest, who took a big spoonful. The guest let out a huge gasp. When he was finally able to speak, he choked out, “I’ve heard many ministers preach hellfire, but you are the first one I’ve met who passes out a sample of it.
