New Battle Rig challenges warfighter’s fitness

Soldiers gathered outside of Anderson Field House at Fort Eustis for the unveiling of their new obstacle course known as the Battle Rig, Dec. 12.

The new obstacle course, built by the Alpha Warrior Company, works to strengthen muscles used in day-to-day work environments and gives groups the opportunity to condition together in a unique way.

“We are pushing our Soldiers to include more functional fitness in their everyday workout plans and thankfully, the Alpha Warrior Battle Rig promotes that development,” said Kellie Jorgensen, 633rd Force Support Squadron Fort Eustis fitness center director. “It helps by engaging in those functional movement patterns used more in your daily life.”

The various obstacles throughout the rig help strengthen muscles from the core to the upper body, while also focusing on increasing grip strength.

The rig encourages individuals to practice safe techniques in the workplace, such as proper lifting habits.

To encourage Soldiers and Airmen to practice on the rig, the fitness center staff hosted a small competition during the unveiling, timing each competitor and providing tips and tricks to improve their time.

Showcasing how to properly use the system, Air Force Alpha Warrior Final Battle fitness competition winners, U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Nicole Mitchell and Airman 1st Class Trevor Puerile, kicked off the unveiling by climbing through each obstacle.

“I think it’s awesome to be able to show other people techniques, gain more competition and get more people involved,” said Puerile. “For people interested in competing, you just have to train and keep training. Endurance,

rock climbing and cross-fit (training) will all help you. It’s all about practicing and gaining technique.”

With the rig erected outside of the fitness center, Joint Base Langley-Eustis Department of Defense ID card holders are able to utilize the obstacle whenever they need to, said Jorgensen.

Jorgensen hopes to host regional competitions on the rig in the future, similar to the one Langley’s Community Commons hosted in October.

“The rig provides a different way to challenge and motivate yourself,” said Jorgensen. “It’s a new, fun, innovative way to practice and accomplish your fitness goals.”

‘Don’t come here unless you are prepared’: U.S. Army Sniper School sets high bar for candidates

FORT BENNING, Ga. — At first glance, the U.S. Army Sniper School may seem like a reality TV elimination show akin to “Survivor.” Of the 46 candidates who entered the course in August, only four remained by the end of week five.

For the remaining students, though, there were no comforts in the form of television producers or catering tents during the course. And the sniper candidates still had to face their most daunting challenge — a culminating exercise that would test all of the skills they had learned over the past six weeks.

WEEK SIX: ALTERNATE FIRING POSITIONS In week six, students were taught to engage targets from less-stable platforms or positions, since the majority of engagements they will encounter as snipers will not occur while in prone position.

“Snipers rarely can engage targets from a prone supported position in combat situations,” said Sgt. 1st Class Eric Doolittle, sniper school operations noncommissioned officer. He added that snipers must use alternate positions and must utilize whatever is around them to create the most stable position possible.

Among other weapons, students shot the M2010 Winchester Magnum rifle on ranges up to 1,300 meters. They also shot the M9 pistol and the M107 .50-caliber sniper rifle.

WEEK SEVEN: EMPLOYMENT PHASE, FIELD TRAINING, SNIPER PRACTICE In the final week of school, also known as the “employment phase,” students planned and executed their mission after receiving an operations order.

The first day covered urban infiltration and hide setup. Candidates observed battlefield information and countered sniper operations.

Students then moved into the woods to build a “subsurface hide,” digging holes in the ground and meticulously camouflaging them.

and were tested on skills that included stalking, target detection, range estimation and shooting.

On the last day of the course, students were given a time-limited road march to the range to conduct a “final shot,” since snipers must be able to move quickly, carry a rucksack of equipment, and be physically able to perform their missions after extended marching.

To conduct the final shot, students were given two rounds and one target. Once they located the target, they calculated and determined the range to it and engaged the target. A first-round hit was worth 100 points, a second-round hit 50 points, and a miss, zero. These scores went to determine the honor graduate and “top gun” points for graduation.

GRADUATION DAY On Sept. 22, out of the 46 sniper candidates who began the course at

Fort Benning, only four remained to graduate.

Sgt. Stephen Ray, Sgt. Dale Taylor, Spc. Charles Gifford, and Sgt. Nathan Vencil sat together. The four Soldiers were now qualified as both Army snipers and spotters.

Ray graduated No. 1, or “Top Gun” in the class. An Oklahoma native, Ray is from the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Texas. During the training, Ray said that it was always in the back of his mind that he would make it to the next phase of training.

He said that after he was given notice that he would be attending school, his platoon’s leadership went out of their way to ensure he had several chances to develop his shooting skills. » See SNIPER SCHOOL | 5

His mentioned his biggest challenge during the course was stalking. He overcame the difďŹ culties by learning from his mistakes and by applying what he had been taught. “The training in sniper school is hands down the best I’ve received in the Army,â€? Ray said. “All of the instructors are driven to train you to be the best sniper you can be. They want you to succeed and will do everything they can to help you do so while simultaneously maintaining the highest of standards.

Instructors will spend as much time as needed to help ensure we grasp the concepts being taught.�

Ray said the best advice he can give Soldiers interested in being a sniper is to excel at their current job. “Someone aspiring to be a sniper needs to stand out among his peers,� Ray said. “A Soldier needs to excel at his job and put himself in a position that will allow him to pursue the chance to go to sniper school.�

When Ray returns to his unit, he plans to teach his Soldiers what he has learned. “I will do everything I can to prepare my Soldiers who wish to attend sniper school,â€? Ray said. “If a Soldier has been appropriately trained on the tasks he will face at school, it will signiďŹ cantly increase his chances to pass sniper school

Gifford, 28, from Sequin, Texas, believes being an Army sniper is the epitome of being a Soldier. He said he wanted to be a sniper since “playing armyâ€? as a kid, and said he knew within the ďŹ rst week of sniper school that he would graduate.

During the training, he said the only time that he was in doubt of passing was during the rapid ďŹ re exercise during Hurricane Irma. “You have to adapt to the weather behind the gun,â€? Gifford said.

He credits his previous unit for training him until he was ready. His goal now is to take the knowledge he has back to his unit. “Don’t come here unless you are prepared,� Gifford said.

South Chicago native Taylor said that he felt accomplished and relieved to graduate. He said the stalking exercises were the hardest because of the heat and humidity. He advised that that the secret to passing is not getting frustrated.

Soldiers who are interested in attending sniper school need to be resilient, Taylor continued. He said he prepared at his unit by taking every free day to train.

He waited six years for his sniper school application to be approved. “This class was unusual,� said Staff Sgt. Brian Moran, one of the 11 instructors at the school. “Normally, 48 to 52 percent of the students graduate.�

Last ďŹ scal year, 310 students attended sniper school and 140 graduated. “About 90 percent of the time, it’s mental fortitude that determines whether a student will fail or succeed,â€?

Moran added.

Even though only four of 46 graduated this class, Moran said he’s still happy that a new group of excellent snipers can go back to their units and hopefully change the prevailing thoughts about snipers by being proactive, seeking opportunities to train, and continuing to better themselves in their craft.

He added that Soldiers interested in being a sniper should know that the job is 95 percent observing and reporting, with 5 percent shooting. “It’s not the movies, you don’t shoot people daily, and there are no pats on the back for doing a good job,� said another instructor.

Robots, railguns, lasers to team with Soldiers on battlefield

LIVONIA, Mich. — It’s December and many are doing their holiday shopping or making a wish list of gifts they’d like to receive.

During the Future Ground Combat Vehicle Summit here earlier this month, Army acquisition professionals and program managers had their own wish lists that included an assortment of robots and ground combat vehicles meant to protect Soldiers and give pause to potential adversaries.

Over 7,000 were fielded in just the last decade, he noted. The challenge now is to move the most effective ones into programs of record.

Among these, he said, is the M-160 Robotic Mine Flail, which efficiently clears land mines using rotating chains that flail the ground. It is also rugged No Charge to You!

The M-160 made it into a program of record this year before the holidays, and a number are already involved in routeclearance missions in Afghanistan.

By 2025, dismounted Soldiers will conduct foot patrols alongside robots called Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport, or SMET, vehicles that carry rucksacks and other equipment that will lighten the Soldier load, McVeigh said.

In order to get these to the warfighter sooner rather than later, the Army is procuring them through an Other Transactional Agreement, or OTA, he said.

The OTA got the program rolling fast, with requirements out in April and a down-select six months later in November, he said. Four contracts were awarded for 20 vehicles each, which will be tested by Soldiers in two brigades until the end of next year. Low-rate initial production is expected to follow

with a production contract in place.

The requirements were limited to give manufacturers more flexibility in the trade-space, he said. The only firm requirements were that SMET be able to haul 1,000 pounds off-road, cover 60 miles in 72 hours and cost $100,000 or less each.

The OTA was used because Army leaders prioritized getting the weight off the backs of dismounted Soldiers, he noted.

Common Robotic System (Heavy) is designed to disarm or disable unexploded ordnance using a highly dexterous arm remotely controlled by a Soldier. The Army just published requests for information from industry for the wireless-range manipulator arm, McVeigh said.

By 2025, the Army sees ground troops conducting foot patrols in urban terrain with robots, called Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport vehicles, that carry rucksacks and other equipment alongside Soldiers. Overhead, unmanned aircraft will also serve as spotters to warn troops so they can engage the enemy on their own terms, according to the the Army’s new strategy on robotic and autonomous systems.

Feedback from industry on CRS-H has been good, he said. It is expected that by next summer, draft performance specifications will be issued, and it is hoped that fielding can begin as early as 2020. This system is also going the OTA route.

The Enhanced Robotics Payload is another explosives ordnance disposal robot. A request for proposal has been released, McVeigh. CONTINUED FROM 6 Mobile Protected Firepower Vehicle, Ground Combat Systems, said a request for proposal was released in late November for MPF. The MPF he envisions can be described as a light tank. It will be light in the sense that it will weigh less than half as much as an Abrams tank, which will allow two to fit inside a C-17 aircraft. That means its armor will be less than an Abrams.

The MPF will also sport a gun in the 105mm to 120mm range, similar to the ones on early versions of the Abrams, Dopp said.

It is expected that the MPF will provide infantry brigade combat teams with a long-range, direct-fire capability for forcible entry and breaching operations, he noted, so it is not by any stretch a tank replacement.

There will not be a lot of requirements other than MPF being light and powerful, he said. Army leaders are eager to quickly get it into the hands of Soldiers for testing.

A contract could be awarded by early FY19 with low-rate initial production to follow, he said.

Maj. Gen. John Charlton, commander, Army Test and Evaluation Command, said that although the Next Generation Combat Vehicle fielding isn’t expected until 2035, a lot of the components that may find their way onto the NGCV in one shape or another are being currently tested around the Army.

Two such systems that will likely inform development of NGCV, he said, are the Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station-Javelin and the Stryker Remote Weapons Station.

CROWS-J allows the warfighter to remotely engage targets with precision fire from the Javelin while on the move, he said. Stryker RWS is a 30mm cannon on an unmanned turret. Both systems keep the gunner inside the vehicle, in a less exposed area than the turret.

Electro-magnetic interference testing is now underway on the sensors and software, he said.

There are some challenges to overcome in putting this technology on the NGCV, he said, describing a few.

Although the gunner is tucked inside the vehicle, rounds must still be loaded and reloaded in the gun, which means being exposed to enemy fire and working in cramped conditions, he said.

Getting everything working correctly will require a lot of software development, he said. This is probably the most difficult challenge.

And finally, situational awareness could be lost with the crew fully buttoned up inside the vehicle, he said. This could be particularly bad in urban terrain where Soldiers cannot get good visuals of what’s around and above them.

The situational awareness issue could be addressed through adding sensors and cameras so the crew doesn’t feel so completely closed in, he noted.

OTHER FUTURE WEAPONS Charlton said several promising weapons are in the science and technology and testing stages.

Engineers are now designing extendedrange cannons that can be mounted on the Paladin and will fire much greater distances than current artillery, he said, noting that the distances are impressive but classified.

the NGCV, he said.

The challenges are now designing a breech in the gun system that can handle the enormous pressures and getting the APS software and sensors developed.

Also, the crew might be adversely affected by the enormous pressures, so some sort of dampening mechanism would be needed.

Another weapon that will eventually make its way to the battlefield is the highenergy laser, Charlton said.

The Army and Air Force are now out at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico using them to knock out air-toground and surface-to-air missiles, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles, he said.

A 300-kilowatt laser will be built and tested in the near future, he added.

“We want to ensure the lanes are clear when firing the laser,” he said. “We don’t want to take out one of our own satellites, so it will need to be equipped with an avoidance detection system.”

Lastly, Charlton said that an electromagnetic rail gun will be developed soon, but he’s not sure if it will find its way onto the NGCV. “But it will be on the battlefield in some shape or form,” he said.

7 The rail gun will shoot small, dense projectiles to distances of 30 kilometers at several times the speed of sound using electromagnetic pulses, he said. That will require some serious power, so initially it might have to be loaded on a large cargo truck.

JOINT DEVELOPMENT Dr. Dale Ormond, principal deputy, Research Directorate, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, said his office is working to ensure all of the laboratories across the Department of Defense are talking to each other, helping each other and avoiding duplication of effort.

The areas he’s particularly excited about are artificial intelligence paired with autonomy. Machines programmed for artificial learning will be able to collaborate much better with Soldiers and give commanders more options on the battlefield, he said.

Other promising areas are hypersonic weapons, he said, like the rail guns and lasers that the Army is working on.

The Hampton Roads community celebrated the holidays with free concerts by the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band and the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band, Dec. 4 through 9.

The Heritage of America Concert Band presented “Holiday Memories in Blue” and the TRADOC Band performed at various local schools, theaters and churches during their holiday concert series.

The bands embraced the holiday spirit with traditional songs like “Frosty the Snowman” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” encouraging the crowd to sing along.

For long-time concert-goers, Carol and John Wilson, coming to the concert made their holiday season complete.

“We have been coming to see the bands play for 45 years now,” said Carol. “We have a soft spot for the military and love the music they play. They’re such talented performers and are always so courteous.”

The Wilsons consistently recommend friends and family attend a performance by the concert bands, especially their holiday performances.

According to U.S. Army Cpl. James Jaeger, TRADOC band trumpet player, the band strives to reach all demographics with their traditional holiday concerts.

“We try to touch people in certain ways so everyone leaves our holiday concerts with a positive attitude,” said Jaeger. “We want people to walk about with that holiday spirit in their hearts.”

In keeping the festivities alive, Jaeger noted the Army band uses the holiday concerts to showcase the creativity the band adds to the typical holiday traditions.

Hoping to bring joy to the Hampton Roads community, Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ bands perform traditional and unique holiday carols to add to the spirit of the holidays.

Air Force Control Network ensures global mission success

for our 29 satellite operations centers as a conduit to get through to their satellites,” said Lt. Col. Terrill McCall, then 22nd Space Operations Squadron commander. “The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites that are in space providing weather data for our warfighters around the world, being able to forecast the opportunity for movements of forces and the operations around the world, would be one example of support that we provide.”

Master Sgt. Corey Spitler, Detachment 1, 23rd SOPS superintendent, says AFSCN functions much like a soccer squad. Players don’t just kick the ball from goal to goal. Instead, they make multiple passes down the field. Data flows from the user to the satellite, through the AFSCN, in much the same way. The unique thing is that it also works both ways; data can be transmitted back to the user as well. Eight satellite tracking stations, located in Hawaii, England, Guam, Diego Garcia, Greenland and three in the continental U.S., provide telemetry, tracking and commanding communications with the space vehicles during this intricate soccer match.

By TSgt Greg C. Biondo Minutes pass like hours as a skiequipped C-130 sits on a makeshift snow runway while supplies are unloaded at a remote outpost in Antarctica. The crew keeps the engines running for fear they won’t restart in the frigid environment.

The flight engineer eyes the clock as the time-on-ground limit nears in order to avoid the very real possibility of the aircraft’s fuel freezing. The plane slides down the tiny snow-strip and is airborne with seconds to spare. The weather brief before the mission, facilitated by polar orbiting satellites in the Air Force’s Satellite Control Network, which collect 24-hour weather imagery, provided the critical information needed to ensure mission success.

This is just one of the thousand successful operations that happen on land, air and sea everyday thanks to the AFSCN and their unique mission of providing access to more than 175 satellites.

“The importance of the weather satellites, as you can see stateside, would be the hurricanes,” said Spitler. “It’s for predictability and accurate prediction, so we can get accurate, near real-time data to users around the world.”

While Thule is the primary location for accessing polar orbiting satellites, the AFSCN is prepared for any scenario — even unforeseen events when the stations are unable to contact their space vehicles.

“The sun never sets on the AFSCN,” Spitler said. “It is definitely a team effort. When one [station] is going through maintenance or one is wanting to offload, for whatever reason, we work hand-in-hand with schedulers to make sure the mission is no fail. If one station is unable to pick up something, another station can pick that up.”

The ability of the satellite control network to sustain operations around the clock, all year long, is something not lost on crews who rely on those services to accomplish their mission — especially when that mission is delivering lifesustaining fuel and supplies to frigid Arctic and Antarctic outposts.

“Most of the time we’re giving gas to a camp and we need to know what the weather will be at take off time in order to gauge when we need to get out of there

— the weather capability portion of it is imperative,” said Capt. Zach McCreary, a C-130 pilot with the 109th Airlift Wing at Stratton Air National Guard Base in New York. “The communication piece of it is the other piece that we rely on, on a daily basis. In a C-130 we don’t have all the Gucci equipment that most of the other airframes do, so we rely on text capabilities. We rely on HF radios and, when need be, we even use phone patches, which is a ground based station which we can call via satellite phone and they can relay us to whichever base or whomever we need to talk to.”

Weather and communications can have a major impact on the outcome of any operation. With technology improving the warfighting capability of potential adversaries, the U.S. military knows the importance of maintaining superiority in the realms of space and cyberspace.

“You look at an example of not having space, not having cyber and that’s a bad day in the Air Force,” said McCall.

“There are many nations that are out there working feverishly to try to get to the point where they can get the high ground, as we often refer to it … so for us to be able to go after and to continue to advance that capability is absolutely a high priority across the board for DoD and national security.”

66th Operation Christmas Drop launches at Andersen AFB

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam The 66th iteration of Operation Christmas Drop took to the sky Dec. 11, 2017 as military leaders ceremoniously pushed the first pallet of donated toys, food, supplies and educational materials into a C-130J Super Hercules at Andersen Air Force Base.

The ceremony marked the continuation of the longest running Department of Defense humanitarian and disaster relief training mission, which delivers donated supplies to remote Pacific islands via lowcost, low-altitude airdrops from C-130 aircraft.

The mission is supported by U.S. Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard, which are joined by Japanese Air Self-Defense Force and Royal Australian Air Force aircrews, offering teams of the participating nations a unique airdrop training opportunity.

“We are truly humbled with the relationship Andersen (AFB) shares with the men and women of Yokota Air Base, our Andersen (AFB)-based air mobility command unit, the 734th Air Mobility Squadron and our international partners,”

said Col. Scott Hurrelbrink, 36th Wing vice commander. “While the training missions are conducted by maintenance and operations, it’s important to emphasize that this is truly a joint endeavor that includes raising awareness and collecting donations from the local community right here on Guam.”

The tradition began during the Christmas season in 1952 when a B-29 Superfortress aircrew saw islanders waving at them from the island of Kapingamarangi, 3,500 miles southwest of Hawaii. In the spirit of Christmas, the aircrew dropped a bundle of supplies attached to a parachute to the islanders below, giving the operation its name. Since its beginning, Christmas Drop has impacted more than 20,000 islanders annually, covering 1.8 million square nautical miles and more than 50 Micronesian islands.

“The role of military forces during any humanitarian assistance event is to rapidly respond with support to help mitigate human suffering and prevent further loss of life and property damage,” Master Sgt. For the first time, aviators assigned to the 374th Airlift Wing will fly the C-130Jmodel during Operation Christmas Drop. Utilizing new technology, the redesigned airframe eliminates the positions of navigator and the flight engineer, resulting in a smaller aircrew able to accomplish the same mission.

This allows for lower operation and support costs over the earlier C-130 models.

Demonstrating and executing lowcost, low-altitude drops alongside regional allies is just one example of the Air Force actively pursuing and participating in interoperability partner training to increase operational capabilities while ensuring stability in the Indo-Asia Pacific region.

“The 374th Airlift Wing, and more specifically, the 36th Airlift Squadron,

has transitioned to the newer C-130J Super Hercules over the last year, and we are proud to bring this aircraft and its improved capabilities to Operation Christmas Drop,” said Col. Sergio Vega Jr., 374th AW vice commander. “This year we will be able to fly farther, faster and with more cargo allowing us increased flexibility as we complete our mission and training objectives.”

Between sorties, more than 65,000 pounds of food, supplies, educational materials and toys will be dropped during the operation. The OCD committee raised more than $53,000 and received more than $20,000 in donated supplies for this year’s efforts to date.

“A lot of people come together to support such an amazing venture with either their donations or their personal time to ensure that this event is successful,” Gray said. “This is truly an amazing event that showcases the meaning of the holiday season.”

Airmen encouraged to update their vRED, SOES information

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) — Airmen should review and update their virtual Record of Emergency Data and their Servicemembers’ Online Election System information annually, before deploying and each time they experience a major life change, such as marriage or divorce, permanent change of station or birth of a child. vRED replaced the paper-based form in 2003 as the way for active, Guard and Reserve Airmen to provide personal emergency information.

“Accurate information helps ensure families are cared for during a crisis and prevents unnecessary delays,” said Maj. Pamela Nuila, Air Force’s Personnel Center Air Force Casualty Services chief. “Having upto-date information is critical when Air Force casualty officials need to contact family members when an Airman goes missing, suffers a serious illness or injury, or dies. It also assists with prompt casualty reporting and notification, as well as compassionate follow-on assistance to surviving family members.”

As important as the vRED is, recent data reveals that

more than 35 percent of Airmen across the Total Force have not reviewed or updated their vRED information within the last year.

“Delays in next of kin notification are usually associated with the vRED having incomplete or outdated information,” Nuila said. “It’s important that Airmen validate and update this information.”

The vRED can be accessed through myPers at https://mypers.af.mil/ or via the virtual Military Personnel Flight on the Air Force Portal. On the myPers home page, Airmen should click the “Update my virtual Record of Emergency Data” link and follow the instructions. On vMPF, select “Record of Emergency Data” at the bottom left of the screen. The form takes most people about 15 minutes to fill out and requires addresses and phone numbers for emergency contacts.

Along with the vRED update, SOES elections are equally important. Last August 2017, the Air Force began a 12-month roll out of SOES by birth month.

SOES enables Airmen to make automated Service members’ Group Life Insurance and Family SGLI coverage/beneficiary elections 24/7, 365 days a year via the milConnect application at www.dmdc.osd.mil/ milconnect.

With approximately 40,000 Total Force Airmen having a birthday each month, the Air Force should be quickly approaching 160,000 Airmen having selected their beneficiaries and certifying their elections.

However, as of Nov. 22, 2017 only 97,738 Airmen had updated and certified their elections.

“We’re asking commanders and first sergeants at all levels to stress the importance of having their Airmen log into SOES and update and certify their elections” said Nuila. “Airmen do not have to wait for their birth month to update SOES, especially if they experience a major life change such as marriage or divorce.”

Paper-based coverage levels and beneficiary elections on the SGLV 8283A, FSGLI, form and the SGLV 8286,SGLI, form are in effect until superseded by a SOES election. Should a tragedy occur prior to making a SOES election, the paper-based coverage amount and beneficiary(ies) will be certified for payment, ensuring the elections are properly enacted.

SOES also provides an administrative tool for human resources personnel, commanders and unit SOES administrators by giving them the ability to validate members’ SGLI elections and key SGLI data for a single individual or an entire unit. In addition, SOES provides casualty offices with a central source to obtain beneficiary and coverage information in the event of a casualty.

Airmen can access SOES via a .mil computer using their common access card or by using a personal computer or electronic device. Members can also use a Department of Defense self-service, or DS Logon (username/password), to access SOES without a CAC. Airmen must log into SOES at www.dmdc.osd.mil/ milconnect to designate an SGLI beneficiary, increase or decrease coverage or decline coverage.

Airmen can also visit myPers, select “Any” from the dropdown menu and enter “SOES” or ”vRED” in the search menu. Individuals who do not have a myPers account can request one by following these instructions.

Ready to fight anytime, anywhere: Army showcases rapid deployment in European exercise

By Spc. Hubert Delany ADAZI, Latvia — The Army maintains a high state of readiness across the globe to defend the nation, assure allies, and deter potential adversaries when the need arises. The Soldiers of 5th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley, Kansas, known as the “Long Knife Squadron,” recently tested this readiness during two rapid deployment drills in Eastern Europe.

Over the course of a week from Dec. 1-7, the Long Knife Squadron quickly moved armored vehicles and other critical equipment over 700 miles by rail from Poland to Latvia. The exercise combined military assets from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and the U.S. “It’s impressive, the speed at which coordination is made between NATO allies,” said 1st Lt. Kyle Bouchard, a Derry, New Hampshire native and the

executive officer for 5th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment’s “Tomahawk” Troop.

“With such a daunting task at hand, everybody was extremely quick to work together to overcome any obstacles along the way.”

The discipline that the Soldiers displayed in the face of extreme environmental conditions showed just how well trained and how hard working they are, Bouchard added. “Every Soldier in our ranks has given everything they got. I appreciate them, and I am very proud of them for that.”

Over the next few months, other units in 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team will be executing similar missions throughout Europe as part of their deployment to Atlantic Resolve, which is a U.S. mission to fulfill NATO commitments by rotating U.S.-based units throughout Europe.

Regiment, immediately conducted another — except this time, they only had 48 hours to deploy equipment and personnel, instead of week.

Once at the deployed location, Soldiers were also required to employ their equipment. This task included “zone reconnaissance,” which involved collecting information on opposing forces, terrain and possible routes to use to move through an area.

“This (exercise) proved that we are capable of conducting zone reconnaissance,” said 1st. Lt. Tyler Bobilya, a Fort Wayne, Indiana native and platoon leader in 5th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment,.

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher King, a Billings, Montana native and tank platoon sergeant, said he has worked with armored forces for more than 11 years. In that time, he has learned the importance of his role as a tanker in the grand scheme of military operations and reconnaissance.

“Our job is not just to fight as armored reconnaissance,” said King. “We paint a picture for the brigade commander to influence how he wants to negotiate the battle space.”

King emphasized that maintaining proficiency on his team’s equipment and the tactics necessary to be successful is critical to achieving success, should deterrence against external threats to America’s European allies and partner nations fail.

“There’s nothing that will change the pace of the battlefield quicker than the introduction of a tank into the fight,” said King, reflecting on a quote from his father, who also served with tanks.

“We are always supposed to be ready to fight at anytime and anywhere,” added Pfc. Shakir York, a Houston, Texas native and a cavalry scout in 5th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment. “This is good training. This kind of weather, this kind of place … it’s one of the best parts about being in the Army.”

Shellbank Track Closure

King Street and Armistead Gates under construction

The 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron will renovate the guard houses at the King Street and Armistead Gates.

The construction will be phased to minimize traffic impact.

The first phase of construction will affect two of the four inbound lanes and one of the two outbound lanes at the Armistead gate. This phase will also affect one inbound and one outbound lane of the King Street gate. Phase one of construction will last up to 60 days and begin on Nov. 27, 2017, at 9 a.m. Phase two of construction will last up to 57 days and is expected to begin Jan. 26, 2018, at 9 a.m. Phase two will affect the remaining two inbound lanes and one outbound lane at the Armistead gate, and the remaining inbound and outbound lane at the King Street gate.
