Local family ‘adopts’ service members for 30 years

As Janice Deaver and her daughter April Griffin prepare Thanksgiving dinner for their family and neighbors, they tell stories and share laughs at memories of years past. While most share stories about their relatives, this family shares stories of their “adopted” family, the ones they thank each year for their service to their country with a home-cooked meal.

For the past 30 years, the Deaver family has opened their home on Thanksgiving Day to “adopted” U.S. service members from the Hampton Roads community as part of the annual “Adopt-a-Service Person” program.

The program, hosted by the USO, has approximately 60 families in the local community each year “adopt” service members who are in training and are unable to go home for the holiday.

The Deaver family first heard of the program from an advertisement in the local newspaper. Griffin remembers being 16 years old when they brought home their first “adopted” service members and now had a 16-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son of her own as her family continues the tradition. Even though the family has no affiliation with the military, they couldn’t see sharing the holiday without

hosting service members and passalong the tradition of being thankful.

“My parents always had a full house, and it just seemed like such a good idea to show April that you give back,” said Deaver. “It makes my heart so happy to bring in these kids because they are so brave and so kind and it’s great to show my daughter and my grandkids that every year.”

Continuing the tradition of storytelling, Griffin and Deaver shared bouts of laughter as they remembered one year when a U.S. Army Soldier in Advanced Individual Training who participated in the program broke his glasses while playing football with Griffin’s children in the yard.

“We looked for the arm of his glasses for hours but had no luck,” said Griffin.

“Mom found the arm in the spring. I brought it to his graduation from AIT, and he just thought it was the funniest thing.”

With as many as nine service members welcomed into their home each year, Deaver struggles with the idea that some of their first Soldiers have recently retired from the Army within the 30 years since they first joined the program.

However, Griffin enjoys keeping in touch with the service members through social media.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing this as long as we have, but it’s just

become normal for us,” said Deaver.

“They are always welcome to come back to our family dinner if they are in the local area.”

For the service members they adopt, the program allowed them to be a part of a family—a home away from home for the holiday, said U.S. Army Private 1st Class Jalani James, 128th Aviation Brigade AIT student.

“Nowadays, many people will say, ‘Thank you for your service’ and ‘We are proud of what you do’ but I don’t think they extend their hand out as much as they extend their words,” said James.

“This family didn’t use their words, they let their actions speak for them, and they

invited us in. After speaking with them, I know they’re deeply rooted in their community, and they care, not just for the service members, but for the people that live near them.”

As six Soldiers, one U.S. Air Force Airman, twelve family members and neighbors squeeze around the table, they pass plates of turkey, ham, and stuffing, and continue to share stories and laughs until it is time to clean up and say goodbye to their new family members for now.

Puerto Rico relief efforts hit close to home

On Sept. 20, 2017, Iker Urruchi was on a ship off the coast of Seattle, constantly checking for news updates on his phone when he could get a signal.

Hurricane Maria had just made landfall on his hometown of Ponce, Puerto Rico, and the boatswain’s mate was trying to discover what was happening to his family.

A month and a half later, Urruchi boarded Military Sealift Command’s USNS Brittin at Joint Base Charleston, S.C., with approximately 80 other U.S. military, civilian and contracted personnel to deliver humanitarian supplies to the battered island.

The effects of both hurricanes Maria and Irma, who damaged the island just two weeks before, left the majority of the

population without power. Several units from across the Department of Defense, including members from the 690th Rapid Port Opening Element, 832nd Transportation Battalion, 597th Trans.

Brigade based at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Va., traveled to the Port of Ponce, Puerto Rico with generators, water and medical supplies to help those affected.

As soon as Urruchi discovered the Brittin was scheduled to head to Puerto Rico, he started reaching out to family and friends to find out what he could do to help.

“The ship started out with just a few hundred pieces of equipment or supplies, and then ended up fully loaded and scheduled to make multiple trips,” said Urruchi. “It’s home, and I want to be able to provide as much of that relief as possible.” » See PUERTO RICO | 6

relief supply transport mission held special meaning to military members with ties to Puerto Rico or who had experienced similar hardships CONTINUED FROM 5 For members like Urruchi, the mission meant bringing aid to their own families and friends, and for others, it was a means to help those who had experienced similar hardships.

RESTORING HOPE The Brittin arrived in Ponce, Puerto Rico on Nov. 3 where it would be docked several times over the next few weeks unloading supplies. After hurricanes Irma and Maria, Urruchi said the most difficult thing was not being able to communicate with family and friends. He said being part of the relief supply transport mission held meaning close to his heart, as his family lives in Ponce.

“I couldn’t speak to my family for two to three weeks after the storms hit,” said Urruchi. “When I finally was able to contact them, I found out they were fortunately not hit too hard, but other family and friends were struggling a lot more.”

Upon arriving in Puerto Rico for the first unload, Urruchi discovered things were much worse than his family had lead on, not wanting to worry him any more than he already was. According to Urruchi, although more than 70 percent of the island is still without power, many Puerto Ricans are hopeful with each ship’s arrival.

“In Puerto Rico, what we have on the island is all we have, so they’re not used to seeing this much military mobilization. It’s helping raise their spirits,” said Urruchi. “I definitely think it’s going to have a big visual and psychological impact on the people of Puerto Rico because they know they’re not alone.”

AN UNEXPECTED HOMECOMING While Urruchi was traveling to Ponce, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Eliezer Casas, 690th RPOE, 832nd Trans. Bn. Battalion, 597th Trans. Bde. distribution yard NCO in charge, was already in place, ready to unload the Brittin’s supplies. As a native Puerto Rican, Casas had just taken an unexpected trip home—one he had hadn’t made in 20 years. Though the circumstances of his return were not ideal, he remained optimistic about being able to help his community and family through humanitarian relief.

“People in Puerto Rico don’t have power, water, electricity or cash to acquire the things they need to survive,” said Casas. “So each of these shipments (are) going to help more and more people as we unload the electrical trucks and generators and try to get supplies to the people who need them the most.”

During his time on the island, Casas and his unit left the Port of Ponce to deliver pallets of water to those in Jayuya, a town roughly an hour away. This delivery helped the U.S. Army Soldiers better understand just

how much these supplies meant to the people of Puerto Rico, said Casas.

“As we’re getting ready to leave, a lady we gave water to hugged one of my Soldiers and cried, telling him ‘thank you’ in Spanish, and he started crying too because it touched his heart,” said Casas. “I explained to my Soldiers that all they see is the boat and everything coming off the ship, but you don’t see the impact you have on these people until you start delivering water and food to them.”

SHARED HARDSHIP Some on the Brittin also felt a deep connection to the mission, yet weren’t from Puerto Rico at all. Twelve years ago, Alfred Murray was working for the Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia in Germany, watching the news as Hurricane Katrina plowed through his family’s home in Long Beach, Mississippi, in August 2005. Being so far from home, Murray was powerless to help his wife and two children with the devastation they would endure as they, and several of their neighbors, lost their homes and most of their belongings.

“Our house was three blocks from the beach, and all the houses between the southern end of my street and the beach were completely destroyed,” said Murray.

“We had eight feet of water come through our home— just enough to ruin everything, but we were just lucky enough we were able to rebuild what we had.”

Due to logistics and lack of transportation, it took Murray a month to get home to his family. By the time he returned home, his wife was able to acquire a camper to live in while they worked to rebuild. In order to afford the construction repairs, Murray got a job as the chief mate on the Brittin, while his wife made most of the repairs.

“There were no contractors available to get the job done, so my wife ended up doing most of the

contracting herself, which is what most people ended up doing,” said Murray. “In a disaster like that you rely on family and neighbors and people that know how to do things, and you just fix it yourself the best that you can.”

Now as captain of the Brittin, Murray is in charge of taking the ship loaded with relief aid equipment from organizations across the Department of Defense, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Peninsula Emergency Management Agency and other mission partners to Puerto Rico.

According to Murray, it took several years for their home to be fully restored, while many neighborhoods still remain in shambles. Although his home has been fully repaired, he still remembers the pain and struggle his family and neighbors went through after enduring such destruction.

“I have been through the same things the people in Puerto Rico are going through now, so I understand how difficult it is and how long it is going to take them to rebuild,” said Murray. “There’s not much I can do on the mainland, but I am fortunate in that my trade gives me this opportunity to bring aid to the people that need it the most.”

MOVING FORWARD With Murray at the helm, the Brittin left the Port of Ponce on Nov. 7, bound for Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. Urruchi and the personnel aboard returned to Puerto Rico roughly 10 days later with a new shipment, while Casas and his Soldiers remained on the island, waiting to unload another vessel in the coming days.

As the Brittin and other vessels continue to take humanitarian relief supplies to Puerto Rico, members of the ships’ crews and service members on the ground remain steadfast, delivering support and helping the resilient islanders restore their homes and lives.

Elementary students learn how to be ‘heroes’

General Stanford Elementary School students experienced the military lifestyle first-hand during “Heroes Week” at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., Nov. 13-17, 2017.

The designated week honors U.S. service members, educates students on military culture and celebrates what it means to be a military family.

Students had the opportunity to interact with Fort Eustis Soldiers, learn about different military vehicles and even had the chance to perform a physical training test.

Throughout the week, the school encouraged students to dress-up according to themes that empowered

them to follow their dreams. On Monday, students wore capes on “Cape-able day” and on Tuesday, they “Dressed As [Their] Future Self.”

On the final day of Heroes Week, U.S. Army Soldiers and first responders spoke to students about their importance in the community, how they serve community members and why they do what they do.

Emergency and military vehicles, such as cargo vehicles, fire trucks, helicopters and military police cars were also on display for students to learn about.

Through this event, organizers hope the week of learning about the military lifestyle and interacting with service members may help develop future generations of “heroes.”

THE WARRIORS Two U.S. Air Force Airmen from Joint Base Langley-Eustis competed and placed in the Air Force Alpha Warrior Final Battle tness competition in San Antonio, Nov. 11, 2017.

Alpha Warrior is a program that allows military members and civilians to train and compete in obstacle installments. Langley Air Force Base recently had an Alpha Warrior battle rig installed, allowing JBLE Airmen to train and qualify at home station for the nal battle.

Langley AFB competitors, 2nd Lt. Nicole Mitchell and Airman 1st Class Trevor Puerile, not only competed in the 32-obstacle nal battle together, but they also trained and supported one another in preparation for the event. After returning from the challenge and placing rst and third in their respective divisions, the 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs Of ce interviewed the competitors.

Alpha Warrior: Airman 1st Class Trevor Puerile Hometown: Mount Upton, New York.

Years in the U.S. Air Force: One and a half years Reason for joining: Puerile joined the Air Force to travel and take advantage of debt free educational opportunities as well as other bene ts. He actually had to take a break from school to train for Alpha Warrior.

Alpha Warrior diet: “I have a semi-strict diet most of the time. I don’t eat fast food or drink soda. I usually just eat chicken and sh, and try not to have too many snacks.

I break my meals up into six meals a day; they’re little though. They’re only 361 calories per meal.”

That’s a speci c amount of calories; 361…: “There’s a whole equation to get that number. I do it so much, I don’t have to think about it anymore, but it’s a lot of protein. I’m also a really picky eater. I don’t like

macaroni and cheese and I don’t like pizza. Well, there is one type of pizza I like, but you can only get it in New York. My friends used to pick on me all the time because I don’t eat stuff like that.”

Alpha Warrior training: Puerile worked out ve days a week, three to four hours per day. His workouts included: High intensity interval training, six to eight mile runs, practicing on Alpha Warrior obstacle course six rounds per session, rock climbing and swimming, which he wished he did more.

BEHIND THE WARRIOR What’s your motivation?: “I just like being in shape. I like to push myself to limits. People say I’m a spider monkey. I’ve always liked climbing and just doing crazy stuff. I started doing it for fun. Like, when I rst showed up here and the actual Alpha Warrior people were here, I went through (the rig) and just messed around. I was the only one to make it through the course (that wasn’t an Alpha Warrior). I nished at a minute 38 seconds; it was pretty rough. I started practicing and it became about the technique. I got down to 52 seconds and quali ed for Texas.”

How did you stay motivated?: “I had my buddy working out with me. He was better at some stuff and I was better at other stuff, so we’d help motivate each other. I also had my leadership always telling me ‘no pressure’; that was motivating too because I’m kind of new here.”

Puerile added that about 30 people from his unit came to support him in qualifying for the nal Alpha Warrior competition. His ight chief and two friends were also at the nal competition in San Antonio.

What was it like when you got to the final competition?: “When I was on my way there, I was a little nervous and thought maybe I wasn’t going to make it through. Then I got there and saw some of the obstacles and some of the other people going through, and I thought, ‘Okay, maybe I have a chance. I felt a lot more con dent after I was there.”

What was going through your head when you got third place?: “Not much; I just thought it was really cool. I was wondering what my command was going to say when I got back. My other ight chief actually texted me ‘good job.’ My ight chief that was with me told everyone. I didn’t think about it too much; I just wanted to get back and go to bed, to be honest.”

What did people say when you got back?: “As soon as I came in the squadron, everyone came up and shook my hand and said ‘good job.’ They joked around with me saying ‘If I did it, I would have gotten better than third.’

A lot of people are actually coming to me now asking if I can pace them for their (physical training) test.”

What did your leadership’s support mean to you?: “If you go through all that hard work, it feels like it’s for nothing, if no one notices. Say the commander didn’t give me this time and I was working my butt of every day after work missing out on sleep and stuff like that, I think that would have affected my work a little. It would have been rough and stressful not knowing there where people that were supporting me.”

What advice do you have for others?: “You’re either going to do it or you’re not going to do it. You have to be 100 percent going towards it. If you’re going to do it, just work your butt off, practice and keep in mind that it’s not just all strength, you’ve got to work on technique too.”

Alpha Warrior diet: “That never changes; it’s been an on-going struggle. I don’t eat different when I train; I probably should, I just don’t. I don’t eat fast food and I don’t drink soda as well; that ended in high school.

Anything that has a drive-thru is pretty much what I avoid. It’s about balancing what’s good for you, and avoiding the bad stuff, but sometimes you just got to give in.”

Alpha Warrior training: Weight lifting, running, high intensity interval training and practicing on Alpha Warrior rigs and at Ninja Warrior gyms. Mitchell and Puerile also dedicated additional time to travel to larger gyms.

“Going to other gyms whether they were an hour or three hours away de nitely bene ted so much more. It helped with grip strength, it helped get my hands less sensitive to that kind of equipment and the type of movements.”

BEHIND THE WARRIOR What’s your motivation?: “Just knowing what goals I’m trying to reach, I can’t reach them if I don’t do anything.

That’s my main motivation; I know the goals I want to hit and I can’t get there if I don’t attempt to.”

Did you ever have an off day where you felt unmotivated to go? “Always; especially when your couch is calling.

Having a good partner like Airman 1st Class Peurile, he’s always motivated to work out and do more and keep going, so he de nitely kept me a oat to keep going, working out and getting prepared for all this.”

What about the three hour drive; that must have been difficult: “It was fun though; I was excited to go because I always wanted to try some of the equipment they had.

It wasn’t like ‘dang I have to go to this gym,’ I was like ‘I want to go; I’m excited to try all this stuff.’ It made the three hour drive so much easier just because of the excitement; it (was) like a kid going to Disneyland.”

Did your unit support you?: “With my unit, every time I saw someone in the hall they’d say ‘look at that Alpha Warrior walking by.’ It was humbling to think that people were actually keeping track of what I was doing.”

Did you have support while you were there too?: “Of course my wife; she unfortunately was in of cer training school while I was away; so she via text, phone call and Facetime gave me support constantly. My family that lives in San Antonio was actually able to be there when I was doing the course, so that made it 20 times better.

Just having them there was the icing on top of the cake.

Having that support just pushes you further and gets you through harder times.”

Did seeing them in the crowd help?: “I couldn’t see anybody when I was doing the course, but I heard my mom. She has an Asian accent, so she stands out

over everybody. I could hear my sister. I could hear my nephew, so just hearing the support and hearing it from people I didn’t even know, that was motivating. I remember I was tired at one point and I was close to either nishing or close to getting to the next course and someone said ‘keep going,’ and I took a break at one point and stopped and put my hands on my knees, and they were like ‘come on you got this,’ so I got up.”

How did it feel when you found out you placed first?: “I didn’t know I placed rst. (Other competitors) had the advantage of testing the course the day before the event, but I ew in the day of the event, so I wasn’t able to go on the course. I just wanted to have fun, and I wanted to nish. I didn’t know my time and I went to go check the paper and I was like, ‘Oh, I think I won; I’m on the top, I’m assuming…’ I was surprised, I was really surprised; there were a lot of good competitors talking about how they did and I just thought, ‘I hope I do as well as them.’”

You mentioned goals a lot; what’s the next one? “My next goal is to do Ninja Warrior. I‘ll see how far I get and keep going until I can’t do it anymore.”

Do you think the Air Force helped you get to this point in any way?: “If it wasn’t for Alpha Warrior, then I don’t know if I would ever try to do Ninja Warrior. The Air Force de nitely helped me in that aspect of getting me to different goals and introducing me to a new competition style. I did track for eight years, so I need to compete in something. I needed to work to something.”

Langley Hospital renovated

In order to provide the Joint Base Langley-Eustis community with the best care possible, the 633rd Medical Group has evolved its facilities.

On Nov. 6, 2017, the medical group finished the last of its renovation projects started in 2014, with the completion of a new Radiology department. The renovations help revitalize U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley’s facilities and improve service in support of growing operational mission needs.

“We had a mobile MRI unit outside so that patients wouldn’t have to go to Portsmouth,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Brandon Tolson, 633rd Medical Group MRI NCO in charge. “That being said, having the MRI unit outside came with its own challenges, thus the need for a new indoor facility.”

The old computerized tomography location was completely gutted and rebuilt into a brand new MRI section.

This was also fitted with a state of the art MRI scanner allowing all operations to be combined into an effective, modern suite.

“We are anticipating that this is going

to increase our patient throughput; 100 patients a week,” said Col. Mark Nassir, 633rd Medical Group commander. “It’s going to be fantastic to have this new MRI capability for all those patients.”

The 633rd MDG has a medical team of about 1,400 personnel that deliver comprehensive medical care, focusing on the specific needs of each patient. They serve a population of approximately 40,000 active duty members, dependents and retirees, and approximately 110,000 patients in the local area of Hampton.

Other radiology facility upgrades include: an extension of the medical mall reception and waiting areas, which can now accommodate over 40 radiology patients and a CT suite that includes two CT scanning rooms and dressing rooms for patient convenience and comfort.

According to Tolson, the new MRI suite will help expedite the rate at which patients’ needs are met, allowing the medical team to help more patients.

With these upgrades, the 633rd MDG aims to continue their tradition of providing exceptional health care in their newly renovated facility.

AF implements changes to improve law enforcement database reporting

By Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Air Force’s review of its reporting processes to civilian law enforcement in the Devin P. Kelley case has prompted immediate actions to correct reporting deficiencies and prevent future occurrences.

The Air Force’s review and corrective actions will continue over the next several months as the broader Department of Defense review proceeds.

Preliminary findings by the Air Force Inspector General confirmed the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and Security Forces personnel then assigned at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, did not report required information to

civilian law enforcement in the Kelley case. The review also found the error in the Kelley case was not an isolated incident and similar reporting lapses occurred at other locations. Although policies and procedures requiring reporting were in place, training and compliance measures were lacking.

The Air Force OSI has already implemented corrective measures to ensure compliance with reporting requirements to civilian law enforcement.

In addition, Air Force Security Forces have also implemented several corrective measures and remaining actions will be completed in the next few weeks.

leadership requirement at the field, regional and headquarters levels to verify that information from applicable cases is registered with the FBI’s National Crime Information Center ’s Interstate Identification Index.

Additionally, supporting software, checklist and training changes were made to support the new procedures.

Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein directed OSI and Security Forces to review all Air Force records with reportable offenses across the Air Force back to 2002. In order to complete the review and implement

corrective measures, two task forces comprised of 30 members from each organization are aggressively working to ensure 100 percent compliance.

Air Force officials are correcting all identified deficiencies as they are discovered and reporting them to civilian law enforcement. The full review will be completed over the next several months.

The Air Force will continue to take steps to identify and remedy shortfalls as the review continues. The Air Force IG is closely monitoring all corrective actions and the ongoing review of records to assess progress and report to Air Force leadership.

General Lengyel’s priorities: readiness, people, innovation

By Sgt. 1st Class Jim Greenhill TAJI, Iraq — Being ready to fight and being lethal when we do, taking care of our people and fostering an innovative culture throughout the National Guard are the priorities Air Force Gen. Joseph Lengyel stressed to troops during Thanksgiving holiday visits.

Army Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Kepner, senior enlisted advisor to the chief of the National Guard Bureau, accompanied Lengyel for the eight-day visit with troops in six nations within the U.S. European Command, U.S. Central Command and U.S. Africa Command.

Citizen-Warriors serving in Germany, Qatar, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq and Djibouti are executing missions as diverse as the host nations’ differing geographies, climates and challenges.

The National Guard is America’s military first responder in times of crisis in the homeland — a role enabled by its primary mission: providing ready forces to the Army and the Air Force.

Thus more than 19,000 Guardsmen and women are serving shoulder-toshoulder with active duty troops on every continent — including Antarctica — today.

Lengyel and Kepner saw Soldiers and Airmen serving at every level — from headquarters support to combatant commanders to individuals deployed in theater.

The chief of the National Guard Bureau and his senior enlisted advisor met with Air Guard members on the flight line in Qatar; served Thanksgiving dinner to members of all services, civilians and contractors in Bagram and Kandahar, Afghanistan; and thanked the National Guard, active duty and Reserve members of a helicopter unit whose quick actions recently saved the lives of four service members hit by an improvised explosive device.

The two senior leaders joined troops in chow halls for meals throughout their visits in theater; they met with hundreds of service members at a time in town hall meetings — and with individual troops everywhere; they took part in promotion ceremonies, recognitions and re-enlistments.

In Iraq, they witnessed the live

firing of a base defense system and discussed the challenges of maintaining communications networks, installing infrastructure, providing force protection and other missions with enlisted Soldiers.

“Spending time with troops deployed overseas or engaged in domestic response missions in the homeland is the most rewarding thing I get to do,” Lengyel said. “The extraordinary professionalism and capabilities of our troops motivates and humbles me.”

Regardless of where they are stationed or deployed, the troops share the responsibility of maintaining personal and unit readiness, building lethality, taking care of people and creating innovative solutions to fast-changing, complex challenges, Lengyel said.

In a profession whose members have sworn an oath indicating our willingness to sacrifice everything up to and including our lives, the mission comes first, Lengyel said. Threats are numerous, including failed nation states, non-state actors, terrorism and transnational organized crime — which means troops must maintain the highest state of readiness at the individual and unit level for no-notice missions.

Readiness and lethality are also priorities emphasized by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.

“You’ve got to be lethal in your military occupational specialty or career field, and you’ve got to be excellent in your core competency,” Command Sgt. Maj. Kepner told troops, emphasizing that excellence in non-combat roles is as important as excellence in combat arms roles, because every piece of the organization affects the effectiveness of the whole.

The National Guard’s readiness is high and increasing, Lengyel said.

While about 19,000 Citizen-Warriors are serving globally and about 10,000 in the homeland any given day, this is significantly lower than the peak 100,000 overseas and 50,000 responding to Hurricane Katrina during the first decade of the new century. “Though clearly there are exceptions, the preponderance of our force is not overtasked,” Lengyel said.

When Lengyel and Kepner asked troops about the operational tempo, they more frequently heard questions about opportunities to do more deployments than concerns about doing too much.

“We owe you, your families and your employers predictability — the ability to have both a civilian life and a military life,” Lengyel told troops. “I don’t ever want to put you in a place where you feel you have to make a choice between continuing your military career and your civilian life. We have to enable you to balance the two.”

Both leaders emphasized how the unique nature of the National Guard contributes to the Joint Force, primarily through the civilian-acquired skills, diverse life experience and maturity Guard members bring to their military roles, which tends to foster the kind of innovation Lengyel would like to see more of throughout the component.

“Innovation is in our DNA,” Lengyel said. “It’s who we are: You leave it better than you found it.”

Lengyel encouraged innovative thinking, even when it might make us individually uncomfortable, a standard

11 he applies to himself: An F-16 pilot, he nevertheless knows the day may come when technology replaces pilots. “If all you’re trying to do is to hold on to what you have, then you’re failing,” he said.

“You aren’t growing, and you will be overtaken by change. We can’t afford that as individuals or as a force.”

The National Guard fights America’s wars, secures the homeland and builds enduring partnerships at the local, state or territory, federal and international levels. The three key missions overlap: For example, securing the homeland builds readiness to fight America’s wars — and building partnerships increases the National Guard’s contributions to both missions.

General Lengyel is the 28th Chief of the National Guard Bureau. A member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, his responsibilities include coordinating the resourcing, training and equipping of the 448,000 members of the Army and Air National Guard and leading the Bureau, which supports the National Guard in the 50 states, three territories and District of Columbia, and acts as the nexus between federal and state equities.

Airman seeks to build a generation of lifesavers

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIXLAKEHURST, N.J. (AFNS) — Senior Airman Selina N. Okyere has one goal in her life.

“I’m trying to teach the whole nation (of Ghana) to know basic life-saving skills,” said Okyere.

That’s no small undertaking; the Republic of Ghana is about the size of the state of Oregon and has a population of approximately 29 million people.

For Okyere, this goal is personal: she was born in Ghana.

“People die in Ghana because the people around them don’t know basic first aid,” said Okyere. “It’s crazy when you hear about someone dying and it was something simple – that could’ve been prevented.”

It took joining the New York Army National Guard’s 69th Infantry Battalion in 2012, and taking her first combat lifesaver course, for Okyere to decide on making this her life’s purpose.

The course was an epiphany for Okyere.

She realized what she learned could be taught in Ghana.

“On the battlefield, you don’t have doctors or medical professionals following you, we take care of our battle buddies. So why can’t we teach someone how to apply pressure, or a tourniquet if someone is bleeding, or do CPR?” So after Okyere received her U.S. citizenship, courtesy of her military service, she began working on how she could train the average Ghanaian with those life-saving skills.

According to Okyere, there is definitely a need for this training because in Ghana, very few people outside the medical field know life-saving, or even basic first aid skills. This includes both police and fire departments, and the military.

“I spoke to the police and firefighters and they said this is the type of education they need to know,” said Okyere.

Outside a major city in Ghana, the closest clinic or hospital can be an hour and a half away. Even for people living in large cities, congested traffic can mean an ambulance or taxi takes 45 minutes to get to the hospital. In Okyere’s hometown of Kumasi – a city of more 1.7 million people

– she said if your injury is life threatening, chances are you will die before you make it to the hospital.

“Your life really depends on bystanders, because the most they can do is get you in a car,” said Okyere. “It’s between you and your god if you survive.”

And if you do survive and make it to a hospital, there are still no guarantees.

“I did a survey of the clinics in my area and some of them don’t have any emergency room nurses. A big clinic near where I lived had only one. You can’t expect that person to work a 24-hour shift, or seven days a week.”

For Okyere, the solution is simple…

Teach people basic life-saving techniques so in an emergency, they can step in and provide first aid until help arrives.

“I believe you don’t have to be a health professional to save a person’s life,” she said.

During her time in the New York Guard, she started investigating ways to raise money for her plan and decided to create a 501© (3) nonprofit organization.

In 2016, that organization, Global Life Savers, was granted both incorporated and 501 status. It was also the same year she transferred to the 514th Air Mobility Wing as a crew chief with the 514th Maintenance Squadron.

The organization’s vision is, “Empowered people saving lives.” Their mission is advocacy and education, resourcing and skill development.

Okyere’s big push is to raise money for training aids, such as CPR manikins and patient simulators, as well as first aid kits for every school.

“I want to start in elementary schools, teaching children basic life-saving techniques – I want to build a generation of life savers,” Okyere said.

To accomplish that, she took her message to Ghanaian government. On Sept. 30, 2016, Okyere spoke with Nana Akufo-Addo while he was campaigning for the Ghanaian presidency.

Her meeting with him paved the way to a meeting with cabinet members.

“I spoke to the minister of communications – he was very interested,” she said.

ministers during a training mission to Ghana in December 2017.

Her long-term goals include getting supplies, beds and other basic hospital supplies. She has also put her own money toward realizing her dream.

“I have purchased six blocks of land in Kumasi,” she said. “It is my dream to create an [Emergency Medical Technician] school to specifically train nurses and other people because they lack the basic life-saving training in schools,” said Okyere.

Okyere is looking to raise $500,000 to build the school. Once built, she will then turn her attention to staffing the school.

“I’m looking at bringing nurses over here [to the U.S.] to get the education so they can go back and teach at the school,” Okyere said.

To accomplish this, Okyere is exploring partnering with American medical schools and hospitals while investigating other partnerships.

One of the groups Okyere is talking to is the European Resuscitation Council. The ERC’s goals mirror Okyere’s in that they look at improvements in science, research, education and implementation, and make those skills available to everyone.

In the meantime, Okyere has assembled a group back in Ghana to take those lifesaving skills on the road.

“When I was in Ghana, my brother, who is a nurse, got some people together from his hospital and I gave a CPR and basic life-saving skills class,” she said.

“Then we went to churches, schools and sporting events to teach people about first aid.”

The 30 minute classes teach the basics of first aid. So far, Okyere has taught multiple classes each trip she’s taken to her homeland, with more trips scheduled in coming months.

The training is paying off.

In May, Okyere said her group went to the town of Ejisu Asaman to give a series of classes. Soon after, one of the students used those skills and saved an individual who had a heart attack. In the past, because the village is located in a remote part of Ghana, that person would have died. This time, because of the training Okyere’s group gave, that individual lived.

“They did the right thing and saved the person’s life,” said Okyere.

With that life saved, Okyere is one step closer to realizing her goal.

Proud Navajo sailor follows her people’s path

AT SEA ABOARD USS NIMITZ — When Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Denise Alamo introduces herself to other people from the Dine or Navajo tribes in their native language, the introduction translates to: “Hello, my name is Denise. I’m Towering House Clan, born for Tangle Clan, my maternal clan is Salt People, and my paternal clan is Coyote Cross Path.”

“In Dine culture, you must know what your four clans are because they make who you are,” Alamo said. “For instance, when I introduce myself to another Dine, I would say my clans in the following order: my mother ’s clan, my father ’s clan, my maternal grandfather ’s clan, and paternal grandfather ’s clan.

A proud Navajo woman, Alamo also is a proud U.S. Navy sailor, assigned to Destroyer Squadron 9 of Carrier Strike Group 11 as an operations specialist.

She’s serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz on a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific. Since 1994, the Navy has reserved November to celebrate and honor Native Americans and Alaska Natives.

Throughout her 18-year career, Alamo said, she has crossed paths with several other sailors who belong to her tribe. Military service is fast becoming a tradition in her family; her brother is serving in the Marine Corps and her grandfather was a Navy Seabee. Alamo said his service motivated her to join the Navy. “[My grandfather] always talked about traveling and seeing different parts of the world,” she explained. “I also wanted to travel. Being a Native American sailor holds much integrity and pride back on the reservation.”

EARLY LIFE

Alamo grew up on the Dine Nation Reservation, an area near Sweetwater, Arizona. Her family owned two houses; one was near the main road in Sweetwater, and the other was more remotely snuggled in the Carrizo Mountains. During the school year, she said, they lived in the house on the main road. Come summer, the family moved to the isolation of the mountain house, where they herded livestock and raised crops.

“Our nearest neighbor was about a mile away,” Alamo said. “That house had no electricity or running water. We had a farm that we maintained during harvest season, and we planted fruits and vegetables such as corn, apricots, grapes, strawberries, watermelon, cabbage, tomatoes and avocados.”

Alamo’s Navy life and her life on the reservation share some similarities. While deployed, she trades her

life on land for a life in a more secluded environment.

Just as up in the mountains, the ocean distances her from grocery stores, movie theaters and other home comforts. The many customs and traditions that are so heavily ingrained in the Navy also mirror Alamo’s way of life on the reservation.

Her grandparents enjoyed attending ceremonies and traditional dances, so during her childhood Alamo attended many dances, she said. And just as her grandparents ensured the traditions of her people were passed on to her, she added, she proudly passes on Dine tradition to her children.

PROUD OF HER HERITAGE

“I’m proud to be Dine, and that I know my language, culture and tradition,” Alamo said. “Dine people are also called the ‘Holy People’. We have many taboos that we are told to abide by. However, that tradition is dying with the younger generation. I tend to pass on the taboos of our tribe on to my kids along with the folk tales and many stories of Coyote the Trickster. I will also make sure that they know their clans.”

Alamo said she draws inspiration and strength from her people, and that she employs them to inspire her throughout her Navy career. A saying in her tribe translates to “In beauty I walk,” she added.

“To me this means, ‘No matter what obstacles are thrown at you, always strive to better yourself professionally and personally,’” she said.

Holiday Card Lane Contest

The Army Community Service Program is hosting the 19th Annual Fort Eustis Holiday Card Lane (HCL) contest until Jan. 3, 2018. The contest will be at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum’s fence on Washington Boulevard. Judging will be conducted Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The HCL ceremony will be held in the Transportation Museum Auditorium, Dec.14, at 1 p.m.

Marriage Enrichment Program

The Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel is hosting a Joint Base Langley-Eustis community-wide Marriage Enrichment Program. Sessions meet Thursday evenings, from 6 to 8 p.m., Sept 14, 2017 through May 17, 2018, in the RMC Lounge, 923 Lee Boulevard, Ft. Eustis. The Marriage Enrichment sessions are on “Making Your Marriage Your Priority! Love, Honor, and Cherish.” The Marriage Enrichment program is for married and engaged couples, spouses of deployed, Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard and Retirees. U.S. Army Officer Candidate School Alumni Association 2018 reunion

The U.S. Army Officer Candidate School Alumni Association will host a reunion from March 25-29, 2018, at the Columbus Marriott Hotel, 800 Front Avenue, Columbus, Ga. 31901. The association represents all Army officers commissioned through any Officer Candidate School, regardless of previous locations or branch affiliation. The event will include a Hall of Fame induction ceremony, reception, and formal dinner, including the presentation of the Patterson Award.
