We then held a Rededication Ceremony at Seay Plaza on Fort Eustis where we not only buried a time capsule to be opened in 2118, but we honored Sergeant William Seay, who was awarded a Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. We also held a special tribute to all of our Vietnam veterans during a 50th Vietnam War Anniversary recognition ceremony. Most recently, we celebrated with our families, coworkers and friends at the Army Ball. Now, we get to celebrate with you! The Black Daggers Global warriors By USASOC ARMY.MIL
For almost three-quarters of a century, highly trained groups of Soldiers have been inserted behind enemy lines to disrupt the movement of enemy troops and supplies to the front lines. These brave Soldiers have frequently used parachutes as a means to infiltrate without being detected. Although most of the airborne forces of the world still use round parachutes, some specialized military free-fall units use ram-air airfoils, which provide control of speed and direction, as their primary means of infiltration. Descending from the skies at 12,500 feet, traveling nearly 120 miles per hour, free-fall parachuting is the closest humans have ever come to actually flying. For the Black Daggers, the official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team, that’s a typical Monday morning. During their two-mile

Composed of volunteers from throughout Army special operations, the Black Daggers have diverse backgrounds and are skilled in various military specialties including Special Forces, Rangers, civil affairs, psychological operations, and signal and support. With an average age of 33 and an average number of free-fall jumps at 560, the team represents the professionalism and dedication of Army special operations forces. Although they are capable of performing both high-altitude, low-opening and highaltitude, high-opening jumps, the principle technique demonstrated by the Black Daggers is the HALO. This form of stealth insertion used to land troops and equipment behind enemy lines was first conducted in combat during the Vietnam War by the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group, a multiservice U.S. special operations unit in which Army Special Forces
played a large role. After exiting an aircraft at high altitudes, sometimes upwards of 25,000 feet, where oxygen is scarce, the jumpers fall to the earth, reaching terminal velocity before deploying their parachutes and gliding in under enemy radar. The Black Daggers use the military variant of the ram-air parachute. These flexible-wing gliders allow a free-fall parachutist the ability to jump with more than 100 pounds of additional equipment attached to him. In addition to the extra weight, the jumper must also withstand high winds, frigid temperatures and low oxygen levels, all of which require the jumper to be highly skilled.

The Matthew Jones House The Matthew Jones House is a historic plantation house located on Fort Eustis. The house sits on a hill toward the northern end of Mulberry Island, overlooking the James River. It was built around 1725 as a one-anda-half-story frame dwelling with brick chimneys and later underwent two major renovations. During the first renovation, in 1730, the walls were bricked in and a shed room and porch tower were added. During the second, in 1893, the house was raised to a full two stories. In 1918 the house and its surrounding land were acquired by the U.S. government for the establishment of an army post. By the end of the twentieth century, the Matthew Jones House had fallen into grave disrepair. In 1993 it was preserved and rehabilitated by the National Park Service in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Today it serves as an architectural museum, and is the oldest house in the Department of Defense inventory. U.S. Army Photo
128th Aviation Brigade The 128th Aviation Brigade is made up of three battalions: The 1st Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment. The 1st Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment trains Military Occupational Specialties 15F, J, N, R, S, Y, the Warrant Officer Technician (151A) Basic and Advanced Courses, and the Armament Officer Courses (SQI-E) for the AH-64 Apache and OH-58D Kiowa Warrior weapon systems. The 2nd Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment trains MOSs 15B, D, G, K, T and U. The 1st Battalion 222nd Aviation Regiment is the student battalion with the mission of shaping the student Soldiers into members of the Aviation Branch through the lessons of Aviation Safety, Army Values, Warrior Tasks, Battle Drills, and a solid physical training program. The 128th Aviation Brigade carries on the proud tradition of those who have gone before ensuring training is realistic, relevant, and rigorous enabling graduates to make an immediate positive impact at their first duty assignment.

Third Port

A 40-acre pier complex, known as Third Port, houses U.S. Army vessels in a deep-water port, providing safe harbor for the watercraft fleet. Although mostly used for training personnel in vessel operations and cargo loading, Third Port is an operational pier for the U.S. Army to train in deployment readiness and recovery. The isolated area around the port offers a unique training environment for conducting tactical training. Also, with limited harbors in the surrounding area, civilian vessels are rarely seen near the training zone, lessening the impact on the daily exercises conducted offshore. Third Port is regularly used for training exercises during joint service training and is open to all branches of the U.S. military. Although, heavily used for training personnel, the pier also allows boats to be docked in order to make repairs and to perform routine maintenance.

Fishing at Browns Lake
Catch and release fishing is allowed at Brown’s Lake on Fort Eustis, but only from the pier. Patrons are not permitted to launch boats or kayaks off the shorelines to fish on the lake, as doing so would cause disturbance of the lake sediment. Manpower shortage impacts 633rd Medical Group services
The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned. In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled at the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category. In accordance with Department of Defense guidance regarding defending installations, Fort Eustis will implement a traffic calming serpentine as a measure to increase the installation’s security posture May 1, 2018, on Washington Blvd outbound lanes. The serpentine will reduce the number of outbound lanes from three to two. This will impact outbound traffic, especially during rush hour. The serpentine will remain in place until completion of the Active Vehicle Barrier project which is expected in the month of August 2018.

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
