Children planted pinwheels as a national symbol of child abuse prevention, and to bring awareness to the issues of child abuse at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., April 2, 2018. “The more you see and learn about it, people will then realize that it’s not ok to hit or abuse a child,” said Catherine Barber, Russ Child Development Center child development program chief. “It’s all about education and getting the word out that no kind of abuse should be tolerated.” Every year the CDC and the Family Advocacy Program work together to bring awareness in April, the month of the military child and child abuse prevention month.

World Water Day was celebrated on March 22 and focused on the importance of water, which built the theme “Nature for Water” – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century. In celebration of this day, the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Installation Management Flight performed maintenance on eight Filterra Stormwater Bioretention Systems, at the LaSalle gate on Langley Air Force Base. The FSB systems are stormwater infiltration boxes that work like a biorentention system. Stormwater runoff flows into the system through a curb inlet on the street. The water makes its way through specialized media, mulch and natural vegetation that capture pollutants and naturally clean the water. The clean water flows through an underdrain pipe that leads to Tide Mill Creek. These specialized boxes can take in and clean, high flow rates of up to 140 inches of water an hour, to meet the En-
vironmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s high standards of clean water. According to Dawn Christian, 633rd CES water program manager, Langley AFB uses multiple nature based solutions on and around the base, to help protect the environment from pollutants. “In general I think most people are aware of the harm to aquatic habitats, like our oceans, that is impacting the environment,” said Alicia Garcia 633rd CES natural resources program manager. “However, I think sometimes people miss the fact that especially here in coastal communities we are directly connected to those aquatic habitats. Stormwater flows from land into creeks and rivers which connect to the ocean.” According to Garcia, by putting in filtration systems that help to clean that stormwater before it can flow into those habitats, JBLE can protect the environment and the organisms that depend on it. “Local watermen harvest these resources to support themselves and to provide food which is part of the cultural heritage of the tidewater region,” said Garcia. “By protecting the environment we help protect the economy and culture of the region.” As a good steward of the environment, JBLE is committed to being a good neighbor to surrounding communities, protecting the quality of the water around the installation.

The 633rd Force Support Squadron hosted NASCAR driver Brandon Jones for a tour of the 128th Aviation Brigade schoolhouse and Fort Eustis’ 3rd Port at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Virginia, April 4, 2018. Jones said it was important for him to tour JBLE and speak with Soldiers because of the connection he feels with the military through the active duty members in his family. “I think NASCAR and the military are very similar in the way we work,� said Jones. “Our team prepares and trains at the shop just like the units here, then we ship out to our race. We do our mission then we come back home and get ready to do it again.� Jones spoke to Soldiers at the 128th Aviation Brigade Schoolhouse after trying out the Apache Helicopter Longbow Task Trainer and observing the Soldiers’ hands-on avionics repair training. “I think these kinds of experiences will
keep us motivated,â€? said Spc. Jephter Dankwa, Bravo Company, 222nd Aviation Regiment, 1st Aviation Battalion, 128th Aviation Brigade AH-64 armament/electrical/avionic systems repairer. “When you can link careers through similarities, it can change your point of view and refresh our perspective for what we’re training for every day.â€? At Fort Eustis’ 3rd Port, Jones’ boarded the large tug 805 Major General WinďŹ eld Scott, as well as the small tug 911 Enduring Freedom to learn more about the mission of Fort Eustis’ 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary). “It’s very important to me to be able to do these kinds of things and show support for our military members,â€? said Jones. “I connect with the military lifestyle and I have active duty members in my family.â€? At the end of the tour, Jones handed out autographs and took pictures with fans at the Post Exchange.

After almost two years of being closed, the Langley Club will reopen here, May 11, 2018. The barbershop at the club is currently open and at 4 p.m., April 13, the Nose Dive Lounge will open as well. The top male and female competitors in Fort Eustis’ “Biggest Loserâ€? ďŹ tness challenge were recognized in Anderson Field House at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, April 9, 2018. The 633rd Force Support Squadron hosted the 12week long event to teach participants the importance of properly monitoring diet and physical ďŹ tness habits. Michele Giuseffe, Anderson Field House recreational assistant, said the staff works to remain involved with the community despite the everchanging military member lifestyle. The programs are meant to bring members with common health goals together to make new friends or workout buddies and keep each other motivated. “It’s all about learning small ways to change your
lifestyle,â€? said Giuseffe. “We provide resources, encouragement and a central forum for participants to depend on one another and maintain personal accountability.â€? Challenge participants monitored progress through the group’s Facebook page and biweekly weigh-ins. Daily workouts, notiďŹ cations of free classes and words of encouragement were primary elements used for improvement. The annual challenge concluded with prizes awarded to the top male winner, U.S. Army veteran Danny Weatherly, Alpha Company, 210th Aviation Regiment, 1st Aviation Battalion, 128th Aviation Brigade aviation
maintenance instructor. Weatherly said he lost a total of 13 pounds as a result of the challenge. “I was surprised to hear that I won because I was not anticipating very much weight loss,â€? said Weatherly. “The biggest change I made was in my diet. I never kept track of what I was eating, but this made me a lot more conscious of what I’m taking in and taught me to read nutritional labels.â€? The top female winner was Amanda Strickland, Training and Doctrine Command Military History and Heritage OfďŹ ce museum specialist. Strickland took ďŹ rst place with an approximate weight loss of 18 pounds. “I have done this chal-
lenge at a previous duty station, but I believe the staff here really set this challenge apart from my last one,� said Strickland. “I thought about stopping at one point but they talked me through it and motivated me to keep going.� The Anderson Field House staff partnered with the Army Wellness Center to provide presentations from personal trainers and classes on nutritional label reading. The top performers were awarded gift cards, cookbooks and workout aids, but they are also walking away with new knowledge and resources to propel them further toward self-improvement. “All these programs that are offered really make a difference,� said Weatherly. “There are so many opportunities to do different things and learn new ways to apply yourself for a prolonged healthier lifestyle.�

For the rst time ever, a U.S. Air Force Airman was awarded the Basic Army Instructor Badge at Joint Base LangleyEustis, April 9, 2018. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Casey Andersen, 362nd Training Squadron, Detachment 1 HH-60 helicopter crew chief instructor, was teaching a class of Airmen and U.S. Army Soldiers when U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Malcom Frost, Center for Initial Military Training commanding general, presented him with the BAIB. The AIB, awarded in basic, senior and master levels, was created for U.S. Army NCOs in 2014 to recognize the professionalism of the educators responsible for training, leading and mentoring Soldiers. Although the badge has only been around four years, Air Force instructors have been a part of the 128th Aviation Brigade for 33 years. Due to the verbiage of Army Regulation 600-21, Noncommissioned Of cer Education System Instructor Development and Recognition Program, leaders believed only U.S. Army Soldiers were eligible for earning the badge—until now. “Once we asked the question about Air Force instructors, no one could say why they couldn’t qualify, so we got started getting everything together to get Andersen quali ed,” said Capt. Richard Collier, 1st Det. commander. “Now, we’re looking to make it a standard process for all of our Air Force instructors.” The 82nd Training Group’s 362nd TS, 1st Det., is the only Air Force training unit on Fort Eustis, producing not

Now as an instructor, he’s learned to work with sister and international services as an instructor. “I have two different chains of command, but I’m integrated with the army,” said Andersen. “It’s a unique experience because you get to see how the services differ and it really helps you grow.” Collier believes it is appropriate that Andersen is the rst Airman to receive the badge due to his high-speed nature. “Andersen is that Airman we want the newest Airmen to see,” said Collier. “He’s that Airman everyone likes, everyone respects and everyone trusts. He ts that whole Airman concept and really deserves this.”

Tidewater Military Health System connects beneficiaries to TRICARE events across region By Emerald Ralston

The Tidewater Military Health System will host several TRICARE events in the coming months open to beneficiaries across the region. The current schedule features events such as health fairs, retiree benefits and TRICARE for Life briefings. According to Michael Kirshner, TMHS marketing specialist, the TMHS hosts these events and makes them available to every beneficiary regardless of home or duty location, because TRICARE benefits are the same across the board. “[The TMHS’s role is] to bring together all the services with one goal in mind and that goal is to help our beneficiaries understand and be able to take advantage of all TRICARE has to offer,” said Juanita Smallwood, TMHS Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator. The TMHS enhanced Multi-Service Market located in Hampton Roads is comprised of McDonald Army Health Center, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley. The TMHS provides inpatient and outpatient primary, specialty, surgical subspecialty, intensive care, emergency, dental and health support services to TRICARE eligible beneficiaries.

During his visit to JBLE, U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Luis Reyes toured AAFES’ facilities on both installations, andmet with Chief Master Sgt. Matthew Mancill, 633rd Mission Support Group, and U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Eric Vidal, 733rd Mission Support Group command sergeant major, for a roundtable discussion on the 122-year-old Department of Defense retailer’s healthy initiatives. “The Exchange is committed to supporting the readiness and resiliency of Soldiers and Airmen at JBLE,” said Reyes, one of about 30 active-duty service members assigned to the Exchange. “As a partner in the Healthy Army Communities and Air Force Smart Fueling initiatives, we are leaning forward to provide better-for-you dining, snacking and shopping at Exchange restaurants, Expresses and main stores.” All of JBLE’s restaurants offer better-foryou choices, Reyes said, including coffee and sandwich shops. Expresses at both Eustis and Langley are stocked with graband-go beverages and snacks such as tuna, beef jerky, dried and fresh fruit, hardboiled eggs, yogurt and bottled water. “The Exchange is listening to our shoppers and regularly expanding our BE FIT offerings,” Reyes said. BE FIT is more than maintaining proper nutrition, Reyes said, noting that the Exchange has implemented an all-encompassing approach to wellness. For ex-
ample, both the Eustis and Langley main Exchanges feature BE FIT shops, bringing athletic wear, shoes and gear together in a one-stop shop, with the look and feel of sporting goods store. “Wellness is key to resiliency,” Reyes said. “Staying active and making betterfor-you choices go hand-inand with ensuring Soldiers and Airmen are ready for wherever the mission takes them.” Every time Soldiers or Airmen shop at the Exchange, grab a snack at the Express or dine at an Exchange restaurant, one hundred percent of Exchange earnings support quality-of-life programs including military uniforms at cost; school lunches below cost for warfighters’ children overseas; Child Development Centers; youth programs; fitness centers; and career opportunities for spouses, veterans and wounded warriors. “Together, the Eustis and Langley Exchanges generated more than $1 million on behalf of Quality-of-Life programs in 2016,” Reyes said. “Shopping the Exchange makes life better for every member of the military community.” During his visit, Reyes also thanked Exchange associates for their dedicated service. “Since 1895, the Exchange has provided a lifeline to America’s service members and their families,” Reyes said. “The Exchange is family serving family. The overhead traffic light at Lee Rd and Sweeney Blvd heading outbound is still out and has been temporarily replaced with a traffic light to the right side of the intersection. JBLE motorists should remain aware of the temporary placement of the traffic light, expected to be in place in approximately 12-14 weeks.
Installation of Active Vehicle Barriers
The 733rd Civil Engineer Division will install new active vehicle barriers at the Fort Eustis main gate, beginning April 9, 2018. The construction will be phased to minimize traffic impact. The first phase will last until May 1, 2018. During this time, the portion of Madison Avenue adjacent to outbound Washington Boulevard will be closed. Traffic traveling north through this area will travel down 28th Street to Jefferson Avenue and then onto Washington Boulevard. The second phase will occur over two weekends, May 4-7 and May 11-14, 2018. The United States Army Transportation Museum on Fort Eustis hours of operation has changed. The previous hours of Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., has changed to Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
